TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] This application is directed, in general, to devices for carrying items, and more specifically, to devices and assemblies for retaining items.BACKGROUND
[0002] The following discussion of the background is intended to facilitate an understanding of the present disclosure only. It should be appreciated that the discussion is not an acknowledgement or admission that any of the material referred to was part of the common general knowledge at the priority date of the application.Devices for carrying or attaching items to bags, backpacks or other objects can leave a user's hands free for other purposes. And sometimes, items to be carried are wet, dirty, or too bulky to be placed inside a bag, so it is desirable to attach these types of items to the outside of the bag. There are several different instances where it is desirable to attach one item to another. Having a retention system capable of accommodating items of different sizes, shapes, and textures and that is quick to retain and release said items with minimal manipulation is desirable.SUMMARY
[0003] According to an illustrative embodiment, a retention system for releasably holding a first item within proximity to a second item includes a body formed of an elastomeric material having a uniform thickness of less than 5 millimeters. A cutout is formed within the body for receiving the first item, which is to be retained. The cutout includes a plurality of flaps spaced apart from each other, such that the cutout, including each of the plurality of flaps, elastically stretches to receive the first item and thereafter holds the first item at least in part with compression. The body further includes a first tab extending outward from the body with the first tab having a hole formed therein. A second tab extends outward from the body in an opposite direction from the first tab. The retention system further includes a releasable coupler for coupling the body to the second item.
[0004] According to another illustrative embodiment, a retention system for releasably holding a first item within proximity to a second item includes a body formed of an elastomeric material, wherein the body is formed with an inboard cutout for receiving the first item, which is to be retained. The cutout is operable to elastically stretch to receive the first item and thereafter holds the first item at least in part with compression. The system further includes a tether having a first end and a second end, wherein the first end of the tether is coupled to the body. The system also includes a releasable coupler that is coupled at a second end of the tether, wherein the releasable coupler is for coupling to the second item.
[0005] According to yet another illustrative embodiment, an assembly for holding a first item proximate to a second item includes a tether having a first end and a second end, wherein the tether has a longitudinal length greater than 7.5 centimeters. The assembly further includes a body formed from elastomeric material, wherein the body has a width greater than five centimeters, and wherein the first end of the tether is coupled to the body. The assembly further includes a fastening device coupled to the second end of the tether and that is operable to releasably couple to objects, wherein the body comprises an elastomer having an inboard opening that stretches to receive the first item and hold the first item in compression.
[0006] Other embodiments are presented further below.DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
