Abstract
Description
TECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] The invention relates to an educational resource for families and caregivers. In particular, the invention relates to teaching social emotional learning skills.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] There is a lack of social emotional learning amongst early childhood learners. This gap in learning has been associated with the fallout of Covid, deficits in parent education, skills, and tools, as well as unidentified special needs.
[0003] Though there are social emotional books and other online resources for social emotional instruction in schools, there is no step-by-step guide or social emotional program suitable for families and / or people outside of the realm of education.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004] To bridge the gaps in social emotional learning amongst early childhood learners I created a program whereby tools and materials can be provided to assist in teaching these necessary skills at home or any other preschool environment. This invention will teach social emotional skills and students will in turn present with more developmentally appropriate social-emotional behaviors.
[0005] This invention provides families and caregivers with resources and simplified instructions for teaching social emotional skills to early childhood learners.
[0006] In any educational setting or at home, an adult will read the assigned pages of the associated social emotional learning book daily while following the scripted lessons provided. During each daily lesson the adult will be prompted to instruct lessons, lead discussions, ask questions, and lead practice activities using the provided plush toy.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0007] FIG. 1 shows an example of the SEL Buddy Backpack filled with 1 of the 5 social emotional books used to lead associated social emotional lessons. The titles are All Feelings Are Okay by Emily Hayes, Hands Are Not for Hitting by Martine Agassi Ph.D. and Marieka Heinlen, Shy Ninja by Mary Nhin, Teach Your Dragon To Follow Instructions Steve Herman, André Learns to Share by Mikaela Wilson.
[0008] It shows how the lesson plan used to help adults lead a week's worth of daily lessons which includes assigned pages for daily reading, prompts for discussions and questions, and practice activities for use with the plush toy will be included.
[0009] It shows that a plush toy used to practice the social emotional skills taught during each daily lesson will also be included.DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS
[0010] Each backpack holds 1 social emotional learning book. Beginning on the 1st day of the week, an adult will use the associated lesson plan to guide a lesson. The adult will read the assigned pages, follow the given prompts, and ask the provided questions. Adults will also follow the direction to lead a practice activity whereby the child uses the plush toy to practice the newly learned social emotional skill. Adults will follow these instructions daily, completing all provided objectives for the week. Can be repeated if needed to ensure the child has acquired the desired social emotional skill.
[0011] FIG. 1 shows the books that are included in each of the SEL Buddy Backpacks. Details for reading these books and leading social emotional lessons are provided in the associated lesson plans seen in FIG. 2. These lesson plans will be followed daily for one week and repeated, when necessary, until desired skill is acquired. FIG. 3 shows the plush toy that will be used to practice the associated social emotional skill.
[0012] Providing families and caregivers the resources and materials necessary to assist in teaching social emotional skills ensures that students will in turn present with more developmentally appropriate social-emotional behaviors.
