[0006] The disclosure relates to sponge and more particularly pertains to a new sponge for more efficiently cleaning a surface.(2) Description of Related Art Including Information Disclosed Under 37 CFR 1.97 and 1.98
[0007] The prior art relates to sponges. Sponges are a very common tool for cleaning counters, tables, dishes, and other objects. Sponges are a preferred tool for these tasks because sponges can absorb water and cleaning solution, then release that water and cleaning solution onto the object being cleaned. Some sponges have a rough side, which is mildly abrasive, for scrubbing the objects, and a soft side, for absorbing more of the water and cleaning solution. However, sponges are often difficult to clean, particularly as the abrasive material of the rough side deteriorates and the sponge itself becomes more saturated with debris from the objects being cleaned. The prior art also discloses rags, such as washcloths and paper towels. Rags such as washcloths are often easier to clean than sponges. Rags such as paper towels are often less expensive than sponges and are typically designed for disposal after a single use. There is a need in the art for a device that combines the absorbency of a sponge with the replaceability of a rag.(h) BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] An embodiment of the disclosure meets the needs presented above by generally comprising a housing. A sponge being coupled to the housing that includes a plurality of members that are pivotable between an open position and a closed position. The plurality of members define a void designed to receive a rag when the plurality of members are in the open position. The plurality of members are designed to secure the rag to the sponge while the plurality of members are in the closed position. A trigger is coupled to the sponge. The trigger pivots the plurality of members of the sponge between the open position and the closed position. An actuator is in contact with the trigger wherein manipulation of the actuator actuates the trigger to pivot the plurality of members of the sponge between the open position and the closed position.
[0009] There has thus been outlined, rather broadly, the more important features of the disclosure in order that the detailed description thereof that follows may be better understood, and in order that the present contribution to the art may be better appreciated. There are additional features of the disclosure that will be described hereinafter and which will form the subject matter of the claims appended hereto.
[0010] The objects of the disclosure, along with the various features of novelty which characterize the disclosure, are pointed out with particularity in the claims annexed to and forming a part of this disclosure.(i) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SEVERAL VIEWS OF THE DRAWING(S)

[0025] With reference now to the drawings, and in particular to FIGS. 1 through 6 thereof, a new sponge embodying the principles and concepts of an embodiment of the disclosure and generally designated by the reference numeral 10 will be described.
[0026] As best illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 6, the cleaning assembly 10 generally comprises a housing 12 that has an interior space 14. The housing 12 may have a front wall 16, a rear wall 18, and a peripheral wall 20 that is coupled to and extends between the front wall 16 and the rear wall 18 to define the interior space 14. The front wall 16 may be planar.
[0027] A sponge 22 is coupled to the housing 12 wherein the housing 12 is configured to facilitate cleaning a surface with the sponge 22. The sponge 22 may have a soft side 24 and an abrasive side 26. The soft side 24 may face inwardly toward the housing 12 and the abrasive side 26 may face outwardly from the housing 12. In such embodiments, the abrasive side 26 is generally configured to facilitate removal of debris from the surface and the soft side 24 is generally configured to facilitate fluid absorption by the sponge 22. The sponge 22 may be positioned proximate to the front wall 16 of the housing 12.
[0028] The sponge 22 includes a plurality of members 28 that are pivotably coupled to the housing 12. More specifically, the plurality of members 28 are pivotable between an open position 30 and a closed position 32. For example, the plurality of members 28 may be pivoted forwardly relative to the housing 12 and outwardly relative to adjacent members of the plurality of members 28 when the plurality of members 28 are in the open position 30. While in the open position 30, the plurality of members 28 define a void 34 that is positioned between the plurality of members 28. The void 34 is configured to receive a rag 36 to facilitate the sponge 22 in cleaning the surface. Examples of the rag 36 include, but are not limited to, a paper towel, a washcloth, or a towel. The plurality of members 28 may physically contact adjacent members of the plurality of members 28 when the plurality of members 28 are in the closed position 32. In other words, the plurality of members 28 are configured to secure the rag 36 to the sponge 22 while the plurality of members 28 are in the closed position 32.
[0029] A handle 38 may be coupled to the housing 12 to facilitate a user 72 in holding the housing 12 while the user 72 is cleaning the surface. The handle 38 may be positioned proximate to the rear wall 18 of the housing 12 to facilitate the user 72 in manipulating the sponge 22 on the surface while the user 72 is gripping the handle 38. The handle 38 may extend downwardly from the peripheral wall 20 of the housing 12. For example, the handle 38 may be perpendicular to the housing 12.
[0030] A trigger 40 is operably coupled to the sponge 22 and the housing 12. The trigger 40 pivots the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 between the open position 30 and the closed position 32. For example, an arm 42 may be movably positioned within the interior space 14 of the housing 12. The arm 42 may be movable forwardly toward the front wall 16 and backwardly away from the front wall 16 of the housing 12. The arm 42 may be parallel to an axis extending between the front wall 16 and the rear wall 18 of the housing 12.
[0031] A projection 44 may be coupled to the arm 42. When the arm 42 moves forwardly toward the front wall 16, the projection 44 may move forwardly relative to the front wall 16. Conversely, the projection 44 may move backwardly relative to the front wall 16 when the arm 42 moves backwardly away from the front wall 16. The projection 44 may include a neck 46 that extends through the front wall 16 of the housing 12. A head 48 may be coupled to the neck 46 distally to the arm 42.
[0032] A fin 50 may be coupled to the projection 44. In some embodiments, the fin 50 may also be coupled to the arm 42. Forward movement of the projection 44 may urge the fin 50 forwardly relative to the front wall 16 of the housing 12. The fin 50 may be spaced from the head 48 of the projection 44. For example, the fin 50 may extend through the projection 44 toward the sponge 22 wherein the fin 50 is positioned between the front wall 16 of the housing 12 and the sponge 22.
[0033] A plurality of plates 52 may be pivotably coupled to the fin 50. The plurality of plates 52 may be pivotable outwardly from the fin 50 to urge the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 into the open position 30. For example, the plurality of plates 52 may be angled to extend upwardly from the fin 50 and outwardly relative to each other when the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 are in the open position 30. Conversely, the plurality of plates 52 may be pivotable inwardly toward the fin 50 to urge the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 into the closed position 32. For example, the plurality of plates 52 may be parallel to the front wall 16 of the housing 12 when the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 are in the closed position 32. Each plate of the plurality of plates 52 may be rigid wherein the plurality of plates 52 reinforce the soft side 24 of each respective member of the plurality of members 28, facilitating the plurality of members 28 in pivoting between the open position 30 and the closed position 32 and inhibiting damage to the soft side 24 of the sponge 22 from pressure exerted by the trigger 40.
[0034] As shown in FIG. 1-5, a plurality of hooks 68 may pivotably couple the plurality of plates 52 to the fin 50. Each hook of the plurality of hooks 68 is generally coupled to a respective plate of the plurality of plates 52. The plurality of hooks 68 may extend backwardly from the fin 50 toward the head 48 of the projection 44 wherein forward movement of the projection 44 pivots the plurality of hooks 68 downwardly and inwardly to physically contact the fin 50. Downward and inward movement of the plurality of hooks 68 urges the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 into the open position 30. Conversely, backward movement of the projection 44 may pivot the plurality of hooks 68 upwardly and outwardly to away from the fin 50, urging the plurality of members 28 into the closed position 32.
[0035] As shown in FIG. 6-9, a plurality of beams 70 may be coupled to the head 48 of the projection 44. Forward movement of the head 48 of the projection 44 may urgee the plurality of beams 70 forwardly relative to the front wall 16 of the housing 12. Each beam of the plurality of beams 70 may be coupled to a respective plate of the plurality of plates 52 wherein each beam of the plurality of beams 70 extends through the fin 50 to the respective plate of the plurality of plates 52. Forward movement of the plurality of beams 70 may therefore pivot the plurality of plates 52 outwardly relative to the fin 50 to pivot the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 into the open position 30. Backward movement of the plurality of beams 70 may pivot the plurality of plates 52 inwardly relative to the fin 50 to pivot the plurality of members 28 into the closed position 32.
[0036] An actuator 54 may be coupled to the handle 38, as shown in the Figures. However, alternative embodiments having the actuator 54 coupled to the housing 12 are also contemplated. The actuator 54 is generally in contact with the arm 42 of the trigger 40 wherein manipulation of the actuator 54 actuates the trigger 40 to pivot the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 between the open position 30 and the closed position 32.
[0037] For example, a leg 56 may be positioned within the interior space 14 of the housing 12. The leg 56 may be selectively pivotable toward the front wall 16 within the interior space 14 of the housing 12. Generally, the leg 56 is in physical contact with the arm 42 wherein the leg 56 urges the arm 42 forward toward the front wall 16 when the leg 56 is pivoted toward the front wall 16. The leg 56 may extend downwardly through the interior space 14 of the housing 12 into the handle 38.
[0038] A foot 58 may be movably coupled to the handle 38 wherein the foot 58 is selectively movable inwardly toward the handle 38 and outwardly from the handle 38. The foot 58 is statically coupled to the leg 56 wherein movement of the foot 58 inwardly toward the handle 38 pivots the leg 56 forwardly toward the front wall 16 of the housing 12 to urge the arm 42 of the trigger 40 forwardly. The foot 58 may extend outwardly through the handle 38 wherein the foot 58 is configured to be accessible to the user 72 while the user 72 is holding the handle 38.
[0039] A motor 60 may be coupled to the fin 50 of the trigger 40. The motor 60 is actuatable to rotate the fin 50. Rotation of the fin 50 rotates the sponge 22, which is configured to facilitate the user 72 in cleaning the surface. The motor 60 may be positioned within the interior space 14 of the housing 12.
[0040] A processor 62 may be in communication with the motor 60. The processor 62 actuates the motor 60. The processor 62 is positioned within the interior space 14 of the housing 12 wherein the processor 62 is electrically coupled to the motor 60.
[0041] A toggle 64 may be in communication with the processor 62. The toggle 64 is generally manipulatable to signal the processor 62 to actuate the motor 60. For example, the toggle 64 is positioned on the housing 12 proximate to the handle 38 wherein the toggle 64 is configured for manipulation while the user 72 is holding the handle 38. As shown in the Figures, the toggle 64 may be a button, although switches and other alternative embodiments are also contemplated.
[0042] A power source 66 may be electrically coupled to the processor 62. The power source 66 is configured to transfer power to each of the processor 62 and the motor 60. As shown in the Figures, the power source 66 may be positioned within the interior space 14 of the housing 12. For example, the power source 66 may be a battery. The battery may be rechargeable.
[0043] In use, the user 72 can press inwardly on the foot 58 of the actuator 54 to urge the arm 42 of the trigger 40 forwardly and pivot the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 into the open position 30. The rag 36 can be positioned within the void 34 between the plurality of members 28. The user 72 can then release the foot 58, pivoting the leg 56 backwardly away from the arm 42 and releasing the arm 42 such that the arm 42 can slide backwardly to pivot the plurality of members 28 of the sponge 22 into the closed position 32. While in the closed position 32, the plurality of members 28 grip the rag 36. The sponge 22 can transfer fluids, such as water and cleaning solutions, onto the rag 36. The user 72 can also manipulate the toggle 64 to turn the motor 60 on and rotate the sponge 22, and thus the rag 36.
