[0002] The present invention relates generally to devices for hanging of hats in unworn states thereof, and more particularly to wall-mounted baseball cap holders for hanging support of baseball caps by their top buttons in a manner facing the front display side of the crown outward from wall.BACKGROUND
[0003] Numerous wall-mounted baseball cap holders have been proposed in the prior art, particularly for use by baseball cap collectors or retailers, who are not merely looking for a place to hang a singular baseball cap in any arbitrary orientation, but for those who are looking to create an aesthetically pleasing display of their collected or purchasable baseball caps in an aesthetic fashion, where a rear segment of the flexible crown of the baseball cap is folded forwardly into the space bound by the front segment of the baseball cap, and the baseball cap is held in a readable position with the front display side of the crown facing away from the wall on which the cap holder is mounted, so that any logos, names, etc. typically displayed on this front display side of the crown are prominently visible and readable to any occupants of the room. An array of such baseball cap holders can be mounted on a wall to display a collection of multiple baseball caps in an organized, aesthetically pleasing fashion, to which any additional holders can be added as the owner's collection or retailer's inventory expands. In terms of marketing such products to consumers, as opposed to retailers, such products can be particularly appealing to collectors with multiple baseball caps to display, but even singular holder can likewise be used for such display-oriented, aesthetically neat hanging storage of a baseball cap when not worn by the owner, whether that owner is a collector or a casual baseball cap wearer.
[0004] Some prior examples of such cap holders are operable to hang the baseball caps by their top buttons, wall-mounted examples of which can be seen in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5188325, 5240123 and 5630516, and a pole-mounted example can be seen in U.S. Pat. No. 4,673,153. Other cap holders instead support the crown of the cap from beneath with a lower support, and constrain the top button of the cap above the crown with an upper restraint as a way to properly orient and retain the cap on the lower support. Examples of this type can be seen in U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,223,910, 11,350,772, D1005704 and U.S. Patent Applications 2022 / 0047101 and 2023 / 0301451 (in FIG. 3). Other baseball cap holders are instead designed to hang the baseball cap from the rear of an unfolded crown, so that the front display side the crown faces downward, with the front visor hanging downwardly along the wall surface, denoting an unreadable position of the cap given the downward facing orientation of the front display side of the crown.
[0005] Despite such prior product endeavours in this space, there remains room for improved baseball cap holders, for example with improved / alternate hanging geometries, functional performance, branding / customization capability, and shipping efficiency.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] According to a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a cap holder for wall-hung support of a baseball cap having a crown, a front visor projecting from a rim of the crown at a front segment thereof, and a top button situated atop the crown, said cap holder comprising:
[0007] a base having a rear face for placement against the wall in an installed state of the base, and an opposing front face;
[0008] a catch loop attached or attachable to the base in a working position protruding forwardly outward from the front face to hold the baseball cap in a position suspended from said catch loop in a display-folded state of said baseball cap with a rear fraction of the crown folded forwardly inside a front fraction of the crown;
[0009] a catch opening delimited, at least in part, by the catch loop, said catch opening having a length that is measured between opposing proximal and distal ends of the catch opening, among which the proximal end is nearer to the base in the working position of the catch loop, and a width that is measured transversely of said length, said width being characterized by an uninterrupted tapering thereof over at least a majority length of said catch opening that tapers uninterruptedly toward, and fully up to, said distal end of the catch opening;
[0010] wherein an inside edge of the catch loop, at the distal end of the catch opening and over at least a partial span of said inside edge at which the width of the catch opening is tapered toward the distal end, is tapered in thickness in an inward direction pointing into said catch opening, whereby tapering of the catch opening and said inside edge are operable to frictionally wedge the inside edge of the catch loop beneath the top button of the baseball cap under user-performed lifting of the top button up into the catch opening and lengthwise sliding of the top button toward the distal end of the catch opening, to thereby hang said baseball cap by the top button thereof.

[0036] As summarized above, the drawings illustrate one preferred embodiment of an inventive cap holder 10 for wall-hung support of a baseball cap 100. As used herein, the term baseball cap 100 refers to any hat having a crown 102, a front visor 104 projecting from a bottom rim of the crown at a front segment thereof (in contrast to a visorless / brimless remainder of the crown's bottom rim), and a top button 106 fixed atop the crown where multiple panels, of which the overall crown is composed, meet one another. As illustrated in FIG. 11, and described in more detail below, the cap holder 10 is designed for hanging support of the baseball cap 100 on a wall 200 with the cap 100 in a display-folded state thereof in which a rear fraction of the crown 102, situated posteriorly of the top button 106, is folded or tucked forwardly inside the space bound by a front fraction of the crown 102. In this display-folded state of the cap 100, the bottom rim of the crown, which usually delimits a head opening through which the wearer's head is admissible into the crown of the cap, is collapsed, thereby closing this head opening. In the display-folded state of the cap 100, the top button 106 thereof resides at an effective rear end of the folded cap 100, rather than at a mid-region between the normally spaced-apart front and rear extremities of the cap that instead reside oppositely of one another across the head opening in an unfolded wearable state of the cap.
[0037] The cap holder 10 of the illustrated embodiment is a two-piece assembly composed of a base 12 and a catch loop 14, which are produced separately of one another, in a manner configured with matable coupling features by which these two components can be assembled together to form the whole of the cap holder 10. Such assembly typically takes place after delivery of the cap holder 10 to a customer or retailer, as opposed to preassembly of the finished product by the producer of its constituent components, for reasons elaborated on further below. Both the base 12 and the catch loop of the illustrated embodiment are relatively flat components, each having two primary faces of planar character in parallel planes in which the two largest of the component's three orthogonal dimensions (i.e. length and width) are measured, leaving a smallest of these three dimensions (i.e. the thickness) of the component as that which is measured between the respective planes of the two primary faces. Using directional terminology consistent with an orientation in which the assembled cap holder 10 would typically be installed on the wall 200 for hanging of the baseball cap 100 thereon (as shown in FIG. 11), the two primary faces of the base 12 are a rear face 16A thereof for placement against the wall 200 and an opposing front face 16B. The two primary faces of the catch loop 14 are opposing top and bottom faces 18A, 18B thereof that faces respectively upward and downward in the installed state of the cap holder 10 on the wall 200 and with the catch loop 14 assembled to the base 12.
[0038] The catch loop 14 has an arched rim 20 of tapered U-shape. A rounded external apex 22 of the arched rim 20 resides distally of the base 12 in the assembled state of the cap holder 10, and denotes a terminal front end 24 of the both the catch loop 14 and the cap holder as a whole. An opposing end of the catch loop 16, meaning that which is nearest the widest end of the arched rim 20 and at which the catch loop 14 is configured for mated coupling to the base 12 to achieve the assembled state of the cap holder 10, is therefore referred to herein as a rear end 26 of the catch loop 14. A catch opening 28 is embodied by the catch loop 14 as an unoccupied space bound between the two symmetric halves of the arched rim 20, the purpose of which is to receive the top button 106 of the baseball cap 100 during engagement of the baseball cap 100 to the cap holder 10, as described in more detail further below.
[0039] In the illustrated embodiment, the catch loop 14 itself fully bounds the catch opening 28 on all sides, thus forming a closed loop fully therearound, though in other embodiments, a rear end of the catch opening 28 could instead be bound by the base 12 in the assembled state of the cap holder 10. In the illustrated example, the two ends of the arched rim 20 at the wide end thereof are joined together by a crossbar 30 that bounds this rear end of the catch opening 28 in this closed-loop example. Protruding rearwardly from this crossbar 30 for mated coupling with the base 12 are two male coupler tabs 32A, 32B for respective insertion into two corresponding female receiver sockets 34A, 34B embodied in the base 12 in positions recessed in the front face 16B thereof near a bottom end of the base 12.
[0040] In the illustrated embodiment, the two male coupler tabs 32A, 32B are differently shaped or dimensioned from one another, as are the two female receiver sockets 34A, 34B, in a manner by which the male coupler tabs 32A, 32B and the female receiver sockets 34A, 34B can only be successfully mated when the base 12 and the catch loop 14 occupy a particular predetermined orientation relative to one another. This way, the catch loop 14 cannot be erroneously installed upside down to its intended orientation, which orientation and its benefits are described further below. In the illustrated example, male coupler tab 32B is larger than coupler tab 32A, and more particularly is of longer measure in a width directionality W of the catch loop 14 in which the two ends of the arched rim 20 are spaced apart. Likewise, female receiving socket 34B is larger than female receiving socket 34A, and more particularly is of longer measure in a matching width directionality of the base of parallel relation to the width of the catch loop 14.
[0041] Each male coupler tab 32A, 32B has a flexible tang 38 at an outer side of the coupler tab 32A, 32B for engaging with a respective undercut 40 at an outer side of the respective receiving socket 34A, 34B when the male coupler tabs 32A, 32B are forced into the female receiving sockets 34A, 34B. During such insertion, each tang 38 is momentarily forced inwardly from its unflexed default position by action of a ramped outer face 38A of the tang against the outer side of the respective socket 34A, 34B at the front face 16B of the base 12, where the outer side of the socket is not undercut. Once a frontmost tip of the ramped surface 38A reaches the undercut 40, the tang returns to its unflexed default position, and into snap-fit engagement with the undercut 40. In this state, the two engaged tangs 38 prevent subsequent extraction of the catch loop 14 from this snap-fitted attachment to the base 12. Instead of undercuts, penetrative holes communicating the female sockets with the exterior of the base 12 could be used for equivalent purpose of snap-fit capture of the tangs 38.
[0042] In the assembled state of the cap holder 10, the catch loop 14 projects forwardly out from the front face 16B of the base 12 at a bottom margin thereof, whereby a substantial majority, and near entirety, of the base 12 stands upright from the top side 18A of the catch loop 14. With the exception of the small bottom margin covered by the installed catch loop 14, an entire remainder of the front face 16B of the base 12 remains visibility unobstructed by the installed catch loop 14, and can thus be used to host any variety of printed ornamentation 42 on this visible majority of the base's front face 16B. By producing the cap holder 10 in two separate pieces, of which at least the base 12 is preferably flat, application of printed ornamentation onto the base 12 can be performed by direct application of such printed ornamentation to the planar front face 16B of the base 12 using any variety of suitable printing machine, without requiring any particularly complex jigging to hold the base 12 in such printing machine given the likewise flat rear face 16A of the base 12 that can be seated flat in such printing machine to achieve an easily printable position of the base 12. Printing of the base 12 in isolation avoids interference of the printing process by the catch loop 14 that is instead later after such printing takes place. Assembly is typically performed also after shipment of the produced and printed componentry to a customer or retailer, whereby the flat unassembled componentry can be packaged in space efficient fashion for economical shipping and reduced chance of breakage during transport. Alternatively, full or partial orders of product may be sold be retailers in pre-assembled form ready for store display.
[0043] The base 12 and catch loop 14 are typically made of a plastic composition, and produced by plastic molding or 3D printing techniques, and thus can be produced economically, and for example sold to businesses / organizations as giveaway promotional items, with business / organization / product names, logos etc. printed on the base 12. With appropriate licensing, the names / logos of professional sports teams can be printed on the base, and sold to sports fans who can pair their team-branded baseball caps with correspondingly team-branded cap holders 10. While the installed orientation of the base 12 makes the front face 16B the optimal display area for such printed ornamentation of the cap holder, the flat topside 18A of the catch loop 14 of the illustrated embodiment, given its flat character, may also be used to host printed ornamentation, for example with a sports team logo on the front face 16B of the base 12 and the name of the sport teams on the top face 18A on the catch loop 14. Other surfaces of the cap holder 10 may also host ornamentation thereon, even contoured surfaces of non-planar character, though this may be more challenging to incorporate by post-fabrication printing methodologies, and therefore may alternatively be incorporated integrally during fabrication of the componentry to be ornamented.
[0044] An inside edge 44 of the arched rim 20 of the catch loop 14, referring to the edge thereof that faces into the catch opening 28, is tapered in the thickness dimension of the catch loop 14, in an inward direction growing narrower into the catch opening 28. The cross-section of FIG. 5 particularly reveals the tapered character of the inside edge 44 at a distal end of the catch opening 28 furthest from the base, i.e. nearest the external apex 22 of the arched rim 20 of the catch loop 14. FIG. 7 particularly reveals the tapered character of the inside edge 44 at the two symmetric sides of the arched rim 20. In the illustrated example, the inside edge 44 is tapered over an entire span of the arched rim 20, on both symmetric halves of the arched rim 20, from the crossbar 30 at the proximal end of the catch opening 28 to the inside of the arched rim apex 22 at the distal end of the catch opening 28 that opposes the proximal end in a length directionality L of the catch loop. Alternatively, the top and bottom walls 46A, 46B of the female receiving sockets 34A, 34B of the base 12 could be perpendicular to the rear and front faces 16A, 16B of the base 12, and the top and bottom surfaces 48A, 48B of each male coupling tab 32A, 32B instead angularly offset from the top and bottom faces 18A, 18B of the catch loop 14 by an offset angle equal to A minus 90.

[0047] FIG. 11 illustrates use of the cap holder 10 on the wall 200 to hang the baseball cap 100 therefrom in the display-folded state and readable position with the front display side of the crown 102 facing away from the wall 200 so that any logos, names, etc. typically displayed on this front display side of the crown 102 are prominently visible and readable to any occupants of the room. After installation of the cap holder 10 onto the wall 200, for example with double sided tape 202 bonded to the rear face 16A of the base 12 and to the wall 200, the display-folded baseball cap 100 is manually held by the front visor 104 and moved into a ready position below the catch loop 14 of the cap holder 100. From this ready position, the user lifts the baseball cap 100 upwardly to raise the top button 106 of the baseball cap 100 into the catch opening 28 of the catch loop 14, and more particularly into a wider proximal half of the catch opening 28 nearer to the base 12 initially. As shown, the crossbar 30 may have a concave dimple 30A in the front side thereof to impart a roundedness to the proximal end the catch opening for increased clearance and ease of insertion into this wider proximal half of the catch opening. The user then pulls the baseball cap 100 outwardly away from the wall 200 to slide the top button 106 of the baseball cap 100 toward the narrower distal end of the catch opening 28. During this pulled movement of the baseball cap 100 away from the wall, the tapered inside edge 44 of the catch loop 14, and the tapered width of the catch opening 28 between the two converging sides of this tapered inside edge 44, cooperatively act to frictionally wedge the tapered inside edge 44, at the narrowest distal region of catch opening 28, between the top button 106 and crown 102 of the baseball cap. Later, to remove the baseball cap 100 from the cap holder 10, the user can simply tip the front visor 104 of the cap 100 upwardly, which movement tips the top button 106 of the cap 100 rearwardly out the narrow distal region of the catch opening into the wider proximal region thereof, from which the top button 106 can freely fall, thus freeing the cap 100 from the cap holder 10.
[0048] When the tapered inside edge 44 at the narrowest distal region of the catch opening 28 engages under the top button 106 of the baseball cap 100, the user can release the baseball cap 100, leaving it hanging from the catch loop 14 by its top button 106. The front display side of the crown 102 of the baseball cap 100 faces away from the wall 200 for readability, in accompanying by any printed ornamentation 42 on the base 12 of the cap holder 10, which resides in a visible and prominent location above the captured top button 106 of the baseball cap 100. Since the catch loop 14 slopes downwardly away from the base 12, and likewise downwardly away from the wall 200 therebehind, the gravitational moment pulling downwardly on the protruding front visor 104 of the baseball cap 100 urges the top button 106 into tighter engagement with the tapered inside edge 44 of the catch loop 44 at the narrowest distal region of the catch opening 28. This gravitational encouragement of the engaged relationship between the baseball cap 100 and the cap holder 10 reduces the potential for accidental fall of the baseball cap 100 from the cap holder 10.
[0049] While the production of the cap holder 10 in two separate component parts later assembled for use is beneficial for compatibility of the flat base 12 with printing machinery useable to ornament the base 12 in a directly printed fashion, printed ornamentation of the base 12 may alternatively be applied in an indirect fashion, for example by application of one or more printed stickers onto the front face 16B of the base 12 whether via manual or automated application, either of which may similarly benefit from application of the sticker(s) to the base in a laid flat position in absence of the catch loop, though stickered application may alternatively be performed in coupled presence of the catch loop. Even of the multi-component character of the cap holder is not exploited for the printed or other application of ornamentation thereto, the production of the cap holder in separate pieces for later assembly also enables other unique functionality, such as interchangeability of bases and catch loops of different colour to form different multi-coloured cap holders where bases and catch loops of different colour can be selectively assembled together. For example, users may wish to swap out componentry of different colours to achieve different colour combinations, for example to better resemble different “home” and “away” versions of a team's jersey or uniform. A manufacturer may therefore opt to produce at least one of either the base or the catch loop, or both thereof, in multiple colours, including, but not limited to any combination of white, black. grey, blue, red, green, orange, yellow, purple, etc., and optionally in various hues, tints, shades, and tones thereof.

A cap holder for wall-hung support of a baseball cap having a crown, a front visor projecting from a rim of the crown at a front segment thereof, and a top button situated atop the crown, said cap holder comprising:a base having a rear face for placement against the wall in an installed state of the base, and an opposing front face;a catch loop attached or attachable to the base in a working position protruding forwardly outward from the front face to hold the baseball cap in a position suspended from said catch loop in a display-folded state of said baseball cap with a rear fraction of the crown folded forwardly inside a front fraction of the crown;a catch opening delimited, at least in part, by the catch loop, said catch opening having a length that is measured between opposing proximal and distal ends of the catch opening, among which the proximal end is nearer to the base in the working position of the catch loop, and a width that is measured transversely of said length, said width being characterized by an uninterrupted tapering thereof over at least a majority length of said catch opening that tapers uninterruptedly toward, and fully up to, said distal end of the catch opening;wherein an inside edge of the catch loop, at the distal end of the catch opening and over at least a partial span of said inside edge at which the width of the catch opening is tapered toward the distal end, is tapered in thickness in an inward direction pointing into said catch opening, whereby tapering of the catch opening and said inside edge are operable to frictionally wedge the inside edge of the catch loop beneath the top button of the baseball cap under user-performed lifting of the top button up into the catch opening and lengthwise sliding of the top button toward the distal end of the catch opening, to thereby hang said baseball cap by the top button thereof.
2. The cap holder of claim 1 further comprising a base to which the catch loop is attached or attachable, said base having a rear face for placement against the wall in an installed state thereon, and an opposing front face from which the catch loop projects in said working position.
3. The cap holder of claim 2 wherein said catch loop and said base are separate components cooperatively configured for selective attachment to one another to achieve an assembled state of said cap holder.
4. The cap holder of claim 2 wherein the catch loop and the base are cooperatively configured so that, in the working position of the catch loop, and in attached relation thereof to the base, at least the inside edge of the catch loop, slopes downwardly away from the base to gravitationally encourage wedged engagement of the catch loop beneath the top button of the cap.
5. A cap holder for wall-hung support of a baseball cap having a crown, a front visor projecting from a rim of the crown at a front segment thereof, and a top button situated atop the crown, said cap holder comprising:a base having a rear face for placement against the wall in an installed state thereon, and an opposing front face that characterized by a printable surface onto which ornamentation is printable;a catch loop separate of the base and selectively attachable thereto in a working position protruding outwardly from the front face thereof to hold the baseball cap in a position suspended from said catch loop in a display-folded state of said baseball cap with a rear fraction of the crown folded forwardly inside a front fraction of the crown; anda catch opening that is delimited, at least in part, by the catch loop, and into which the top button of the cap is liftable by a user and slidable away from the base to wedge an inside edge of the catch loop, at a distal end of the cap opening furthest from the base, under the top button of the baseball cap to thereby hang said baseball cap by the top button thereof;whereby selective attachability of the base to the catch loop enables printing of said ornamentation onto the base in detached absence of the catch loop prior to assembly of the cap holder.
6. The cap holder of claim 5 wherein the base, at least at the printable surface of the front face thereof, is flat.
7. The cap holder of claim 5 comprising a male coupler and a female receiver, each possessed by a respective one of either the catch loop or the base, and among which said male coupler is matably insertable into said female receiver to couple the catch loop and the base together.
8. The cap holder of claim 7 wherein the catch loop comprises said male coupler, and the base comprises said female receiver.
9. The cap holder of claim 7 wherein said male coupler is a first one of two male couplers, and the female receiver is a first one of two female receivers, among which the two male couplers are differently sized from one another, and the two female receivers are also differently sized to one another, and a larger one of the two male couplers is insertable into only a larger one of the two female receivers.
10. The cap holder of claim 7 wherein the male coupler comprises a flexible tang thereon for snap-fit engagement at a side of the female receiver when inserted therein.
11. The cap holder of claim 9 wherein each of the two male couplers has a respective flexible tang thereon for snap-fit engagement at a side of a respective one of the two female receivers when inserted therein.
12. The cap holder of claim 7 wherein the male coupler and the female receiver are configured to couple the base and catch loop together only under insertion of the male coupler into the female receiver in a singular predetermined orientation relative thereto.
13. The cap holder of claim 5 wherein the catch loop and the base are cooperatively configured to achieve said selective attachment to one another in only a singular predefined orientation to one another.
14. A method of ornamenting the cap holder of claim 5 comprising applying printed ornamentation to at least one of the base and the catch loop prior to assembly thereof.
15. The method of claim 14 wherein said printed ornamentation comprises at least front ornamentation printed on the front face of the base.
16. The method of claim 14 comprising applying said printed ornamentation using a printing machine.
17. The method of claim 14 comprising applying said printed ornamentation prior to shipment of the cap holder to a post-printing recipient of the cap holder, and shipping said cap holder to said post-printing recipient thereof in an unassembled state.
18. A cap holder for wall-hung support of a baseball cap having a crown, a front visor projecting from a rim of the crown at a front segment thereof, and a top button situated atop the crown, said cap holder comprising:a base having a rear face for placement against the wall in an installed state thereon, and an opposing front face;a catch loop attached or attachable to the base in a working position protruding outwardly from the front face thereof to hold the baseball cap in a position suspended from said catch loop in a display-folded state of said baseball cap with a rear fraction of the crown folded forwardly inside a front fraction of the crown; anda catch opening that is delimited, at least in part, by the catch loop, and into which the top button of the cap is liftable by a user and slidable away from the base to wedge an inside edge of the catch loop, at a distal end of the cap opening furthest from the base, under the top button of the baseball cap to thereby hang said baseball cap by the top button thereof;wherein the catch loop and the base are cooperatively configured so that, in the working position of the catch loop, and in attached relation thereof to the base, at least the inside edge of the catch loop, slopes downwardly away from the base to gravitationally encourage wedged engagement of the catch loop beneath the top button of the cap.
19. The cap holder of claim 18 wherein the catch loop and the base are cooperatively configured so that, with the catch loop in attached relation to the base, at least the inside edge of the catch loop resides at an angle of greater than 90-degrees to the front face of the base.
20. The cap holder of claim 18 wherein the catch loop and the base are attached to one another, and at least the inside edge of the catch loop resides at an angle of greater than 90-degrees to the front face of the base.
21. The cap holder of claim 18 wherein the cap holder consists solely of the catch loop and the base.
22. The cap holder of claim 18 wherein the catch loop of the cap holder, with the base and the catch loop thereof attached together, is an only component of the cap holder having a forwardly protrusive relation from the front face of the base.
23. The cap holder of claim 18 wherein the catch loop of the cap holder is a sole component thereof by which the baseball cap is engaged by the cap holder when hung therefrom by the top button.
24. The cap holder of claim 23 in combination with said baseball cap, said baseball cap being hung by the cap holder solely by engagement of the top button by the catch loop.
