[0001] The present patent application claims the benefits of priority of commonly assigned American Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 498,119, entitled “Apparatus and method for lifting and tightening skin of the face” and filed at the American Patent Office on Apr. 25, 2023.FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention generally relates to the field of skin lifting and tightening procedures. More precisely, the present invention relates to the field of apparatuses and methods for tightening and lifting skin in the context of facial esthetic procedures.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] Facial skin lifting and tightening procedures, usually done for esthetic purposes, have existed for many years and have taken different forms over time. Typically, rhytidectomies, more commonly known as facelifts, take place under the form of a large incision made on the skin on the contour of the ears that extends to the hairline of the patient. Once the skin is incised, it is typically separated from the deeper tissues in some areas of the face—typically the cheeks and some parts of the neck—and the skin tightening process takes place with sutures on the tissues under the skin. In some procedures, some excess deeper tissues can be removed in the process. At this point, it is typical that some excess skin is also removed and the incisions are closed with sutures to complete the procedure.
[0004] Other methods for lifting and tightening facial skin typically consists of variations of the aforementioned facelift procedure, the major differences being the location and the size of the incisions, the area of the face that is treated and the degree of invasiveness of the whole procedure. Typically, these methods are also irreversible. Some energy-based machines and injectable implants also attempt to tighten and lift the skin.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The shortcomings of the prior art are generally mitigated by this invention being not only less invasive than most traditional face lifting procedures, but also by the possibility of reversal procedure that it offers.
[0006] In particular, this invention consists of on an apparatus placed on the crown of the scalp of a patient, to which are attached threads or strips that pull the skin of the face during the procedure, and on a method to tighten and lift the skin of a patient by injecting a biodegradable adhesive into at least one area of the face without any incision, which makes the procedure less invasive and reversible.
[0007] Is described herein an apparatus for performing a facelift procedure, comprising a mountable base comprising an outer surface and an inner surface in contact with the head of a patient and at least one attachment member comprising a first end attachable to the base and a second end configured to be attached at predetermined areas of the skin on the face of the patient.
[0008] The outer surface of the base may comprise attachment nodes configured to mate with the first end of the at least one attachment member. The base of the apparatus may be a disc made of fabric or any other suitable material. The outer surface of the base may be made of hook-and-loop material. [0010] The present invention also comprises a kit comprising the apparatus presented herein and means for injecting a biocompatible adhesive under the skin near each said predetermined area. The biocompatible adhesive may be octylcyanoacrylate or any other suitable biocompatible adhesive.
[0011] A method for performing a facelift procedure on a patient is also presented herein. The method comprises the steps of a) placing an apparatus on the crown of the head of a patient, the apparatus comprising a base mountable on the head of a patient and at least one attachment member comprising a first end and a second end; b) attaching the second end of each of the attachment members to a predetermined location on the skin on the face of the patient; c) pulling the skin taut using the at least one attachment member; d) attaching the first end of each attachment member to the base; e) injecting a biocompatible adhesive under the skin at or near each second end to keep the skin in a taut position; f) allowing the adhesive to gel; and g) removing the apparatus from the head of the patient.
[0012] The at least one attachment member used in the method may be a thread subcutaneously attached to the skin of the patient. The method may further comprise fastening the thread using a unidirectional fastening device to pull the skin of the patient.

[0024] A novel apparatus and method for lifting and tightening skin will be described hereinafter. Although the invention is described in terms of specific illustrative embodiments, it is to be understood that the embodiments described herein are by way of example only and that the scope of the invention is not intended to be limited thereby.
[0025] Referring to FIG. 1, a patient 20 is shown with multiple possible adhesive injection points 105 on different parts of the face and neck. An attachment area 110 is also shown on the crown of the head of the patient 20, which represents the area to which bands, threads or any other similar mechanisms can be attached to connect the injection points to the attachment zone in order to pull the skin during the procedure in the direction indicated by the arrows in FIG. 1. The hair has been removed in the Figure for clarity purposes, but it is notable to understand that the injections can also be done directly under the hairline.
[0026] Now referring to FIG. 2, an embodiment of an apparatus for lifting and tightening skin is illustrated. In this embodiment, the attachment area 110 of FIG. 1 is destined to be covered by a disc 210 made of fabric or any other suitable material whose outer surface is preferably covered with hook-and-loop material allowing the adhesion of strips 215 also preferably comprising hook-and-loop material. These strips 215 will then have a hook-and-loop end that attaches to the disc 210 and an opposite end that will consist of an attachment point 205 to the patient's 20 skin. The attachment points or nodes 205 may be unitary with the strip 215 or be a disc 206 with an appropriate removable skin adhesive on one side and a complementary hook-and-loop on the other side to be attached to the strip 215. The hook-and-loop material of the disc 210, the strips 215 and the discs 206 therefore allow the user to easily adjust the tension of the strips 215 that pull on the skin to achieve the desired facelift effect. The user can make the adjustments they desire in real time on the patient 20 by changing the area to which the strips 215 are attached on the head of the patient for more or less pull on the skin. Once the desired tension is achieved on the skin, a skin compatible adhesive is injected under the skin near the discs 206 and thereafter, the apparatus keeps the tension on the skin for as long as it takes for the adhesive to solidify and to hold the skin in place without the further need for the apparatus which may then be removed.
[0027] Now referring to FIG. 3 is a representation of a before (top image) and after (bottom image) effects of the use of the apparatus to pull the skin of a patient 20. Once the skin is pulled by the strips 215, it is immediately possible to observe the potential results of the facelift, like the ones shown in FIG. 3-B. The user can then easily adjust the pull of the strips 215 in certain areas based on the desired results.
[0028] Referring to FIGS. 4 and 5, another embodiment of an apparatus for lifting and tightening skin is illustrated. In this embodiment, the attachment area 110 of FIG. 1 is covered by a disc 505 to which a series threads 410 are attached via a thread fastening device 415 designed to be attached at one end to the disc 505. The other end 515 of the threads 410 / 510 is attached subcutaneously to the skin of the patient 20 near the determined adhesive injection points 105. The user is then able to pull the skin in various points by manipulating the thread 410 / 510 from the fastening devices 415 that are directly attached to the disc 505 to allow the skin lifting and tightening in the direction of the top of the head. On one end of the thread is a unidirectional fastening device 415 through which the thread 410 passes once. The thread 410 is then passed under the patient's 20 skin near the injection point 105 and then back towards the unidirectional fastening devices 415 through which it goes again. The user 30 is then able to lift and tighten the skin by pulling the end of the thread 415 that comes out of the unidirectional fastener 425.
[0029] Once the skin is lifted and tightened so that the desired results are visible, it is then possible to inject the biodegradable adhesive under the skin in the injection points 105. The threads 410 / 510 remain in their position during the whole procedure to allow the biodegradable adhesive to solidify and to stick correctly under the skin. Once this is achieved, the apparatus may be removed.
[0030] In one embodiment of the present invention, octylcyanoacrylate, a medical grade topical tissue adhesive that has been approved for closing surgical incisions and traumatic lacerations, can be used as the biodegradable adhesive injected into at least one area of the face to lift and tighten the skin without any incision. However, it should be noted that any other biodegradable and biocompatible adhesive can also be used in the present invention. The adhesive injection points 105 can be selected based on the specific needs and desired outcomes of the procedure. The adhesive can be injected at various depths and in various patterns to achieve the desired results. The use of such adhesive provides a less invasive and reversible method for lifting and tightening and lifting the skin.
[0031] Now referring to FIG. 6, a method 600 for lifting and tightening skin in accordance with the present invention is shown. The method for performing a facelift procedure on a patient, comprises the steps of:
[0032] a) placing an apparatus on the crown of the head of a patient, the apparatus comprising a base mountable on the head of a patient and a plurality of threads or strips comprising a first end and a second end;
[0033] b) attaching the second end of each of the threads or strips to a predetermined location on the skin on the face of the patient;
[0034] c) pulling the skin taut using the threads or strips;
[0035] d) attaching the first end of each of the threads or strips to the base;
[0036] e) injecting a biocompatible adhesive under the skin at or near each second end to keep the skin in a taut position; and
[0037] f) allowing the adhesive to gel;
[0038] g) removing the apparatus from the head of the patient.
[0039] While illustrative and presently preferred embodiments of the invention have been described in detail hereinabove, it is to be understood that the inventive concepts may be otherwise variously embodied and employed and that the appended claims are intended to be construed to include such variations except insofar as limited by the prior art.

Claims
1. An apparatus for performing a facelift procedure, comprising:a) a mountable base comprising an outer surface and an inner surface in contact with the head of a patient;b) at least one attachment member comprising a first end attachable to the base and a second end configured to be attached at predetermined areas of the skin on the face of the patient.
2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the outer surface of the base comprising attachment nodes is configured to mate with the first end of the at least one attachment member.
3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the base is a disc made of fabric or any other suitable material.
4. The apparatus of claim 3, the at least one attachment member being a thread configured to mate with the attachment nodes of the base.
5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the at least one attachment member comprising a unidirectional fastening device on its first end is directly attached to the base.
6. The apparatus of claim 1, the outer surface of the base being made of hook-and-loop material.
7. The apparatus of claim 6, the at least one attachment member being a strip made of hook-and-loop material configured to mate with the hook-and-loop base.
8. A kit comprising the apparatus of claim 1 and means for injecting a biocompatible adhesive under the skin near each said predetermined area.
9. The kit of claim 8, wherein the biocompatible adhesive is octylcyanoacrylate.
10. A method for performing a facelift procedure on a patient, comprising the steps of:c) placing an apparatus on the crown of the head of a patient, the apparatus comprising a base mountable on the head of a patient and at least one attachment member comprising a first end and a second end;d) attaching the second end of each of the attachment members to a predetermined location on the skin on the face of the patient;c) pulling the skin taut using the at least one attachment member;d) attaching the first end of each attachment member to the base;e) injecting a biocompatible adhesive under the skin at or near each second end to keep the skin in a taut position;f) allowing the adhesive to gel; andg) removing the apparatus from the head of the patient.
11. The method of claim 10, the at least one attachment member being a thread subcutaneously attached to the skin of the patient.
12. The method of claim 11, further comprising fastening the thread using a unidirectional fastening device to pull the skin of the patient.
13. The method of claim 10, the at least one attachment member being a hook-and-loop strip attached to an outer surface of the skin of the patient.
14. The method of claim 12, further comprising adjusting the first end of the hook-and-loop strip to a suitable area of the base to pull the skin of the patient.
15. The method of claim 10, wherein the biocompatible adhesive is octylcyanoacrylate or any other suitable biocompatible adhesive.
16. The method of claim 10, further comprising observing in real-time and adjusting the skin taut to desired results.
