Abstract
Description
PRIORITY CLAIM
[0001] This application claims the priority filing benefit of U.S. Provisional patent application Ser. No. 18 / 950,285 filed Nov. 18, 2024 for “Layering Undergarment Minimizer” of Emma Shiers, hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety as though fully set forth herein.BACKGROUND
[0002] The trend of wearing two pairs of pants has emerged as a creative and bold fashion statement, gaining traction in various subcultures and street styles. This look typically involves layering a pair of trousers over another, often with the inner pair being more fitted and the outer pair being looser or more statement-making. This style not only offers a unique aesthetic but also serves as a practical way to adapt to fluctuating temperatures, providing warmth and versatility.
[0003] Fashion influencers and celebrities alike have played a significant role in popularizing this trend, showcasing it on social media platforms and at high-profile events. The dual-pant or layered undergarment look allows for a mix of textures, colors, and patterns, encouraging experimentation and individual expression. Designers are increasingly incorporating this layered approach into their collections, further legitimizing it within the fashion industry and encouraging consumers to embrace unconventional silhouettes.
[0004] Moreover, the trend aligns with the broader movement toward sustainability in fashion, as it encourages consumers to repurpose existing garments instead of purchasing new ones. By layering, individuals can create fresh looks from items already in their wardrobe, promoting creativity while reducing waste. This practical aspect has resonated with environmentally conscious shoppers looking to make thoughtful fashion choices.
[0005] The trend, however, is not without downsides. For example, wearing more than one pair of pants can be bulky and uncomfortable, and in warmer temperatures or indoors, can feel too hot.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0028] The rising trend of wearing boxers or other undergarments under loose-fitting pants presents several challenges. As this trend has evolved, many wearers have found it challenging to wear certain undergarments under pants with a slimmer silhouette. Layering causes discomfort and distorts the figure. Women are particularly inclined toward this trend and often wear men's boxers under their pants to achieve the layered look. However, since most boxers are designed for the male body, they tend to be uncomfortable and unflattering for women. This challenge also applies to bloomers, as people aim for a layered look with them but struggle to find bloomers that lay properly under pants. Even when bloomers do layer correctly, they often aren't compatible with more form-fitting bottoms that have a slimmer silhouette around the hips.
[0029] The invention disclosed herein relates to modular layering garment systems including a modular attachment system configured to couple a Base undergarment and an interchangeable member at a defined interface. The modular attachment system is the core focus of the present disclosure and is described across lower-body and upper-body implementations, multiple garment categories, and multiple coupling arrangements.
[0030] An example layering garment is disclosed that provides the visual appearance of wearing multiple pairs of pants by simulating undergarments or secondary trousers layered beneath outerwear, without the physical bulk or discomfort typically associated with wearing multiple separate garments. Having the appearance of layering more than one pair of pants reflects a shift toward bold self-expression, versatility, and sustainability in fashion. As this trend continues to evolve, the layering garment invites wearers to explore their personal style while making a statement about their creativity. Whether on the streets or in high fashion, this layered look is likely to remain a captivating element of contemporary style.
[0031] An example modular layering garment system is provided including a base undergarment and an interchangeable member that are separable components configured for releasable coupling. The base undergarment includes an interface region and a modular attachment system positioned at the interface region. The modular attachment system features channel-forming flaps 5, which include an inner flap 6 positioned on a body-facing side and secured along at least one attachment line, and an outer flap 7 positioned opposite the inner flap 6 and secured along a hinge zone 11. Together, the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7 define an insert-receiving channel 12. The outer flap 7 is movable about the hinge zone 11 between an open configuration exposing an opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12, and a closed configuration wherein the outer flap 7 overlies the inner flap 6 to cover and at least partially enclose the insert-receiving channel 12. The modular attachment system further includes at least one latching element 9 disposed at an engagement region 8.
[0032] In an example, the interchangeable member includes a visible body portion extending from an insert portion 14 configured to be removably received within the insert-receiving channel 12 through the opening region when the outer flap 7 is in the open configuration. The insert portion 14 includes opposing first 17 and second flat sides 18 configured to contact opposing surfaces of the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7 when seated within the insert-receiving channel 12. The insert portion 14 further includes at least one engagement feature configured to cooperate with the latching element 9 to releasably couple the interchangeable member to the base undergarment. In an assembled condition, the insert portion 14 is seated within the insert-receiving channel 12, the outer flap 7 is repositioned to the closed configuration restricting access to the opening region, and the interchangeable member is releasably retained relative to the base undergarment by structural capture of the insert portion 14 between the channel-forming flaps 5 alongside latching engagement at the engagement region 8. The engagement feature of the insert portion 14 includes either: (i) corresponding latching elements 10 configured for direct mating engagement with the base undergarment latching elements 9, or (ii) entry points 16 extending through the insert portion 14 configured to align with latching elements 9 to permit releasable engagement while the insert portion 14 remains seated.
[0033] In an example, the base undergarment may be configured for different regions of the body. In an example, the base undergarment is a lower base undergarment 2 configured for wear on a lower torso region, wherein the interface region includes a waist region 3. The lower base undergarment 2 may be configured as a silhouette selected from a boyshort, a thong, a cheeky, a brief, a trunk, and a boxer brief. In other embodiments, the base undergarment is an upper base undergarment 19 configured for wear on an upper torso region, wherein the interface region includes a band region 20. The upper base undergarment 19 may be configured as a silhouette selected from a bralette, an underwire bra, a sports bra, and a bandeau.
[0034] In an example, the interchangeable member may likewise be configured in various silhouettes and styles. The interchangeable member may be an interchangeable waistband member 1 having the insert portion 14 positioned along a lower region and a visible waistband body portion 13 extending circumferentially and positioned externally relative to the base undergarment. Waistband silhouettes may include a sweatpant waistband, a jean waistband, a trouser waistband, a basketball short waistband, a traditional woven boxer waistband, and a bloomer waistband. Alternatively, the interchangeable member may be an interchangeable fold over member 22 having the insert portion 14 positioned along an upper region and a visible fold over body portion 23 configured to overlie at least an upper portion of a lower body garment. Fold over silhouettes include a mini skirt fold over, a midi skirt fold over, and a maxi skirt fold over.
[0035] Further interchangeable member variations include underlay and tuck away options. The interchangeable member may be an interchangeable underlay member 24 with an insert portion 14 positioned along an upper region and a visible underlay body portion 25 configured to extend downward beneath an upper body garment. Underlay silhouettes include a medium-length button-down underlay, a short-length tank-top-style underlay, and a long-length lace-style underlay. The interchangeable member may also be an interchangeable tuck away member 26 with an insert portion 14 positioned along a lower region and a visible tuck away body portion 27 extending upward along at least a portion of a torso such that at least a lower portion of the tuck away body portion 27 is retained in a tucked configuration relative to the base undergarment. Tuck away silhouettes include a button-down shirt, a tank top, a t-shirt, and a long-sleeve shirt.
[0036] In an example, the system incorporates releasable coupling configurations. In embodiments utilizing direct mating engagement, the at least one latching element 9 and the at least one corresponding latching element 10 include releasable coupling structures selected from buttons, snaps, hook-and-loop structures, hook-and-eye structures, clasps, interlocking fasteners, g-hooks, push snap buckles, and magnets. In embodiments utilizing engagement through the insert portion 14, the outer flap 7 further includes corresponding latching elements 10 configured to engage the latching elements 9 of the base undergarment through entry points 16 when the outer flap 7 is moved toward the closed configuration. These entry points 16 may include openings, slits, cut-outs, apertures, notches, reinforced holes, and buttonhole-type openings. Furthermore, latching elements 9 may be positioned at spaced circumferential locations including a front-center region, a back-center region, and one or more side regions around the interface region.
[0037] In an example, the system may include additional retention features. The modular attachment system may further include a high-friction region 15 disposed on at least one of the opposing first 17 and second flat sides 18 of the insert portion 14, a channel-facing side of the inner flap 6, and a channel-facing side of the outer flap 7 to increase frictional engagement and resist relative sliding or withdrawal of the insert portion 14. The high-friction region 15 may include printed elastomer features, silicone features, a textured coating, a friction-enhancing film, a grippy tape, or a high-friction textile structure.
[0038] The modular attachment system may be configured to support releasable coupling between the base undergarment and the interchangeable member through cooperation between interface components including channel-forming flaps 5, an insert-receiving channel 12, an insert portion 14, and, in an example, one or more latching-related components positioned at an engagement region 8. In this manner, the disclosed systems may permit repeated attachment and detachment of compatible garment components while maintaining positional retention, alignment, and a selected aesthetic or functional effect during wear.
[0039] The subject matter described herein includes embodiments directed to lower-body and upper-body garment systems, representative latching configuration families, attachment and detachment sequences. In an example, the disclosed interface arrangements may additionally support permanent attachment implementations. Further embodiments, configurations.
[0040] Before continuing, it is noted that as used herein, the terms “includes” and “including” mean, but is not limited to, “includes” or “including” and “includes at least” or “including at least.” The term “based on” means “based on” and “based at least in part on.”
[0041] Here is a detailed description of the invention based on the provided text, grouped and ordered by the figure numbers.
[0042] FIGS. 1A-D are flat and worn views of the hero embodiments of the lower base undergarment 2 and the interchangeable waistband member 1 in an assembled condition. The modular layering garment system includes a modular attachment system configured to releasably connect a base undergarment and an interchangeable member at a defined interface, permitting repeated attachment and detachment over multiple cycles. In the assembled condition, an insert portion 14 of the interchangeable member is received within an insert-receiving channel 12 defined by channel-forming flaps 5 of the base undergarment so as to position the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment at the interface and maintain alignment during wear. Retention is provided by structural capture of the insert portion 14 within the insert-receiving channel 12, frictional engagement between interfacing components, releasable latching engagement at an engagement region 8, or combinations thereof, while still permitting intentional manual release. These figures depict assembled front, back, and side views of the interchangeable waistband member 1 configured as a sweatpant waistband coupled to a lower base undergarment 2 configured as a boyshort in a closed configuration using a latching configuration, as well as a worn view where a lower body garment (pants) is worn over the lower base undergarment 2.
[0043] FIGS. 2-7 are flat views of the hero embodiment of the lower base undergarment 2 configured as a boyshort, shown in both closed and open configurations. The lower base undergarment 2 is worn on a lower torso region, covers at least the groin and buttock regions, and includes a waist region 3 and a lower body region 4 with leg openings. It may include a front portion, a back portion, a crotch region (optionally with a gusset), and may be formed from textile materials like stretch knit fabrics. The modular attachment system is positioned at an upper portion of the lower base undergarment 2 and extends around at least a portion of the waist opening. The system includes channel-forming flaps 5 including an inner flap 6 and an outer flap 7 that define an insert-receiving channel 12 configured to removably receive an insert portion 14. The inner flap 6 is positioned on a body-facing side, secured along at least one attachment line, and may include elastic reinforcement to lie flat against the wearer, reducing rolling or folding. The outer flap 7 is positioned opposite the inner flap 6 and is secured along an attachment line defining a hinge zone 11, permitting movement of the outer flap 7 between the open and closed configurations. The insert-receiving channel 12 has a height and a depth sized to receive the insert portion 14, where structural retention is provided by contact between the inner 6 and outer flaps 7 against opposing surfaces of the insert portion 14, aided by circumferential stretch of the waist region during wear. In the closed configuration (FIGS. 2-4), the outer flap 7 overlies the inner flap 6 to cover and at least partially enclose the insert-receiving channel 12, restricting access to the opening region and assisting in retaining the insert portion 14 during wear. In the open configuration (FIGS. 5-7), the outer flap 7 is repositioned relative to the inner flap 6 (e.g., folded or pivoted about the hinge zone 11) to expose an opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12, permitting insertion and withdrawal of the insert portion 14. The lower base undergarment 2 further includes one or more latching elements 9 associated with the modular attachment system, which participate in releasable coupling at an engagement region 8 and may be positioned at various circumferential locations (front-center, back-center, sides). These latching elements 9 may be secured to the inner flap 6, outer flap 7, or adjacent to the hinge zone 11.
[0044] FIGS. 8-11 are flat and transparent angle views of the hero embodiment of the interchangeable waistband member 1 configured as a sweatpant waistband. The interchangeable waistband member 1 extends circumferentially as a continuous loop around the wearer during use and aligns with the waist region 3 of the lower base undergarment 2. It includes a waistband body portion 13 and a lower region defining an insert portion 14 configured to be removably received within the insert-receiving channel 12. The waistband body portion 13 includes a visible body portion positioned externally relative to the lower base undergarment 2 and may include elasticized regions, drawstrings, pockets, or other aesthetic details. The insert portion 14 extends circumferentially and includes opposing first 17 and second flat sides 18 defined by material layers. When received in the insert-receiving channel 12, the first flat side 17 faces outward away from the wearer and the second flat side 18 faces inward, contacting opposing surfaces of the inner 6 and outer flaps 7. The insert portion 14 may include a high-friction region 15 on one or both flat sides to increase frictional engagement with the channel-forming flaps 5, resisting relative sliding, shifting, or withdrawal during wear. The high-friction region 15 can be printed elastomer, silicone, a textured coating, or grippy tape. In this configuration, the insert portion 14 includes one or more corresponding latching elements 10 positioned on one or both flat sides to directly engage the latching elements 9 of the lower base undergarment 2. The corresponding latching elements 10 may be located at multiple circumferential locations and are implemented as releasable coupling structures like hook-and-loop, snaps, clasps, buttons, or magnets.
[0045] FIGS. 12A-B are transparent angle views showing the hero embodiment of the interchangeable waistband member 1 aligned for attachment to the lower base undergarment 2. The lower base undergarment 2 is shown in an open configuration to expose the opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12. The interchangeable waistband member 1 is shown spaced above with its insert portion 14 positioned circumferentially to correspond with the insert-receiving channel 12. Direction arrows indicate a downward insertion direction in which the insert portion 14 is advanced into the insert-receiving channel 12 along a waistband path toward the engagement region 8. The engagement region 8 refers to a designated region of the modular attachment system where engagement, alignment, and retention between components occur, serving as a consistent interface reference. When further aligned, the components register at the engagement region 8 along the waist interface prior to the engagement of latching components and the repositioning of the outer flap 7 to the closed configuration.
[0046] FIGS. 13A-J are cross-sectional views illustrating representative latching configuration implementations. In these latching configurations, releasable coupling is achieved through direct mating engagement between latching elements 9 associated with the base undergarment and corresponding latching elements 10 associated with the insert portion 14. The figures show the insert portion 14 seated within the insert-receiving channel 12 and structurally captured by the channel-forming flaps 5, with the outer flap 7 partially displaced to depict the open configuration. The implementations shown include a smaller / narrower hook-and-loop arrangement on the inner flap 6 and insert portion 14 (FIG. 13A), a larger / wider hook-and-loop arrangement (FIG. 13B), a button-style coupling (FIG. 13C), snap fasteners optionally combined with magnets (FIG. 13D), hook-and-loop tape (FIG. 13E), interlocking fasteners (FIG. 13F), g-hooks (FIG. 13G), garter hook components (FIG. 13H), interlocking twin clasps (FIG. 13I), and push snap buckles (FIG. 13J).
[0047] FIGS. 14A-I illustrate a representative attachment sequence of the lower base undergarment 2 and interchangeable waistband member 1 hero embodiments implemented in a latching configuration. Attachment begins with the components separate and the lower base undergarment 2 in the closed configuration (FIG. 14A). The outer flap 7 is moved downward about the hinge zone 11 relative to the inner flap 6 to the open configuration to expose the opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12 (FIG. 14B). The insert portion 14 is then aligned, inserted, and seated into the insert-receiving channel 12, entering the engagement region 8 (FIG. 14C). Direct mating engagement then occurs between each latching element 9 on the inner flap 6 and each corresponding latching element 10 on the insert portion 14 at a plurality of circumferential locations (FIGS. 14D-E). Once seated and engaged, the outer flap 7 is repositioned about the hinge zone 11 toward the closed configuration (FIG. 14F). The fully attached condition features the insert portion 14 seated within the insert-receiving channel 12, the latching components engaged, and the outer flap 7 overlying the opening region to cover and at least partially enclose the interface (FIGS. 14G-I). Detachment is carried out by reversing this sequence, moving the outer flap 7 to the open configuration, disengaging the latching components, and withdrawing the insert portion 14.
[0048] FIGS. 15A-C are cross-sectional views illustrating representative latching configuration implementations. In these configurations, releasable coupling occurs while the insert portion 14 remains seated within the insert-receiving channel 12. The insert portion 14 includes one or more entry points 16—such as openings, slits, cut-outs, or buttonholes—aligned at the engagement region 8 with latching elements 9 associated with the base undergarment. As the outer flap 7 moves toward the closed configuration, corresponding latching elements 10 associated with the outer flap 7 engage the latching elements 9 through the entry points 16. Implementations shown include a button-style coupling (FIG. 15A), snap fasteners optionally combined with magnets (FIG. 15B), and a keyhole-style coupling (FIG. 15C).
[0049] FIGS. 16A-I illustrate a representative attachment sequence of the lower base undergarment 2 and interchangeable waistband member 1 hero embodiments implemented in a latching configuration. Attachment begins with the lower base undergarment 2 in the closed configuration (FIG. 16A). The outer flap 7 is moved about the hinge zone 11 to expose the opening region (FIG. 16B). The insert portion 14 is aligned and seated into the insert-receiving channel 12 such that each latching element 9 on the inner flap 6 registers with each entry point 16 on the insert portion 14 while the outer flap 7 remains open (FIGS. 16C-D). The outer flap 7 is then repositioned partially into the closed configuration so that the corresponding latching elements 10 on the outer flap 7 engage the latching elements 9 through the entry points 16 at the engagement region 8 (FIG. 16E). The outer flap 7 continues toward the closed configuration (FIG. 16F). In the attached condition, the insert portion 14 remains seated, and the outer flap 7 overlies the opening region to enclose the interface (FIGS. 16G-I).
[0050] FIGS. 17A-21B are flat views of another lower base undergarment 2, each including an inner flap 6, an outer flap 7, an insert-receiving channel 12, and configured to maintain compatibility with an interchangeable member through the modular attachment system. [0158] Corresponding Latching Elements. The insert portion 14 of the interchangeable tuck away member 26 may include one or more corresponding latching elements 10 associated with the modular attachment system (FIGS. 42A-43). Releasable coupling at the engagement region 8 may be implemented according to different latching configuration families, including Example A and Example B, and the presence and placement of corresponding latching elements 10 may vary depending on the selected latching example.
[0159] In embodiments implementing an Example A latching configuration, the corresponding latching elements 10 are disposed on the insert portion 14 and are positioned to engage one or more latching elements 9 associated with the lower base undergarment 2 when the insert portion 14 is received within the insert-receiving channel 12. The Corresponding latching elements 10 may be disposed on one flat side of the insert portion 14 or on both flat sides of the insert portion 14. [0160] In the hero embodiment, the corresponding latching elements 10 may be provided at a plurality of circumferential locations, including a front-center location, a back-center location, left and right side locations, and optionally additional locations spaced therebetween. The corresponding latching elements 10 may be implemented using any suitable releasable coupling structures, including hook-and-loop, hook-and-eye, snaps, clasps, buttons, magnets, and hybrid combinations thereof. The corresponding latching elements 10 may be secured to the insert portion 14 by any suitable technique, including stitching, bar-tacking, bonding, welding, capture within a seam, or combinations thereof.
[0161] In an example, the insert portion 14 may omit corresponding latching elements 10 and instead include one or more entry points 16 configured to cooperate with latching components associated with the lower base undergarment 2 when the insert portion 14 is seated within the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0162] Entry Points. In an example, the insert portion 14 of the interchangeable tuck away member 26 includes one or more entry points 16 associated with the modular attachment system. The entry points 16 may be configured to cooperate with latching components associated with the lower base undergarment 2, for example in embodiments implementing an Example B latching configuration in which releasable engagement occurs while the insert portion 14 remains seated within the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0163] The entry points 16 may be positioned on one or both flat sides of the insert portion 14 or may extend through the thickness of the insert portion 14 at selected latching locations. The entry points 16 may be arranged as a single entry location, a plurality of spaced entry locations, or a pattern of entry locations corresponding to one or more engagement regions 8 of the lower base undergarment 2.
[0164] In the hero embodiment, the entry points 16 may be provided at a plurality of circumferential locations, including a front-center location, a back-center location, left and right side locations, and optionally additional locations spaced therebetween. Each entry point 16 may be configured as an opening, aperture, slit, notch, cut-out, reinforced hole, buttonhole-type opening, or other access feature sized and shaped to permit releasable engagement with a corresponding latching component associated with the lower base undergarment 2.
[0165] In an example, one or more entry points 16 may include reinforcement structures to resist stretching, fraying, or deformation during repeated use. The entry points 16 shown in connection with the hero embodiment are provided by way of example only and are not limiting.Modular Attachment System.
[0166] System Overview. The modular attachment system is configured to releasably connect a base undergarment and an interchangeable member. The modular attachment system permits repeated attachment and detachment of an interchangeable member relative to a base undergarment over multiple attachment and detachment cycles. In the embodiments described herein, the modular attachment system is positioned at a designated interface region of the base undergarment and at a corresponding edge region of the interchangeable member, with the location of the modular attachment system varying according to the construction and intended pairing of the respective components.
[0167] The modular attachment system may be implemented across different disclosed embodiment pairings. In an assembled condition, an insert portion 14 of the interchangeable member is received within an insert-receiving channel 12 defined by channel-forming flaps 5 of the base undergarment so as to position the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment at the interface (FIGS. 12A-B).
[0168] Retention may be provided by structural capture of the insert portion 14 within the insert-receiving channel 12, frictional engagement between interfacing components, releasable latching engagement at an engagement region 8, or combinations thereof. Releasable coupling may be implemented using different latching families, including Example A and Example B configurations described herein, while still permitting intentional manual release.
[0169] Embodiment Pairings & Interface Regions. The modular attachment system may be implemented across different compatible pairings of base undergarments and interchangeable members, with the location of the interface varying according to the construction and intended pairing of the respective components.
[0170] In embodiments including a lower base undergarment 2, the modular attachment system is positioned at a waist region 3 of the lower base undergarment 2 (FIGS. 2-7). In such embodiments, the corresponding interchangeable member may include an interface-defining region positioned at either a lower region or an upper region of the interchangeable member, depending on the particular member type. For example, the interchangeable waistband member 1 includes the modular attachment system at a lower region thereof, the interchangeable fold over member 22 includes the modular attachment system at an upper region thereof, and the interchangeable tuck away member 26 includes the modular attachment system at a lower region thereof. In an example, the interchangeable waistband member 1 may be permanently affixed to the lower base undergarment 2 at or adjacent to the engagement region 8 by stitching, bonding, welding, or another permanent attachment technique, such that the interchangeable waistband member 1 is fixed relative to the lower base undergarment 2 rather than removably coupled thereto (FIGS. 48A-B).
[0171] In embodiments including an upper base undergarment 19, the modular attachment system is positioned at a band region 20 of the upper base undergarment 19 (FIGS. 31A-34C). In such embodiments, the interchangeable underlay member 24 includes the modular attachment system at an upper region thereof for releasable coupling with the upper base undergarment 19.
[0172] Accordingly, the disclosed pairings are defined such that the interface region of each base undergarment corresponds to a compatible edge region of the associated interchangeable member. In this manner, the lower base undergarment 2 is configured for pairing with the interchangeable waistband member 1, the interchangeable fold over member 22, and the interchangeable tuck away member 26, while the upper base undergarment 19 is configured for pairing with the interchangeable underlay member 24.
[0173] Assembled Condition. In an assembled condition, the interchangeable member is attached to the base undergarment such that the respective components are positioned in operative relationship to one another at the modular attachment system (referring to hero embodiment examples, FIGS. 1A-D). In the assembled condition, an insert portion 14 of the interchangeable member is received within an insert-receiving channel 12 of the base undergarment, the insert-receiving channel 12 being defined by the channel-forming flaps 5 of the base undergarment. Receipt of the insert portion 14 within the insert-receiving channel 12 establishes positioning of the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment and maintains alignment of the paired components at the interface during wear.
[0174] In an example, the assembled condition further includes releasable engagement at an engagement region 8 such that one or more latching-related components, friction-enhancing components, and / or structurally cooperating interface components act together to retain the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment while still permitting intentional manual detachment. In the assembled condition, the interchangeable member and the base undergarment cooperate to present a selected aesthetic appearance, functional coverage arrangement, garment layering effect, and / or positional retention function, depending on the selected embodiment pairing.
[0175] The assembled condition shown in the drawings is illustrative only and is not limiting. For example, in some figures the assembled condition is shown using the lower base undergarment 2 and the interchangeable waistband member 1 hero embodiments (FIGS. 1A-D), although the same system principles may be implemented in other compatible pairings disclosed herein, including pairings of the Lower base undergarment 2 with an interchangeable fold over member 22 or an interchangeable tuck away member 26, and pairings of the upper base undergarment 19 with an interchangeable underlay member 24.
[0176] Detached Condition. In a detached condition, the interchangeable member is separated from the base undergarment such that the respective components are no longer coupled to one another at the modular attachment system. In the detached condition, the insert portion 14 of the interchangeable member is not received within the insert-receiving channel 12 of the base undergarment, and the base undergarment and the interchangeable member remain separate and independently positionable relative to one another.
[0177] Although the components are separated in the detached condition, the modular attachment system remains configured to permit subsequent alignment and reattachment of the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment. For example, the insert portion 14 remains configured for subsequent insertion into the insert-receiving channel 12, and the interface components remain arranged such that the interchangeable member may later be repositioned into an assembled condition through a subsequent attachment sequence.
[0178] Closed Configuration. In a closed configuration, the outer flap 7 overlies the inner flap 6 such that the insert-receiving channel 12 is covered and at least partially enclosed (FIGS. 2-4, FIGS. 31A-C, and FIGS. 33A-C). In this configuration, the outer flap 7 is positioned relative to the inner flap 6 so as to restrict access to the opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12. The closed configuration may be maintained by the inherent positioning of the outer flap 7, by elastic recovery of one or more interface components, by engagement of latching-related components, or by combinations thereof.
[0179] When an insert portion 14 of an interchangeable member is received within the insert-receiving channel 12, the closed configuration may assist in retaining the insert portion 14 within the insert-receiving channel 12 during wear by maintaining coverage over the opening region and by preserving the positional relationship between the channel-forming flaps 5 and the insert portion 14. In an example, the closed configuration further places one or more interface components in aligned relationship at the engagement region 8 such that releasable latching may occur in this state when latching components are present.
[0180] Open Configuration. In an open configuration, the outer flap 7 is displaced relative to the inner flap 6 such that the opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12 is exposed (FIGS. 5-7, FIGS. 32A-C, and FIGS. 34A-C). In this configuration, the outer flap 7 is repositioned away from the inner flap 6, for example by folding, pivoting, or otherwise moving about a hinge zone 11, such that access is provided to the insert-receiving channel 12. The open configuration thereby permits insertion of the insert portion 14 into the insert-receiving channel 12 and withdrawal of the insert portion 14 from the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0181] The open configuration may be used during attachment of an interchangeable member to a base undergarment and during detachment of an interchangeable member from a base undergarment. In an example, the open configuration also exposes one or more interface components at or adjacent to the engagement region 8 so as to facilitate alignment, engagement, disengagement, inspection, or manual manipulation of the modular attachment system. Once insertion, withdrawal, or other intended manipulation has been completed, the outer flap 7 may be returned toward the inner flap 6 so that the modular attachment system transitions from the open configuration to the closed configuration.Channel-Forming Components.
[0182] Inner Flap. The modular attachment system includes an inner flap 6 positioned on a body-facing side of the base undergarment such that, in use, the inner flap 6 contacts the wearer's body (FIGS. 5-7, FIGS. 32A-C, and FIGS. 34A-C). The inner flap 6 is secured to the base undergarment along at least one attachment line at a designated interface region of the base undergarment, for example by stitching, bonding, capture within a seam, or combinations thereof. In an example, the inner flap 6 may be formed from an elastic material or elastic band construction and may optionally be wrapped in the same fabric as the base undergarment.
[0183] In an example, the inner flap 6 includes elastic reinforcement and is configured to lie flat against the wearer during use, thereby promoting conformability and reducing rolling, folding, or displacement of interface components. A channel-facing side of the inner flap 6 may optionally include a high-friction region 15 configured to increase frictional engagement with an insert portion 14 received within the insert-receiving channel 12. The inner flap 6 defines one side of the insert-receiving channel 12 and cooperates with the outer flap 7 to receive and retain the insert portion 14 of a compatible interchangeable member.
[0184] Outer Flap. The modular attachment system further includes an outer flap 7 positioned opposite the inner flap 6 and configured to move relative thereto between an open configuration and a closed configuration (FIGS. 2-7 and FIGS. 31A-34C). The outer flap 7 is arranged such that, in the closed configuration, the outer flap 7 overlies the inner flap 6 and covers at least a portion of the insert-receiving channel 12, while in the open configuration the outer flap 7 is displaced relative to the inner flap 6 to expose an opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0185] The outer flap 7 may be secured to the base undergarment along an attachment region that permits flap movement, as described further with respect to the hinge zone 11. In an example, the outer flap 7 may be formed from an elastic material or elastic band construction and may optionally be wrapped in the same fabric as the base undergarment. The outer flap 7 may further include a free edge positioned opposite the hinge zone 11, and the free edge may include a folded hem, a bound edge, a bonded edge, elastic reinforcement, tape reinforcement, or combinations thereof to maintain edge stability.
[0186] In an example, a channel-facing side of the outer flap 7 may include a high-friction region 15 configured to increase frictional engagement with the insert portion 14. The outer flap 7 defines an opposite side of the insert-receiving channel 12 and cooperates with the inner flap 6 to at least partially enclose the insert portion 14 when the modular attachment system is in the closed configuration.
[0187] Hinge Zone. The modular attachment system further includes a hinge zone 11 at which the outer flap 7 is attached relative to the base undergarment such that the outer flap 7 is movable relative to the inner flap 6 (FIGS. 5-7, FIGS. 32A-C and FIGS. 34A-C). The hinge zone 11 permits repositioning of the outer flap 7 between the open configuration and the closed configuration and thereby facilitates selective exposure and coverage of the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0188] The hinge zone 11 may be implemented in any suitable manner that permits repeated movement of the outer flap 7 relative to the inner flap 6 over multiple attachment and detachment cycles. By way of example and not limitation, the hinge zone 11 may be formed by a fold over construction, a stitched hinge seam, a bonded hinge line, an elastic hinge tape, or combinations thereof. In an example, the hinge zone 11 may be integrated into an elastic band structure, a folded material region, a seam-defined transition region, or another flexible attachment region configured to permit movement of the outer flap 7 while maintaining attachment to the base undergarment.
[0189] Insert-Receiving Channel. The insert-receiving channel 12 is defined as a space between the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7 of the base undergarment and is configured to removably receive an insert portion 14 of an interchangeable member (FIGS. 5-7, FIGS. 32A-C and FIGS. 34A-C). The insert-receiving channel 12 includes an opening region through which the insert portion 14 may be inserted into and withdrawn from the insert-receiving channel 12 during attachment and detachment of the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment.
[0190] In different embodiments, the insert-receiving channel 12 may extend around at least a portion of a selected interface region of the base undergarment, including at least a portion of a waist region 3 of a lower base undergarment 2 or at least a portion of a band region 20 of an upper base undergarment 19. The insert-receiving channel 12 has a height and a depth sized to receive the insert portion 14 while permitting insertion, seating, and retention thereof within the modular attachment system.
[0191] When the insert portion 14 is received within the insert-receiving channel 12, contact between the insert portion 14 and opposing channel-forming surfaces of the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7 may contribute to retention of the insert portion 14 within the modular attachment system during wear. In an example, elastic tension, material recovery, and / or conforming contact within the insert-receiving channel 12 may further increase retention by resisting relative movement of the insert portion 14 after insertion.
[0192] Insert Portion. The insert portion 14 is a portion of the interchangeable member configured to be received within the insert-receiving channel 12 of the base undergarment and to participate in releasable coupling of the interchangeable member to the base undergarment (FIGS. 8-10, FIGS. 27A-B, FIG. 38A and FIGS. 42A-C). The location of the insert portion 14 may vary depending on the type of interchangeable member. In an example, the insert portion 14 is located at a lower region of the interchangeable member, for example in an interchangeable waistband member 1 or an interchangeable tuck away member 26. In other embodiments, the insert portion 14 is located at an upper region of the interchangeable member, for example in an interchangeable fold over member 22 or an interchangeable underlay member 24.
[0193] The insert portion 14 may include opposing first 17 and second flat sides 18 defined by material layers in the insert portion 14 region. When the insert portion 14 is received within the insert-receiving channel 12, the opposing flat sides are positioned to contact opposing surfaces of the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7. In this manner, the insert portion 14 functions as the portion of the interchangeable member that is insertable into, removable from, and retainable within the modular attachment system.
[0194] In an example, the insert portion 14 may further include one or more corresponding latching elements 10, one or more entry points 16, a high-friction region 15, or combinations thereof. The particular features present on the insert portion 14 may vary depending on the selected latching example, desired retention characteristics, and the construction of the associated interchangeable member.
[0195] Engagement Region. As used herein, an engagement region 8 refers to a designated region of the modular attachment system at which engagement, alignment, and / or retention between components occurs during use (FIGS. 14C-F, FIGS. 30D-H, FIGS. 41C-F and FIGS. 47C-G). The engagement region 8 is defined relative to the base undergarment and serves as a consistent interface reference for identifying where releasable coupling and associated component interaction occur.
[0196] In a closed configuration, the engagement region 8 may include one or more overlapping, aligned, and / or adjacent interface components, including portions of the inner flap 6, the outer flap 7, and the insert portion 14, and may further include one or more latching-related components where releasable coupling occurs. In an open configuration, the engagement region 8 continues to refer to the same general interface location even though the outer flap 7 has been displaced relative to the inner flap 6, and may thereby serve as a reference region for insertion, alignment, latching, unlatching, and other interface interactions. In a detached condition, the engagement region 8 remains defined relative to the base undergarment even though the interchangeable member is separated from the base undergarment and the insert portion 14 is not received within the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0197] High-Friction Region. In an example, a high-friction region 15 may be provided as an optional feature of the modular attachment system to increase frictional engagement between interfacing components (FIG. 11). The high-friction region 15 may be disposed on one or both flat sides of the insert portion 14, on a channel-facing side of the inner flap 6, on a channel-facing side of the outer flap 7, or on any combination thereof.
[0198] When present, the high-friction region 15 is configured to increase frictional engagement between the insert portion 14 and one or more opposing surfaces within the insert-receiving channel 12, thereby helping to resist relative sliding, shifting, and / or withdrawal of the insert portion 14 during wear. In an example, the high-friction region 15 acts in combination with structural capture and / or releasable latching to improve retention of the interchangeable member relative to the base undergarment.
[0199] The high-friction region 15 may be implemented in any suitable manner, including printed elastomer features, silicone features, a textured coating, a friction-enhancing film, a grippy tape, a high-friction textile structure, or combinations thereof.
[0200] In an example, the high-friction region 15 may extend continuously along one or more portions of the insert portion 14, the inner flap 6, and / or the outer flap 7. In other embodiments, the high-friction region 15 may be localized to selected regions of the interface. In still other embodiments, the high-friction region 15 may be omitted where sufficient retention is provided by other aspects of the modular attachment system.
[0201] Retention Mechanisms. Retention of an interchangeable member relative to a base undergarment may be achieved in any suitable manner within the modular attachment system, including structural retention, frictional retention, latching retention, or combinations thereof. The particular retention mechanism or combination of mechanisms may vary depending on the embodiment pairing, material construction, and selected interface features.
[0202] Structural retention may be provided by physical capture of the insert portion 14 within the insert-receiving channel 12. For example, opposing channel-forming surfaces of the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7 may constrain the insert portion 14 when it is received within the insert-receiving channel 12, thereby resisting displacement and maintaining positional alignment during wearer movement.
[0203] Frictional retention may be provided by contact pressure between the insert portion 14 and the channel-forming surfaces of the inner flap 6 and the outer flap 7, optionally enhanced by one or more high-friction regions 15. Such frictional retention may resist relative sliding or withdrawal of the insert portion 14 within the insert-receiving channel 12 during use.
[0204] Latching retention may be provided by engagement of one or more latching components at the engagement region 8, including direct engagement between mating latching components or engagement through one or more entry points 16 depending on the selected latching example. In an example, the modular attachment system may employ multiple retention mechanisms simultaneously such that structural retention, frictional retention, and latching retention collectively contribute to maintaining the interchangeable member in a selected position relative to the base undergarment during wear.Latching Configurations.
[0205] Example A. In embodiments implementing this example latching configuration, releasable coupling is achieved through direct engagement between one or more latching elements 9 associated with the base undergarment and one or more corresponding latching elements 10 associated with the insert portion 14 of the interchangeable member (FIGS. 14A-141). In such embodiments, the latching elements 9 and the corresponding latching elements 10 are configured to mate directly with one another at one or more locations of the engagement region 8 when the insert portion 14 is received within the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0206] The latching elements 9 associated with the base undergarment may be positioned at any suitable locations, including front-center, back-center, side locations, or other spaced locations along the relevant interface region. Similarly, the corresponding latching elements 10 associated with the insert portion 14 may be positioned at corresponding locations such that direct mating engagement occurs when the paired components are aligned and assembled.
[0207] The latching elements 9 and corresponding latching elements 10 of an Example A configuration may be implemented using any suitable releasable coupling structures, including buttons, snaps, hook-and-loop structures, hook-and-eye structures, clasps, magnets, and hybrid combinations thereof (FIGS. 13A-J). Any latching structure shown in the drawings is provided by way of example only and is not limiting.
[0208] Example B. In embodiments implementing this example latching configuration, releasable coupling occurs while the insert portion 14 remains seated within the insert-receiving channel 12 (FIGS. 16A-I). In such embodiments, the insert portion 14 includes one or more entry points 16 aligned at the engagement region 8 with one or more latching elements 9 associated with the base undergarment. As the outer flap 7 is moved toward the closed configuration, one or more corresponding latching elements 10 associated with the outer flap 7 engage the one or more latching elements 9 through the one or more entry points 16, thereby releasably coupling the interchangeable member to the base undergarment.
[0209] The one or more latching elements 9 may be positioned at any suitable locations along the relevant interface region, including front-center, back-center, side locations, or other spaced locations. In an example, the one or more latching elements 9 are disposed on the inner flap 6 and the one or more corresponding latching elements 10 are disposed on the outer flap 7.
[0210] The one or more entry points 16 may be configured as openings, slits, cut-outs, apertures, notches, reinforced holes, buttonhole-type openings, or other access features sized and shaped to permit releasable engagement through the insert portion 14 while the insert portion 14 remains received within the insert-receiving channel 12. In an example, one or more entry points 16 may include reinforcement structures configured to resist stretching, deformation, fraying, or wear over repeated use.
[0211] The latching components of an Example B configuration may be implemented using any suitable releasable coupling structures, including buttons, snaps, key-and-keyhole structures, hooking structures, clasping structures, magnets, and hybrid combinations thereof (FIGS. 15A-C). Any Example B arrangement shown in the drawings is provided by way of example only and is not limiting.Attachment & Detachment Sequences.
[0212] General Attachment & Detachment Sequence. Attachment of an interchangeable member to a base undergarment may be carried out by first moving the outer flap 7 to the open configuration so as to expose the opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12. The insert portion 14 of the interchangeable member may then be aligned with the insert-receiving channel 12 and inserted into the insert-receiving channel 12 through the opening region. After insertion, the insert portion 14 may be advanced and seated within the insert-receiving channel 12 such that the interface components are aligned at the engagement region 8.
[0213] Where latching components are present, attachment may further include engaging one or more latching-related components at the engagement region 8. Thereafter, where applicable, the outer flap 7 may be returned toward the inner flap 6 so that the modular attachment system transitions to the closed configuration and the insert portion 14 is covered and retained within the insert-receiving channel 12.
[0214] Detachment of the interchangeable member from the base undergarment may be carried out by first moving the outer flap 7 to the open configuration, where needed, to expose the opening region of the insert-receiving channel 12. Where latching components are present, detachment may further include disengaging the latching-related components at the engagement region 8. The insert portion 14 may then be withdrawn from the insert-receiving channel 12 through the opening region, thereby separating the interchangeable member from the base undergarment and returning the modular attachment system to a detached condition.
[0215] Representative Sequence: Lower Base Undergarment & Interchangeable Waistband Member (Example A). A representative attachment and detachment sequence for the hero embodiments of the lower base undergarment 2 and the interchangeable waistband member 1 in an Example A latching configuration is shown in FIGS. 14A-I.
