Abstract

A new and distinct Grapevine of Vitis vinifera plant named ‘LATE BEAR’, which has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for the new variety are firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of asexual propagation. The new variety is primarily adapted to the growing conditions in full sunlight grown in a Mediterranean, hot summer climate. The new variety is particularly characterized by a late maturing, light green, seedless very large berry.

Description

[0001] Genus and species of the plant claimed: Vitis vinifera L.

[0002] Variety: ‘LATE BEAR’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of Grapevine plant, botanically known as Vitis vinifera of the Vitaceae family, and hereinafter referred to by the variety name ‘LATE BEAR’.

[0004] The new Vitis vinifera variety is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the inventor, Hanan Bazak, in Karmei Yossef, Gezer region in HaShephelah, Israel. The objective of the breeding program was to develop a new Vitis vinifera variety with a large, seedless, late ripening, easy detachable berry with firm flesh, excellent taste and with low susceptibility to Grape Sour Rot.

[0005] The new Vitis vinifera variety originated from a cross made by the inventor in 2012 in Karmei Yossef, Gezer region in HaShephelah, Israel. The female or seed parent is the Vitis vinifera designated ‘H 4795’ (unpatented). The male or pollen parent is the Vitis vinifera designated ‘H 6367’, (unpatented). The new Vitis vinifera ‘LATE BEAR’ was observed and selected by the inventor within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment in 2012 in Karmei Yossef, Gezer region in HaShephelah, Israel.

[0006] Asexual propagation of the new Vitis vinifera variety by rooting of cuttings was first performed in 2018 in Karmei Yossef, Gezer region in HaShephelah, Israel., and has demonstrated that the combination of characteristics as herein disclosed for the new variety are firmly fixed and retained through successive generations of asexual propagation. The new variety propagates true-to-type.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0007] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be characteristics of ‘LATE BEAR’ which in combination distinguish this Grapevine plant as a new, unique and distinct variety:

[0008] 1. Berry ripening time: late-season.

[0009] 2. Berry shape: long obovoid.

[0010] 3. Berry skin color: greenish yellow.

[0011] 4. Berry flesh flavor: none.

[0012] 5. Berry seed formation: mainly seedless with some rudimentary seeds.

[0013] In comparison to the parental varieties, Female or seed parent ‘H 4795’ (unpatented) and the Male or pollen parent ‘H 6367’ (unpatented), ‘LATE BEAR’ differs primarily in the traits listed in Table 1.

[0015] Of the many well-known commercial varieties known to the present inventor, the most similar in comparison to the new Vitis vinifera ‘LATE BEAR’ is Vitis vinifera ‘AUTUMN KING’ (U.S. Plant Pat. No. 16,284 P2) which differs from the new Grapevine

[0018] The accompanying photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Vitis vinifera variety ‘LATE BEAR’ showing the colors as true as is reasonably possible with colored reproductions of this type.

[0019] Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed morphological description, which accurately describes the color of ‘LATE BEAR’.

[0020] Photograph 1 —shows a typical leaf of ‘LATE BEAR’.

[0021] Photograph 2 —shows a typical fruit bunch of ‘LATE BEAR’.

[0022] Photograph 3 —shows a typical berry of ‘LATE BEAR’.

[0023] Photograph 4 —shows a typical woody shoot of ‘LATE BEAR’.DETAILED MORPHOLOGICAAL DESCRIPTION

[0024] The new Vitis vinifera ‘LATE BEAR’ has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype of the new variety may vary with variations in environment such as temperature, light intensity, day length, soil or pruning without any change in the genotype of the Grapevine plant.

[0025] The aforementioned photographs, together with the following observations, measurements and values describe plants / trees of ‘LATE BEAR’ as grown in the vineyard in Karmei Yossef, Gezer region in HaShephelah, Israel—under conditions which closely approximate those generally used in commercial practice.

[0026] Unless otherwise stated, the detailed morphological description includes observations, measurements and values taken from 2023 to 2025 and based on 10 five-year-old ‘LATE BEAR’ plants grown in the vineyard in Karmei Yossef, Gezer region in HaShephelah, Israel. Quantified measurements are expressed as an average or a range of measurements taken from a number of plants of ‘LATE BEAR’. The measurements of any individual plant, or any group of plants, of the new variety may vary from the stated average or range.

[0027] Color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart (R.H.S.), edition 1986, except where general colors of ordinary significance are used. Color values were taken under daylight conditions in full sunlight in location, region, Israel.

[0028] All of the plants of ‘LATE BEAR’, insofar as they have been observed, have been consistent in all the characteristics described below.
