Abstract
Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention relates to a triangular prism shaped mesh crib liner, used as a breathable crib liner enclosure which allows air to circulate through the crib compartment and prevents a baby from hitting their head or appendages on the vertical balusters on a crib or from getting their head or appendages stuck between the crib's balusters.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] It is well known that there are many different types of prior art baby cribs that have been developed in the past to contain and protect infants, babies and small children. Most of these cribs are produced using balusters held in place using top and bottom horizontal rails on either side of the crib or on all four sides of the crib, allowing airflow through the crib. Usually, one side of the crib is adjustable, allowing easy access into the crib compartment.
[0003] Another crib innovation allows the mattress to be raised or lowered inside of the crib compartment using an adjustable mattress platform. Since the introduction of the crib, infants, babies and small children have become lodged between the balusters, resulting in injury or death. Cribs are now manufactured with smaller spacing between the balusters. The padded crib bumper was invented to prevent infants, babies and small children from becoming lodged between the balusters or from becoming injured when impacting the balusters. The down side to the padded crib bumper, is that it prevents the circulation of air within the crib compartment.
[0004] The problem with most crib bumpers is that they are only 12-inches tall and sit on top of the mattress. This allows the opportunity for babies to lift the bumper and put limbs out of the crib. There have been attempts to produce cribs without balusters to keep a baby from hitting their head and appendages on the crib's balusters and for keeping the head and appendages from getting stuck between the balusters. More specifically there are prior art cribs which use a mesh sleeping surface and replace the crib's balusters with mesh panels on the left and right wall sections and on the head and foot wall sections. These improvements to the crib's design have merit, but a majority of the cribs presently used and manufactured throughout the world today still use the standard vertical spindle or rail design.
[0005] One drawback to prior art crib bumpers is that they are manufactured out of a cushioning material of flexible resilient compressible foam rubber or down. The covering of these bumpers incorporated an un-breathable waterproof fabric or plastic. This waterproof fabric or plastic extension is used on the bottom of the bumper, for securing the bumper underneath or against the mattress. Unlike the present invention, these type of crib bumpers do not allow air to circulate through it, the crib bumper does not protect the baby from impacting the balusters above the bumper and the baby can still become lodged between the bumper and the mattress or between the bumper and the balusters.
[0006] Therefore what is needed is an apparatus to block the openings between the slats of cribs to prevent infants, babies and small children from becoming lodged between the balusters or from becoming injured when impacting the balusters, while maintaining the safety of breathability.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] The following descriptions of the preferred embodiments of the present invention are all manufactured using three connected breathable fabric mesh panels and one singular fabric mesh panel, preferably a nylon mesh screen material or secondly a polyester mesh screen material, to increase air circulation inside the crib compartment.
[0008] The crib dimensions used throughout the world vary, but most cribs in the United States accept the standard rectangular crib mattress size. The crib mattress is positioned on an immovable support spring, lattice support attached to the crib's lower horizontal rail section or on a vertically adjustable horizontal support member attached to the crib's lower horizontal rail section. The distance from the top of the mattress to the top rail of the crib varies, depending on the height of the side rails or on the position of the vertically adjustable horizontal support member attached to the crib's lower horizontal rail section.
[0009] The present invention incorporates a mesh material in the form of a triangular prism to prevent arms / legs from escaping the crib, and also to create a small space between the inner layer of mesh and the slats of the crib; for head protection. Furthermore, the triangular prism is completely sealed by mesh material leaving no access for limbs or entanglement of a baby in present invention. More specifically, the present invention uses three connected and one singular vertical rectangular panels that are triangularly shaped using a breathable mesh fabric. The triangularly shaped panels further define a rectangularly shaped bottom portion, which extends past the triangle prism. The mesh fabric is preferably a nylon mesh screen material or some other material such as a polyester mesh. The three connected and one singular vertical rectangular panels are attached to and suspended from the inside posts of various balusters to ensure proper security. The three connected and one singular vertical panels are attached from the top of and from the bottom of the vertical balusters, and to the top rail of the crib using adjustable straps or a fastening means. The eight rail, eight top and eight bottom adjustable straps or fastening means are preferably sewn onto the back panel of the rectangular shaped breathable mesh fabric rectangular liner sections. The eight rail, eight top and eight bottom adjustable straps or fastening means are preferably held in place on the crib's baluster posts and railing using an adjustable hook and loop Velcro™ fasteners for securing the mesh crib liner tautly to the crib's four corner posts.
[0010] The breathable mesh crib liner, when attached and secured into place, provides a rigid but slightly flexible barrier, keeping a baby from coming in contact with the balusters and corner posts. If a baby were to fall against the vertical walls of the breathable mesh crib liner, the impact would be absorbed by the taut flexible mesh walls and would act as a type of shock absorber or trampoline surface. The present invention may be manufactured with a breathable mesh fabric base attached to the bottom of all four vertical mesh panels. The suspended breathable mesh fabric base comes in direct contact with the edges of the crib mattress.
[0011] It is an object of the present invention to provide a mesh crib liner which is breathable and that air circulates throughout.
[0012] It is another object of the present invention to provide a breathable crib liner that prevents a baby from impacting their head or appendages against a crib's balusters or crib posts.
[0013] It is still another object of the present invention to provide a breathable crib liner that prevents a baby from sticking their head or appendages through a crib's balusters.
[0014] It is yet another object of the present invention to provide a breathable mesh crib liner that is installed into and removed out of the crib fast and easily, for crib maintenance and for the cleaning of the mesh crib liner.
[0015] The present invention and many preferred embodiments of the present invention all use a taut breathable mesh fabric secured to eight baluster posts and four horizontal rails for preventing an object from getting in or out of the crib through the balusters, or from an object within the crib coming in contact with another object located outside the crib, through the balusters.
[0016] These and other objects, features and advantages of the present invention are provided within this patent application and will be better understood in connection with the following drawings and descriptions of the preferred embodiments. Additional objects of the present invention will become apparent as the description proceeds.

It is apparent that FIGS. 1 through 5 all show breathable mesh panels spaced away from any hard surface inside a crib or support structure. Additional objects of the present invention will become apparent as the description proceeds.
[0025] Referring to FIG. 1, there is shown a perspective view of a prior art rectangular crib 10 having four vertical corner posts 12 extending from the floor to the top horizontal crib rails 14, and having four bottom horizontal crib rails 16 with vertical crib balusters 18 connecting the top and bottom crib rails 14 and 16, respectively. The rectangular crib 10 receives a rectangular crib mattress 20 which sits on an immovable support spring or lattice attached to the crib's lower horizontal rail section 16 or on a vertically adjustable horizontal support member attached to the crib's lower horizontal rail section 16. The immovable mattress support or vertically adjustable horizontal mattress support member is not shown. The breathable crib liner 22 is positioned and secured inside of the rectangular crib 10 from four vertical corner posts 12, preferably when the baby is not in the crib 10 and the crib mattress 20 as shown in FIG. 1. is covered with a waterproof barrier, sheets and / or bedding. The mesh crib bumper 22 has four vertical mesh panels 22 connected at four vertical corners.
[0026] Turning once again to FIG. 1, the crib 10 securing method uses sixteen adjustable straps 24 with a fastening means 24 at one end and a length of strap to wrap around an outside vertical baluster post 12 and feed through and secure to the fastening means and eight adjustable top straps 24 with a fastening means 24 at one end, preferably a Velcro strap to wrap around the top railing 12. The fastening means 24 in FIG. 1 shows a belt loop to feed through and secure to the fastening means 24, with a hook Velcro™.
[0027] Turning now to FIG. 2, there is shown a front elevational view of one panel of the triangularly shaped mesh crib liner 30 at one end of a crib 10, in accordance with the present invention. A mesh material shaped in the form of a triangle prism comprises the top portion 32 to prevent arms / legs from escaping the crib, and also to create a small space between the inner layer of mesh and the balusters 18 as shown in FIG. 2 of the crib 10 for head protection. More specifically, the present invention uses five connected panels, two triangular 34 and three rectangular 32, 36, 37 that are triangular prism shaped 32 in a breathable mesh fabric. The triangular prism shaped panels 32 further define a rectangularly shaped bottom portion 36, which is part of the back panel extending from the top of the triangular prism 30 to the bottom of the crib base 38.
[0028] The mesh fabric is preferably a nylon mesh screen material or some other material such as a polyester mesh. As shown in FIG. 5., the three connected and one singular vertical rectangular panels are attached to and suspended from the inside of the crib's various vertical baluster posts. The three connected and one singular vertical panels are attached from the top of and from the bottom of the vertical balusters, and to the top rail of the crib posts using adjustable straps or a fastening means.
[0029] The breathable mesh crib liner, when attached and secured into place, provides a rigid but slightly flexible barrier, keeping a baby from coming in contact with the balusters and corner posts. If a baby were to fall against the inclined walls of the breathable mesh crib liner, the impact would be absorbed by the taut flexible mesh walls and would act as a type of shock absorber or trampoline surface. The present invention may be manufactured with a breathable mesh fabric base attached to the bottom of all four vertical mesh panels. The suspended breathable mesh fabric rectangular base 36 comes in direct contact with the edges of the crib mattress.
[0030] The four triangular prism shaped mesh panels are fastened tightly to a crib's various eight vertical balusters from a top edge and a bottom edge along the back panel 36, as well as being fastened to the crib's four top railings with eight connecting devices. The outer panel of the triangular prism 32 extends forward to create spacing from the back rectangular panel 36. The triangular prism panel 32 and the bottom prism panel 37 rest on top of the mattress, near the edge.
[0031] More particularly, the mesh crib liner uses an elongated horizontal mesh panel base, which extends past the triangular prism shape wherein it will slide in between the mattress and the crib slats, going all the way to the bottom of the crib for preventing limbs from slipping under said mesh triangular prism and getting stuck or the baby lifting the triangular prism to access the balusters or present danger of entanglement. The mesh panels are fabricated from a mesh material and spring wire, which allows it to hold its shape wherein the mesh material is made of elastic breathable foam.
[0032] In summary, the breathable mesh crib liner according to the preferred embodiments of the invention, provides a mesh crib liner insert which is breathable and allows air to circulate through it, an enclosure that prevents a baby from impacting their head or appendages against a crib's balusters or four corner posts, an enclosure that prevents a baby from sticking their head or appendages through a crib's balusters or reaching over the top of the crib enclosure, an enclosure that prevents objects from falling outside of the enclosure, an enclosure that is installed into and removed out of the crib fast and easily for crib maintenance and for cleaning, an enclosure preventing a baby from lifting the triangular prism to present an entanglement hazard, and an enclosure that provides visibility through the mesh paneling for caretakers to not have an obstructed view of the baby whether by physical viewing or viewing by a baby monitor.
[0033] The present invention and its many preferred embodiments, disclosed and not disclosed, all use taut connected breathable mesh fabric panels preferably secured to eight vertical baluster posts, allowing air to circulate through the crib compartment, while preventing an object within the enclosure from coming in contact with object located outside the enclosure or from an object getting inside the enclosure through the taut breathable mesh fabric panels.
[0034] While the invention has been described with reference to the preferred embodiments thereof, it will be appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art that various modifications can be made to the invention without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as a whole.
