Description

RELATED APPLICATION

[0001] This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional Application No. 63 / 566,887, filed Mar. 18, 2024, entitled “Game and Apparatus for Playing Pool”, the entire contents of each of which are herein incorporated by reference.FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention pertains to a game, generally a method and apparatus for playing a new pool, or billiard game, and more particularly, a pool table game wherein a player must sink each target object ball into a different pocket, thereby limiting player pocket selection and requiring unique shots, and wherein scoring tokens have an integral role in game play.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Pool table games are enjoyed by many. On home tables, family gatherings can include friendly competitions with players spanning generations. At pool halls and venues, organized leagues can bring people together to compete and socialize, and at neighborhood taverns, a pool table can become a hangout for regulars who enjoy some competitive activity when meeting up to have a drink. With some variations in tables, pool table games are enjoyed worldwide. And whether a European pool table, an English pool table, a Snooker table, or an American pool table, most usually have six pockets.

[0004] The most popular games in the United States are likely eight-ball and nine-ball. In each of those games, the game play rules are focused on the object balls and not the pockets. Eight-ball uses fifteen object balls and breaks starting from a triangular rack. Players' assigned object balls are designated by the stripe or solid character of the ball, except for the solid eight ball, which is not assigned. In general, the first player to sink all of its assigned object balls into any pocket, but without sinking the eight ball until the very last shot, is the winner. Thus eight-ball has an instant elimination feature. Nine-ball uses nine object balls and breaks starting from a diamond shape rack. Players are not assigned object balls but take turns and each must hit the lowest numerical object ball on the table first, advancing sequentially, and pocketing the object balls into any pocket, including those that are pocketed from secondary impact by the lowest numerical object ball. This leads to an instant win feature because the first player to sink the nine ball is the winner.

[0005] In these very fun and popular games, the balls can be pocketed in any pocket at any time. At least theoretically, all of the balls could sink into the same pocket in either game. There is no challenge presented as to the use of the pockets, so players remain generally free to select to shoot for the pocket that they find most favorable to the target object ball.

[0006] There is a need for a game and apparatus for playing pool, wherein the game play challenges a player to shoot a target object ball at a less than favorable pocket, wherein a player must sink each object ball into a different pocket, thereby limiting player pocket selection and requiring strategically unique shots.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] Briefly described, in a preferred embodiment, the present invention overcomes the above-mentioned limitations and meets the need by providing a game and apparatus for a game of pool that includes a pocket-related strategic component that can present new challenges to players as they shoot at a target object ball, wherein a player must sink each target object ball into a different pocket, thereby limiting player pocket selection and requiring unique shots, and wherein scoring tokens have an integral role in game play.

[0008] According to its major aspects and broadly stated, in its preferred form, the present invention is a pool game played with twelve object balls and one cue ball, wherein the object balls are preferably racked in the shape of a rocket, wherein the players' target object balls are preferably designated by the stripe or solid character of the ball, wherein to sink a target object ball the shooting player must not have previously pocketed a ball in that same pocket, and wherein the first player to sink all six assigned object balls, one into each of six pool table pockets, and preferably also with proper scoring, is the winner.

[0009] More specifically, the present invention in its preferred form is a method and apparatus for a game of pool comprising twelve balls racked in a specified arrangement, wherein the balls are divided equally amongst two teams, wherein each pocket may only accept one team ball, wherein a scoring token for each team is positioned near each pocket, and wherein a team must collect its scoring token after sinking a target ball into a new pocket and before taking its next shot or the score is lost and the pocketed ball must be spotted.

[0010] The preferred specified arrangement for the racked balls is in the shape of a rocket, preferably through use of a rocket shape rack. In an alternate embodiment, the specified arrangement for the racked balls is in the shape of an arrowhead or Christmas tree. The preferred token, or scoring marker positioning is for each of the two team's respective tokens to be placed on the pool table rail on opposing sides of each pocket, wherein upon sinking a ball into a new pocket, that team must remove its token from beside that pocket and place the token in the scoring lane, preferably on the pool table rail at the foot of the pool table, wherein the number of tokens in the scoring lane represents that team's score, and wherein the first team to have six tokens in the scoring lane wins the game.

[0011] Thus, a feature and advantage of the present invention is that it offers a new pool game and apparatus which introduces new shot challenges.

[0012] Another feature and advantage of the present invention is that it can be played on most pool tables, worldwide.

[0013] Another feature and advantage of the present invention is that it offers a new pool game with unique racked ball layout shapes.

[0014] Another feature and advantage of the present invention is that it offers a new pool game and apparatus with uniquely shaped ball racks.

[0015] Another feature and advantage of the present invention is that it offers a new pool game and apparatus with a pocket success tracking system that uses markers to indicate team status as to each pocket.

[0016] Yet another feature and advantage of the present invention is that it offers a new pool game and apparatus that uses markers for scoring and as second means for visually observing game status apart from the object balls.

[0017] Yet another feature and advantage of the present invention is that it offers a new pool game and apparatus that uses markers for scoring, and wherein the scoring markers have an integral role in game play.

[0018] These and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent to one skilled in the art from the following description and claims when read in light of the accompanying drawings.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0023] In describing the preferred and alternate embodiments of the present invention, as illustrated in the figures and / or described herein, specific terminology is employed for the sake of clarity. The invention is not intended to be limited to the specific terminology so selected, and it is to be understood that each specific element includes all technical equivalents that operate in a similar manner to accomplish similar functions.

[0024] A new game is described, preferably for play on a traditional pool table 70 as depicted in FIG. 3, and using a traditional set of pool balls but instead of using all fifteen balls, only twelve balls are used. The present invention in the preferred embodiment is a method and apparatus for a pool game played with twelve object balls and one cue ball, wherein at the start of the game, the object balls are preferably racked in a rocket shape 30 as depicted in FIG. 1, for the ball break, preferably through use of rocket rack 100. Also at the start of the game, preferably, two sets of tokens 20A-20F and 22A-22F, and with one set designated for each Player, are preferably placed on the rail 72 of pool table 70, with one token preferably placed at each pocket 74A-74F on behalf of each Player, such that each Player begins with six tokens 20A-20F or 22A-22F around the pool table, one token at each pocket. As shown in FIG. 3, preferably each Player's token is placed on the opposing side of the pocket from the other Player's token. In each case, the total preferred token set for a given game includes a total of twelve tokens, six for each Player.

[0025] The twelve object balls that are racked are preferably selected from a standard set of billiard balls to exclude the seven, eight, and nine balls. During preferred game play, each player or team of players (collectively, “Player”) has six target balls designated from the twelve object balls and must sink one of said Player's target balls in each of the six pockets 74A-74F on the pool table 70. The designation of each Player's target balls occurs preferably during the early rounds of play, with the first opportunity for designation occurring preferably during the breaking Player's turn.

[0026] The Player's preferably lag to see who breaks. In the preferred lag, each Player uses a standard cue stick to shoot a ball from one end of the table to the other end and back, with the Player closest to the rail winning the lag and breaking. In another embodiment, each lag must hit the bumper first. In another embodiment, each lag may not hit the bumper at all. The Players may alternately select the breaking Player by any reasonable means of their choice.

[0027] At the break, if none of the object balls nor the cue ball go into any pocket 74A-74F, it is the non-breaking Player's turn. However, if a single object ball goes into a pocket, in preferred embodiment, the character of that ball, as to whether it is solid or stripe, becomes the assigned target ball grouping for that Player. The preferred game play challenge is thus the classic solid versus stripes, with each Player designated either six striped object balls or six solid object balls and as that Player's target balls.

[0028] During preferred game play, when a Player first sinks one of that Player's target balls into a particular pocket 74A-74F, that Player must pick up that Player's corresponding token 20A-20F or 22A-22F from the rail 72 by that pocket before taking another shot. In the preferred game play, if that Player fails to pick up that Player's token from that pocket and place it in the scoring lane 78 before taking another shot, the target ball that was sunk into that pocket where the token wasn't picked up preferably must come back out to the spot 76, and the token preferably must remain for that Player at that pocket. Preferably, then, the pocket initially won is thus lost and has to be won again.

[0029] In the preferred game, scoring lane 78 is preferably on rail 72 of pool table 70, and for each Player shot, upon sinking a target ball into a new pocket, that Player preferably must remove that Player's token from beside that pocket and place the token in the scoring lane 78, preferably on the rail 72 at the foot 79 of the pool table 70, wherein the number of tokens in the scoring lane 78 preferably represents that Player's score, and wherein the game 10 is over when one Player has collected all six tokens 20A-20F or 22A-22F to the scoring lane 78, and that Player wins.

[0030] After the break and after each Player has been designated either six striped object balls or six solid object balls, the Player that sunk the first single object ball goes again. If no target ball for that Player goes into a remaining pocket, the next Player has a turn, and so on. Thus, after the break and during game play, notwithstanding any object balls that may have already been sunk during the break, the main action of the game 10 involves each Player having a total of six target balls to sink, one each of 20A-20F or 22A-22F respectively into one of six pockets 74A-74F, and being first to do that and to have no tokens by any pockets 74A-74F for the win.

[0031] Where each Player is a team of players, the team will preferably rotate within itself each time a complete turn ends and the other Player has a turn. That is, when multiple shots may occur within a given turn and where each Player is a team of players, rotating of players within the team within a given turn is preferably not permitted unless all Players on all teams agree in advance, preferably before the break.

[0032] If a Player sinks a ball from the other Player's designated ball grouping, more specifically one of the other Player's target balls into a pocket the other Player has not yet won, the shooting Player's turn is preferably over and the other Player can and preferably must pick up the token from the now won pocket and place the token on the scoring lane 78. Preferably, the placement of the token on the scoring lane 78 by the other Player prior to the other Player taking that Player's next shot is required or the win is forfeited, the token remains at the pocket, and the target ball is placed on the spot 76.

[0033] If a Player sinks one of their own target balls into a pocket already won by that Player, preferably indicated by the lack of that Player's token being positioned by the pocket, the Player's turn is preferably over and the ball preferably comes back out to the spot 76. If a Player sinks more than one of their own target balls, any target ball that goes into a pocket not yet won by that Player can remain, the token collected to the scoring lane, and only the target ball(s) that go into a pocket that was already won by that Player come back out to the spot 76. This same process occurs if a Player sinks more than one object ball and one of the sunk belongs to, or is designated to the other Player. Both Players win their pockets and collect their tokens, so long as not already won. In this scenario, only balls in those pockets already won come back to the spot 76. In any case, in the preferred embodiment, when a Player shoots its own target ball into a pocket, that Player had already won or when a Player shoots the other Player's target ball into any pocket, the shooting Player's turn is preferably over.

[0034] A Player must preferably first strike one of that Player's target balls with the cue ball before striking any other ball or that is a foul, and any ball of that Player's so pocketed from a foul preferably has to come back out to the spot 76. A target ball of the other Player pocketed in such circumstances, from a foul by the first Player, is won by that other Player, who can and preferably must collect the token to the scoring lane 78. Preferably, in each such instance of scoring from a foul shot, the placement of the token on the scoring lane 78 by the other Player prior to the other Player taking that Player's next shot is required or the win is forfeited, the token remains at the pocket, and the target ball is placed on the spot 76. If a Player scratches, that Player's turn is over and the next Player preferably takes the cue ball in the kitchen. If a Player scratches after first hitting the other Player's ball (committing a foul), the next Player preferably takes the cue ball in hand. If a Player's own target ball was pocketed but the Player scratches, the target ball comes back out to the spot 76. If a Player pockets the other Player's ball, but scratches, the turn is over but the other Player has won the pocket and can and preferably must pick up the token and place in the scoring lane 78 before taking the next shot or the won pocket will be preferably forfeited.

[0035] In the preferred embodiment, if two or more object balls are sunk during the break from different groupings, for example, both a stripe and a solid or both a low and a high number, the break Player shoots again and if another ball is sunk, the grouping of the last ball is the grouping assigned to that Player. The break Player then can and preferably must remove the respective tokens from the pockets into which that Player's now-assigned ball grouping were sunk. The other ball(s) that were sunk on the break preferably come back out to the spot. It is appreciated that in an alternate embodiment, the other ball(s) that were sunk on the break could be assigned and attributed to the other Player as wins as to the respective pocket(s).

[0036] In the preferred embodiment, Players do not need to call their shots or pockets. In an alternate embodiment, this shot or pocket calling could be an adopted rule to enhance challenge.

[0037] In another embodiment, and when the ball groupings are by number, such as balls one through six and balls seven through twelve rather than solids and stripes, to enhance challenge, each Player can be required to sink their ball grouping in numerical order. The Player with 1-6 therefore must first sink the 1 ball into a first pocket, then the 2 ball into a different pocket, and so on, with each ball sequentially in order and sunk into a pocket not previously used by that Player.

[0038] Similarly, in another embodiment, and also to further enhance challenge, the pockets could be assigned a designated order and each Player can be required to sink their ball grouping in the pockets according to the pockets designated order.

[0039] Yet another enhanced challenge embodiment can be when the pockets have a designated order and the balls are also required to be sunk in numerical order. In this variation, ball one and ball seven could only be sunk in designated pocket one, ball two and ball eight could only be sunk in designated pocket two, and so on.

[0040] In another embodiment, the game could be played in the style of Horse, such that the pockets would not be sequentially ordered, but each Player must sink its next ball into the pocket just won by the other Player before that Player can win another pocket. In such embodiment, any other pocketed ball, e.g. not pocketed in the pocket just won by the other Player, would have to come back out to the spot 76.

[0041] In an alternate embodiment, when the object balls are preferably selected from a traditional set of pool balls, other balls could be excluded instead of the seven, eight, and nine balls, so long as six solids and six stripes preferably remain.

[0042] In another embodiment that requires more detailed examination of the object balls by a Player for identification of that Player's target balls during play, the Players aren't designated as solids and stripes. Instead, as an alternate variation of the game, the twelve balls racked are those with numbers one through twelve, and the Players are designated by low or high numbers, as one through six and seven through twelve.

[0043] In another embodiment, if an object ball goes in on the break, no Player has claim to that ball grouping until such Player sinks another of that ball grouping. If the original break Player that sunk the first object ball on break sinks a second object ball of the same ball grouping, that ball grouping becomes the assigned or designated or won ball grouping for that Player. When this occurs, as more fully described hereinabove, that Player must remove that Player's marker, or token, from proximate the pocket of the initially sunk break ball and from the pocket of the second ball from the same grouping, placing the tokens in the designated scoring position or score board rail, scoring lane. That is, as to the tokens, in one embodiment of the break rules, no token is taken up by the break Player even if a ball goes in on the break, until and unless the break Player sinks a second of the same ball category as the pocketed break ball and in a different pocket than the pocketed break ball. In that case, the break Player has won both pockets and can (and must) remove the respective tokens and place them in the scoring lane 78, shown in its preferred location.

[0044] In such embodiment, if in the second shot, the break Player doesn't sink a ball, it's the second Player's turn. Just like the break Player, if the second Player sinks a second of the same ball category as the pocketed break ball, the second Player has won both pockets and can (and must) remove the respective tokens and place them in the scoring lane. If second Player doesn't sink a ball, it's the next Player's turn, and so on, until a Player sinks a ball.

[0045] Further to such embodiment, if in the second shot, the break Player sinks a ball from a different ball category than the break-pocketed ball, and irrespective of the pockets, the second ball category is the ball category assigned to the break Player, who can and must pick up the token from the winning pocket and place in the scoring lane before taking next shot. In another variation, the break-pocketed ball and token remain at the pocket until the other Player has a turn and sinks a ball from the same category or character, e.g. stripes or solids, low number or high, as the break-pocketed ball, then that Player has won both pockets and must pick up both tokens and place in the scoring lane 78.

[0046] In another alternative, if the break Player sinks a second ball from a different grouping than the break-pocketed ball, rather than other Player benefitting from the break, the break pocketed ball can come back out to the spot 76.

[0047] In one embodiment with increased challenge, if a Player scratches into a pocket already won by that Player, a prior ball that Player sunk comes back out to the dot, or spot 76 and the token for that pocket has to come back and the pocket rewon.

[0048] In another alternate embodiment, a Player, in addition to losing a sunk pocket for failing to move that Player's token to the scoring lane 78 before taking another shot, could also lose turn and the next shot would go to the other Player.

[0049] In yet another alternative embodiment, there is a holiday version that has the balls racked in the shape of a Christmas tree 32 for the twelve ball break as depicted in FIG. 2. An alternate tree shape rack 150 may be used. Tree shaped pool ball rack 150 preferably has a triangular shaped perimeter 154 proximate a rectangular shaped base perimeter 156, with the complete perimeter preferably dimensioned such that twelve balls arrange in the following rows: one ball, two balls centered below that, three balls centered below that, four balls centered below that, all in the triangular shaped portion 154, and two balls centered below that, in the rectangular perimeter portion 156.

[0050] Either shape, rocket shape 30 or Christmas tree shape 32 can alternately be racked within a traditional triangle rack, as shown by hashed lines 102 and 152 in FIGS. 1 and 2, respectively, in such case either by selected placement of the twelve balls within the rack and leaving three strategically located open ball spaces, or by placement of fifteen balls within the rack and removing three strategically located balls.

[0051] Preferred rocket shaped pool ball rack 100 with a triangular shaped perimeter 104 proximate with two opposingly positioned rhombic shaped base areas 106a, 106b. Rocket shaped rack 100 is preferably dimensioned such that twelve balls arrange in the following rows: one ball, two balls centered below that, three balls centered below that, four balls centered below that, all in the triangular shaped portion 104, and with one ball in each rhombic shaped base area 106a, 106b, each such area positioned below and proximate the two outermost edges of the four ball row 108, such that the triangle perimeter 104 extends along a straight line, inclusive of the rhombic shaped bases 106a, 106b.

[0052] In another alternate embodiment, the tokens can be Player provided, wherein for example, one Player may use six pennies and the other Player may use six quarters. In any case, it is preferred that the tokens are readily distinguishable between Players, at a distance, and preferably, they are sized to sit and remain in place on rails of pool table during play.

[0053] In an alternate holiday embodiment, the tokens are preferably shaped like snowmen and stars. Other holiday themed tokens can also be envisioned.

[0054] In the preferred rocket shaped 30 game 10, to reflect a space themed embodiment, the tokens can be shaped like crescent moons and stars. Other space themed tokens can also be envisioned.

[0055] In another embodiment, Players can collect and pocket the tokens, for example because they have a value and / or other uniqueness and / or strategic and / or collectible purpose. In one embodiment, the tokens could be redeemable or otherwise promotional.

[0056] In still another embodiment, pool tables could be adapted or accessorized or originally designed with onboard tokens, which could be in the form of lights or buttons or slide indicators or any other sort of indicator, whether removable or not, of any shape, and that can first indicate pockets yet to be won by a Player, and then when moved to the scoring lane or alternate scoring position, demonstrate the number of pockets won by that Player.

[0057] In another embodiment, the game could be played with tokens that are collectible or otherwise valuable and with a fee to enter the game, and the right for each Player to own each token collected for each hole or pocket in which an assigned target ball is properly sunk.

[0058] The preferred embodiment and any embodiment may be played on most pool tables, including without limitation most European pool tables, English pool tables, Snooker tables, or American pool tables.

[0059] In an alternate embodiment, although the preferred position of scoring lane 78 is on the rail 72 at the foot of the table 79 in order to benefit Player visual access to scoring, it is understood that the scoring lane may be placed in any position agreed upon by the Players.

[0060] In another alternate embodiment, it is envisioned that the preferred game and all its various alternate embodiments may be played in a simulated environment, such as on a computer, mobile device, tablet, or any other device that is suitable for simulated game play, such as, without limitation, on an app, a social media site, a website, downloadable or streaming software, or any other variation capable of such performance, and with Players playing against another live Player or playing against a programmed or artificial intelligence Player.

[0061] In yet another alternate embodiment, and whether the game of the present invention is played in person on a table or in a simulated environment, competitors in either of these environments or even across these environments could play in group challenge play, tournaments, or otherwise.

[0062] Having thus described exemplary embodiments of the present invention, it should be noted by those skilled in the art that the within disclosures are exemplary only, and that various other alternatives, adaptations, and modifications may be made with the scope of the present invention. Accordingly, the present invention is not limited to the specific embodiments illustrated herein, but is limited only by the following claims.
