Abstract
Description
[0001] Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Verbena hybrida.
[0002] Varietal denomination: ‘VEAZ0069’.BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
[0003] The present invention comprises a new Verbena, botanically known as Verbena hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘VEAZ0069’.
[0004] ‘VEAZ0069’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has large sized inflorescences, purple-violet florets of large size, medium green toothed leaves, and a plant habit that is initially upright, then outwardly spreading.
[0005] ‘VEAZ0069’ originated from a cross made in September 2019 in a greenhouse in Amatitlan, Guatemala.
[0006] The female parent was an unpatented proprietary plant ‘VERAW2114-59V’ having a more vigorous habit and more purple flower color. The male parent was an unpatented proprietary plant designated ‘Lanai compact violet with eye’, with smaller plant habit and bicolored florets.
[0007] The resulting seed was sown in February 2020 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands, and ‘VEAZ0069’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in May 2020.
[0008] The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘VEAZ0069’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in June 2020 in a greenhouse in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0009] Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in the fall of 2020, and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘VEAZ0069’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
[0010] ‘VEAZ0069’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.
[0011] A Plant Breeder's Rights for this cultivar has not yet been applied for. ‘VEAZ0069’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained ‘VEAZ0069’ directly from the inventor.
[0012] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Verbena as a new and distinct variety.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0013] The accompanying photographic drawings show typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘VEAZ0069’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
[0014] The photographic drawings in FIG. 1 show a close view of an inflorescence of the new plant, and in FIG. 2 a whole flowering plant.
[0015] The aforementioned photographs were taken in July 2025 in Andijk, The Netherlands. The plants were about 10 weeks old and were grown in 11 cm pots.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
