[0025] The present invention is a multi-use ring system that can be worn alone or with a decorative element inserted therein. The ring system includes two rings that are coupled together with a coupling mechanism. The coupling mechanism may include a hinge, magnets, mechanical detents, latches, spring-biased engagement members, or the like, or combinations thereof. Each one of the rings includes an overhang that extends towards the other ring, thereby concealing the junction between the two rings when the ring system is in a closed position. By concealing the junction, the ring system appears complete on its own and does not require an additional decorative element. In a partially open position, the ring system creates a central opening in the top portion of the ring system for accommodating a decorative element, such as a center stone of an additional ring. The central opening is surrounded by the two ring bands and the two oppositely extending overhangs. The overhang configuration described herein is illustrative and not limiting. Each ring body may include one or more overhang portions. Such overhang portions may be continuous, segmented, modular, or formed as multiple discrete extensions. The overhang portions may be integrally formed with the ring body or may be separately formed and coupled thereto. The number, size, positioning, and configuration of the overhang portions may be selectively varied, reconfigured, replaced, or interchanged while maintaining the functional concealment and structural continuity of the ring system.

The base 416 fits within the cavity 406 and is held in place when the rings are in the closed position. In this manner, the decorative element 410 is held in place between the two rings by positioning the base 416 within the cavity 406 when the rings are in an open configuration. After positioning the base 416 in the cavity 406, the rings are moved to a closed configuration with the decorative element 410 positioned therebetween. When the ring system is in the closed position with the decorative element 410 positioned therein, the post 414 extends between the two rings, the base 416 is concealed within the cavity 406, and the decorative portion 412 protrudes from the top portion of the ring system.

Each one of the rings includes an overhang that extends towards the other ring, thereby concealing the junction between the two rings when the ring system is in a closed position. By concealing the junction, the ring system appears complete on its own and does not require an additional decorative element. In a partially open position, the ring system creates a central opening in the top portion of the ring system for accommodating a decorative element, such as a center stone of an additional ring. Claims
1. A ring system comprising:a first ring having a first band;a second ring having a second band;a coupling mechanism interconnecting the first ring and the second ring such that the first ring and the second ring are moveable about the coupling mechanism between an open position and a closed position;a first overhang that extends from the first band and covers a portion of the second ring when the ring system is in the closed position; anda second overhang that extends from the second band and covers a portion of the first ring when the ring system is in the closed position,wherein the first ring and the second ring are in direct contact with each other in a top portion of the ring system when the ring system is in the closed position, such that the top portion of the ring system does not include a gap between the first ring and the second ring when the ring system is in the closed position.
2. The ring system of claim 1, further comprising an inner groove or space between the first ring and the second ring, the inner groove or space configured for accommodating a decorative insert positioned between the first ring and the second ring.
3. The ring system of claim 1, further comprising a partially open position that creates a central opening in the top portion of the ring system, wherein the central opening is completely surrounded by the first band, the first overhang, the second band, and the second overhang, and wherein the central opening is sized and shaped for accommodating a decorative element positioned between the first band and the second band.
4. The ring system of claim 1, wherein the coupling mechanism is a hinge positioned in a bottom portion of the ring system.
5. The ring system of claim 1, further comprising at least one cavity formed in an outer rim portion of at least one of the first ring and the second ring, the cavity configured to receive a base portion of a non-annular insert element positioned between the first ring and the second ring.
