Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical classification: Dicentra spectabilis.
[0002] Variety denomination: ‘Hearts on Fire’.STATEMENT REGARDING PRIOR DISCLOSURES UNDER 37 CFR 1.77(B)(6)
[0003] The Applicant asserts that no publications or advertisements relating to sales, offers for sale, or public distribution occurred more than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application. The first offer for sale was by Walters Gardens, Inc. on Apr. 4, 2025, to Mariani Nursery. Walters Gardens, Inc. obtained the new plant and all information about the new plant directly from the inventor. Any information or disclosure about the claimed plant less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application would have been obtained directly or indirectly from the Inventor and would be a 35 U.S.C. 102(b) exception.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The present invention relates to the new and distinct Dicentra spectabilis ‘Hearts on Fire’ hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Hearts on Fire’ and the new plant. ‘Hearts on Fire’ is the result of a self-pollination of the proprietary unnamed hybrid known only by the breeder code 12-8-1 (not patented) on Jun. 19, 2019, at a wholesale perennial nursery in Zeeland, Michigan, USA. Through trials at a wholesale perennial nursery the plant was referred to by the to by the code 19-2-4. The new plant has been successfully asexually propagated initially by stem cuttings in 2021 followed by shoot tip tissue culture at the same nursery in Zeeland, Michigan. Both these asexual propagation systems have been found to produce stable and identical plants that maintain all the unique characteristics of the original plant in successive generations.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0005] The new plant can be most closely compared with: ‘Ruby Gold’ (not patented), ‘Gold Heart’ (not patented), and ‘Hordival’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 22,739.
[0006] ‘Ruby Gold’ has more chartreuse foliage without the reddish blush on the new leaves, the flowers are slightly lighter reddish, the outer petal apices are more perpendicular to the center axis, the peduncles and pedicels less intense reddish coloration. ‘Gold Heart’ lighter pinkish flowers and less dense and more open habit, and the foliage does not have the burgundy tinting. ‘Hordival’ has a larger habit, the foliage is deep green colored, and the flowers are more orangish-red.
[0007] The parent plant has a taller more open habit and the flowers were not as dark reddish coloration.
[0008] The new plant, ‘Hearts on Fire’, is unique from all Old-fashioned Bleeding Hearts known to the inventor by the following combined traits:
[0009] 1. Large habit with deeply lobed triternate foliage emerges bright gold with reddish blush;
[0010] 2. Large flowers are heart-shaped deep reddish with white center petals beginning in late spring and continuing for four to five weeks;
[0011] 3. Racemes arch outwardly.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0012] The color drawings illustrate the overall characteristics of the new plant and demonstrate the overall appearance of the new plant including the unique traits as a four-year-old plant growing in a full-sun trial garden in Zeeland, Michigan with supplemental water and fertilizer as needed. The colors are as true as reasonably possible given the technology available. The colors are as accurate as reasonably possible with color reproductions. Ambient light, spectrum, temperature, source, duration and direction may cause minor variation in appearance.
[0013] FIG. 1 shows the new plant grown in a partial-sun trial garden.
[0014] FIG. 2 shows close-up of the young foliage with reddish blush.
[0015] FIG. 3 shows a close-up of the flowers and buds in decreasing maturity from left to right.DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
