[0003] The present disclosure relates to a baby carrier, such as an adjustable carrier for carrying a baby, infant, or child on or against a wearer.BACKGROUND
[0004] Baby or child carriers have become an important tool used by caregivers to care for an infant, baby, or child in a safe, developmentally beneficial, and enjoyable manner for both the caregiver and child. The time a child spends in a carrier promotes interaction with the caregiver and surroundings, and fosters physical and psychological development by promoting a closeness between the child and caregiver (e.g., skin or near-skin contact). Because carriers are utilized by caregivers to free-up their attention (e.g., arms and hands) while caring for the child, carriers need to securely hold the child. In addition, carriers need to be comfortable allowing extended use of carrying a child.SUMMARY
[0005] An object of the present invention is to achieve a baby carrier that is easy to put on, remove, and adjust. Most carriers have a complicated system including a harness having shoulder straps and waist belt that are interconnected with a main body portion that forms a child carrying area for receiving the child. This typical construction often requires the infant to be positioned in the main body portion at the same time the caregiver fits into and adjusts the harness. This combined action can be difficult to accomplish quickly and comfortably. Additionally, or separately, adjustment of the harness (shoulder straps and / or waist belt) on the caregiver results in changes to the position or fit of the main body portion for the infant. Improvements in the way carriers are mounted onto caregivers, as well as in the ability to adjust the fit on the caregiver independently of the fit of the infant in the main body portion are desired.
[0006] The harness that mounts the carriers to a caregiver often require buckles that are accessible to the caregiver. These buckles are often difficult to operate with one hand, even if exposed for ease of operation. The exposed buckles may catch on other nearby items, and in some instances be uncomfortable if incidentally contacted by the caregiver. Improvements in the ease of operation of the buckles by the caregiver, and separately in reducing the incidental engagement and uncomfortable contact is needed.
[0007] Existing carriers may also include shade accessories that cover an infant's head while in the main body portion. These shade accessories are often separate from the carrier, and are often difficult to attach properly to the carrier for the intended purpose. Additionally, because they are separate from the carrier, they require stowage in a convenient location, and are easily misplaced. Improvements in the areas of storage, deployment, and / or attachment of shade accessories to baby carriers would be beneficial.

[0144] Described herein is a baby or child carrier or simply “carrier” offering improvements over, or at least an alternative to, existing solutions. For example, the carrier may include a vest-like harness for supporting a main body portion forming a child carrying area. The vest-like harness may include two panels that attach to corresponding weight-bearing supports (e.g., shoulder straps). The attachment of the panels to the weight bearing supports may make it easier for a person to put on the carrier, while also enabling an improved fit for different body shapes. The panels may move in relation to each other and thereby adapt to the body of the wearer. This facilitates that the same baby carrier can comfortably be worn by multiple persons, such as parents of different sizes. In addition, the panels may distribute the load of the child over a larger area of the wearer's torso, providing improved comfort for the wearer. Furthermore, the panels may increase safety for the child positioned in the baby carrier, since the panels create a closed loop with the main body portion configured to support the child positioned in the baby carrier, which in turn prevents the child from falling out of the baby carrier, e.g., in case of the waist belt buckle / fastener opens up or breaks due to misuse. In one example the panels overlap. In another example, the panels abut one another, or alternatively are positioned adjacent each other but spaced apart. The panels may be triangular or have a different shape. The panels may be formed of resilient material, for example a stretchable material, or may be made in a particular way, for example having a mesh structure, providing a comfortable fit for a variety of sizes and body shapes, creating a comfortable experience for most users.
[0145] The bottom edge of each panel may be attached to a different portion of a waist belt. For example, a first panel may attach to a first waist belt portion, and a second panel may attach to a second waist belt portion. The first and second waist belt portions may overlap when connected. The first and second waist belt portions may also be referred to as first and second end portions. The overlapping waist belt may open up to allow the wearer to put the carrier on like a vest. The overlap or “wrapping” of the waist belt may make it easier to put on the carrier, while also enabling a better fit for different body shapes. When securing the waist belt to the wearer, the inner waist belt portion may be positioned across the wearer's waist first, with the inner panel lying against the wearer's chest. The inner waist belt portion may be attached at its free end to an adjacent part of the outer waist belt portion (e.g., at one hip). Then, the outer waist belt portion is positioned across the wearer's waist and on top of the inner waist belt portion. The outer waist belt portion may be attached at its free end to an adjacent part of the inner waist belt portion (e.g., at the other hip). Alternatively, or additionally, the second end portion and the first end portion are not overlapping. In such an example, the second end portion and the first end portion may be releasably attached to each other, directly or via an additional part, such as the lumber support.

For example, buckles may be included at the ends of the waist belt, at connection points of the main body portion to the harness, or at other locations of the carrier. With reference to FIGS. 1-2, the carrier 100 includes a harness 104 and a main body portion 106. The harness 104 may secure the carrier 100 to the wearer, and may include a waist belt 110 and a pair of shoulder straps (e.g., a first shoulder strap 112 and a second shoulder strap 114). The waist belt 110 may wrap around the waist region of the wearer (e.g., at or above the wearer's hips), such as to support the weight of the child. The shoulder straps 112, 114 may secure the harness 104 to the wearer's shoulders, such as to support the weight of the child together with the waist belt 110. For example, the first shoulder strap 112 may extend around a first shoulder of the wearer, and the second shoulder strap 114 may extend around a second shoulder of the wearer.

For example, the adjustment straps 120, 122 may fit the carrier 100 to the wearer without impacting the child, such as having a tight fit of the wearer and a loose fit of the child, or vice-versa.
[0152] Additionally, or independently, the waist belt 110 may include one or more third adjustment straps 124 (e.g., a pair of adjustment straps 124) to adjust the waist belt 110 to the wearer as desired or needed. The use of the adjustment straps 124 aids in the fitting the harness to the wearer, and has little to no effect on the fit of the main body portion 106 with the child received therein. For comfort or additional support, the waist belt 110 may include a lumbar support 128, such as for positioning against the wearer's lumbar region when the child is carried in front of the wearer (e.g., front carry). In one example, the lumbar support 128 comprises a pad structure. In another example, the lumbar support 128 comprises a stiffening member having holes to create stability while also ensuring airflow. The waist belt 110 may include a similar structure. In some examples, the lumbar support 128 is attached to the waist belt 110 by slide buckles to allow its positioning along the length of the waist belt 110.

For example, the seat 136 may include a first seat panel 300 secured to the main body portion 106. The first seat panel 300 may include a first end 308 and a second end 310. The first end 308 may be fixed to the waist belt 110 or to the main body portion 106 at a position spaced from the waist belt 110. For example, the first end 308 may be fixed to the waist belt 110 along the entire width of the seat 136 and not adjustable at the waist belt 110. The second end 310 may selectively couple to the inner surface 296 of the main body portion 106, such as to adjust the seat's width, as described below. In some examples, the seat 136 includes a second seat panel 314 secured to the main body portion 106 (e.g., to define the seat 136 in combination with the first seat panel 300). [0194] FIGS. 9A, 9B and 10 illustrate an example leg strap 360 for adjusting a leg hole 362 of the carrier 100. When the main body portion 106 is coupled to the harness 104, leg holes 362 may be defined between the first and second flaps 148, 150, the seat 136, and the harness 104. The leg holes 362 may be oversized, such as to facilitate an initial positioning of the child within the carrier 100, to accommodate varying sizes of children, etc. With respect to a small child (e.g., an infant, a baby, or another smaller-sized child), it may be desirable to reduce the size of the leg holes 362. Referring to FIG. 10, the leg straps 360 may be stored when not in use. For instance, the harness 104 may include storage sleeves 372 through which the leg straps 360 are positioned for storage. In one example, these adjustments are made after the waist belt 110 is secured around the wearer as described above. In another example, the harness 104 is fully mounted onto a wearer's body prior to positioning the baby into the main body portion 106. This allows for an easier method of positioning the baby in the main body portion 106 because the wearer does not need to mount the harness 104 on the wearer while at the same time placing the baby in the main body portion 106, which can be challenging because it requires coordination and practice. In one example, the ramp 474 on the protrusion flange 470 is defined by a sloping thickness dimension that increases from a bottom end towards a top end varying in thickness to define the ramp 474. The lower end of the ramp 474 is adjacent the leading end (also the lower end) 462 of the protrusion 450, and the thickness of the ramp 474 at the leading end 462 is less than the gap 438 formed in the anchor 402. This facilitates that the protrusion 450 may be easily inserted into anchor slot 410 at the upper end of the anchor 402. As the protrusion 450 moves downwardly in the anchor 402, the thickness of the ramp 474 slopes to define a greater thickness entering the anchor 402. In one example, where the protrusion is fully seated in the anchor slot 410 of the anchor 402, the ramp 474 fills the gap 438 and engages both the base 416 and the lip 436 to create a firm fit of the top portion of the protrusion 450 within the anchor slot 410.

The shade accessory may also improve visibility of the child when the shade is in use, and / or may improve airflow for the comfort of the child when the shade is being worn. The shade accessory may include a shade member 540 coupled to the carrier 100, and movable from a stowed position to a deployed position. The shade member 540 may be fixedly attached to the carrier 100, or may removably attached to the carrier 100. The shade member 540 may selectively cover the child's head when positioned within the carrier 100, for example, to shield the child from the sun, weather, or other elements. The shade member 540 comprises an anchor point 544 and one or multiple releasable attachment points (e.g., defined by slits, loops, buttons, or fasteners). In other examples fewer than three releasable attachment points, more than three releasable attachment points, or any combination thereof in addition to the anchor point 544 may be utilized. The releasable attachment points may be spaced along the shade member 540 to secure the shade member 540 to various portions of the carrier 100 (e.g., the shoulder straps 112, 114, the main body portion 106, etc.), and allow for comfortable use for the infant and convenience for the user, as described below. The anchor point 544 may be a permanent connection to the carrier 100, or may be a releasable connection to the carrier 100. In an example, a permanent connection may reduce the likelihood of the shade member 540 being misplaced or lost. In another example, a releasable connection at anchor point 544 may aid in removing the shade member 540 for replacement or cleaning.

In other examples, the elastic member may be positioned additionally or separately at least partially along the length of the bottom edge 692. In another example, such as shown in FIG. 20B, the shade member 540 comprises one or more fabric seams or darts 694. The fabric seams or darts 694 may create a contoured, three-dimensional shape from the generally planar, flat extent of the material forming the shade member 540 to better fit the generally rounded shape of a baby's head to better stay in position when deployed.

Additionally, if the shade member 540 is deployed but not used to cover the infant's head, it may hang off to the side of the main body portion 106 and be less accessible to the infant. The opening 582 may be arranged to face away from a child positioned within the baby carrier 100, as shown in FIG. 21. To deploy the shade member 540, the shade member 540 may grasped through the opening 582 and pulled from the compartment 580. In some examples, the shade member 540 may provide additional functions. For example, FIG. 22 illustrates the shade member 540 arranged to define a covering 590 for the child, such as when the child is positioned in an outwardly facing position and the head support 140 is folded downwardly in a retracted position.

Indirect engagement includes where the lower section 704 supports the child where another portion of the carrier or other article (such a blanket, etc.) positioned between the lower section 704 and the child. For example, where the curve on each opposing lateral edges are “S” shaped, they form relatively wider or narrower parts of the lower section 704 along its length that change the support provided to the child based on its size and positioning. In some examples, a smaller child facing inwards may be seated close to the waist belt 100 at a relatively narrow location between the location defining width or width dimension X3 and the waist belt 100. A larger child facing inwards may be seated at a wider portion of the main body portion 106, such as closer to or at width X3. An even larger child facing inwards may be positioned at about width X3 or slightly beyond and may benefit from support from both the main body portion 106 and the seat panels 300, 314, which may be manually extended to provide support. The narrowest portion of the main body portion 106, at width or width dimension X2, may be used when the child is sufficiently large so as to be oriented in the facing-out position, for example, so that the child's legs can extend further forward. The narrow portion at width X2 does not interfere with the outwardly-facing child's legs. In some examples, the outwardly-facing child may be seated on the widest part (at width X3) of the main body portion 106, but the legs may have more room because they extend outwardly near the narrowest portion (at width X2). For example, the carrier may include a vest-like harness for supporting a main body portion forming a child carrying area. The vest-like harness may include two panels that attach to corresponding weight-bearing supports (e.g., shoulder straps). The attachment of the panels to the weight bearing supports may make it easier for a person to put on the carrier, while also enabling an improved fit for different body shapes. The panels may move in relation to each other and thereby adapt to the body of the wearer. Claims
1. A baby carrier comprising a harness and a main body portion, the harness being configured to secure the baby carrier to a wearer and the main body portion being configured to hold a child in the baby carrier, the harness comprising:a waist belt;a first shoulder strap extending from the waist belt; anda second shoulder strap extending from the waist belt,the main body portion being coupled to the waist belt and comprising a plurality of connectors configured to releasably secure the main body portion to the first shoulder strap and the second shoulder strap;wherein:the first shoulder strap comprises a first panel;the second shoulder strap comprises a second panel; andthe second panel is configured to overlap the first panel.
2. The baby carrier according to claim 1, wherein the first and second panels are configured to be positioned across the wearer's chest or the wearer's back.
3. The baby carrier according to claim 1, wherein the first panel and the second panel each have a triangular shape tapering in width with distance away from the waist belt.
4. The baby carrier according to claim 1, wherein:the first shoulder strap and the second shoulder strap each comprises a support strap configured to support a weight of a child carried by the baby carrier.
5. The baby carrier according to claim 1, wherein the first panel and the second panel each are formed of a stretchable fabric.
6. The baby carrier according to claim 1, wherein the waist belt comprises a first end portion and a second end portion configured for releasable securement to the first end portion.
7. The baby carrier according to claim 6, wherein the second end portion is configured to overlap the first end portion for releasable attachment to the first end portion.
8. The baby carrier according to claim 6, wherein:the first shoulder strap extends from the first end portion; andthe second shoulder strap extends from the second end portion.

The baby carrier according to claim 4, wherein:the waist belt comprises a first end portion and a second end portion configured for releasable securement to the first end portion;the first panel extends from the support strap of the first shoulder strap to a top edge of the first end portion; andthe second panel extends from the support strap of the second shoulder strap to a top edge of the second end portion.

The baby carrier according to claim 6, wherein the first panel has a first triangular shape with a first base extending along a first length of the first end portion and wherein the second panel has a second triangular shape with a second base extending along a second length of the second end portion.
11. The baby carrier according to claim 10, wherein the second base is configured to overlap the first base.
12. The baby carrier according to claim 6, wherein the main body portion is attached to either the first end portion or the second end portion.
13. The baby carrier according to claim 12, wherein the main body portion comprises a plurality of connectors configured to releasably secure the main body portion to the first shoulder strap and the second shoulder strap.

A baby carrier comprising a harness and a main body portion, the harness being configured to secure the baby carrier to a wearer and the main body portion being configured to hold a child in the baby carrier, the harness comprising:a waist belt having a connected state and a disconnected state;a first shoulder strap extending from the waist belt and configured to wrap around a first shoulder of a wearer; anda second shoulder strap extending from the waist belt and configured to wrap around a second shoulder of the wearer, wherein the second shoulder strap is configured to overlap the first shoulder strap when the waist belt is in the connected state, and wherein the first and second shoulder straps are configured to be positioned in a non-overlapping arrangement when the waist belt is in the disconnected state.
15. The baby carrier according to claim 14, wherein the first shoulder strap comprises a first panel, and wherein the second shoulder strap comprises a second panel configured to overlap the first panel.
16. The baby carrier according to claim 15, wherein the first panel and the second panel each have a triangular shape tapering in width with distance away from the waist belt.
17. The baby carrier according to claim 15, wherein the first panel and the second panel are formed of a stretchable fabric.
18. The baby carrier according to claim 15, wherein the first and second panels are configured to be positioned across a wearer's chest or the wearer's back.
19. The baby carrier according to claim 14, wherein the waist belt comprises a first end portion and a second end portion configured to overlap the first end portion for releasable attachment to the first end portion.

The baby carrier according to claim 19, further comprising:a first connector at an end of the first end portion, the first connector configured to engage a first side of the waist belt; anda second connector at an end of the second end portion, the second connector configured to engage a second side of the waist belt.
21. The baby carrier according to claim 20, wherein the first side or the second side is an inside of the waist belt.
22. The baby carrier according to claim 19, wherein the main body portion is coupled to the first end portion or the second end portion.

A baby carrier comprising a harness and a main body portion, the harness being configured to secure the baby carrier to a wearer and the main body portion being configured to hold a child in the baby carrier, the harness comprising:a waist belt;a first shoulder strap extending from the waist belt;a second shoulder strap extending from the waist belt;a first panel extending from the first shoulder strap to the waist belt; anda second panel extending from the second shoulder strap to the waist belt, wherein the second panel is configured to overlap the first panel at a position between a wearer and a child received in the baby carrier.
24. The baby carrier according to claim 23, wherein each panel of the first panel and the second panel:is configured to be positioned across the wearer's chest or a wearer's back; andhas a triangular shape tapering in width with distance away from the waist belt.
25. The baby carrier according to claim 23, wherein the waist belt comprises a first end portion and a second end portion configured for releasable securement to the first end portion.
26. The baby carrier according to claim 25, wherein the first panel extends from the first shoulder strap to a top edge of the first end portion, and wherein the second panel extends from the second shoulder strap to a top edge of the second end portion.
