FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present disclosure, in some embodiments, relates to a tool belt for use with a safety harness system to be worn by a worker operating at potentially harmful or deadly heights.BACKGROUND
[0002] Fall protection equipment, including safety harnesses, are one aspect of safety equipment utilized by workers who are operating at potentially harmful or deadly heights. In addition to providing peace of mind to workers, properly worn fall protection equipment ensures that when a worker falls from an elevated position, their body is stopped prior to contact with the ground or any other objects below. Typical safety harnesses are worn around the body of workers, and are connected to various support structures depending on the specific work being performed. Various equipment is often utilized to connect the safety harness to the support structure.
[0003] In addition to the safety harness, often workers will wear a tool belt when working at elevated heights. A tool belt, typically worn around the waist of a worker, is used to hold tools and equipment so that a worker does not need to descend to ground level each time a new tool or piece of equipment is required.
[0004] Generally, tool belts are worn by a variety of workers including but not limited to construction workers, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, roofers, installers, and yard care workers. Depending on the type of work being completed, a tool belt may be used to hold items such as nails and screws, handheld tools, battery packs, light bulbs, measuring tapes, and other various equipment.
[0005] In most use scenarios, a tool belt is used to securely hold the necessary equipment for a worker, while still allowing the worker to quickly and easily access the necessary equipment. A traditional tool belt accomplishes these purposes using two main components, a tool belt portion and a pouch portion.
[0006] The pouch portion is the part of the tool belt system which houses the tools. Traditional tool belt pouches may include one or more storage pouches, attachment points for tools and other small equipment to hang from, and dividers to keep sections of the pouches separate. Typically, a tool pouch will be worn so that it rests on or around the waist or hip sections of a worker. In this location, the weight and size of the pouch will not impede the worker's ability to walk, and the pouch will remain located where the workers hands will naturally rest. This allows for easy access when switching tools or grabbing additional equipment during installation tasks. When fully loaded, a tool belt may weigh upwards of 30 pounds depending on its contents.
[0007] Traditional tool pouches may also include an attachment portion which securely attaches the tool pouch to the tool belt. Usually, the tool belt is worn around the waist of a worker, and is of sufficient rigidity to hold the weight of tool pouches and tools. In order to attach a tool pouch to the tool belt, various connection mechanisms may be utilized including for example, belt loops and Velcro, or more permanent options such as sewing.
[0008] Various tool belts are also available. In most cases, workers will simply use the same belt that holds their pants up to attach their tool pouch. In this case, the worker will simply feed their pant belt through a set of belt loops on a tool pouch before buckling their pant belt. This system has the benefit of simplicity being that one belt is multi-purposed to hold both the tool belt and their pants in place. However, there are drawbacks to using a normal pant belt for a tool pouch. First, the use of a pant belt to hold a tool pouch will cause increased wear and tear on a traditional pant belt. These belts are often made from materials that can wear out quickly under the weight and friction of a tool pouch full of heavy tools. Leather or fabric belts may stretch, tear, or lose their shape, and the buckles and fasteners on traditional belts are usually not designed to handle the weight of a tool pouch, thereby increasing the risk of potential breakage or failure. Likewise, traditional pant belts are not designed to support the weight and bulk of a tool pouch, which can lead to discomfort, fatigue and pain, especially when worn for long periods. Similarly, traditional pant belts typically will not distribute the weight of tools evenly around the waist, thereby causing increased strain on the hips and lower back of the wearer. Further, the use of a traditional pant belt to hold a tool pouch requires that the wearer unbuckle their pant belt and partially remove the belt before feeding the belt back through their tool pouch and re-buckling, making tasks such as using the restroom unduly complicated and time consuming.
[0009] To address some of these issues, various tool belt systems will utilize a separate tool belt with the sole purpose of supporting a tool pouch. This type of belt is typically worn over the pants belt, and may be manufactured with heavier materials more suitable to withstand the additional forces resulting from the weight and use of a tool pouch. However, these overbelts also have certain limitations. For example, a wearer must be conscientious about the order they put their overbelt on because the overbelt must be installed over the safety harness in order to ensure that the safety harness can maintain the necessary contact with the wearer. Likewise, in order to remove the harness, the wearer must first remove the tool belt. Further, the layering of multiple belts may cause increased discomfort and fatigue, or may cause the safety harness to become intertwined with the overbelt.
[0010] Another issue common to all existing tool belt systems is their lack of compatibility with lower back support system of comfort harnesses. Harnesses designed for optimal comfort will often have a lower back support pad which is designed to redistribute a portion of the weight of a harness system, including additional safety equipment such as the self-retracting lifeline mechanism from the upper dorsal region down into the lower torso region of the wearer. Typically in these systems, a single web belt is used to hold both the comfort pad in position and to hold the tool bags in place. The primary drawback to this configuration is that to attach and detach tool pouches, the entire belt must be unbuckled and disconnected from the supporting structure.BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONS
[0011] The present invention addresses many of the challenges with existing tool belt systems by introducing a tool belt designed to be integrated directly into a safety harness system. The disclosed tool belt addresses the problems typically associated with existing toolbelts by incorporating features which allow the tool belt to be attached onto the lower back pad of a safety harness system. While attached to the lower back pad of the safety harness, the presently disclosed tool belt remains a sperate and distinct apparatus from the safety harness and its associated safety straps.
[0012] In view of the issues faced by wearers of existing tool belt systems there is a need for a more user-friendly and secure tool belt attachment and detachment system. The need for an improved tool belt has become increasingly evident as the demand for more ergonomic and user-friendly safety equipment grows. An improved tool belt would not only facilitate easier and quicker attachment and detachment of tool pouches and other safety equipment, but would also ensure that the harness remains securely fastened under various conditions and loads.

[0014] Embodiments of the present invention disclosures present a tool belt that attaches to the lower back pad of a safety harness using a combination of belt loops and quick release snaps. In certain embodiments, the use of one or more quick release snaps allows the wearer to loosen the tool belt in order to quickly add and remove various tool pouches or tool attachments. By attaching a separate tool belt on top of the lower back pad of the safety harness, loosening the tool belt for the addition and removal of tool pouches does not compromise the safety of the harness system. As a result, wearers of the presently disclosed tool belt can quickly and easily add or remove tool pouches without having to loosen or adjust the fit of their safety harness.
[0015] In addition, because the presently disclosed tool belt is attached over the lower back pad of the safety harness and secured to the safety pad using a combination of belt loops and quick release snaps, the tool belt does not need to wrap fully around the body, and in some embodiments may terminate on the hips of the wearer. Multiple advantages may be provided by this configuration. Particularly, the use of a shorter tool belt may improve comfort for the wearer, and further increases safety by eliminating bulky belt buckles at the naval region of the wearer. Further, use of a shorter tool belt and the elimination of a belt buckle may help reduce the likelihood of inadvertently catching the belt or belt buckle on objects while the wearer is ascending and descending to elevated working positions, particularly on ladders and other climbing apparatuses.

[0032] According to some embodiments, a tool belt apparatus for use with a safety harness is presented. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present disclosure. It will be evident, however, to one skilled in the art that the present disclosure may be practiced without these specific details. The present disclosure is to be considered as one or more examples only and is not intended to limit the disclosure to the specific embodiments illustrated by the figures or description below.
[0033] Referring now to FIG. 1, a perspective view of a tool belt system according to one embodiment is presented. In some embodiments, the tool belt system may be designed to be affixed to a lower back pad 100 of a safety harness. The tool belt system may contain a support belt 101, one or more belt loop fasteners 200, and one or more quick-release fasteners 300.
[0034] Turning now to FIG. 2, an exploded view of the presently disclosed tool belt system according to one embodiment is shown. According to some embodiments, the support belt 101 may be attached to the lower back pad 100 using one belt loop fasteners 200, which may be permanently affixed to the lower back pad 100 as shown in FIG. 1. In order to keep the support belt 101 in place relative to the lower back pad 100, some embodiments of the present application may utilize one or more quick-release fasteners 300 which may prevent the support belt 101 from shifting relative to the lower back pad 100, and may help provide additional integrity to the support belt 101 to help displace the weight of various attached equipment.
[0035] Referring now to FIG. 3, a perspective view of the support belt 101, according to one embodiment, is disclosed. In some embodiments, the support belt 101 may be comprised of a single piece of material of sufficient length to extend across the lower back of a wearer's body. In other embodiments, the support belt 101 may be comprised of multiple pieces of material bound together for increased strength and / or pliability. The support belt 101 may contain one or more port holes 102 or molded buckle tongues which are where the quick-release fasteners 300 may attach to the support belt 101 as described in more detail below. In some embodiments, the support belt 101 may also contain reflective material in order to enhance visibility of the wearer in low-light or nighttime conditions.
[0036] Turning now to FIGS. 4A, 4B, and 4C, perspective, side, and top views of the presently disclosed belt loop fastener 200, respectively, according to some embodiments are disclosed. The belt loop fastener 200 may contain a backer 201 and a belt loop cover 202. In some embodiments, the backer 201 is the portion of the belt loop fastener 200 which may be permanently affixed to the lower back pad 100, and the belt loop cover 202 may be the portion of the belt loop fastener 200 that which the support belt 101 is inserted through. Because the backer 201 may be permanently affixed to the lower back pad 100 of the safety harness, the belt loop fastener 200 provides the necessary support for the weight of the support belt 101 and any attachments by distributing the weight from the support belt 101 to the lower back pad 100. The method in which the belt loop fastener 200 is attached to the lower back pad 100 may be of any manner, and various attachment methods are contemplated by the present disclosure including but not limited to glue, stitching, bolts, fasteners, and Velcro. More importantly, the use of a backer 201 and a belt loop cover 202 may allow for the support belt 101 to be inserted through the belt loop fastener 200, but may not provide (in some embodiments) any means for locking the support belt 101 into position relative to the lower back pad 100 of the safety harness.
[0037] In order to secure the support belt 101 in position relative to the lower back pad 100 of the safety harness and to allow for rapid attachment and detachment of tool pouches and other miscellaneous equipment, the presently disclosed tool belt system may incorporate the use of one or more quick-release fasteners 300.
[0038] FIG. 5 illustrates a perspective view of the quick-release fastener 300 in the engaged configuration according to one embodiment. In certain embodiments, the quick-release fastener 300 may be comprised of a base plate 301, stud 302, a security cap 303, and a security collar 304. The quick-release fasteners 300, like the belt loop fasteners 200, may be permanently affixed to the lower back pad 100. In some embodiments, the attachment point for the quick-release fastener 300 to the lower back pad 100 may be the base plate 301. The method in which the base plate 301 attaches to the lower back pad 100 may be in any manner, and various attachment methods are contemplated with this disclosure including but not limited to glue, stitching, bolts, fasteners, and Velcro. According to some embodiments, the base plate 301 may be formed from a rigid material that provides structural support, while possessing sufficient flexibility to conform comfortably to the contours of a wearer's back.
[0039] Turning now to FIG. 6, a front view of the base plate 301 and the stud 302 according to one embodiment is presented. In certain embodiments, the quick-release fastener 300 may be comprised of a stud 302 which may be permanently attached to the base plate 301, extending outwardly and terminating at the stud end 305. According to some embodiments, the stud end 305 may be generally spherical in shape. The stud 302, according to some embodiments, may have a generally uniform radius, and may extend outwardly from the base plate 301 at varying lengths and terminating with the stud end 305. According to some embodiments, the stud 302 is attached to the base plate 301 so that the stud 302 extends outwardly and generally perpendicularly to the base plate 301.

According to some embodiments, the security cap 303 may contain a side button 306, and a top button 307. According to some embodiments, removal of the security cap 303 from the stud 302 requires sequential actuation of the side button 306 and the top button 307, wherein the side button 306 must be actuated before the top button 307.
[0041] As depicted in FIG. 7B, the side button 306 may contain one or more slide springs 308. In some embodiments, the slide springs 308 bias the side button 306 toward a default, outwardly-extended position and resist inward movement of the side button 306 unless a user applies a sufficient actuating inward force. Upon release of the side button 306, the slide springs 308 may automatically return the side button 306 to the extended position, thereby preventing inadvertent or removal of the security cap 303.

The two-step process may meet one or more safety or security requirements by reducing the likelihood of accidental or unintended removal. Requiring sequential actuation of multiple buttons helps prevent inadvertent release due to incidental contact or vibration and ensures removal occurs only upon deliberate user action.

FIG. 8B depicts a sectional view of the security cap 303 attached to the stud 302. In the locked configuration, shown in FIG. 8B, the one or more ball bearings 311 may be held in position vertically by the bearing housing 312 and laterally by a lower edge 316 of the top button 307. As the security cap 303 is removed from the stud 302, the spring sleeve 310 may shift downward as a result of the downward force from the bearing spring 309. In some embodiments, the spring sleeve 310 may shift downward a sufficient distance to block the one or more ball bearings 311 into the one or more bearing pockets 315. As a result, the amount of force needed for reattachment of the security cap 303 to the stud 302 may be reduced because the one or more ball bearings 311 do not initially contact the top of the stud end 305 upon reattachment of the security cap 303. According to some embodiments, the diameter of the portion of the bearing housing 312 that the one or more ball bearings 311 extend partially through is less than the diameter of the one or more ball bearings 311. As a result, the one or more ball bearings 311 may extend partially through the bearing housing 312, but are contained within the bearing housing 312 and are prevented from passing fully through the bearing housing 312 by a retaining lip or reduced-diameter portion of the bearing housing 312.
[0048] In some embodiments, reattachment of the security cap 303 to the stud 302 does not require actuation of the side button 306 or the top button 307. Instead, the security cap 303 may be reattached by pressing the security cap 303 downward onto the stud 302 with sufficient force to overcome the downward biasing force of the bearing spring 309. [0051] As shown in FIG. 9, the support belt 101 of the presently disclosed tool belt system may be designed to attach atop the lower back pad 100 of a safety harness. In certain embodiments, the support belt 101 may extend approximately from one hip, around the lower back of the wearer, and terminate at the other hip. Despite the presently disclosed tool belt system attaching to the lower back pad 100 of the harness, the tool belt system may be an entirely distinct piece of equipment from the safety harness. Because the tool belt system may be separate from the safety harness, the presently disclosed tool belt system allows an operator to add or remove tool pouches or other tool accessories from support belt 101 without removing, loosening, or even adjusting the safety harness.
[0052] FIG. 10 demonstrates how, in some embodiments, the support belt 101 may be disconnected from the lower back pad 100 on one or more sides to add or remove tool pouches or other equipment. In some embodiments, the stud 302 may be inserted first through the back pad 100 so that only the stud 302 is exposed while the rest of the quick-release fastener 300, including the base plate 301 remains behind the back pad 100.
[0053] As described previously, and shown in FIG. 3, the support belt 101 may contain one or more port holes 102 with a diameter sufficient to accept the diameter of the one or more studs 302. In some embodiments, the stud 302 is inserted through the port hole 102 such that a majority of the length of the stud 302 is exposed. With the stud 302 exposed, the security cap 303 may be placed atop the stud 302 and pressed downward onto the stud 302 with sufficient force to overcome the downward force of the bearing spring 309 until the ball bearings 311 reengage with the stud end 305. As the security cap 303 is pressed down and the ball bearings 311 reengage the stud end 305, the security cap 303 pinches the support belt 101 between the security cap 303 and back pad material 100 which is supported by the base plate 301. The pinching action of the quick-release fasteners 300 occurs on both ends of the support belt 101, and simultaneously keeps the support belt 101 in place relative to the rest of the tool belt system, while also facilitating rapid attachment and detachment of the support belt 101 for adding tool pouches or other equipment. Turning back to FIG. 10, once the security cap 303 is removed and a portion of the stud 302 is exposed, the wearer may pull one end of the support belt 101 off the stud 302. As this occurs, the security cap 303 may remain attached to the lower back pad 100 via the safety collar 304. According to some embodiments, with one end of the support belt 101 removed from the quick-release fastener 300, the rest of the support belt 101 may remain attached to the lower back pad 100 via the belt loop fasteners 200 and the other quick-release fastener 300. The wearer may then insert the disconnected end of the support belt 101 through a tool pouch or other tool attachment equipment before pressing the disconnected end of the support belt 101 back onto the stud 302 of the quick-release fastener 300 and reengaging the security cap 303 with the stud 302.
[0054] As shown in FIG. 11, there may be various arrangements of equipment 103 that can be worn on the support belt 101. For example, the wearer could have a tool pouch on one side and tool attachments on the other. Likewise, the wearer may decide to wear a tool pouch on both sides, or tool attachments on both sides. Because the support belt 101 is attached to the lower back pad 100 at multiple points, the wearer also has the option of wearing a single tool pouch or tool attachment on one side of the tool belt system and nothing on the other. Other arrangements of equipment 103 may also be contemplated with the present disclosure.

Claims
1. A tool belt system for use with a safety harness system comprising:a support belt;one or more quick-release fasteners;one or more belt loop fasteners;wherein the one or more belt loop fasteners and one or more quick-release fasteners are affixed to the lower back pad of the safety harness;wherein the support belt is affixed to the lower back pad of the safety harness by the one or more belt loop fasteners and held in place relative to the lower back pad of the safety harness using the one or more quick-release fasteners;wherein both a first end and second end of the support belt is configured to be removable from the lower back pad of the safety harness; andwherein the tool belt system is configured so that one or more tool pouches are added to the support belt by unfastening one of the quick-release fasteners, attaching the tool pouch to the support belt, then refastening the support belt using the quick-release fasteners.
2. The tool belt system of claim 1 wherein the support belt is comprised of one or more layers of leather, nylon, polyester, canvas, rubber, ribbon, webbing, composite plastics, or metallic materials.
3. The tool belt system of claim 1 wherein the support belt contains one or more holes for the quick-release fasteners.
4. The quick-release fasteners of claim 1 further comprising a security cap and a stud.
5. The stud of claim 4 further comprising a stud end configured to engage a receiving portion of the security cap.
6. The security cap of claim 4 further comprising first and second button, the first button being configured to unlock the second button for movement, and the second button being configured to disengage the security cap from the stud end.
7. The quick-release fasteners of claim 4 further comprising a security collar with a first end and a second end, the first end of the security collar attaching to the support belt and the second end of the security collar attaching to the security cap.
