Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 769,403, filed on Mar. 10, 2025, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference.FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] This invention relates to structural and aesthetic accessories for wall-mounted support brackets, including but not limited to curtain rod brackets.BACKGROUND

[0003] Wall-mounted brackets are commonly used to support curtain rods, enabling curtains to hang at a desired distance from the wall. A typical curtain rod assembly includes two or more brackets and a rod supported by these brackets. Brackets vary in both functionality and design, but one widely used type is fabricated from a metal plate bent at a 90-degree angle to form a vertical wall-mounting portion and a horizontal extender portion. The distal end of the extender is often curved to form a hook or cradle that supports the curtain rod. These brackets are typically secured to a wall or other mounting surface using screws or nails inserted through holes in the wall-mounting portion.

[0004] A common drawback of this bracket style is the visibility of the mounting screws. Exposed screw heads detract from the overall appearance of the window treatment, particularly when three brackets are used for longer rods. The intermediate bracket becomes especially noticeable when curtains are drawn aside, making the hardware visually prominent.

[0005] Another significant issue with this type of bracket is structural weakness at the elbow region, where the wall-mounting portion transitions into the extender. Because this region is formed by bending a metal plate, it may lack sufficient rigidity, causing the extender, rod, and curtains to sag under load, especially when supporting heavy drapery. Manufacturers attempt to address this by using thicker metal, adding reinforcing profiles, or incorporating auxiliary supports between the wall and extender, but these solutions increase cost, complexity, or visual bulk.

[0006] There remains a need for an accessory that both conceals the mounting hardware and reinforces the bracket structure without requiring redesign of the bracket itself. The present invention addresses these issues by providing a reinforcing cover that conceals the fasteners on the wall-mounting portion and simultaneously strengthens the elbow region by acting as an angled support between the wall and extender portions of the bracket.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] The invention provides a reinforcing cover designed for use with surface-mounted (wall, ceiling, window frame etc) support brackets, including curtain rod brackets formed from bent metal plate. The cover is configured to conceal the mounting fasteners on the wall-mounting (surface-mounting) portion of the bracket while simultaneously reinforcing the structural transition between the wall-mounting (surface-mounting) portion and the extender portion. The cover includes surfaces that engage corresponding edges or features of the bracket to create an angled support that increases rigidity and reduces sagging under load. In various embodiments, the cover may include alignment features such as pins, edges, or contours that cooperate with openings or cuts in the bracket to facilitate secure attachment. The reinforcing cover can be installed after the bracket is mounted and provides both aesthetic and structural benefits without requiring modification of the underlying bracket design.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0035] The embodiments of the invention are described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals identify corresponding elements throughout the views. The drawings illustrate representative examples of the reinforcing cover and its interaction with a surface-mounted support bracket. The embodiments described herein are provided for purposes of explanation and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention.Overview of the Bracket

[0036] A typical surface-mounted curtain rod bracket includes a generally vertical surface-mounting portion configured to be secured to a wall, ceiling, window frame, or other mounting surface using screws, nails, or similar fasteners. Extending from the upper region of the surface-mounting portion is an extender portion that projects outward to support a curtain rod. The extender portion may terminate in a curved hook, cradle, or other rod-supporting structure. In many common designs, the bracket is formed from a bent metal plate, creating an elbow region where the surface-mounting portion transitions into the extender portion. This elbow region may be susceptible to bending or deformation under load.

[0037] In some bracket designs, the surface-mounting portion includes one or more cuts, slots, or edges that define structural boundaries or aesthetic features. These features may also serve as engagement points for accessories such as the reinforcing cover described herein.Overview of the Reinforcing Cover

[0038] The reinforcing cover is a cap-like component configured to be installed over at least a portion of the surface-mounting portion of the bracket. The cover includes a front wall and two side walls that extend rearward from the front wall. In many embodiments, the side walls are generally triangular, with a lower apex configured to rest near the lower end of the surface-mounting portion of the bracket and an upper base configured to engage the extender portion. When installed, the cover conceals the mounting fasteners and provides structural reinforcement to the elbow region by forming an angled support between the surface-mounting portion and the extender portion.

[0039] The cover may include one or more engagement features that cooperate with corresponding features on the bracket to facilitate alignment and secure attachment. These engagement features may include edges, contours, tabs, snap-fit elements, friction-fit surfaces, or pins.

[0040] Although certain embodiments illustrate triangular side walls, the reinforcing cover may include side walls of any geometry capable of transferring load between the surface-mounting portion and the extender portion, including curved, arcuate, trapezoidal, polygonal, or other load-transferring shapes configured to reinforce the transition region.Primary Embodiment

[0041] In one embodiment, the reinforcing cover includes a front wall configured to overlay the surface-mounting portion of the bracket and two triangular side walls extending rearward from the front wall. The lower apex of each side wall is shaped to rest against the lower region of the surface-mounting portion, while the upper base of each side wall is shaped to engage the underside or side edges of the extender portion. This geometry forms an angled support that increases rigidity at the elbow region.

[0042] The surface-mounting portion of the bracket may include cuts or edges that align with the edges of the cover. When the cover is installed, these aligned edges create a flush interface between the back of the cover and the front of the bracket, improving stability and appearance.

[0043] In some embodiments, the extender portion includes a small opening, and the reinforcing cover includes a corresponding pin extending from one of its edges. The pin is configured to enter the opening during installation, providing alignment and additional retention. The lower edges of the cover may be rounded or chamfered to facilitate sliding engagement with the bracket.Optional Pin and Alternative Attachment Mechanisms

[0044] The pin described above is optional. In other embodiments, the reinforcing cover is formed without a pin and instead relies on one or more of the following attachment mechanisms:

[0045] engagement of the sidewall edges with cuts or edges in the bracket

[0046] friction-fit between the cover and the bracket surfaces

[0047] snap-fit tabs molded into the cover

[0048] resilient deformation of the cover during installation

[0049] interference-fit between the cover and the extender portion

[0050] These alternative mechanisms allow the cover to be manufactured from a variety of materials and used with brackets that do not include an opening for a pin.Installation Process

[0051] To install the reinforcing cover, the bracket is first mounted to the desired surface using screws, nails, or other fasteners. Once the bracket is secured, the cover is positioned near the bracket with its lower apexes aligned with the lower region of the surface-mounting portion.

[0052] In embodiments including a pin, installation involves inserting the pin into the corresponding opening in the extender portion. After the pin is engaged, the cover is pressed toward the surface-mounting portion until the edges of the cover align with and seat against the cuts or edges of the bracket.

[0053] In embodiments without a pin, installation involves aligning the cover using its engagement edges or snap-fit features and pressing the cover into place until it seats securely against the bracket.

[0054] To remove the cover, the installation steps are reversed.Alternative Embodiments

[0055] The reinforcing cover may take a variety of forms, including but not limited to:

[0056] covers with dual pins or multiple alignment features

[0057] covers with no pins and only snap-fit or friction-fit engagement

[0058] covers with curved, trapezoidal, or polygonal side walls

[0059] covers configured for brackets with adjustable extender portions

[0060] covers with extended front walls to conceal larger mounting areas

[0061] covers with internal ribs or gussets for increased reinforcement

[0062] covers configured for brackets made from materials other than metal

[0063] The cover may also be adapted for use with support brackets in applications other than curtain rods, including shelving brackets, handrail brackets, or other surface-mounted support structures.Materials and Manufacturing

[0064] The reinforcing cover may be manufactured from a variety of materials, including plastics, metals, composites, or combinations thereof. Suitable manufacturing methods include injection molding, stamping, casting, machining, or additive manufacturing. The choice of material and manufacturing method may depend on the desired rigidity, appearance, cost, and compatibility with the bracket design.Variations

[0065] The embodiments described herein are illustrative and not limiting. Variations in shape, size, attachment mechanisms, and materials may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
