[0003] This application is related to a European plant breeders' rights application filed on Mar. 13, 2024, application No. 2024 / 0646. The Applicant received the information for the plant breeders' rights application directly from the Inventor.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Geranium plant, botanically known as Geranium macrorrhizum ‘MVNG202130’ and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name, ‘MVNG202130’. ‘MVNG202130’ is a new cultivar of herbaceous perennial grown for use as a garden plant.
[0005] ‘MVNG202130’ arose from an on going breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Warmond, The Netherlands. The goal of the breeding program is to develop new cultivars of Geranium that have healthy growth habits, resistance to disease, and a long lifespan.
[0006] The new cultivar arose from a cross made by the Inventor in Warmond, The Netherlands in May of 2018 between an unnamed and unpatented proprietary selection of Geranium macrorrhizum as the female parent and Geranium macrorrhizum ‘White Ness’ (not patented) as the male parent. The Inventor selected ‘MVNG202130’ as a single unique plant amongst the seedlings that resulted from the above cross in June of 2019.
[0007] Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by tissue culture using meristematic tissue under the direction of the Inventor in Warmond, The Netherlands in August of 2023. Asexual propagation by tissue culture tissue and stem cuttings has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of ‘MVNG202130’. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘MVNG202130’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Geranium.
[0009] 1. ‘MVNG202130’ exhibits a strong and healthy plant habit with disease resistance to Fusarium sp.
[0010] 2. ‘MVNG202130’ exhibits flowers that are large in size and with petals that are light purple-white in color and sepals and stamens that are purple-red in color.
[0011] 3. ‘MVNG202130’ exhibits a floriferous blooming habit.
[0012] The female parent of ‘MVNG202130’ differs from ‘MVNG202130’ in having a less floriferous blooming habit, smaller plant size, and a higher disease susceptibility. The male parent of ‘MVNG202130’ differs from ‘MVNG202130’ in having lighter green foliage, a less robust plant habit, smaller flowers, and a less floriferous blooming habit. ‘MVNG202130’ can be most closely compared to the Geranium macrorrhizum ‘Spessart’ (not patented) and Geranium cantabrigiense ‘Biokovo’ (not patented). ‘Spessart’ is similar to ‘MVNG202130’ in being suitable for use as a ground cover. ‘Spessart’ differs from

[0019] The following is a detailed description of one year-old plants of the new cultivar as grown outdoors in 27-cm containers in Warmond, The Netherlands. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with the 2015 6th edition (2019 reprint) Colour Charts of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
