Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical designation: Helleborus x niger X Helleborus x hybridus.
[0002] Cultivar denomination: ‘HL 1076’.CROSS-REFERENCED TO CLOSELY-RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0003] A European Community Plant Breeder's Rights application for the instant plant was filed by the Inventor / Applicant, Mr. Josef Heuger of Glandorf, Germany, on Nov. 30, 2024, application number 2024 / 2910. Foreign priority is not claimed to this application.
[0004] A United Kingdom Plant Breeder's Rights application for the instant plant was filed by the Inventor / Applicant, Mr. Josef Heuger of Glandorf, Germany, on Aug. 29, 2025, application number 30 / 992. Foreign priority is not claimed to this application.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Helleborus plant, botanically known as Helleborus x niger X Helleborus x hybridus and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘HL 1076’.
[0006] The new Helleborus plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Glandorf, Germany. The objective of the breeding program was to create new uniform Helleborus plants with unique leaf and flower coloration and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses.
[0007] The new Helleborus plant originated from a cross-pollination conducted by the Inventor in Glandorf, Germany in January, 2016 of a proprietary selection of Helleborus x niger identified as code number 001, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent and a proprietary selection of Helleborus x hybridus identified as code number 14-12, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Helleborus plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination grown in a controlled greenhouse environment in Glandorf, Germany in December, 2017.
[0008] Asexual reproduction of the new Helleborus plant by in vitro axillary meristem culture in a controlled environment in Glandorf, Germany since March, 2019 has shown that the unique features of this new Helleborus plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0009] Plants of the newHelleborus have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0010] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘HL 1076’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘HL 1076’ as a new and distinct Helleborus plant:
[0011] 1. Upright to somewhat outwardly spreading and mounded plant habit.
[0012] 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit.
[0013] 3. Dark green-colored leaflets.
[0014] 4. Freely flowering habit.
[0015] 5. Flowers with white-colored sepals with purplish red-colored margins.
[0016] 6. Good garden performance.
[0017] Plants of the new Helleborus differ from plants of the female parent selection in the following characteristics:
[0018] 1. Leaflets of plants of the new Helleborus are lighter green in color than leaflets of plants of the female parent selection.
[0019] 2. Flower sepals of plants of the new Helleborus are white in color with purplish red-colored margins whereas flower sepals of plants of the female parent selection are solid white in color.
[0020] Plants of the new Helleborus differ from plants of the male parent selection in the following characteristics:
[0021] 1. Plants of the new Helleborus are not as vigorous as plants of the male parent selection.
[0022] 2. Leaflets of plants of the new Helleborus are darker green in color than leaflets of plants of the male parent selection.
[0023] Plants of the new Helleborus can also be compared to plants of Helleborus x niger X Helleborus x hybridus ‘HL 1010’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 34,932. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Helleborus differ primarily from plants of ‘HL 1010’ in the following characteristics:
[0024] 1. Leaflets of plants of the new Helleborus are lighter green in color than leaflets of plants of ‘HL 1010’.
[0025] 2. Flower sepals of plants of the new Helleborus are white in color with purplish red-colored margins whereas flower sepals of plants of ‘HL 1010’ are purplish red in color.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0026] The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Helleborus plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Helleborus plant.
[0027] The photograph on the first sheet (FIG. 1) is a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘HL 1076’ grown in a container.
[0028] The photograph at the left of the second sheet (FIG. 2) is a close-up view of a typical flower of ‘HL 1076’.
[0029] The photograph at the right of the second sheet (FIG. 3) is a close-up view of typical leaflets of ‘HL 1076’.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0030] The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the winter in 17-cm containers in a glass-covered greenhouse in Glandorf, Germany and under cultural practices typical of commercial Helleborus production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 12° C. to 32° C. and night temperatures ranged from 5° C. to 12° C. Plants were 48 weeks old when the photographs were taken and 14 months old when the detailed description was taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, Sixth Edition (2019 reprint), except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
