[0002] This disclosure relates generally to garments having a torso section and a hood section.BACKGROUND
[0003] Some garments may include hoods which may be worn to cover parts of a wearer's head and neck. Such hoods generally include an opening for the wearer's face to allow the wearer to see out from the hood. However, some known hoods have some disadvantages. For example, some known hoods may block or inhibit the wearer's peripheral vision when worn.SUMMARY
[0004] According to at least one embodiment, there is disclosed a garment comprising: a torso section; and a hood section extending from the torso section, the hood section comprising a hood edge defining a unitary face opening, the hood edge comprising: a hood edge apex at a farthest distance along the hood edge from the torso section; a first hood edge portion extending from a first side of the hood edge apex toward the torso section; and a second hood edge portion extending from a second side of the hood edge apex toward the torso section, the second side of the hood edge apex opposite the first side of the hood edge apex, wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when a wearer wears the garment: the torso section covers a portion of a body of the wearer, the portion of the body of the wearer inferior to a neck of the wearer and comprising at least a portion of a chest of the wearer inferior to a sternum of the wearer; the hood section covers a portion of a head of the wearer; the face opening exposes at least some of a face of the wearer; at a first distance from the torso section, the hood section extends by a first arc length from the first hood edge portion to the second hood edge portion; at a second distance from the torso section greater than the first distance, the hood section extends by a second arc length from the first hood edge portion to the second hood edge portion; and the second arc length is at least 15% greater than the first arc length.

[0044] Referring to FIGS. 1 to 5, a garment according to one embodiment is shown generally at 100. The garment 100 includes a torso section 102, a hood section 104, and sleeves 106 and 108. In general, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that, when a wearer wears the garment 100, the torso section 102 covers a portion of the wearer's body inferior to (that is, below) a neck of the wearer, the hood section 104 covers a portion of the wearer's head, and the sleeves 106 and 108 cover at least portions of the wearer's arms. More specifically, in the embodiment shown, the torso section 102 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the portion of the body of the wearer that is covered by the torso section includes at least a portion of a chest of the wearer that is inferior to a sternum of the wearer. Even more specifically, in the embodiment shown, the torso section 102 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the portion of the body of the wearer that is covered by the torso section includes a portion of an abdomen of the wearer. However, alternative embodiments may differ.
[0045] Also in the embodiment shown, the torso section 102 defines a first arm through hole (not shown) and a second arm through hole 110 (see FIG. 5). The sleeve 106 extends from the torso section 102 at the first arm through hole and is communication with the first arm through hole, while the sleeve 108 extends from the torso section 102 at the second arm through hole 110 and is communication with the second arm through hole 110. As such, when the wearer wears the garment 100 and the torso section 102 covers the portion of the wearer's body, the first and second arm through holes accommodate the wearer's arms to pass through the first and second arm through holes and into the sleeves 106 and 108.
[0046] The hood section 104 extends from the torso section 102 and includes a hood edge 112 which defines a unitary face opening, shown generally at 114. At a farthest distance 116, along the hood edge 112, from the torso section 102, the hood edge 112 includes a hood edge apex 118. That is, the hood edge apex 118 may be considered as being at a midpoint of the hood edge 112. From a first side 120 of the hood edge apex 118, a first portion 122 of the hood edge 112 extends towards the torso section 102, and from a second side 124 of the hood edge apex 118 opposite the first side 120, a second portion 126 of the hood edge 112 extends towards the torso section 102. Opposite the face opening 114, the hood 104 extends from the first portion 122 of the hood edge 112 to the second portion 126 of the hood edge 112.
[0047] In the embodiment shown, along a back of the hood section 104, approximately midway along the hood section 104 between the first and second portions 122 and 126 of the hood edge 112, the hood section 104 has a seam 128. The seam 128 extends along the hood section 104 up from an interface between the hood section 104 and the torso section 102 and toward the hood edge apex 118, but stops short of the hood edge apex 118. That is, the seam 128 does not reach the hood edge apex 118—or any part of the hood edge 112. More specifically, the seam 128 ends at a fixed distance 130, along the hood section 104, from the hood edge apex 118. In some embodiments, this fixed distance 130 may be, for example, approximately 9 centimeters, or at least 9 centimeters. Moreover, in the embodiment shown, the hood section 104 is generally free of any seams extending to or from the hood edge 112 near the hood edge apex 118. More specifically, for at least a portion of the hood edge 112 that is within an apex-adjacent distance 132, along the hood edge 112, from the hood edge apex 118, the hood section 104 has no seams extending away from the hood edge 112. In some embodiments, the apex-adjacent distance 132 may be, for example, approximately 20% of an overall length that the hood edge 112 extends to define the face opening 114—that is, in the embodiment shown, the apex-adjacent distance 132 may be, for example, approximately 40% of the distance 116.
[0048] As noted above, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment 100, the torso section 102 covers the portion of the wearer's body and the hood section 104 covers the portion of the wearer's head. Furthermore, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment 100 and the torso section 102 covers the portion of the wearer's body and the hood section 104 covers the portion of the wearer's head, the face opening 114 exposes at least some of a face of the wearer. More specifically, as shown in FIGS. 1, 2, and 4, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening 114 exposes, at least, eyes of the wearer. Even more specifically, in the embodiment shown, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening 114 exposes, at least, temples of the wearer. Even more specifically, in the embodiment shown, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening 114 exposes, at least, a nose of the wearer. Even more specifically, in the embodiment shown, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening 114 exposes, at least, a mouth of the wearer. Even more specifically, in the embodiment shown, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening 114 exposes, at least, a chin of the wearer.
[0049] As shown most clearly in FIG. 4, the garment 100—and, in particular, the hood portion 104—of the embodiment shown is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment 100, the first and second portions 122 and 126 of the hood edge 112 curve back toward the seam 128 (that is, toward a back of the hood) as they extend away from the hood edge apex 118 toward the torso section 102. More specifically, referring now to FIGS. 4 and 6, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment 100 and the torso section 102 covers the portion of the wearer's body and the hood section 104 covers the portion of the wearer's head, at a first distance 134 from the torso section 102, the hood section 104 extends by a first arc length 136 from the first hood edge portion 122 to the second hood edge portion 126, and at a second distance 138 from the torso section 102 that is greater than the first distance 134, the hood section 104 extends by a second arc length 140 from the first hood edge portion 122 to the second hood edge portion 126, and this second arc length 140 is generally greater than the first arc length 136. For example, in some embodiments, the second arc length 140 may be at least 15% greater than the first arc length 136. In some embodiments, the second arc length 140 may be at least 20% greater than the first arc length 136. In some embodiments, the second arc length 140 may be at least 25% greater than the first arc length 136. In some embodiments, the second arc length 140 may be at least 35% greater than the first arc length 136. In some embodiments, the second arc length 140 may be at least 40% greater than the first arc length 136. With this shape of the hood edge 112, the hood section 104 is effectively absent adjacent to the eyes of the wearer—that is, as noted above, when the hood section 104 is worn, the face opening 114 may expose, at least, eyes (and temples) of the wearer. Therefore, the hood portion 104 may avoid interfering with (for example, blocking or inhibiting) a peripheral vision of the wearer when worn. That is, the garment 100 is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment 100 and the hood section 104 covers the portion of the wearer's head, the hood edge 112—and thus the hood section 104—is outside a peripheral field of vision of the wearer.
[0050] Referring now to FIG. 7, the hood section 104 of the garment 100 is generally dimensioned and configured to permit the wearer to wear a helmet 142 (such as the safety helmet / hard hat depicted in FIG. 7) over the hood section 104 when the wearer wears the garment 100. More specifically, the hood section 104 is relatively thin, low-bulk, and form-fitting to allow the helmet 142 to fit over the hood section 104. For example, in some embodiments, the hood section 104 may have a hood section thickness which is less than a torso section thickness of the torso section 102. As a more specific example, the hood section thickness may be at most 3 millimeters, whereas the torso section thickness may be at least 5 millimeters. In some embodiments, the hood section 104 may have a hood section fabric weight that is less than 300 grams per square meter. In some such embodiments, the hood section fabric weight may be less than 250 grams per square meter. In some such embodiments, the hood section fabric weight may be approximately 200 grams per square meter. Comparatively, in some embodiments, the torso section 102 may have a torso section fabric weight of at least 300 grams per square meter, or of approximately 300 grams per square meter. Moreover, as noted above, the hood section 104 does not have any seams extending away from the hood edge 112 at least within the apex-adjacent distance 132 of the hood edge apex 118, and the seam 128 ends at the fixed distance 130 from the hood edge apex 118. Therefore, at least around the face opening 114, there are no seams to interfere with the fit of the helmet 142 when the wearer wears the hood section 104 and the helmet 142 over the hood section 104.
[0051] As shown in FIGS. 4 and 8, when the wearer wears the hood section 104 to cover the portion of the wearer's head, a portion, shown generally at 144, of the hood section 104 which is adjacent to the hood edge apex 118 may be moved down—for example, when the wearer wears the helmet 142 over the hood section 104—to cover at least a central portion of a forehead of the wearer, along a median plane of the wearer. That is, in some embodiments, the garment may be dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment 100, the portion of the head of the wearer covered by the hood section 104 includes at least a portion of an intersection between the forehead of the wearer and the median plane of the wearer. Therefore, when the wearer wears the hood section 104 and the helmet 142 over the hood section 104, the portion 144 of the hood section 104 may be between the wearer's forehead and the helmet 142. In this position, the portion 144 of the hood section 104 may absorb the wearer's sweat—that is, the portion 144 of the hood section 104 may effectively act as a sweatband.
[0052] Referring now to FIGS. 9 and 10, a garment according to another embodiment is shown generally at 200 and includes includes a torso section 202, a hood section 204, and sleeves 206 and 208. The torso section 202, hood section 204, and sleeves 206 and 208 of the garment 200 are generally similar to the torso section 102, hood section 104, and sleeves 106 and 108 of the garment 100, and the garment 200 the is generally dimensioned such that, when a wearer wears the garment 200, the torso section 202 covers a portion of the wearer's body inferior to (that is, below) a neck of the wearer, the hood section 204 covers a portion of the wearer's head, and the sleeves 206 and 208 cover at least portions of the wearer's arms.

When the wearer wears the garment 200 and a helmet, such as the helmet 142, over the hood section 204, the extra material 224 at the rear base of the hood section 204 - and the corresponding extended length 230 of the hood centerline 220—may accommodate head movement of the wearer without, for example, transmitting upward or rearward force to the helmet, thereby reducing a risk of helmet displacement during normal head movement of the wearer.
[0056] In some embodiments, the torso section 102 and / or the hood section 104 of the garment 100, and / or the torso section 202 and / or the hood section 204 of the garment 200 may include a moisture wicking material, a fire retardant material (such as, for example, Nomex®), and / or a reflective material. Referring now to FIG. 11, in some embodiments, the torso section 102 and / or the hood section 104 of the garment 100, and / or the torso section 202 and / or the hood section 204 of the garment 200 may include two such layers 232 and 234 which are integrally formed. For example, the first layer 232 may include a moisture wicking material, while the second layer 234 may include a fire retardant material. In some embodiments, the garment 100 and / or the garment 200 may have no drawstrings or other loose adjustment components to reduce or eliminate potential snag / entanglement hazards.

Claims
1. A garment comprising:a torso section; anda hood section extending from the torso section, the hood section comprising a hood edge defining a unitary face opening, the hood edge comprising:a hood edge apex at a farthest distance along the hood edge from the torso section;a first hood edge portion extending from a first side of the hood edge apex toward the torso section; anda second hood edge portion extending from a second side of the hood edge apex toward the torso section, the second side of the hood edge apex opposite the first side of the hood edge apex,wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when a wearer wears the garment:the torso section covers a portion of a body of the wearer, the portion of the body of the wearer inferior to a neck of the wearer and comprising at least a portion of a chest of the wearer inferior to a sternum of the wearer;the hood section covers a portion of a head of the wearer;the face opening exposes at least some of a face of the wearer;at a first distance from the torso section, the hood section extends by a first arc length from the first hood edge portion to the second hood edge portion;at a second distance from the torso section greater than the first distance, the hood section extends by a second arc length from the first hood edge portion to the second hood edge portion; andthe second arc length is at least 15% greater than the first arc length.
2. The garment of claim 1 wherein the second arc length is at least 20% greater than the first arc length.
3. The garment of claim 2 wherein the second arc length is at least 25% greater than the first arc length.

The garment of claim 1 wherein:the hood section further comprises a hood centerline extending from the torso section to the hood edge apex, each point along the hood centerline equidistant, along the hood section, from the first hood edge portion and the second hood edge portion; andthe garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, at least at a collar distance from the torso section, the collar distance less than 50% of a farthest extent of the hood section from the torso section, a length of the hood centerline to the torso section is greater than the collar distance.
7. The garment of claim 6 wherein, at the collar distance, the length of the hood centerline to the torso section is at least 6 centimeters greater than the collar distance.
8. The garment of claim 1 wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the portion of the body of the wearer covered by the torso section further comprises a portion of an abdomen of the wearer.
9. The garment of claim 1 wherein:the torso section defines a first arm through hole and a second arm through hole; andthe garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the first arm through hole accommodates therethrough a first arm of the wearer and the second arm through hole accommodates therethrough a second arm of the wearer.
10. The garment of claim 9 further comprising:a first sleeve extending from the torso section at the first arm through hole; anda second sleeve extending from the torso section at the second arm through hole,wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the first sleeve covers at least a portion of the first arm of the wearer and the second sleeve covers at least a portion of the second arm of the wearer.
11. The garment of claim 1 wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the portion of the head of the wearer covered by the hood section comprises at least a portion of an intersection between a forehead of the wearer and a median plane of the wearer.
12. The garment of claim 1 wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening exposes, at least, eyes of the wearer.
13. The garment of claim 12 wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening further exposes, at least, temples of the wearer.
14. The garment of claim 12 wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when the wearer wears the garment, the face opening further exposes, at least, a nose of the wearer.

23. The garment of claim 21 wherein the torso section has a torso section fabric weight of approximately 300 grams per square meter.
24. The garment of claim 21 wherein the torso section has a torso section fabric weight of at least 300 grams per square meter.
25. The garment of claim 1 wherein:the torso section has a torso section thickness;the hood section has a hood section thickness; andthe torso section thickness is greater than the hood section thickness.

A garment comprising:a torso section; anda hood section extending from the torso section, the hood section comprising:a hood edge defining a unitary face opening, the hood edge comprising:a hood edge apex at a farthest distance along the hood edge from the torso section;a first hood edge portion extending from a first side of the hood edge apex toward the torso section; anda second hood edge portion extending from a second side of the hood edge apex toward the torso section, the second side of the hood edge apex opposite the first side of the hood edge apex; anda hood centerline extending from the torso section to the hood edge apex, each point along the hood centerline equidistant, along the hood section, from the first hood edge portion and the second hood edge portion,wherein the garment is dimensioned such that when a wearer wears the garment:the torso section covers a portion of a body of the wearer, the portion of the body of the wearer inferior to a neck of the wearer and comprising at least a portion of a chest of the wearer inferior to a sternum of the wearer;the hood section covers a portion of a head of the wearer;the face opening exposes at least some of a face of the wearer; andat least at a collar distance from the torso section, the collar distance less than 50% of a farthest extent of the hood section from the torso section, a length of the hood centerline to the torso section is greater than the collar distance.
