Abstract

An outsole for an article of footwear can include ribs and nubs to provide traction. Each rib is spaced apart from an adjacent rib and includes a first side segment disposed on a lateral side portion, a second side segment disposed on a medial side portion, a first angled segment, and a second angled segment. The first angled segment extends from first side segment, the second angled segment extends from the second side segment, and the first and second angled segments form a peak directed towards an anterior end of the outsole. Each nub is disposed between two adjacent ribs of the plurality of ribs. The nubs include side nubs and intermediate nubs. The side nubs are disposed between pairs of side segments of the ribs. The intermediate nubs are disposed between pairs of the angled segments of the ribs.

The sole structure may include an outsole that is adapted to contact the ground. The sole structure is configured for supporting the wearer’s foot and providing cushioning between the wearer’s foot and the ground (e.g., the surface on which they are moving, walking, running, etc.). The upper is coupled to the sole structure and forms a foot-receiving cavity. The upper is configured for securing the wearer’s foot to the sole structure and / or can protect the wearer’s foot.

[0028] In use, a wearer’s foot may move in different directions and change orientation relative to the ground, thereby changing which surfaces of the article of footwear have contact with the ground during use. For example, the sole structure may comprise an outsole that has an inferior side portion, lateral side portion, medial side portion, and an intermediate portion. Abrupt stops can exert relatively high forces on the intermediate portion of the outsole, particularly the forefoot region. Accordingly, the traction surfaces of the medial side portion, lateral side portion, and / or intermediate portion of the outsole can be configured to improve the wearer’s ability to perform specific movements and performance.

[0041] FIGS. 1-3 show an article of footwear 100, according to one example. The article of footwear 100 comprises two main components: a sole structure 102 and an upper 104. The upper 104 is coupled to the sole structure 102. The sole structure 102 includes an outsole 106 and a midsole 108. As further described below in connection with FIGS. 4-8, the outsole 106 can be configured with a plurality of traction surfaces and can be configured to cover and / or protect at least a portion of the midsole 108 and / or the upper 104. The midsole 108 can be disposed between the upper 104 and the outsole 106 and can be configured to provide cushioning. The upper 104 can be coupled to the midsole (e.g., at a strobel).
