Abstract
Description
[0001] Latin name of the genus and species of the plant claimed: Lithodora diffusa.
[0002] Varietal denomination: ‘LTHZ0001’.BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT
[0003] The present invention comprises a new Lithodora, botanically known as Lithodora diffusa, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘LTHZ0001’.
[0004] ‘LTHZ0001’ is a product of a planned breeding program. The new cultivar has medium sized flowers, a dense branching plant, a blue flower color, medium early flowering, and a semi trailing to mounding plant habit.
[0005] ‘LTHZ0001’ originated from a hybridization made in April 2015 in a controlled breeding environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. The female parent was the proprietary selection ‘J6656-1V’. Compared to ‘LTHZ0001’, it is less vigorous, has a lighter blue flower color, is earlier flowering and has a more trailing plant habit.
[0006] The male parent of ‘LTHZ0001’ was the proprietary selection ‘J6657-1V’; a plant with very small flowers purple to blue flower color, somewhat less vigorous and with a similar plant habit.
[0007] The resulting seeds were sown in August 2015. ‘LTHZ0001’ was selected as one flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross in March 2016 in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
[0008] The first act of asexual reproduction of ‘LTHZ0001’ was accomplished when vegetative cuttings were propagated from the initial selection in March 2016 in a controlled environment in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.BRIEF SUMMARY OF INVENTION
[0009] Horticultural examination of plants grown from cuttings of the plant initiated in March 2016 and continuing thereafter, has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for ‘LTHZ0001’ are firmly fixed and are retained through successive generations of asexual reproduction.
[0010] ‘LTHZ0001’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary significantly with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, and day length.
[0011] A Plant Breeder's Right for this cultivar has not yet been applied for. ‘LTHZ0001’ has not been made publicly available prior to the effective filing date of this application, notwithstanding any disclosure that may have been made less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application by the inventor or another who obtained ‘LTHZ0001’ directly from the inventor.
[0012] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be basic characteristics of the new variety. The combination of these characteristics distinguishes this Lithodora as a new and distinct variety.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0013] The accompanying photographic drawing shows typical flower and foliage characteristics of ‘LTHZ0001’ with colors being as true as possible with an illustration of this type.
[0014] The photographic drawing shows in
[0015] FIG. 1 a flowering plant of the new variety and in
[0016] FIG. 2 a close-up of the flowers.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0017] The aforementioned photographs were taken on Apr. 5, 2021 from plants growing indoor in 14 cm pots in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. These plants were approximately 25 weeks of age.
[0018] The plant descriptions and measurements were taken in December 2024 in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands on plants grown in 12.5 cm pots. These plants were about 16 weeks old.
[0019] Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.) 2001.
