Description

[0001] Botanical designation: Petunia x hybrida.

[0002] Cultivar denomination: ‘SURF 271’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Petunia plant, botanically known as Petunia x hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Surf 271’.

[0004] The new Petunia plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventors in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. The objective of the breeding program is to create new outwardly spreading and freely-branching habit Petunia plants with numerous pink-colored flowers.

[0005] The new Petunia plant originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventors in July, 2012 in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan of a proprietary selection of Petunia x hybrida identified as code designation PV553, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with a proprietary selection of Petunia x hybrida identified as code designation Px8317-2, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Petunia plant was discovered and selected by the Inventors as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan in May, 2017.

[0006] Asexual reproduction of the new Petunia plant by terminal vegetative cuttings in a controlled greenhouse environment in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan since April, 2023 has shown that the unique features of this new Petunia plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] Plants of the new Petunia have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

[0008] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Surf 271’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Surf 271’ as a new and distinct Petunia plant:

[0009] 1. Compact, upright to outwardly spreading and eventually trailing plant habit.

[0010] 2. Vigorous growth habit.

[0011] 3. Freely branching habit.

[0012] 4. Freely flowering habit.

[0013] 5. Long flowering period.

[0014] 6. Single-type flowers with purplish pink-colored petals.

[0015] Plants of the new Petunia can be compared to plants of the female parent selection. Plants of the new Petunia differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in plant habit as plants of the new Petunia are more trailing than and not as mounding as plants of the female parent selection. In addition, plants of the new Petunia have smaller flowers than plants of the female parent selection.

[0016] Plants of the new Petunia can be compared to plants of the male parent selection. Plants of the new Petunia differ primarily from plants of the male parent selection in the following characteristics:

[0017] 1. Plants of the new Petunia are more compact than and not as vigorous as plants of the male parent selection.

[0018] 2. Plants of the new Petunia are more trailing than and not as mounding as plants of the male parent selection.

[0019] 3. Plants of the new Petunia have larger flowers than plants of the male parent selection.

[0020] Plants of the new Petunia can also be compared to plants of the Petunia x hybrida ‘Sunsurf Akatora’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 23,970. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Petunia and ‘Sunsurf Akatora’ differ primarily in the following characteristics:

[0021] 1. Plants of the new Petunia are more compact than plants of ‘Sunsurf Akatora’.

[0022] 2. Plants of the new Petunia have larger flowers than plants of ‘Sunsurf Akatora’.

[0023] 3. Plants of the new Petunia and ‘Sunsurf Akatora’ differ in flower petal color as flower petals of plants of the new Petunia are purplish pink in color whereas flowers of plants of ‘Sunsurf Akatora’ have red-colored petals.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

[0027] The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the spring in 24-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan and under cultural practices typical of commercial Petunia production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 23° C. and night temperatures averaged 13° C. Plants were six months old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
