Threading the MOLLE clip through the strips of fabric secures dispensing apparatus 20 to the user.
[0109] In some embodiments, attachment interface 28 comprises two separable parts. One of the parts may be attached (removably or non-removably) to an individual's clothing; the other part may be attached to housing 22. The two parts have a coupling that enables the two parts to be detachably affixed to one another. In some embodiments, attachment interface 28 comprises a hook and loop fastener such as Velcro™. One component of the hook and loop fastener is affixed to housing 22, and the other component of the hook and loop fastener is affixed to a desired object such as a piece of clothing. In some embodiments, one component of the hook and loop fastener is affixed to the dashboard of a motor vehicle, and the other component of the hook and loop fastener mechanism is affixed to housing 22. In other embodiments, one component of the hook and loop fastener mechanism is affixed to a piece of furniture, and the other component of the hook and loop fastener mechanism is affixed to housing 22. In some embodiments, attachment interface 28 comprises a magnet affixed to housing 22. The magnet may then be used to hold dispensing apparatus 20 to any ferrous metal material. In some embodiments, attachment interface 28 comprises a pair of magnets, with one of the magnets affixed to an individual's clothing, and the other magnet affixed to housing 22.
[0110] Referring to FIG. 2A, attachment interface 28 in this non-limiting example comprises a clip 27 that has a first end 27A and a second end 27B. Clip 27 is hinged about hinge 27C, with the clip in this case hingedly coupling to housing 22 via hinge 27C. Hinge 27C is sprung such that second end 27B of clip 27 is biased towards being in contact with housing 22. Detent 29 is affixed to housing 22 of dispensing apparatus 20 via a detent stem 29C in this example. Detent 29 is arranged such that when second end 27B of clip 27 is lifted away from housing 22, first end 27A of clip 27 is held in place by detent 29. By holding in place first end 27A of clip 27, detent 29 resists the spring force imposed by hinge 27C that would otherwise urge second end 27B of clip 27 back into contact with housing 22.
[0111] When detent 29 is engaged with first end 27A of clip 27, attachment interface 28 is in an open position. Maintaining attachment interface 28 in the open position is advantageous if one wishes to affix attachment interface 28 to an item of clothing, as it reduces the dexterity needed to affix attachment interface 28 to an item of clothing while also depressing first end 27A of clip 27 against the force of hinge 27C.
[0112] In some embodiments, clip 27 is configured to allow a user to stand dispensing apparatus 20 on a surface. When clip 27 is in the open position, second end 27B of clip 27 and the bottom of housing 22 form a base on which dispensing apparatus 20 can be rested.
[0113] In some embodiments, to revert attachment interface 28 from the open position to the closed position, a user depresses first end 29A of detent 29. Depressing first end 29A of detent 29 bends detent 29 about detent stem 29C. Bending detent 29 about detent stem 29C releases first end 27A of clip 27 from second end 29B of detent 29. Once first end 27A of clip 27 is released, hinge 27C causes attachment interface 28 to close by biasing second end 27B of clip 27 back into contact with housing 22.
[0114] As seen in FIG. 2B, attachment interface 28 includes a bias mechanism 27D. In some embodiments, bias mechanism 27D is operable to bias second end 27B of clip 27 into contact with housing 22. In some embodiments, bias mechanism 27D is operable to bias second end 27B of clip 27 into close proximity with housing 22. In some embodiments, bias mechanism 27D comprises a bent sheet of an elastically deformable metal. Hinge 27C is depicted as a rod that passes through mating holes 27E on clip 27, and mating holes 27F on housing 22.
[0115] Attachment interface 28 as described herein enables a user to affix dispensing apparatus 20 to an item of clothing. Given that dispensing apparatus 20 can be worn by an individual, the colour of housing 22 on dispensing apparatus 20 may be customized. In some embodiments, the colour, design and / or texture of housing 22 may be customized or customizable to match a uniform design. For example, housing 22 could have a camouflage design if being used by a member of a military. In some embodiments, housing 22 is customized to display a logo. For example, housing 22 may bear a logo or a coat of arms of an organization.
[0116] FIG. 3A is a perspective view of dispensing apparatus 20 with door 30 in an open position according to an example embodiment. Door 30 is configured to allow access to a cavity 35 for receiving cartridge 32.
[0117] FIG. 3A shows door 30 hinged about hinge 30A. Door 30 hinges outwards from hinge 30A about bottom edge 30E of door 30. Door 30 is shown in an open position in FIG. 3A. Door 30 is shown in a closed position in FIG. 1C. Door 30 is configured to facilitate rapid and convenient access to cavity 35.
[0118] Dispensing apparatus 20 may include a latch operable to hold door 30 in a closed position.
[0119] In some embodiments, the latch comprises a pair of magnets 30B which hold door 30 closed when door 30 is in a closed position (shown in FIG. 1C). A user can pull on tab 30C to separate the pair of magnets 30B and move door 30 to an open position, as depicted in FIG. 3A. In some embodiments, door 30 has one magnet 30B and a piece of ferrous material with which the one magnet 30B engages. Other types of latches may be provided to allow door 30 to be opened, for example to change out cartridge 32.
[0120] Other embodiments may use different approaches to allow access to the interior of dispensing apparatus 20. For example, in some embodiments, door 30 is configured to have a set of pins on one side, with a clip on the opposite side, with receptacles for the pins and clip on housing 22. In some embodiments, door 30 is omitted to enable easy access to remove and replace cartridge 32.
[0121] Cartridge 32 is held inside cavity 35 in housing 22. Cartridge 32 holds fluid to be dispensed. Cartridge 32 is replaceable. Upon the fluid within the cartridge 32 being generally or substantially dispensed, a user can open door 30 to remove cartridge 32, and place a new cartridge 32 in cavity 35 of dispensing apparatus 20. Cartridge 32 preferably has a rigid or semi-rigid construction. Cartridge 32 may comprise a rigid or semi-rigid material.
[0122] FIG. 3B shows cartridge 32 being removed from dispensing apparatus 20 according to an example embodiment. By pulling cartridge 32 out of dispensing apparatus 20 in the direction represented by arrow 32A, cartridge 32 can be removed. Dispensing apparatus 20 includes a chassis 37 in this non-limiting example shaped to facilitate guiding of cartridge 32 therewithin.
[0123] In some embodiments, a pull tab is provided to assist with the removal of cartridge 32 from dispensing apparatus 20. For example, as shown in FIG. 3C, a pull tab 33 may be affixed at an anchor point 33A on one side of cavity 35 and may wrap around the end of cartridge 32. A user may grasp and pull on a free end of pull tab 33 to assist with removing cartridge 32 from chamber 31 of dispensing apparatus 20.
[0124] In some embodiments, pull tab 33 contains graphical and / or textual instructions for use of dispensing apparatus 20. In some embodiments, the pull tab is affixed to chassis 37, wrapping around cartridge 32 when cartridge 32 is inserted into dispensing apparatus 20. Pulling on the pull tab in this embodiment partially removes cartridge 32 from dispensing apparatus 20, enabling easier removal of cartridge 32 from dispensing apparatus 20.
[0125] Cartridge 32 contains a fluid. In particular, cartridge 32 is intended to contain a fluid that can be used as hand sanitizer. The hand sanitizer may, for example, comprise an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or any other hand sanitizer.
[0126] Cartridge 32 is depicted as having a substantially rectangular flattened shape. In some embodiments, cartridge 32 has a different shape, for example (but not limited to) a cylinder, a cube, or an ellipsoid.
[0127] FIG. 4A is a perspective view of cartridge 32 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 4B is an internal view of dispensing apparatus 20 showing cartridge 32 being replaced according to an example embodiment. Cartridge 32 comprises seal 34. Seal 34 allows dispensing apparatus 20 to dispense the fluid from within cartridge 32. Cartridge 32 is inserted into dispensing apparatus 20 by moving cartridge 32 in the direction represented by arrow 32B. Chassis 37, located within housing 22, guides cartridge 32 such that spur 36 pierces seal 34 when cartridge 32 is inserted into dispensing apparatus 20 in the direction represented by arrow 32B. Upon inserting cartridge 32 into dispensing apparatus 20, seal 34 is pierced by spur 36.
[0128] Spur 36 is tubular such that it forms a through passage through which liquid can flow. Tip 36A of spur 36 is configured to provide a pointed edge that can pierce seal 34. An end portion of spur 36 near tip 36A may be tapered in diameter. The taper of spur 36 may interface with a corresponding surface inside seal 34 to improve the fluid-tight seal between spur 36 and cartridge 32.
[0129] Seal 34 is made from a material that keeps fluid contained within cartridge 32 while cartridge 32 is not in use and that can be pierced by spur 36 when cartridge 32 is inserted within dispensing apparatus 20. By way of non limiting examples, seal 34 may comprise a polymer, an elastomer, a thin sheet of aluminum, an aluminum plastic laminate, and / or a sheet of plastic-coated paper.
[0130] Gasket 34A may be provided on the perimeter of seal 34. Gasket 34A, when present, may help to improve sealing between cartridge 32 and spur 36. When cartridge 32 is moved in direction 32B and spur 36 pierces seal 34, gasket 34A encircles spur perimeter 36B, thereby creating a fluid-tight seal. Gasket 34A is preferably made of a deformable material such as rubber to further improve the fluid-tight seal between cartridge 32 and spur 36.
[0131] In some embodiments, cartridge 32 includes a vent which allows air to enter cartridge 32 as fluid is removed from cartridge 32. In some embodiments, small amounts of air are allowed to enter cartridge 32 through the interface between seal 34 and spur 36 or through seal 34 as fluid is withdrawn from cartridge 32. In some embodiments, portions of one or more walls of cartridge 32 are thin such that upon pressure being reduced within cartridge 32, a part of the wall of cartridge 32 is deformed. In some embodiments, dispensing apparatus 20 includes a stylet or needle or the like that punctures cartridge 32 to provide a vent when cartridge 32 is inserted into dispensing apparatus 20. For example, the stylet or the like may be provided on the inner wall of chamber 31 or on door 30 so that an air hole is pricked in cartridge 32 upon cartridge 32 being inserted into dispensing apparatus 20 or upon door 30 being closed.
[0132] When cartridge 32 is moved in direction 32B and spur 36 pierces seal 34, spur 36 will be fluidly connected to the liquid inside of cartridge 32. The liquid inside of cartridge 32 can then flow from cartridge 32 through the tubular through passage formed by spur 36.
[0133] There are at least two advantages associated with cartridge 32 being replaceable. One advantage is that a replaceable cartridge enables rapid replenishment of the fluid carried by dispensing apparatus 20. A user of dispensing apparatus 20 can carry spare cartridges 32 with them to enable continued and extended use of dispensing apparatus 20. The cartridges may be sturdy, rigid, or semi-rigid cartridges that can be safely stored in a pocket, glove compartment or the like. A second advantage associated with cartridge 32 being replaceable is that it enables a user to change the fluid being dispensed from dispensing apparatus 20 (for example, changing from hand sanitizer to ointment), as the apparatus will dispense whatever fluid is contained within cartridge 32.
[0134] In some embodiments, cartridge 32 is refillable. In some embodiments, cartridge 32 is recyclable. In some embodiments, cartridge 32 is disposable. In some embodiments, cartridge 32 is both recyclable and disposable.
[0135] In some embodiments, dispensing apparatus 20 includes an indicator which indicates when a cartridge 32 needs replacing and / or the amount of fluid remaining in cartridge 32. The indicator may, for example, be visual and / or audible. Some embodiments provide an indicator light on housing 22 that illuminates upon the amount of fluid remaining in the cartridge reaching a prescribed level. Some embodiments include an electroacoustic transducer that emits a noise when the amount of fluid remaining in the cartridge 32 reaches a prescribed level. The electroacoustic transducer may, for example, comprise a speaker, a buzzer or the like. In some embodiments, the visual indicator comprises a display (e.g. an OLED display or an LCD display) located on housing 22 that provides a readout indicative of an amount of fluid remaining in cartridge 32.
[0136] Given the small form-factor of dispensing apparatus 20, it is not possible for dispensing apparatus 20 to contain large amounts of fluid for dispensing without becoming unwieldy when worn by an individual due to the weight of dispensing apparatus 20. For this reason, cartridge 32 may have a capacity of, for example, 40 mL of fluid. Because of the relatively small volume of fluid held by cartridge 32, cartridge 32 is replaceable. This enables continued and extended use of small and light weight dispensing apparatus 20. In some embodiments, dispensing apparatus 20 weighs less than 6 oz or 7 oz. For example, dispensing apparatus 20 may weigh in the range of 4 to 6 oz.
[0137] FIG. 5 is a perspective view of dispensing apparatus 20 with housing 22 removed according to an example embodiment. FIG. 5 shows conduit 38, power source 40, and a metering mechanism which, in the illustrated embodiment comprises actuator 42. Conduit 38 is fluidly connected to spur 36 (shown in FIG. 4B). Spur 36 is fluidly connected to the liquid within cartridge 32. Conduit 38 is fluidly connected to actuator 42. Actuator 42 is fluidly connected to outlet 26.
[0138] The metering mechanism is actuated to dispense a quantity of fluid from outlet 26 in response to engagement interface 24 being operated (e.g. by a user pressing or touching engagement interface 24 with their hand). When the metering mechanism is actuated, actuator 42 dispenses a prescribed volume of fluid from cartridge 32 to outlet 26.
[0139] In the example embodiment of FIG. 5, actuator 42 is a pump. The pump in the example embodiment of FIG. 5 is electrically coupled to power source 40. Power source 40 is depicted as a battery. In FIG. 5, the battery is depicted as a rechargeable battery, rechargeable through recharging interface 41. In some embodiments, recharging interface 41 is powered by a USB connector. Other embodiments may utilize different power sources. In some embodiments, power source 40 comprises one or more suitable batteries (e.g. AA, AAA, C, or D types). In some embodiments, the battery is accessible for replacement by way of another door, similar in function to door 30.
[0140] Some embodiments include an indicator that indicates the level of power remaining in power source 40. The indicator may, for example, be visual and / or audible. For example, in some embodiments, the power level indicator comprises an indicator light. The indicator light may, for example, be an LED (light emitting diode). In some embodiments, the power level indicator is located on or near recharging interface 41. In some embodiments, the power level indicator is located on housing 22.
[0141] Dispensing apparatus 20 includes a grommet 39 seen in FIGS. 5 and 5A. Grommet 39 helps to provide a moisture and dust-tight seal within housing 22. Grommet 39 is located at the interfaces between the various components on housing 22, including (but not limited to) in between door 30 and housing 22, engagement interface 24 and housing 22, outlet 26 and housing 22, and around the edges of housing 22. In some embodiments, grommet 39 provides a seal between chassis 37 and housing 22 and also provides a seal around the edges of cavity 35.
[0142] FIG. 6 is a perspective view of conduit 38 and actuator 42 according to an example embodiment. Conduit 38 is coupled to spur 36 (see FIG. 4B) which is fluidly connected to the fluid in cartridge 32. Because actuator 42 in the example embodiment shown in FIG. 6 is an electrically powered pump, wires 44 and 46 electrically couple actuator 42 to a circuit which delivers power from power source 40 (see FIG. 5) to operate actuator 42 when engagement interface 24 has been actuated.
[0143] In some embodiments, actuator 42 is customizable to dispense a particular volume of fluid or dosage. For example, actuator 42 may be configured to dispense fluid in 1 mL or 2 mL increments upon operation of engagement interface 24. In some embodiments, actuator 42 is configured to dispense fluid in increments ranging between 0.5 mL to 20 mL. In some embodiments, actuator 42 is configured dispense or meter out a dosage generally or substantially in conformity with World Health Organization (WHO) and / or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) mandated dosage protocols.
[0144] Upon engaging with engagement interface 24, an electronic circuit controls delivery of power to actuator 42 through wires 44 and 46. The electronic circuit may be configured to supply power to actuator 42 for a prescribed period and / or a prescribed number of pulses, thereby dispensing a desired quantity of the fluid at outlet 26. The length of the prescribed period and / or the number of pulses may be customizable to adjust how much fluid actuator 42 dispenses each time it is triggered by operation of engagement interface 24. The longer the prescribed period and / or the more pulses, the more fluid will be dispensed. Upon the expiration of the prescribed period, power to the actuator is stopped, thereby stopping the fluid from being dispensed.
[0145] In some embodiments, actuator 42 is a pump of a type that delivers a set amount of fluid per cycle. In such embodiments actuator 42 may be operated for one or more cycles (depending on the desired amount of fluid to be released) each time engagement interface 24 is operated. In some embodiments, actuator 42 comprises a pump having an adjustable cycle volume and the amount of fluid to be released is adjustable by adjusting the cycle volume of the pump.
[0146] As described herein, dispensing apparatus 20 may be used by front line workers to protect themselves and to protect persons with whom they may come into contact. The apparatus may be implemented in situations that require convenient and immediate access to hand sanitizer. By facilitating rapid access to hand sanitizer, the apparatus can improve the safety of the front line workers themselves, and the individuals they are serving. For example, a police officer may use dispensing apparatus 20 to maintain access to hand sanitizer throughout the day. The police officer could attach dispensing apparatus 20 to their belt. The police officer would likely be wearing a belt containing bulky equipment, and as such, they would first lift second end 27B of clip 27 such that first end 27A of clip 27 is held in place by detent 29. The police officer could then place clip 27 over their belt, and press first end 29A of detent 29 to release first end 27A of clip 27. At this point, dispensing apparatus 20 would be affixed to the police officer's belt by clip 27. Then, as required, the police officer can engage with engagement interface 24 to release hand sanitizer from dispensing apparatus 20. Since engagement interface 24 is placed on a portion of housing 22 that is recessed, accidental engagements with engagement interface 24 are avoided. If dispensing apparatus 20 runs out of hand sanitizer, then the police officer can quickly open door 30 on the side of housing 22, remove cartridge 32, and insert a replacement cartridge 32.
[0147] At the end of the day, the police officer may remove dispensing apparatus 20 from their belt. If they find themselves completing paperwork at a desk, they can stand dispensing apparatus 20 on their desk by lifting second end 27B of clip 27 such that first end 27A of clip 27 is held in place by detent 29. Second end 27B of clip 27 and the bottom of housing 22 then form a base on which dispensing apparatus 20 can stand for easy access.
[0148] FIGS. 7 to 14B show cartridge 32.1, a sealing element 110 therefor, as well as piercing element 120, aperture 130, valve 140, mounting system 150, and armband 160 according to an example embodiment. Except where the context clearly requires otherwise, those elements of FIGS. 7 to 14 that have been identified with references that share the same numbers (with the decimal extension “0.1”) as FIGS. 1 to 6 have the same or similar functions as described with respect to FIGS. 1 to 6.
[0149] FIG. 7 is a cross-sectional view of cartridge 32.1 according to an example embodiment. Cartridge 32.1 has an opening 105, which is generally or substantially circular in this non-limiting example. Sealing element 110, which in some embodiments is elastomeric and / or flexible, is shaped to cover opening 105. Sealing element 110 may comprise and / or be referred to as a bung. In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 7, apparatus 20.1 comprises piercing element 120, which pierces sealing element 110 when cartridge 32.1 is inserted into housing 22.1 of apparatus 20.1, in this non-limiting example upon being generally or substantially fully inserted therein. A metering mechanism (e.g. actuator 42.1, not shown in FIG. 7) is fluidly connected to piercing element 120 in this example embodiment, and may be operable to draw liquid from cartridge 32.1 to outlet 26.1 (not shown in FIG. 7) when cartridge 32.1 is inserted into housing 22.1.
[0150] As liquid is drawn from cartridge 32.1 by the metering mechanism, a negative pressure may be generated in cartridge 32.1. As shown in FIG. 10D, sealing element 110 deforms in response to the negative pressure within cartridge 32.1 to allow air to enter cartridge 32.1 via opening 105 as liquid is removed from cartridge 32.1.
[0151] FIG. 8A is a front perspective view of sealing element 110 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 8B is a rear perspective view of sealing element 110 according to an example embodiment.
[0152] In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 8A and FIG. 8B, sealing element 110 comprises tubular body 115 which extends along and about longitudinal axis 110A. In some embodiments, an external surface 115S of tubular body 115 abuts with rim 106 on cartridge 32.1, which defines opening 105 (not shown in FIG. 8A or FIG. 8B, but shown in FIG. 7). External surface 115S is outwardly convex in this non-limiting example.
[0153] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 comprises a laterally-extending or central membrane 116. Central membrane 116 extends across an interior 115I of tubular body 115. Central membrane 116 is piercable by piercing element 120.
[0154] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 has a radially outwardly extending tapered surface 114 seen in FIG. 8B that abuts with rim 106 defining opening 105 on cartridge 32.1. The provision of tapered surface 114 may promote a more secure and / or interference fit between sealing element 110 and cartridge 32.1 when sealing element 110 is inserted into opening 105 thereof.
[0155] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 is rotationally symmetric about longitudinal axis 110A.
[0156] In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 8A and FIG. 8B, sealing element 110 includes in this non-limiting example a first flange 113A and second flange 113B longitudinally spaced from the first flange thereof. Each flange couples to and extends radially outwards from tubular body 115. First flange 113A and second flange 113B may extend radially outwards from tubular body 115. First flange 113A and second flange 113B may be positioned at opposite ends of tubular body 115. When sealing element 110 is inserted into opening 105 on cartridge 32.1, first flange 113A is shaped to abut and / or frictionally engage with interior side 106-1 of rim 106 facing interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 (shown in FIG. 7), and second flange 113B is shaped to abut and / or frictionally engage with exterior side 106-2 of rim 106 facing the exterior of cartridge 32.1 (shown in FIG. 7). The provision of first flange 113A and second flange 113B, which are abuttable with opposite sides of rim 106, may result in a more secure fit of sealing element 110 in opening 105.
[0157] In some embodiments, second flange 113B extends radially outwards from tubular body 115 to a greater extent than first flange 113A.
[0158] FIG. 8C is a cross-sectional view of sealing element 110 according to an example embodiment. As visible in FIG. 8C, central membrane 116 on sealing element 110 has a thickness (i.e., a dimension in a direction parallel to longitudinal axis 110A) that decreases from a periphery 116P towards a center 116C of central membrane 116. Cylindrical tube 115 has a wall thickness TW which is greater than that at least adjacent center 116C of central membrane 116.
[0159] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 comprises inner end portion 110I and outer end portion 110O. Inner end 110I may be positionable within an interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 (shown in FIG. 7), and outer end 110O may be positionable outside of cartridge 32.1. In some embodiments, first flange 113A tapers in a direction extending outside cartridge 32.1 towards interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 (i.e., the direction represented by arrow 119A in FIG. 7). In some embodiments, second flange 113B tapers in a direction extending from interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 towards outside cartridge 32.1 (i.e., the direction represented by arrow 119B in FIG. 7).
[0160] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 has inner bore 118I and outer bore 118O. Outer bore 118O may extend from outside of cartridge 32.1 towards interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1. Inner bore 118I may extend from interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 towards outside of cartridge 32.1. Inner bore 118I may be adjacent interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1.
[0161] In some embodiments, outer bore 118O tapers in a direction extending outside of cartridge 32.1 towards interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 (i.e., in the direction represented by arrow 119A in FIG. 7). In some embodiments, inner bore 118I tapers in a direction extending outside of cartridge 32.1 towards interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 (i.e., in the direction represented by arrow 119A in FIG. 7).
[0162] In some embodiments, outer bore 118O is generally or substantially frustoconical in lateral section and / or inner bore 118I is generally or substantially frustoconical in lateral section.
[0163] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 includes inner annular surface 118OS which extends about outer bore 118O. In this example, sealing element 110 includes an annular portion 118A positioned within interior 115I of tubular body 115. Annular portion 118A of sealing element 110 couples to and extends radially inwards from inner annular surface 118OS in this example. Annular portion 118A may be near or adjacent outer end 110O of sealing element 110. Annular portion 118A may have a diameter DA less than an outer diameter DO of sealing element 110. In some embodiments, annular portion 118A may comprise an isosceles trapezoid in lateral section.
[0164] In some embodiments, sealing element 110 comprises a polymer, in this example an elastomer, in this non-limiting case ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber; however, the latter is not strictly required and the sealing element may be made of materials in other examples. In some embodiments, sealing element 110 has a Shore A hardness of less than or equal to 60. In some embodiments, sealing element 110 is made of a material that is resistant to ethyl alcohol. In some embodiments, sealing element 110 is black. In some embodiments, a volume of sealing element 110 is approximately 0.12 cc (cubic centimeters).
[0165] FIG. 8D is a perspective view of piercing element 120 according to an example embodiment. Piercing element 120 comprises an elongate tubular body 121 that extends along longitudinal axis 124 thereof. In some embodiments, piercing element 120 is radially symmetrical about longitudinal axis 124. In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 8D, a distal end 120D of piercing element 120 is tapered, with piercing element 120 having a beveled or tapered surface 123 adjacent thereto. Tapered surface 123 converges to form edge 122. Edge 122 is shaped to pierce central membrane 116 of sealing element 110 (not shown in FIG. 8D, but shown in FIG. 8A, FIG. 8B, and FIG. 8C).
[0166] FIG. 9 is a front, side, top perspective view of cartridge 32.1 according to an example embodiment. As described previously with reference to FIG. 8A and FIG. 8B, sealing element 110 is positioned within opening 105 (obscured in FIG. 9, but shown in FIG. 7) of cartridge 32.1 and is shaped to both partially extend through opening 105 and sealably and / or interference fit couple to cartridge 32.1. When sealing element 110 is so positioned, sealing element 110 provides a fluid-tight seal to retain liquid within cartridge 32.1. The fluid tight seal may permit a user, such as a law enforcement officer, to carry one or more spare cartridges 32.1 without risk of liquid leakage from cartridge 32.1 during storage or transport.
[0167] FIG. 10A is a front perspective view of cartridge 32.1 comprising sealing element 110 being inserted within apparatus 20.1 according to an example embodiment. During insertion, cartridge 32.1 is moved in the direction represented by arrow 32B.1. In some embodiments, chassis 37.1, located within housing 22.1 of apparatus 20.1, guides cartridge 32.1 so that piercing element 120 pierces sealing element 110 when cartridge 32.1 is inserted into cavity 35.1.
[0168] FIGS. 10B to 10D are cross-sectional views that illustrate the operation of sealing element 110 according to an example embodiment.
[0169] FIG. 10B shows sealing element 110 immediately prior to being pierced by piercing element 120. As cartridge 32.1 is inserted into apparatus 20.1, edge 122 of piercing element 120 abuts and in this non-limiting example biases inwards membrane 116. Membrane 116 so positioned flares outwards in a direction extending from inner end portion 110I towards outer end portion 110O of sealing element 110. Membrane 116 so biased encloses a first space or first passageway 110P which is annular in this non-limiting example and which tapers in a direction extending from periphery 116P towards center 116C thereof.
[0170] FIG. 10C shows sealing element 110 after being pierced by piercing element 120. Upon piercing membrane 116, elongate tubular body 121 of piercing element 120 is in fluid communication with liquid in cartridge 32.1. In some embodiments, membrane 116 forms a fluid tight seal with body 121 of piercing element 120.
[0171] As the metering mechanism removes liquid from cartridge 32.1, the gas pressure within interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1 may reduce below the ambient gas pressure outside of cartridge 32.1. This pressure differential (which may be referred to as a negative pressure) is undesirable as it may cause deformation of cartridge 32.1. The negative pressure may additionally or alternatively place increased strain on the metering mechanism, potentially impairing the ability of the metering mechanism to draw liquid from cartridge 32.1.
[0172] When there is a negative pressure in cartridge 32.1, sealing element 110 deforms to allow air to be drawn into cartridge 32.1, thereby increasing the pressure within cartridge 32.1.
[0173] Without wishing to be bound by theory, the inventor posits that when there is a negative pressure in cartridge 32.1, a higher pressure is exerted on an exterior surface 116E of central membrane 116 than on interior surface 116I of central membrane 116. In embodiments where membrane 116 is flexible and / or elastomeric, this pressure differential causes the central membrane 116 to deform inwardly toward interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1, as shown in FIG. 10D. The deformation creates a temporary second space or second passageway 116A between membrane 116 and body 121 of piercing element 120, allowing a volume of air to be drawn into the cartridge 32.1, as indicated by arrows 117. Second passageway 116A is annular in one non-limiting example. Second passageway 116A is near or adjacent center 116C of membrane 116 in this example and in fluid communication with first passageway. The ingress of air relieves the negative pressure within cartridge 32.1. Once the pressure is substantially equalized, the natural resiliency of the membrane 116 and / or the hydraulic pressure from liquid in cartridge 32.1 acting on interior surface 116I of membrane 116 causes membrane 116 to return to its sealed position against piercing element 120 (as shown in FIG. 10C), thereby preventing liquid within cartridge 32.1 from leaking out.
[0174] Central membrane 116 of sealing element 110 and / or piercing element 120 are thus configured and / or sized so as to enable the sealing force of central membrane 116 exerted on outer surface 120OS of piercing element 120 to be overcome upon the pressure differential between atmospheric pressure and pressure within cartridge 32.1 reaching and / or exceeding a set and / or predetermined threshold. Sealing element 110 deforms to allow air to be drawn into cartridge 32.1 at least in part in the form of central membrane 116 moving away and / or outwards from piercing element 120, in this non-limiting example moving radially outwards from outer surface of piercing element 120. Sealing element 110 deforms to allow air to be drawn into cartridge 32.1 at least in part in the form of interior surface 116I of central membrane 116 becoming outwardly concave and / or more outwardly concave. Sealing element 110 deforms to allow air to be drawn into cartridge 32.1 at least in part in the form of exterior surface 116E of central membrane 116 becoming outwardly convex and / or more outwardly convex in one non-limiting embodiment. Sealing element 110 deforms to allow air to be drawn into cartridge 32.1 at least in part in the form of central membrane 116 moving both longitudinally inwards and radially outwards relative to piercing element 120 according to another non-limiting example.
[0175] FIG. 11A and FIG. 11B show cartridge 32.1 according to an example embodiment.
[0176] FIG. 11A is a front perspective view of cartridge 32.1. In some embodiments, cartridge 32.1 comprises sealing element 110 covering opening 105, as described above with respect to FIGS. 7 to 10. In some embodiments, cartridge 32.1 comprises aperture 130. Aperture 130 is fluidly connected to interior 32.1I of cartridge 32.1.
[0177] FIG. 11B is a front perspective view of cartridge 32.1. In FIG. 11B, membrane 131 is coupled to cartridge 32.1 and covers aperture 130. Aperture is positioned near or adjacent the top of cartridge 32.1 in this example. Membrane 131 is shaped and / or configured to inhibit passage of liquid through aperture 130. Membrane 131 is shaped and / or configured to permit passage of gas therethrough. By permitting gas to pass therethrough, membrane 131 may ameliorate the formation of a negative pressure within cartridge 32.1 when liquid therewithin is being dispensed therefrom. In some embodiments, membrane 131 removes the need for sealing element 110 specifically configured to selectively deform to relieve negative pressure within cartridge 32.1. In other embodiments, both membrane 131 and sealing element 110 are used together to selectively relieve and / or inhibit build-up of negative pressure within cartridge 32.1.
[0178] In some embodiments and referring back to FIG. 11B, membrane 131 is a thin, microporous membrane. Membrane 131 may additionally or alternatively be waterproof and breathable. In some embodiments, membrane 131 comprises expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE).
[0179] Membrane 131 may couple to cartridge 32.1 using various methods. By way of non-limiting example, membrane 131 may couple to cartridge 32.1 by way of induction sealing. In some embodiments, membrane 131 is coupled to cartridge 32.1 by way of an adhesive.
[0180] In some embodiments, aperture 130 is less than 1 mm in diameter.
[0181] Although the example embodiment shown in FIG. 11A and FIG. 11B depicts cartridge 32.1 comprising aperture 130 covered by membrane 131 together with element 110 covering opening 105, in some embodiments aperture 130 and membrane 131 is instead used with cartridge 32 and breakable seal 34 as described with respect to FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B.
[0182] FIG. 12A and FIG. 12B, are respectively a front perspective view and rear perspective view of valve 140 according to an example embodiment. Valve 140 is a check valve in one non-limiting embodiment. FIG. 12C and FIG. 12D are respectively cross-sectional views of valve 140 according to an example embodiment. Valve 140 may have utility in apparatus 20.1 as described herein or apparatus 20 shown in FIG. 1A, for example.
[0183] Valve 140 has an inlet 142A and an outlet 142B. In some embodiments, inlet 142A is fluidly connected to piercing element 120 or spur 36. In some embodiments, outlet 142B couples to outlet 26.1 of dispensing apparatus 20.1 or outlet 26 of dispensing apparatus 20. In some embodiments, valve 140 is selectively removable and / or replaceable. In this non-limiting example, an exterior of valve 140 comprises one or more ribs 140R. In embodiments where valve 140 is press fit into housing 22.1 of apparatus 20.1, ribs 140R facilitate a secure press fit installation of valve 140 thereto. As seen in FIG. 5, apparatus 20 includes a mount 25 via which valve 140 is selectively coupleable thereto and removable therefrom in this example. Mount 25 substantially encloses valve 140 and inhibits access and / or damage thereto. Mount 25 extends along an axis 25A which is non-parallel angle relative to longitudinal axis L and lateral axis T of apparatus 20. In some embodiments, mount 25 is shaped to position a longitudinal axis 143 of valve 140 at a non-parallel angle relative to longitudinal axis L and lateral axis T of housing 20. Mount 25 has an outwardly facing or outer face 25OF with an aperture 25AP extending therethrough, and an inner peripheral portion 25I extending about and defining aperture 25AP. Longitudinal axis 143 of valve 140 is coaxial with axis 25A, face 25OF and aperture 25AP of mount in this example. Outlet 142B of valve 140 is adjacent and in fluid communication with aperture 25AP of mount 25. In this example, mount 25 (and / or outer face 25OF and / or aperture 25AP thereof) are shaped to extend about valve outlet 142B so as to form a space, in this example an annular space 25AN therebetween. Inner peripheral portion 25I of outer face 25OF is radially outwardly spaced from valve outlet 142B a distance 25D which inhibits inadvertent dispersal of liquid within and / or inwardly through annular space 25AN. Inner peripheral portion 25I of outer face 25OF is radially outwardly spaced from valve outlet 142B by a distance 25D selected to inhibit inadvertent dispersal of liquid within and / or inwardly through annular space 25AN. due to capillary action and / or a suck back action on the one hand, inhibit inadvertent dislodgement of valve 140 relative to mount 25 on the other hand, promote enclosure of and / or protection of valve 140 (and / or outlet thereof) on the further hand, and / or inhibit inadvertent, contaminated and / or outside contact with the valve (and / or outlet thereof on the additional hand. Distance 25D is generally or substantially equal to or greater than 1 mm in one non-limiting embodiment, generally or substantially equal to or less than 2 mm in another non-limiting example and generally or substantially equal to or less than 3 mm in another non-limiting example.
[0184] In some embodiments, outlet 142B has a diameter 142BD that is equal to or less than half of a diameter 142AD of the valve inlet in one non-limiting embodiment, equal to or less than ⅖th of that of the valve inlet in another non-limiting embodiment and equal to or less than ⅓rd of that of the valve inlet in a further non-limiting embodiment. The valve outlet diameter is less than 0.35 mm in one non-limiting example, less than 0.30 mm in another non-limiting example, and less than 0.21 mm in a further non-limiting example.
[0185] As shown in the cross-sectional view of FIG. 12C, valve 140 comprises obstructing element 144 and valve seat 146. Valve seat 146 is shaped to sealingly engage with obstructing element 144. Valve 140 further comprises channel 145 and resilient member 147 positioned therein. Resilient member 147 biases obstructing element 144 into sealing engagement with valve seat 146 via a spring force.
[0186] A liquid pressure may be exerted on valve 140 at inlet 142A (e.g., via a metering mechanism coupled to cartridge 32.1). Upon the liquid pressure at inlet 142A reaching a level sufficient to overcome the spring force of biasing member 147, obstructing element 144 is dislodged from valve seat 146, as shown in FIG. 12D. When obstructing element 144 is dislodged from valve seat 146, valve 140 is configured to enable liquid to flow around obstructing element 144, through channel 145, and out of outlet 142B, as represented by lines 148.
[0187] When the liquid pressure at inlet 142A drops below a level sufficient to overcome the spring force of biasing member 147, obstructing element 144 is biased into sealing engagement with valve seat 146 by the spring force of biasing member 147. The spring force of biasing member 147 is configured and / or selected to inhibit inadvertent dripping of fluid outwards from outlet 142B. In some embodiments, the cracking pressure of valve 140 (i.e., the liquid pressure at which obstructing element is dislodged from valve seat 146) is less than 14 kPa (kilopascal).
[0188] Valve outlet 142B is shaped to jet liquid outwards therefrom, in this example by being smaller than valve inlet 142A in this example, so as to promote said jetting of liquid outwards therefrom. In some embodiments, obstructing element 144 is spherical in shape, and valve seat 146 includes a radially inwardly extending shoulder 146S.
[0189] In some embodiments, valve 140 includes a first, proximal or inlet valve body 140I which extends from inlet 142A towards outlet 142B thereof. Inlet valve body 140I is tubular and has a first or proximal end 140I-1 adjacent inlet 142A and a second or distal end 140I-2 spaced-apart longitudinally from the proximal end 140I-1 thereof. Ribs 140R extend from proximal end 140I-1 towards distal end 140I-2 of inlet valve body 140I in this example. Inlet valve body 140I includes a tubular portion 140I-T which extends continuously from distal end 140I-2 to ribs 140R so as to inhibit passage of fluid therethrough. Inlet valve body 140I has a first or inner bore 140II extending from proximal end 140I-1 / inlet 142A towards distal end 140I-2 / outlet 142B thereof. Inlet valve body 140I has a second or outer bore 140IO and a shoulder 146S forming valve seat 146 and which extends radially between inner 140II and outer bores 140IO thereof. Inlet valve body 140I may thus be said to comprise and / or function as a seat for obstructing element 144.
[0190] In some embodiments, valve 140 includes a second, distal or outlet valve body 140O which extends from outlet 142B towards inlet 142A and which is shaped to substantially extend within outer bore 140IO of inlet valve body 140I thereof in this non-limiting example. Outlet valve body 140O is tubular and includes a first, distal, enlarged or flanged end portion 140O-1 adjacent outlet 142B and shaped to abut distal end 140I-2 of inlet valve body 140I. Outlet valve body 140O includes a second, proximal end portion 140O-2 longitudinally spaced-apart from the flanged end portion 140O-1 thereof in this example. Proximal end portion 140O-2 of outlet body extends at a non-perpendicular angle relative to longitudinal axis 143 and / or may be said to comprise or be formed via a diagonal or miter cut. Outlet valve body 140O is insertable within outer bore 140IO of inlet valve body 140I via proximal end portion 140I-2 thereof.
[0191] Outlet valve body 140O has a first or outer bore 140OO extending from outlet 142B towards inlet 142A, a second or inner bore 140OI shaped to receive biasing member 147 therein, and a shoulder or biasing member seat 140OS extending radially between the inner bore 140OI and outer bores 140OO thereof and upon which an outer end 147O of biasing member 147 abuts. In this non-limiting example, outlet valve body 140O selectively couples to inlet valve body 140I (e.g. via threadable coupling or otherwise) so as to enable selective access to obstructing element 144 and / or biasing member 147 for replacement thereof and / or to selectively control and / or adjust the extent to which biasing member 147 biases against obstructing element 144 and thus selectively adjust / control said cracking pressure of valve 140. Outer bore 140OO of outlet valve body of valve 140 corresponds to outlet 142B of valve and is smaller than inner bore 140OI of outlet valve body 140O of valve 140, as well as smaller than inner 140II and outer bores 140IO of inlet valve body 140I. Outlet valve body 140O and / or valve 140 as a whole may be referred to and / or comprise a nozzle.
[0192] FIG. 12E is a front perspective view of apparatus 20.1 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 12F is an exploded view of apparatus 20.1 according to an example embodiment. As shown in the example embodiment of FIG. 12E, housing 22.1 of apparatus 20.1 has a longitudinal axis L and a lateral or transverse axis T. In some embodiments, valve 140 is positioned at and / or substantially adjacent outlet 26.1 on housing 22.1. Valve 140 (and / or valve outlet 142B thereof) comprises a last point of contact of the fluid.
[0193] FIG. 13A and FIG. 13B show mounting system 150 according to an example embodiment.
[0194] As shown in the exploded view in FIG. 13A, mounting system 150 comprises mount 152 and backing plate 153. Mount 152 is affixed to housing 22.1 on apparatus 20.1. Mount 152 comprises a plurality of mount magnets 154A, 154B, 154C, and 154D (collectively mount magnets 154). Mounting system 150 further comprises backing plate 153. Backing plate 153 comprises a plurality of backing plate magnets 155A, 155B, 155C, and 155D (collectively backing plate magnets 155).
[0195] FIG. 13B shows mounting system 150 in use. To affix apparatus 20.1 to a user (e.g., an article of clothing worn by a user), backing plate 153 is arrangeable relative mount 152 so that each of the backing plate magnets 155 can be aligned with a respective one of the mount magnets 154. When so aligned, the magnetic attraction between backing plate magnets 155 and mount magnets 154 magnetically couples backing plate 153 to mount 152. In some embodiments, a user may position an article of clothing (e.g., a vest of a police officer) between backing plate 153 and mount 152 to thereby secure apparatus 20.1 to the article of clothing.
[0196] FIG. 14A is a rear perspective view of apparatus 20.1 comprising armband 160 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 14B is a front perspective view of apparatus 20.1 comprising armband 160 according to an example embodiment.
[0197] Armband 160 comprises band 161 that is positionable on an arm of a user. In some embodiments, band 161 is elasticated.
[0198] In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 14A and FIG. 14B, band 161 is secured to housing 22.1 of apparatus 20.1 between clip 27.1 and housing 22.1.
[0199] In some embodiments, armband 160 is adjustable. By way of example, a circumference of band 161 may be adjusted by an adjustment mechanism comprising buckle 163 and fastener 162. In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 14A and FIG. 14B, band 161 comprises first loose end 161-1 and a second fixed end 161-2. Second fixed end 161-2 of band 161 may be secured to buckle 163. First loose end 161-1 comprises fastener 162, which detachably couples to interior surface 161I of band 161. In some embodiments, fastener 162 comprises a patch of hook material, while at least a portion of interior surface 161I comprises a complementary surface of loop material to which fastener 162 attaches. A user may adjust armband 160 by passing first loose end 161-1 through buckle 163 and pressing fastener 162 against interior surface 161I to secure armband 160 at a particular circumference.
[0200] FIG. 15A is a flowchart of a method 170 of acquiring and processing an actuation record set 172C-2 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 15B is a flowchart of a method of recording actuation records 172C-1 to obtain actuation record set 172C-2 in method 170 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 15C is a schematic of actuation record 172C-1 according to an example embodiment. FIG. 15D is a flowchart of a method of processing actuation record set 172C-2 to obtain a certified actuation record set 176D-1 in method 170. FIG. 15E is a schematic depiction of a system 180 for carrying out method 170.
[0201] Referring to FIG. 15A, method 170 begins at step 172 comprising recording or logging actuation records 172C-1 seen in FIG. 15B into memory of personal dispensing apparatus 20.1 to obtain actuation record set 172C-2. As shown in FIG. 15C, each actuation record 172C-1 may comprise a log or measurement of one or more elements relating to apparatus 20.1 and / or actuator 42 thereof seen in FIG. 6. In some embodiments each actuation record 172C-1 comprises one or more of a log or measurement of: time(s) of actuation 172B-1 of the actuator obtained via internal clock 182-3 (seen in FIG. 15E); volume(s) of fluid dispensed 172B-2 from the actuator; and / or a user identifier 172B-3. In some embodiments, user identifier 172B-3 is a device identifier (e.g., a unique serial number associated with apparatus 20.1) that is associated with user 181 in a separately maintained database by organization 185 seen in FIG. 15E.
[0202] Referring back to FIG. 15A, the method next includes at step 174 receiving actuation record set 172C-2 at local device 183 via hardwired connection 182-4 seen in FIG. 15E. Referring back to FIG. 15A, the method next includes at step 176 processing actuation record set 172C-2 to obtain certified actuation record set 172D-1.
[0203] FIG. 15B is a flowchart of a method 172 of recording actuation records 172C-1 to obtain actuation record set 172C-2 according to an example embodiment. Method 172 may be performed by a suitably configured processor 182-1 in apparatus 20.1. Method 172 begins at step 172A comprising placing processor 182-1 in a low power sleep state and / or configuring the processor to enter the same. The low power sleep state conserves power from a power source (e.g., power source 40.1).
[0204] The method next includes detecting via processor 182-1 an actuation of a dispensing mechanism by user 181 (e.g., upon actuation of actuator 42.1 to release fluid from apparatus 20.1), with the processor transitioning from the low power sleep state thereof in step 172A to an active state. The method at step 172B may thus be said to comprise configuring processor 182-1 to transition from the low power sleep state to said active state upon detecting one or more actuations of the actuator. In addition or alternatively, the method at step 172B may thus be said to comprise configuring processor 182-1 to wake-up upon receiving one or more signals indicative of actuation of the actuator and / or upon receiving one or more actuation signals. Step 172B may further including detecting via processor 182-1 one or more features about the actuation. In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 15B, the one or more features include a time 172B-1 of actuation obtained via internal clock 182-3, and a volume of fluid dispensed 172B-2.
[0205] In some embodiments, the method includes only recording via processor 182-1 actuation record 172C-1 if a configurable and / or predetermined and / or minimum threshold volume of fluid is dispensed. The method may include monitoring via processor 182-1 the dispensing mechanism of apparatus 20.1 to assess whether a dispensing mechanism operation cycle corresponding to the configurable volume has completed. The method may thus include, for example, configuring processor 182-1 to refrain from recording or logging an actuation record 172C-1 in step 172 where the dispensing mechanism operation cycle was interrupted and / or determined to be interrupted. By way of example, in embodiments where the fluid being dispensed by apparatus 20.1 is hand sanitizer, a hygienically effective volume of hand sanitizer may be 2 mL (in this example, the configurable volume of fluid). If it is known that actuator 42.1 must operate for at least 1 second to dispense 2 mL of hand sanitizer, then the dispensing mechanism operation cycle is 1 second long. Consequently, in some embodiments, processor 182-1 may only record actuation record 172C-1 upon detecting that actuator 42.1 has run for at least 1 second. In some embodiments, processor 182-1 may only record actuation record 172C-1 upon detecting that actuator 42.1 has run for at least 1.5 seconds. Thus, step 172 may include refraining from recording or logging the actuator record: i) upon determining via processor 182-1 that an actuation time is less than a predetermined minimum threshold and / or time and / or 1 or 1.5 seconds; and / or upon determining via processor 182-1 that a volume of fluid dispensed 172B-2 for a given actuation of the actuator is less than a predetermined minimum threshold and / or volume and / or 2 mL.
[0206] The method includes at step 172C, adding via processor 182-1 actuation record 172C-1 to actuation record set 172C-2 stored in local memory 182-2 of apparatus 20.1.
[0207] Upon completion of step 172C, the method includes placing processor 182-1 in a low power sleep state once more and / or configuring processor 182-1 to enter a low power sleep state anew. Steps 172A to 172C may be repeated a plurality of times (e.g., over the course of a shift of a healthcare worker) to provide a plurality of actuation records 172-1 in actuation record set 172C-2.
[0208] Referring back to FIG. 15A, after one or more actuation records 172C-1 have been recorded in step 172, method 170 may proceed to step 174, wherein the actuation record set 172C-2 is received by local device 183. In some embodiments, step 174 is initiated by user 181 physically coupling personal dispensing apparatus 20.1 to local device 183. In the example embodiment shown in FIG. 15E, this is accomplished via, hardwired connection 182-4. In some embodiments, hardwired connection 182-4 is established by connecting a USB-C cable between a suitable port on apparatus 20.1 (e.g., recharging interface 41) and a suitable port on local device 183.
[0209] Upon establishing the physical coupling, processor 182-1 of apparatus 20.1 may detect the connection and transmit the actuation record set 172C-2 from local memory 182-2, through hardwired connection 182-4, to local device 183, where it may be stored in local memory 183-2. In some embodiments, device 183 may be a Raspberry Pi™, or another suitable computing device.
[0210] In some embodiments, local device 183 is coupleable to a plurality of apparatus 20.1 via separate hardwired connections 182-4 at once. By way of example, local device may be couplable via hardwired connections 182-4 to between 1 and 50 apparatus 20.1 at once.
[0211] FIG. 15D is a flowchart of a method 176 for processing actuation record set 172C-2 according to an example embodiment, which corresponds to step 176 in method 170 of FIG. 15A. Method 176 may be performed by processor 183-1 of local device 183 after the transmission of actuation record set 172C-2 in step 174.
[0212] Because dispensing apparatus 20.1 lacks wireless connectivity, internal clock 182-3 cannot continuously synchronize with an authoritative external time source during use. The inability to continuously synchronize may lead to gradual deviation (also known as “clock drift”) during use of apparatus 20.1, causing actuation times associated with actuation records 172C-1 to become inaccurate.
[0213] Method 176 begins at step 176A comprising receiving via processor 183-1 of local device 183 dispenser time 176A-1. Dispenser time 176A-1 corresponds to a current time as reported by internal clock 182-3 of apparatus 20.1.
[0214] Step 176B comprises determining a time offset 176B-2 between dispenser time 176A-1 and a concurrently obtained authoritative time 176B-1 from authoritative time source 183-3. In some embodiments, authoritative time source 183-3 comprises a network-synchronized time source. Time offset 176B-2 may be calculated by taking the difference between authoritative time 176B-1 and dispenser time 176A-1. By way of example, if the difference between authoritative time 176B-1 and dispenser time 176A-1 is positive, this indicates that the time reported by internal clock 182-3 of apparatus 20.1 is behind authoritative time 176B-1. A positive time offset 176B-2 would then need to be applied to actuation record set 172C-2 to adjust actuation times 172B-1 of each actuation record 172C-1. By way of further example, if the difference between authoritative time 176B-1 and dispenser time 176A-1 is negative, this indicates that the time reported by internal clock 182-3 is ahead of authoritative time 176B-1. A negative time offset 176B-2 would then need to be applied to actuation record set 172C-2 to adjust actuation times 172B-1 of each actuation record 172C-1.
[0215] Step 176C comprises applying time offset 176B-2 to actuation times 172B-1 in each actuation record 172C-1 in actuation record set 172C-2 to obtain certified actuation record set 176D-1. Certified actuation record set 176D-1 may represent a more accurate record of dispensing events associated with apparatus 20.1.
[0216] In some embodiments, the method may include analyzing via processor 183.1 of local device 183 actuation record set 172C-2 to identify large temporal gaps between actuations, which may indicate periods of device inactivity or power loss. The method may include configuring processor 183-1 to omit actuation records 172C-1 which comprise and / or are determined to comprise temporal gaps which exceed a predetermined threshold, as they may be erroneously created entries (e.g., due to power fluctuations or the like).
[0217] In some embodiments, the method may include transmitting certified actuation record set 176D-1 from local device 183 to centralized server 184 for analysis by organization 185.
[0218] By way of example, a healthcare worker, such as a nurse, may use apparatus 20.1 throughout their shift, generating an actuation record set 172C-2 stored in local memory 182-2. Over the course of the day, the internal clock 182-3 of apparatus 20.1 may drift and become, for example, 45 seconds slower relative to the hospital's network time or network protocol time (in this example, authoritative time source 183-3). At the end of the shift, the nurse physically couples apparatus 20.1 to local device 183, such as a docking station or hub at a hospital, to transmit actuation record set 172C-2.
[0219] Upon establishing the connection, local device 183 compares current time 176A-1 from the internal clock 182-3 with authoritative time 176B-1 from authoritative time source 183-3 and determines a time offset 176B-2 of-45 seconds. The local device's processor 183-1 then applies this −45 second correction to every preliminary timestamp in actuation record set 172C-2 received from apparatus 20.1. An actuation that was locally recorded at 14:30:00 on apparatus 20.1 is thus verified as having instead occurred at 14:29:15. This generates a certified actuation record set 176D-1, which provides a more accurate record to prove to organization 185 (e.g., a hospital) that, for example, a nurse sanitized their hands using apparatus 20.1 after finishing their break and before returning to care for patients. Such records may be subsequently correlated to specific actions taken by the person for quality control and / or regulatory compliance purposes or the like.
[0220] As mentioned above, in some embodiments actuator 42 is configured dispense or meter out a dosage generally or substantially in conformity with WHO and / or CDC mandated dosage protocols. The exact CDC required dosage is dispensed thereby creating an actual loggable health regulated protocol of sanitation including time and date and serial number of device and dispersing the required health protocols, Apparatus 20.1 as herein described may thus at the point of contact provide proof that a user or clinician is adhering to point of contact mandates set forth in various health acts or standards, such as, in one non-limiting example, the CSA Z317.12:25 Canadian standard entitled “Cleaning and disinfecting of health care facilities”. Under the CSA Z317.12:25 update, the “Point of Care” mandate requires that the dispensing volume be auditable and the apparatuses as herein described may provide such functionality. Apparatus 20.1 as herein described provides an actuator or pump which outputs liquid at a pressure of 8 to 14 PSI in one non-limiting embodiment and 10 PSI in a further non-limiting embodiment and this, together with check valve 140, may result in fluid being dispensed by the apparatus with a variance of between 1.2 ml and 1.5 ml in one non-limiting embodiment. The latter may be much tighter than traditional pump-action units of the known prior art and may comprise a standard operating delivery amount. Apparatus 20.1 as herein described may thus provide the data needed for “Validated Clean hands” mandates. In addition, apparatuses 20 / 20.1 as herein described may further be manufactured in compliance with and / or taking into account International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 10993-10.Interpretation of Terms

[0379] Examples of wearable personal dispensing apparatuses have been described and the following paragraphs are offered as yet a further description. The system / method as herein described may be referred to as a closed-loop hardwired ecosystem. The system / method comprises a physical handshake via a secure physical interface gate (e.g. via USB-C in one non-limiting example), with data only moving from dispensing apparatus 20 when physically docked. The system / method may comprise ethernet and / or be hardwired, thus providing a secure, shielded data transfer to the facility's server. The system / method as herein described is thus air-gapped. No Wi-Fi™, Bluetooth®, or any wireless protocols are used for data transfer from dispensing apparatus 20.
[0380] The technical “handshake” may thus comprise two physical stages: i) device-to-hub—the wearable device connects to a local hub such as via a multi-purpose USB-C port (handling both charging and the data “handshake”), and ii) hub-to-server-the hub (which may utilize a Raspberry Pi™ or similar microprocessor) then offloads that data to the facility's secure server via a Hardwired Ethernet Cable. The system / method as herein described may result in: superior security-immune to signal hacking or interception; zero interference, thus avoiding clutter of hospital Wi-Fi™ bands which may be critical for medical-grade EMC compliance; and a guaranteed audit trail-data cannot be “dropped”
[0381] due to a poor wireless signal, with the handshake only occurring when the physical connection is confirmed. The system / method as herein described may thus be referred to and / or comprise a deterministic event logger using deterministic tracking, as the data only exists because the physical engagement interface or button was pushed.
[0382] The microprocessor may use a “wake-on-interrupt” protocol—it stays in a state of near-zero power consumption until the mechanical depression of the dosing button closes a circuit. Dispensing apparatus 20 may include an onboard real-time clock (RTC), where at the millisecond the button is depressed, the microprocessor pulls the exact date and time and writes it to non-volatile memory. The onboard event logging may occur as follows: i) direct actuation trigger—the logging event is initiated via a mechanical-to-electronic interrupt (the dosing button), which ‘fully awakens’ the microprocessor from a deep-sleep state; ii) onboard temporal Attribution—dispensing apparatus 20 performs a local write of the Date and Time to a non-volatile ledger at the moment of actuation, iii) serial number marriage—dispensing apparatus 20 is tied to the user via a hard-coded serial number that is manually associated with the user's identity in the administrative database (manual marriage), eliminating the need for unreliable wireless ID tracking; iv) network independence-the microprocessor does not attempt to broadcast this data and, rather, stores the log locally until a physical handshake (e.g. USB-C) is established for data offload. The system / method as herein described may thus be referred to as an autonomous, hardwired event-logger which is self-authenticating and includes:1. Deep-Sleep “Wake-on-Interrupt” LogicThe Hardware: The onboard microprocessor is “barely awake” (Deep Sleep) to maximize battery longevity. It is not a parasitic energy-harvesting system; it is a dedicated, event-triggered active node.
[0384] The Trigger: The device fully awakens only when the mechanical dosing button is depressed. This mechanical-to-logic interrupt ensures power is only drawn during
[0385] the clinical event.
[0386] Dispensing apparatus 20 utilizes a Wake-on-Interrupt Deep Sleep protocol. The microprocessor is electrically “dead” (consuming near-zero current) until the physical kinetic energy of the dosing cycle closes the circuit to “reanimate” the logic. This enables the 500-1,000 dose clinical duty cycle and may result in a dispensing apparatus that for weeks of shifts.2. Deterministic Temporal LoggingThe Data: Upon actuation, the microprocessor pulls the exact Date and Time from an onboard Real-Time Clock (RTC) and performs a local write to a non-volatile ledger.
[0388] Dispensing apparatus 20 provides at-the-source temporal attribution, ensuring 100% data integrity regardless of network status.
[0389] Dispensing apparatus 20 uses asynchronous NTP (Network Time Protocol) Scrubbing. During the physical handshake, the secure physical interface gate (e.g. Raspberry Pi gateway) validates the wearable's local RTC logs against global atomic stratum servers. This provides forensic accuracy-even if the hospital computer is wrong, the hub “scrubs” and corrects the data to ensure absolute legal certainty for Bill S-5 audits.3. Hardwired “Air-Gapped” SecurityZero Wireless Footprint: The device has no Wi-Fi™, Bluetooth®, or RFID broadcasting capabilities. It is invisible to hospital wireless networks, eliminating interference and security breaches.
[0391] Physical Handshake: Data offload occurs exclusively via a multi-purpose USB-C port. This port handles both high-speed “Burst” data synchronization and charging. The device connects to a local gateway (e.g., a Raspberry Pi-based hub) which then offloads via hardwired Ethernet.
[0392] Dispensing apparatus 20 physically removes the radio, comprising “air-gapped vault” with zero-RF footprint. Data movement is restricted to a Physical Handshake via a multi-purpose USB-C port. This eliminates the two biggest hurdles in modern healthcare: cybersecurity breaches and RF interference with sensitive ICU / ER equipment (like pacemakers or ventilators).4. Clinical Calibration (the Single-Dose Spec)Efficacy: The device is mechanically calibrated to deliver a single, clinically sufficient dose per actuation for total hand coverage.
[0394] The Performance Metric: Because the power load is event-driven, the device is rated for 500 to 1,000 discrete dispensations per charge. At a spec of 40 doses (one cartridge) per clinician shift, the maintenance / handshake window is reliably predictable (12 to 25 shifts).
[0395] The microprocessor is calibrated to only commit a log to the non-volatile vault if a full mechanical displacement occurs (representing a clinically sufficient dose). This transforms the device from a “counter” into a Validated Clinical Instrument. It proves 100% hand coverage efficacy per log, rather than just “button pushes.”5. Manual Identity MarriageVerification: To eliminate the unreliability of wireless user-tracking, each device's unique Serial Number is manually associated with the user's ID in the administrative database. This 1:1 hardware-to-human link is foolproof for legal / clinical audits.
[0397] Manual Serial-Number Marriage - dispensing apparatus 20 is physically associated with a specific user ID in the administrative ledger. Wireless ID tracking is notorious for “cross-talk” (assigning a dose to the wrong person standing nearby).
[0398] The system / method as herein described may ensure 100% deterministic attribution—the data is legally tied to the person holding the hardware. The system / method as herein described may thus comprise a vault with a security gate, where the data logging happens in a hardware-Isolated environment (no wireless radios) and can only be accessed via a physical handshake (USB-C). In 2026, hospital IT directors may not allow wireless “data sharing” because of ransomware risks. The system / method as herein described is not merely data sharing, but may be said to comprise a secure transfer protocol that protects the hospital's core infrastructure from outside interference.
[0399] For the asynchronous validation step (e.g. performed by the Raspberry Pi hub), the “logging event” is not finished when the wearable writes the file; it is only complete once the hub scrubs the data, validates the NTP (Network Time Protocol) timestamp, and
[0400] converts it into a medical-grade packet (HL7 / FHIR). This methodology produces forensic evidence that can be used for Bill S-5 federal compliance audits. The system / method as herein described may thus result in verified clinical events.
[0401] The microprocessor rejects the log entry unless the physical plunger travels 100% of its calibrated distance, logging a successful hand hygiene application, which may be said to comprise a legal compliance record.
[0402] The system / method thus provides:
[0403] 1. Hardware Isolation-Removing the Risk of Wireless Data Exfiltration.
[0404] 2. Temporal Validation-using a local hub to ‘scrub’ and certify timestamps against atomic time.
[0405] 3. Mechanical verification-requiring a physical-logic handshake before a log is authorized.
[0406] The Raspberry Pi Hub may be referred to as a trusted execution environment comprising a physical security gate. The port of dispensing apparatus 20 may function as a dual-purpose handshake interface: 1) it transfers data; and 2) it is the exclusive physical key required to unlock the data vault. By removing all wireless radios, dispensing apparatus 20 has turned the port into the sole point of vulnerability control. The data sharing event is not “plug and play”: it requires a hardware-to-hardware authentication between the wearable and the Raspberry Pi Hub. The Raspberry Pi acts as a “Trusted Execution Environment” (TEE): it does not just receive data; it scrubs and validates the logs against NTP (Network Time Protocol) before the port allows the data to move. The port may be said to comprise a physical interface that is electronically isolated from the non-volatile memory (the vault) until a specific cryptographic handshake is completed.
[0407] It is therefore intended that the following appended claims and claims hereafter introduced are interpreted to include all such modifications, permutations, additions, omissions, and sub-combinations as may reasonably be inferred. The scope of the claims should not be limited by the preferred embodiments set forth in the examples, but should be given the broadest interpretation consistent with the description as a whole.
