Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical denomination: Salvia hybrid.
[0002] Cultivar designation: ‘Dark Sky’.STATEMENT REGARDING PRIOR DISCLOSURES UNDER 37 CFR 1.77(B)(6)
[0003] The first offer for sale of Salvia ‘Dark Sky’ was Walters Gardens, Inc. to Centerton Nursery, Inc. on Apr. 8, 2025. The new plant was later disclosed in the form of a photograph and brief description on a website operated by Walters Gardens, Inc. on Dec. 1, 2025. Walters Gardens, Inc. obtained the plant and all information relating thereto from the inventor. No plants of Salvia ‘Dark Sky’ have been sold in this country or anywhere in the world, nor has any disclosure of the new plant been made, more than one year prior to the filing date of this application, and such sale or disclosure would be a 35 U.S.C. § 102(b) exception.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of ornamental sage plant hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name Salvia ‘Dark Sky’ or as the new plant. The new plant was a single seedling selection from a cross between the proprietary hybrid known only as 19-9-1 (not patented) as the female or seed parent and the proprietary hybrid known only as 15-9-2 (not patented) as the male parent is at a wholesale perennial nursery in Zeeland, Michigan, USA. The cross was performed on Jul. 4, 2020, the seed was collected on Aug. 24, 2020, and sown at the same nursery. The new plant was initially evaluated in the summer of 2021 and assigned the breeder code 20-3-9 through the trial process prior to assigning the cultivar name.
[0005] The new Salvia was further evaluated and asexually propagated initially by division in 2021 and later by basal cuttings taken at the same nursery in Zeeland, Michigan. Evaluation of these and further cutting grown plants shows that Salvia ‘Dark Sky’ continues to be stable and produce true to type plants in successive generations of asexual propagation.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] Plants of Salvia ‘Dark Sky’ have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature, nutrition and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0007] The closest comparison plants known to the inventor are: ‘Big Sky’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 37,290, ‘Evening Attire’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 32,573, ‘Madeline’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 20,456, and ‘Midnight Model’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 29,498.
[0008] ‘Big Sky’ has a slightly taller and broader habit and the flowers are similar size but lighter violet-blue colored. ‘Evening Attire’ has a smaller habit, smaller foliage, flower buds of dark violet-blue, and flowers that are dark violet-blue. ‘Madeline’ has a larger more open habit, and the smaller flowers are two-toned with white and dark bluish-purple. ‘Midnight Model’ has smaller flowers that are violet-blue with smaller foliage on smaller plants. Each of the listed comparison plants flowers earlier in the season than the new plant.
[0009] The female parent is much taller with flowers that are a lighter bluish-purple. The male parent is also much taller, has dark blue flowers and the flowering season is later. Both parents had flower verticils that are spaced further apart.
[0010] The following characteristics in combination distinguish Saliva ‘Dark Sky’ as a new and distinct cultivar from all other cultivars known to the inventor:
[0011] 1. Large, mounded, vigorous, and winter-hardy habit, herbaceous perennial;
[0012] 2. Large flowers of deep indigo-blue densely arranged in verticils;
[0013] 3. Flowering on stiff, upright, heavily-branched panicles beginning in late spring without vernalization;
[0014] 4. Stems and sepals have purplish anthocyanin pigmentation in high ultraviolet light;
[0015] 5. Large, rugose, clean, dark-green foliage.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0016] The photographs of the new plant demonstrate the unique traits and the overall appearance of Salvia ‘Dark Sky’. The colors are as accurate as reasonably possible with color reproductions. Variation in ambient light spectrum, source and direction may cause the appearance of minor variation in color. The plant used in the photographs was a three-year-old plant grown at a wholesale perennial nursery in Zeeland, Michigan with supplemental water and fertilizer when needed.
[0017] FIG. 1 shows the plant habit in full flower in a an open, full-sun trial garden landscape.
[0018] FIG. 2 shows a close-up of the flower scape with the buds, flowers, stems and calyxes in a partially shaded greenhouse.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0019] The following descriptions and color references except where common dictionary terms are used are based on the 2015 edition of The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart. Salvia ‘Dark Sky’ has not been observed under all possible environments. The phenotype may vary slightly with different growing environments such as temperature, light, fertility, soil pH, moisture and plant maturity levels, but without any change in the genotype.
