Description

TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclose relates to the field of blade sharpeners and, in particular, to a system and method for sharpening a blade.BACKGROUND

[0002] Current iterations of blade sharpening tools incorporate sharpening rods at a fixed and non-adjustable position. Many of these tools fail to provide adjustable sharpening angles. If the angle of the sharpening angle cannot be precisely adjusted, the sharpening angle requirements of various blades cannot be met.

[0003] Further, existing blade sharpening tools lack modularity and have single use functions (i.e., coarse sharpening, fine sharpening, or polishing). Users must therefore purchase multiple knife sharpening devices to match each desired knife sharpening function.

[0004] For instance, existing fixed-angle sharpeners are designed to sharpen knives and other edged tools by accurately adjusting and controlling the sharpening angle. These sharpeners usually offer preset angle options or adjustable guides to help users maintain a consistent angle. However, such sharpeners also lack the precision to ensure accurate angle adjustment, particularly when dealing with knives of different widths. Specifically, existing sharpeners are not able to maintain precise edge angles across varying blade widths due to the inherent geometric relationship between the blade widths and angle of the blade edges under fixed clamping conditions. This is especially noticeable when a user desires high-precision sharpening as existing sharpeners are not able to make the correct adjustments to account for the variance of various blade widths. Ensuring precise and consistent knife positioning for accurate sharpening is a major challenge for the existing sharpeners.

[0005] In view of the foregoing, a need exists for an improved blade sharpening tool which is capable of adjusting the requirements of each knife or blade.SUMMARY

[0006] The present disclosure is directed to a novel blade sharpening tool and method of use which provides users with adjustable sharpening angles and added modularity. Specifically, the present disclosure is directed to multiple clamping positions based on varying blade widths. The correct clamping position is “preset” or selected by the user. By selecting the correct clamping position, a user ensures that a uniform length of blade section is exposed for the blade sharpener, which ensures a consistent sharpening angle.

[0007] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the method of using the blade sharpening apparatus includes a series of steps, including an initial step of determining the width of a blade by measuring the cutting edge of the blade to the spine of the blade. Next a user may mount the blade to the blade sharpening apparatus in one of a plurality of predetermined mounting positions. The blade sharpening apparatus includes a clamp (or clamps) to secure the blade in a fixed position wherein the cutting edge of the blade extends beyond the distal end of the clamp. Next, the user selects a desired sharpening angle for sharpening the cutting edge of the blade. Next, the user may adjust an angle guide rod to the desired sharpening angle. The angle guide rod is disposed within an upright. The upright has a pivot joint with a sharpening rod movably connected thereto. The pivot joint enables multi-directional movement of the sharpening rod. Finally, the user sharpens the cutting edge of the blade at the desired sharpening angle by oscillating the sharpening rod across the cutting edge of the blade while the blade is in the fixed position.

[0008] In an embodiment, the method of using the blade sharpening apparatus may also comprise the step of selecting a mounting position from a group consisting essentially of: a wide blade mounting position, a standard blade mounting position, a miniature blade mounting position, a plane blade mounting position, and a scissor blade mounting position. A wide blade mounting position is for a blade having a blade width of between 70 to 110 millimeters. A standard blade mounting position is for a blade having a blade width of between 15 and 70 millimeters. A miniature blade mounting position is for a blade having a blade width of less than 15 millimeters. A plane blade mounting position is for a plane blade. A scissor blade mounting position is for a scissor blade.

[0009] In an embodiment, the method of using the blade sharpening apparatus may also comprise the additional step of securing the blade within at least one clamp such that the cutting edge of the blade is disposed in a direction facing away from the blade sharpener. Next, the user may orient the cutting edge of the blade at a desired distance from the distal end of the clamp. In the wide blade mounting position, the desired distance is approximately two inches. In the standard blade mounting position, the desired distance is approximately one-half of an inch. In the miniature blade mounting position, the desired distance is approximately one-sixth of an inch. In the plane blade mounting position, the desired distance is approximately one and one-quarter inches. In the scissor mounting position, the cutting edge of the blade is disposed to align with the lower support block of the clamp.

[0010] In an embodiment, the method of using the blade sharpening apparatus may also comprise the additional step of identifying the sharpening angle of the cutting edge of the blade and orienting the desired sharpening angle in alignment with the identified angle of the cutting edge of the blade.

[0011] In an embodiment, the additional step of identifying a sharpening angle of the cutting edge of the blade comprises a series of additional steps, including an initial step of marking the cutting edge of the blade with ink from a marker. Next, a user adjusts the angle guide rod to adjust the sharpening angle of the sharpening rod. Next, a user applies an abrasive surface of the sharpening rod to the marked cutting edge of the blade. Next, the user repeats the foregoing steps until the application of the abrasive surface to the marked cutting edge of the blade removes the marker ink. Next, the user fastens the angle guide rod in a fixed position with a removable fastener at the sharpening angle which removed the marker ink from the cutting edge of the blade. Next, the user observes the sharpening angle value of the cutting edge of the blade by comparing the location of a marker line disposed on a bottom portion of the angle guide rod to indicia depicting angle sharpening values disposed along the surface of the upright which corresponds to the mounting position selected by the user. Finally, the user records the sharpening angle value of the cutting edge of the blade.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0049] The present disclosure is for a novel blade sharpening apparatus and method of use which provides users with adjustable sharpening angles and added modularity.BLADE SHARPENING APPARATUS

[0050] FIGS. 1 to 26 depict a blade sharpening apparatus 100 and its corresponding components. In an embodiment, the blade sharpening apparatus 100 comprises a base 102, a main support 104, and a sharpening rod 106.Main Support

[0051] FIGS. 1A and 1B depict an embodiment of the main support 104. The main support 104 comprises a bottom portion of the blade sharpening apparatus 100 to rest on a surface. An upright 108 extends upward from the bottom of the main support 104. A connection hub 146 extends horizontally from a lower portion of the upright 108 to connect to a base 102. A beam 122 for mounting various clamps 124 extends horizontally from an upper portion of the upright 108.Upright

[0052] On opposing sides of the upright 108 are a plurality of indicia 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d which identify angle sharpening values. In an embodiment, the first side of the upright 108 comprises a first set and second set of indicia which identify angle sharpening values 112a, 112b. The opposite side of the upright 108 comprises a third set and fourth set of indicia which identify angle sharpening values 112c, 112d. In an embodiment, the first set 112a and second set 112b of indicia identifying angle sharpening values are used for blades having standard blade widths and wide blade widths, respectively. In addition, blades having miniature blade widths may use the first and second sets of indicia 112a, 112b. The third set 112c and fourth set of indicia 112d identifying angle sharpening values are used for blades having chisel or plane blades and scissor blades, respectively. In alternative embodiments, the upright 108 comprises alternative arrangements for angle sharpening values.

[0053] The upright 108 also comprises an angle guide rod 114 which is disposed within the upright and is capable of moving up and down. Connected to the top end of the angle guide rod 114, and extending above the upright 108, is a pivot joint 110 which moves along a vertical axis with the angle guide rod 114. At the bottom end of the angle guide rod 114 is a marker line 116 which moves vertically with the angle guide rod 114. As disclosed herein, a user can use the marker line 116 to determine the angle sharpening value from one of the four sets of indicia 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d. The angle guide rod 114 can be secured / fastened at a desired position (or angle sharpening value 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d) via a removable fastener 118. In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 3A-3B, the fastener 118 is an adjustable knob. Tightening the fastener 118 secures the angle guide rod 114 in place and loosening the fastener 118 allows a user to freely move the angle guide rod 114 up and down in a vertical direction. In an alternative embodiment, the fastener 118 may comprise alternative means to secure the angle guide rod 114 in a desired position.

[0054] As discussed above, the pivot joint 110 is disposed at the top end of the angle guide rod 114 opposite the marker line 116. The pivot joint 110 comprises a cylindrical passage 120 having simultaneous multi-directional movement and full 360 degree rotation. The cylindrical passage 120 is sized such that a sharpening rod 106 (discussed below) may slide within the passage 120. In an embodiment the pivot joint 110 is constructed entirely of metal. In other embodiments, the pivot joint may be constructed of other suitable materials.Beam & Clamps

[0055] The main support 104 further comprises a rectangular beam 122 for securing various clamps 124, including standard knife clamps, mini knife clamps, wood chisel (and plane blade) clamps, and scissor press-plate assemblies, all of which are described below. The beam 122 may include a plurality of slots 126 which allow a user to fasten the clamps 124 to the beam in an optimal position. In an embodiment, the beam 122 comprises a first end 122a and a second end 122b, wherein the first end 122a is longer than the second end 122b. In an embodiment, the beam 122 is made of metal and includes a matte black electrophoretic coating.

[0056] The beam 122 is rotatably connected to a shaft extending horizontally from an upper portion of the upright 108. As depicted in FIG. 2A, a knob 128 is used to secure the beam 122 in place. By loosening a knob 128, a user may rotate the beam 122 vertically. In the vertical position (depicted in FIG. 2A), the user may rotate the beam 122 one hundred and eighty degrees in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion such that the first end 122a and second end 122b flip positions, and return the beam 122 to a functional position (depicted in FIGS. 1A and 1B). As discussed below, this feature assists a user with sharpening multiple sides of a blade.

[0057] A plurality of clamps 124 may be secured to the first end 122a and / or second end 122b of the beam 122. Each clamp 124 comes in a variety of designs; however, each of the clamps 124 comprise a fastening screw 130 and a groove 132 to detachably connect to the beam 122. When the fastening screw 130 is loosened, the clamp 124 can slide left or right along the beam 122, with a total adjustment range of 50 millimeters on the second end of the beam 122b and 90 millimeters on the first end of the beam 122a. This allows for precise positioning to accommodate different blade lengths and ensuring stable clamping. For longer knives, clamps 124 are secured on both sides of the beam 122a, 122b for greater clamping length as needed. For shorter knives, multiple clamps 124 can be positioned on the same side of the beam 122 to reduce the clamping length as needed.Standard Knife Clamp

[0058] FIGS. 9A and 9B depict a standard knife clamp 124 which is designed to hold standard knives (including wide and standard width blades—includes knives having a width of greater than 15 millimeters). This clamp 124 comprises two arms 123 with a gap therebetween. A clamping screw 134 extends through both arms 123 (and the gap therebetween) of the clamp 124. By rotating the clamping screw 134 clockwise or counterclockwise, the user can adjust the clamp arms 123 to accommodate knives having a blade thickness of between zero and seven millimeters. The clamp 124 includes a thin-walled section 125 to provide elasticity in the arms 123 of the clamp 124. As such, tightening the clamping screw 134 brings the arms 123 of the clamp 124 together while loosening the clamping screw 134 allows the arms 123 of the clamp 124 to reset to a natural state.Mini-Clamp

[0059] A mini-clamp (not depicted) may be used for knives having a knife width of less than 15 millimeters. The mini-clamp is comprised of substantially the same elements as the standard knife clamp but has a narrower gap between the arms 123 of the clamp 124 when the clamp 124 is in its natural position and is used to accommodate blade thicknesses between zero and two millimeters.Scissor Clamp

[0060] FIG. 9C depicts a specialized scissor clamp 124. The scissor clamp 124 includes a pair of adjustable upper pressure plates 136 and a lower support block 138. In a preferred embodiment the pair of upper pressure plates 136 and a lower support block 138 are made of high-strength metal. In a preferred embodiment, springs are disposed beneath the upper plates 136 to keep the plates 136 separated from the lower support block 138. The clamp 124 further includes clamping screws 134 extending through each of the upper pressure plates 136 and lower support block 138. A user can use the clamping screws 134 to narrow or widen the gap between the upper pressure plates 136 and lower support block 138. Tightening the clamping screws 134 brings the plates 136 in closer proximity to the lower support block 138 to secure the scissor blade. The two upper plates 136 can move independently, allow each plate 136 to securely hold scissor blades that have non-uniform blade thickness. The specialized scissor clamp also includes a protective cap 140 to place on the tip of the scissor blade which is not being sharpened. When not in use, the protective cap 140 may be stored in the scissor clamp 124 itself.Wood Chisel / Plane Blade Clamp

[0061] FIG. 9D depicts a wood chisel (or plane blade) clamp. This clamp 124 includes a first edge portion 142 and a second edge portion 144 with a clamping screw 134 extending therethrough. In an embodiment, the first edge portion 142 and second edge portion 144 are made from stainless steel. A user may adjust a gap between the first and second edges 142, 144 by rotating the clamping screw to secure a wood chisel or plane blade therebetween.Connection Hub

[0062] The main support 104 further comprises a connection hub 146 to secure the main support 104 to the base 102 (as depicted in FIG. 4B). The connection hub 146 comprises a knob 148 and a pair of protrusions which detachably connect to receiving grooves 150 in the base 102.

[0063] The connection hub 146 is connected to a middle support 152 extending downward from the beam 122. The middle support 152 has designated holes for convenient storage of the specialized wrench (described below).

[0064] When the main support 104 is secured to the base 102, the bottom portion of the main support 104 and the base 102 are disposed along the same plane such that the bottom of the main support 104 and the base 102 rest along the same surface.Base

[0065] In an embodiment, the base 102 is made of metal with a matte black electrophoretic finish. Non-slip pads may be attached to the underside of the base 102 to enhance stability of the apparatus 100 by preventing slippage of the apparatus 100.

[0066] As depicted in FIG. 4A, the base 102 incorporates indicia displaying mounting instructions for sharpening a blade 154a, 154b, 154c, 154d which correspond to the indicia identifying angle sharpening values 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d described above. The indicia for mounting instructions 154a, 154b, 154c, 154d instruct a user how to mount various blades based on the width of the blade (i.e., the length from the spine to the cutting edge of the blade). The corresponding indicia identifying angle sharpening values 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d are based on this mounting positioning.

[0067] A first set of instructions 154a is for blades having standard blade widths and corresponds to the first set of angle sharpening values 112a. The first set of instructions 154a instructs the user to set the cutting edge of the blade approximately 12.7 millimeters (or one-half of an inch) from the distal end of the clamp 124 (i.e., the portion of the clamp furthest away from the beam). The first set of instructions 154a are suitable for standard blades having a width range of approximately 15-70 millimeters.

[0068] The second set of instructions 154b is for blades having a wide blade width and instructs the user to set the cutting edge of the blade approximately 50.8 millimeters (or two inches) from the distal end of the clamp 124. The second set of instructions 154b corresponds to the second set of angle sharpening values 112b and is suitable for wider width blades having a width range of approximately 70 to 110 millimeters.

[0069] The third set of instructions 154c is for chisels or plane blades and instructs the user to set the cutting edge of the blade approximately 32 millimeters (or one and one-quarter inches) from the ends of the first and second edges 142, 144 furthest from the beam 122. The third set of instructions 154c correspond to the third set of angle sharpening values 112c.

[0070] The fourth set of instructions 154d is for scissor blades and instructs the user to set the cutting edge of the scissor blade flush with the edge of the lower support block 138. The fourth set of instructions 154d correspond to the fourth set of angle sharpening values 112d.

[0071] If the blades to be sharpened do not align with any of the instructions 154a, 154b, 154c, 154d set forth above, a user can sharpen the blade via alternative mounting positions set forth in the method of sharpening a blade described below.Sharpening Rod

[0072] The blade sharpening apparatus 100 further comprises a sharpening rod 106 for sharpening a blade. As depicted in FIG. 7, the sharpening rod 106 is disposed within and is slidably connected to the pivot joint 110 via the passage 120. The sharpening rod 106 includes an adjustable sleeve and locking screw 156 added to one end of the rod 106, which when fastened to the rod 106, prevents the rod 160 from being entirely withdrawn from the passage 120 of the pivot joint 110. Silicone dampening rings may be applied to the rod 106 to act as a vibration dampening component, which reduces the noise generated during sharpening. The silicone dampening rings may also be used to restrict lateral movement of the rod 106 within the passage 120. At an end of the rod 106 opposite from the sleeve and locking screw 156, is an abrasive plate 158. Along a top portion of the abrasive plate 158 is an anti-slip textured ridge to provide a user with a secure grip during use. In an embodiment, the abrasive plate 158 may include a rounded handle.

[0073] As depicted in FIG. 5C, the top surface of the abrasive plate 158 incorporates reference measurements for a user to measure the distance between a distal end of a clamp 124 and the cutting edge of a blade corresponding to the indicia 154a, 154b, 154c, 154d on the base 102 of the apparatus 100. In an embodiment, the top surface of the abrasive plate 158 includes reference markers 159 for: one-half of an inch (12.7 millimeters), which is used when following the first set of instructions 154a; one and one-quarter inches (32 millimeters), which is used when following the third set of instructions 154c; and two inches (50.8 millimeters), which is used when following the second set of instructions 154b. A user may use the abrasive plate 158 to measure the distance from a distal end of a clamp 124 to the cutting edge of the blade to ensure that the blade is mounted to the apparatus appropriately. If the blade is improperly mounted, a user will not be able to determine an accurate sharpening angle from the indicia 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d displayed on the upright 108.

[0074] Along a bottom portion of the abrasive plate 158 is a rectangular abrasive surface 160. In an embodiment, the abrasive surface 160 may comprise: an electroplated diamond plate (having a grit surface of between 300 and 1000 grits), a ceramic plate, whetstone plate, or a leather strop. In an embodiment, the electroplated diamond plate has a grit surface of 325, 600, or 1000 grits. As is known to one of skill in the art, coarse grinding (or sharpening) requires a lower grit material and fine grinding (or sharpening) requires a higher grit material. Other grit surfaces may be used to achieve the desired sharpening results. A ceramic plate may be used to achieve a finer polish. Ceramic materials are more durable and resistant to wear when compared to the diamond plate. The leather strops are used to remove burrs from the blade surface after sharpening. In an embodiment, the abrasive surface 160 is one inch in width and six inches in length. In an embodiment, the abrasive surface 160 is fully embedded within the abrasive plate 158 to prevent displacement or misalignment during use.

[0075] In an embodiment, the abrasive plate 158 is detachably connected from the rod 106 and may be used independently as a sharpening plate or as a measurement tool. In an embodiment the rod 106 (without the abrasive plate 158) is approximately 325 millimeters in length.

[0076] FIGS. 6A and 6B depict a specialized abrasive plate 158 and specialized sharpening rod 106 for sharpening a scissor blade. This specialized sharpening rod 106 incorporates a specialized abrasive plate 158 which does not include a grip along the top surface. The specialized sharpening rod 106 has a triangular cross section to wedge between the area of the scissors where the scissor blades meet. The specialized sharpening rod 106 (as depicted in FIGS. 6A and 6B) are most effective at sharpening scissor blades which are unable to separate or open at an angle greater than 90 degrees. If the scissor blades are able to separate or open at an angle of greater than 90 degrees, the standard sharpening rod 106 described in the preceding paragraphs may be used, as depicted in FIG. 22. The specialized abrasive plate 158 has an abrasive surface 160 made of a material having between a 300 grit and 1000 grit surface. In an embodiment, the abrasive surface 160 may be a 325 grit or 600 grit surface. The triangular cross-section design of the specialized abrasive plate 158 allows the abrasive surface 160 to reach the base of the scissor blade (i.e., the portion proximate the connection point of the scissor blades).Specialized Wrench

[0077] FIG. 10 depicts a specialized wrench 200 which is compatible with all of the fasteners and screws in the apparatus 100, including the clamps 124 and base 102. The wrench 200 has a circular anti-slip handle 202 with grooves as well as concave curves along the front and back surface to make the handle 202 comfortable to grip and use.METHOD OF USING THE BLADE SHARPENING APPARATUS

[0078] FIGS. 11-26 depict images of the blade sharpening apparatus 100 being used to sharpen various blades. The method of using the blade sharpening apparatus 100 comprises the following steps: determining the width of the blade to be sharpened; mounting the blade to the apparatus; selecting a sharpening angle; and sharpening the blade, all of which are described below.Determining the Width of the Blade

[0079] To use the blade sharpening apparatus 100 a user must determine the width of the blade to be sharpened. The width of the blade can be determined by finding the distance from the spine of the blade to the cutting edge of the blade. The width of the blade determines how a user should mount the blade to the blade sharpening apparatus 100.Mounting the Blade to the Apparatus

[0080] Indicia along the base 102 depicts a plurality of mounting instructions 154a, 154b, 154c, 154d depending on the width of the blade. A user shall select mounting option B 154b (as depicted in FIG. 11) where the width of the blade is between 70 and 110 millimeters. A user shall select mounting option A 154a (as depicted in FIG. 15) where the width of the blade is between 15 millimeters and 70 millimeters. If the width of the blade is less than 15 millimeters a user shall select a modified mounting position as described below. A user shall select mounting option C 154c (as depicted in FIG. 24) where the blade is a chisel or plane blade. A user shall select mounting option D 154d (as depicted in FIG. 22) where the blade is a scissor blade. Mounting option D 154d is the preferred mounting option where the sharpening angle of the cutting edge of the scissor blade is between 35 and 70 degrees. If the sharpening angle of the cutting edge of the scissor blade is less than 35 degrees, the user may proceed with mounting option A 154a.Mounting Option B

[0081] To mount a blade pursuant to mounting option B 154b, the blade is secured to the apparatus 100 by applying clamps 124 to the blade on both sides of the beam 122. Prior to securing the clamps 124 to the blade, the user shall use the abrasive plate 158 to measure the distance from the end of clamp 124 (i.e., the distal end) to the cutting edge of the blade and orient the blade such that the distance is approximately two inches (as depicted in FIG. 12). After orienting the blade, the user shall tighten the clamps 124 by rotating a clamping screw 134 with the specialized wrench 200 to securely mount the blade to the apparatus 100.

[0082] In an alternative method, where the blade width exceeds 110 millimeters, a user must first ensure that the blade is securely clamped with minimal exposure beyond the distal end of the clamp 124. In the alternative method, the distance between the cutting edge of the blade and the distal end of the clamp 124 is not two inches. It is noted that the indicia 112b corresponding to mounting option B 154b will not reflect the accurate sharpening angle of the blade. Nonetheless a user may sharpen such a blade by following the directions set forth in the paragraphs below.Mounting Option A

[0083] To mount a blade pursuant to mounting option A 154a, the blade is secured to the apparatus 100 by applying clamps 124 to the blade on both sides of the beam 122. Prior to securing the clamps 124 to the blade, the user shall use the abrasive plate 158 to measure the distance from the end of the clamp 124 to the cutting edge of the blade and orient the blade such that the distance is approximately one-half of an inch or 12.7 mm (as depicted in FIG. 15). After orienting the blade, the user shall tighten the clamp 124 by rotating the clamping screw 134 with the specialized wrench 200 to securely mount the blade to the apparatus 100.

[0084] In an alternative method, where the blade width is less than 15 millimeters, a user must first ensure that the blade is clamped securely, with as much of the blade exposed beyond the distal end of the clamp 124 as possible. Preferably, the distance between the cutting edge of the blade and the distal end of the clamp 124 (when sharpening blade widths of less than 15 millimeters) is at least one-sixth of an inch (as depicted in FIGS. 18 and 19). It is noted that the indicia 112a corresponding to mounting option A 154a will not reflect the accurate sharpening angle of the blade. Nonetheless, a user may sharpen such a blade by following the directions set forth in the paragraphs below.Mounting Option D

[0085] To mount a blade pursuant to mounting option D 154d, the blade is secured to the apparatus 100 by applying a specialized scissor clamp 124 (depicted in FIG. 9C and FIG. 22) on one side of the beam 122. Prior to securing the clamp 124 to a scissor blade, the user shall adjust the upper plates 136 forward or backward to accommodate the scissor blade. The upper plates 136 have a range of movement of 14.5 millimeters.

[0086] The user shall adjust the upper plates 136 and orient the scissor blade such that the cutting edge is flush or aligns with the end of lower support block 138 (i.e., distal end of the clamp 124). A user may also apply the protective cap 140 to the cutting edge of the blade not being sharpened. After orienting the blade, the user shall tighten the clamps 124 by rotating the clamping screws of clamps 124 with the specialized wrench 200 to securely mount the scissor blade to the apparatus 100.

[0087] The specialized scissor clamp 124 is preferred where the thickness of the scissor blade exceeds 2 millimeters and the sharpening angle of the scissor blades is greater than 35 degrees. In the preferred mounting position, the specialized scissor clamp 124 is mounted on the left side of the beam 122 (as depicted in FIG. 22) to ensure that when the scissors are opened to the maximum angle, the handles of the scissors will not interfere with the apparatus 100.

[0088] Where the sharpening angle of the scissor blades is less than 35 degrees, the user may use a standard clamp 124 to hold the scissors. When using this method, and prior to securing the clamp 124 to the scissor blade, the user may use the abrasive plate 158 to measure the distance from the end of the clamp 124 (i.e., distal end) to the cutting edge of the blade and orient the blade such that the distance is approximately one-half of an inch. After orienting the scissor blade within the clamp 124, the user shall tighten the clamp 124 by rotating the clamping screw 134 with the specialized wrench 200 to securely mount the blade to the apparatus 100.Mounting Option C

[0089] To mount a blade pursuant to mounting option C 154c, the blade is secured to the apparatus 100 by applying a specialized wood chisel (or plane blade) clamp 124 to the blade, preferably on the right side of the beam 122 (as depicted in FIG. 24). The user inserts the chisel or plane blade through the slot of the beam 122 and between the first edge 142 and second edge 144 of the clamp 124. Prior to securing the first edge 142 and second edge 144 to the blade, the user shall use the abrasive plate 158 to measure the distance from the end first 142 or second edge 144 of the clamp 124 to the cutting edge of the chisel or plane blade and orient the blade and clamp 124 such that the distance is approximately one and one-quarter inches (as depicted in FIG. 25). After orienting the blade, the user shall tighten the first edge and second edge 142, 144 of the clamp 124 by rotating the clamping screw 134 to securely mount the blade to the apparatus. In an embodiment, the user may use the specialized wrench 200 to rotate the clamping screw 134.

[0090] If necessary, a user can extend the distance between the first edge and second edge 142, 144 of the clamp 124 up to two inches. Mounting option C 154c is not suitable for plane blades having a thickness of greater than seven millimeters.Selecting a Sharpening Angle

[0091] After a user mounts the blade to the apparatus 100, the user selects a desired sharpening angle to sharpen the blade.

[0092] If a user knows the angle of the blade, the user loosens the angle guide rod knob 118, and moves the angle guide rod 114 up or down until the red liner marker 116 aligns with the indicia of the specified sharpening angle value 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d matching the angle of the blade.

[0093] If the blade is in mounting position A 154a, the user shall use the first sharpening angle value indicia 112a to set the sharpening angle. If the blade is in mounting position B 154b, the user shall use the second sharpening angle value indicia 112b to set the sharpening angle. If the blade is in mounting position C 154c, the user shall use the third sharpening angle value indicia 112c to set the sharpening angle. If the blade is in mounting position D 154d, the user shall use the fourth sharpening angle value indicia 112d to set the sharpening angle. Once the red liner marker 116 aligns with the desired angle on the appropriate sharpening angle value indicia 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d.

[0094] Mounting position A 154a and its corresponding angle value indicia 112a allow for a user to select a sharpening angle between 10 and 35 degrees. Mounting position B 154b and its corresponding angle value indicia 112b allow for a user to select a sharpening angle between 10 and 30 degrees. Mounting position C 154c and its corresponding angle value indicia 112c allow for a user to select a sharpening angle of between 15 and 45 degrees. Mounting position D 154d and its corresponding angle value indicia 112d allow for a user to select a sharpening angle between 35 and 70 degrees.

[0095] If a user does not know the angle of the blade, the user may mount the blade to the apparatus 100 in one of the mounting positions 154a, 154b, 154c, 154d described above and mark the cutting edge of the blade with a marker. After marking the cutting edge of the blade, the user can adjust the angle guide rod 114 up or down. Adjusting the angle guide will similarly adjust the height of the pivot joint 110 and attached sharpening rod 106 and change the angle at which the sharpening rod 106 approaches the cutting edge of the blade. The user can then rotate the sharpening rod 106 and slide the abrasive plate 158 into contact with the blade. A user may gently slide the abrasive plate 158 of the sharpening rod 106 along the marked cutting edge of the blade to observe whether the abrasive surface 160 contacts (and removes) the marker ink. The user shall continue adjusting the angle guide rod 114 until the user discovers the sharpening angle which permits the abrasive surface 160 to remove the marker ink from the cutting edge of the blade. The position of the marker line 116 along the sharpening angle indicia 112a, 112b, 112c, 112d corresponding to the mounting position elected by the user is the sharpening angle of the blade.Sharpening the Blade

[0096] After the user selects the sharpening angle, the user may begin sharpening the blade by applying the abrasive surface 160 of the abrasive plate 158 to the blade. Depending on the needs of the user, the user may select an abrasive plate 158 with an abrasive surface comprised of one of the following materials: electroplated diamond plate of between 300 to 1000 grits, a ceramic plate, a whetstone plate, or a leather strop. In an embodiment, the abrasive surface 160 is an electroplated diamond plate of 325, 600, or 1000 grits.

[0097] The user sharpens the blade by firmly pressing the abrasive surface 160 to the blade and oscillating the sharpening rod 106 across the cutting edge of the blade. In a preferred method of sharpening the blade a user oscillates the sharpening rod 106 back and forth along a linear path of direction.

[0098] Once one surface of the blade is sharpened as desired, a user may flip the knife to expose its second surface by rotating the beam 122 vertically. In the vertical position (depicted in FIG. 2A), the user may rotate the beam 122 one hundred and eighty degrees in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion such that the first end 122a and second end 122b flip positions and return the beam 122 to a functional position (depicted in FIGS. 1A and 1B). The user may then sharpen the second surface of the blade by oscillating the sharpening rod 106 back and forth across the blade in a linear path of direction. Because the user has already selected the appropriate sharpening angle for the blade, no further adjustments are required to sharpen the second surface of the blade.Mounting and Sharpening Alternative Blade Types

[0099] If the width of the blade is greater than 110 millimeters, the blade will likely extend more than two inches beyond the distal end of the clamp 124. However, a user can still use the angle sharpening indicia corresponding to mounting position B 112b, although the sharpening angle indicia will not provide the exact (or correct) sharpening angle value. Instead, a user can mark the cutting edge of the blade with a marker, then adjust the angle guide rod 114 up or down. The user can then gently slide the abrasive plate 158 of the sharpening rod 106 along the marked cutting edge of the blade to observe whether the abrasive surface 160 contacts the marker ink. The user shall continue to adjust the angle guide rod 114 until the user discovers the sharpening angle which permits the abrasive surface 160 to remove the marker ink from the cutting edge of the blade. It is recommended that the user secures the angle guide rod 114 in a fixed position at the discovered angle via the removable fastener 118. The user may then record the position of the marker line 116 along the sharpening angle indicia 112b corresponding to mounting position B 112b. While the recorded angle is technically not an accurate reading, it can be used by the user at a future date when the blade needs to be resharpened.

[0100] If the width of the blade is less than 15 millimeters, the blade will likely fail to extend one-half of an inch beyond the distal end of the clamp 124. However, a user can still use the angle sharpening indicia corresponding to mounting position A 112a, although the sharpening angle indicia will not provide the exact (or correct) sharpening angle value. Instead, a user should orient the blade such that as much of the blade is exposed beyond the distal end of the clamp as possible. Then the user can mark the cutting edge of the blade with a marker and adjust the angle guide rod 114 up or down to match the sharpening angle of the blade. The user may then record the position of the marker line 116 along the sharpening angle indicia 112a corresponding to mounting position A. While the recorded angle is technically not an accurate reading, it can be used by the user at a future date when the blade needs to be resharpened.

[0101] If the width of the blade is less than 0.6 inches (or 15 mm) and a standard clamp 124 cannot securely hold the blade, the user should switch to the mini-clamp 124 (described above). When mounting the blade, the user should ensure that the distance from the distal end of the clamp 124 to the cutting edge is approximately one-sixth of an inch. If the thickness of the blade is less than one millimeter and a 10 degree cutting angle is desired for the blade, the user should use the sharpening angle indicia 112a corresponding to mounting position A. If the thickness of the blade is 2 millimeters, the user should use the sharpening angle indicia 112b corresponding to the mounting position B. However, similar to the above, the sharpening angle indicia will not provide the exact (or correct) sharpening angle value.

[0102] Instead, the user can mark the cutting edge of the blade with a marker and adjust the angle guide rod 114 up or down to match the sharpening angle of the blade. The user may then record the position of the marker line 116 along the relevant sharpening angle indicia 112a, 112b. While the recorded angle is technically not an accurate reading, it can be used by the user at a future date when the blade needs to be resharpened.

[0103] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the marker line 116 is a red marker line 116.
