[0001] This application claims benefit of priority with U.S. Provisional Application Ser. No. 63 / 778,383, filed Mar. 27, 2025; the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference.BACKGROUNDField Of The Invention
[0002] This disclosure relates to a toothbrush cleaner, and more particularly to a toothbrush cleaner with a plurality of bristles.Description of the Related Art
[0003] Toothbrushes are an essential hygiene tool used daily to remove food debris, plaque, and bacteria from the surfaces of teeth and gums. Over time, however, a toothbrush can accumulate not only leftover toothpaste residue but also microbial contaminants on and between the bristles. The presence of moisture, organic material (e.g., saliva, toothpaste, and oral debris), and ambient environmental conditions creates a favorable habitat for bacterial growth on the toothbrush head.
[0004] In general practice, many consumers attempt to clean or “sanitize” their toothbrushes simply by running water over and through the bristles after use. While rinsing under tap water can remove some loose particles, it often does not adequately dislodge or kill the majority of residual bacteria, viruses, or fungi that may collect on bristles. Studies have shown that bacteria can survive, and in some cases even thrive, under these conditions especially when bristles remain moist, are stored in an enclosed container, or come into contact with other surfaces that harbor additional contaminants.
[0005] Once microorganisms adhere to the surfaces of a toothbrush head, they may form a layer of microbes embedded in a protective matrix that clings to both the bristles and the brush base. These biofilms can remain even after repeated rinsing with water, leading to increasing contamination levels over days or weeks of continuous use. In instances where water is not sufficiently forceful or where bristles are closely bundled, the water flow may not penetrate the densest areas of the brush head. Consequently, harmful or undesirable microbial populations can persist over time, and additional microbes can be transferred back into the user's mouth during subsequent brushing.
[0006] Various attempts to mitigate this problem have included using antimicrobial materials in toothbrush bristles, designing bristle configurations that improve fluid flow for cleaning, or employing UV or chemical sanitizers to reduce microbial loads. Despite these efforts, there remains a need for improved methods or apparatus that effectively address bacterial buildup and ensure that a toothbrush head remains hygienic between uses. The failure of simple tap-water rinsing to eliminate or significantly reduce microorganism presence underscores the ongoing challenge of toothbrush sanitation and highlights the demand for new solutions that prolong toothbrush cleanliness and safety.SUMMARY
[0007] A toothbrush cleaner is disclosed, the toothbrush cleaner comprises a cleaning head and a handle for ergonomic handling. The cleaning head defines a channel into which a user may insert a toothbrush or other brush. A plurality of bristles of various lengths and orientations line the channel so that back-and-forth movements of the toothbrush through the cleaning head scrub the brush head and toothbrush bristles from multiple angles.
[0008] One or more drainage apertures in the cleaning head permit water to freely enter and exit the channel, facilitating rinsing and preventing buildup of water or contaminants. A rotating mechanism couples the cleaning head to the handle so that the cleaning head can be tilted or angled, thereby accommodating user preference and access in different orientations. The rotating mechanism further includes a detachable male coupler and female coupler interface, allowing the cleaning head to be replaced easily for sanitation or to provide replacement heads.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

A user grasps the handle (111) and inserts the brush head (11) of the toothbrush (10), which includes toothbrush bristles (12), into a channel (113) formed in a cleaning head (110). The cleaning head (110) is attached to the handle (111) and can rotate around a top side (112) of the handle (111) via a rotating mechanism (170). The rotating mechanism (170) enables the cleaning head (110) to pivot to various angles, and also provides a detachable feature so that the cleaning head (110) can be replaced with a fresh one for sanitary purposes.
[0054] The cleaning head (110) includes a base portion (120) having a first end (121) and a second end (122) opposite the first end (121), and an upper surface (123) and a lower surface (124) arranged opposite the upper surface (123). From the first end (121) extends a first lateral portion (130), while from the second end (122) extends a second lateral portion (140). Together, these lateral portions define the channel (113) within which the toothbrush (10) is moved back and forth for cleaning. The first lateral portion (130) includes a first inner surface (131) opposite a first outer surface (132), and it is divided into a first upper half (133) and a first lower half (134). The first inner surface (131) can be a concave surface (135), although in some embodiments it may be flat. Similarly, the second lateral portion (140) has a second inner surface (141) opposite a second outer surface (142), and it is divided into a second upper half (143) and a second lower half (144). The second inner surface (141) can be a concave surface (145) mirroring the first inner surface (131), and in other embodiments this second inner surface (141) may also be flat.
[0055] Arranged along the channel (113) is a plurality of bristles (150), which are intended to scrub and remove debris from the brush head (11) and toothbrush bristles (12). The plurality of bristles (150) includes a group of base bristles (151), a first group of lateral bristles (153), and a second group of lateral bristles (154). The group of base bristles (151) extends orthogonally from the upper surface (123) of the base portion (120), and each of these base bristles may have a base bristle length (152) sufficient to reach beyond the typical toothbrush bristle length, thereby contacting the brush head (11) directly. The first group of lateral bristles (153) extends from the first inner surface (131) of the first lateral portion (130), and some or all may be angled downward on the first upper half (133) and / or angled upward on the first lower half (134). The second group of lateral bristles (154) extends from the second inner surface (141) of the second lateral portion (140), generally mirroring the first group of lateral bristles (153) so that some or all bristles on the second upper half (143) angle downward and some or all bristles on the second lower half (144) angle upward. In some configurations, the first and second group of lateral bristles (153, 154) extend orthogonally from their respective inner surfaces (131, 141). The lateral bristle length (155) may be less than the base bristle length (152), ensuring comprehensive coverage without impeding the reach of the base bristles (151). Each bristle can include a bristle body (156) of various shapes or textures, such as having filaments (157) to enhance scrubbing action including dome shapes, pointed tips, spiral features, or concentric circles.
[0056] To allow water to flow in and out of the channel (113) during cleaning, the cleaning head (110) further includes drainage apertures (160). These drainage apertures (160) may be holes or slits positioned on the first lateral portion (130) and the second lateral portion (140) in locations not occupied by bristles. When the user runs water through the cleaning head (110), the drainage apertures (160) help rinse away toothpaste residue, food particles, and other debris, improving overall cleaning performance.
[0057] The handle (111) supports the cleaning head (110) and may be sized and shaped for ergonomic gripping. The rotating mechanism (170) coupling the handle (111) and the cleaning head (110) comprises a gear subassembly (171) situated on the top side (112) of the handle (111) and a pin subassembly (173) on the lower surface (124) of the base portion (120). The pin subassembly (173) includes at least one pin (174) and may include a circular flange (175) for guiding the gear subassembly (171). Engagement between the gear subassembly (171) and the pin (174) provides stepped positions for angling the cleaning head (110). Additionally, a male coupler (176) located on the pin subassembly (173) and a female coupler (172) located on the gear subassembly (171) allow the cleaning head (110) to be removed and replaced. Swapping the positions of the male coupler (176) and female coupler (172) is also possible without affecting functionality. By combining rotatable and detachable coupling, the toothbrush cleaner (100) achieves both ergonomic adjustability and convenience in replacing worn or dirty cleaning heads (110).
