Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical designation: Astilbe chinensis.
[0002] Cultivar denomination: ‘HVDM18P’.CROSS-REFERENCED TO CLOSELY-RELATED APPLICATION
[0003] A European Community Plant Breeder's Rights application for the instant plant was filed by the Inventor's company, Maatschap Dhr. J.W.M. van der Meer en Mw. E.H. van der Meer-Godijn of Nieuwe Wetering, The Netherlands on Feb. 10, 2026, application number 2437541, and to date, not published. Foreign priority is not claimed to this European Community Plant Breeder's Rights application.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Astilbe, botanically known as Astilbe chinensis and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘HVDM18P’.
[0005] The new Astilbe plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Nieuwe Wetering, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program was to create new compact, uniform and freely flowering Astilbe plants with attractive leaf and flower coloration.
[0006] The new Astilbe plant originated from a cross-pollination in 2018 in Nieuwe Wetering, The Netherlands, of two unidentified seedling selections of Astilbe chinensis, not patented. The new Astilbe plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in Nieuwe Wetering, The Netherlands in June, 2020.
[0007] Asexual reproduction of the new Astilbe plant by vegetative divisions in a controlled nursery environment in Nieuwe Wetering, The Netherlands since February, 2021, has shown that the unique features of this new Astilbe plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0008] Plants of the new Astilbe have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0009] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘HVDM18P’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘HVDM18P’ as a new and distinct Astilbe plant:
[0010] 1. Broadly upright plant habit with upright inflorescences.
[0011] 2. Vigorous growth habit.
[0012] 3. Thick and strong stems.
[0013] 4. Dark green-colored leaves.
[0014] 5. Freely and uniformly flowering habit.
[0015] 6. Long flowering period.
[0016] 7. Tall and broad inflorescences.
[0017] 8. Bright purple-colored flowers on strong peduncles.
[0018] 9. Good container and garden performance.
[0019] Plants of the new Astilbe differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in the following characteristics:
[0020] 1. Plants of the new Astilbe are taller than plants of the female parent selection.
[0021] 2. Inflorescences of plants of the new Astilbe are taller and broader than inflorescences of plants of the female parent selection.
[0022] 3. Flowers of plants of the new Astilbe are lighter purple in color than flowers of plants of the female parent selection.
[0023] Plants of the new Astilbe differ primarily from plants of the male parent selection in the following characteristics:
[0024] 1. Plants of the new Astilbe are taller than plants of the male parent selection.
[0025] 2. Inflorescences of plants of the new Astilbe are taller and broader than inflorescences of plants of the male parent selection.
[0026] Plants of the new Astilbe can be compared to plants of Astilbe chinensis ‘Visions’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Astilbe and ‘Visions’ differ primarily in the following characteristics:
[0027] 1. Plants of the new Astilbe are taller than plants of ‘Visions’.
[0028] 2. Inflorescences of plants of the new Astilbe are broader than inflorescences of plants of ‘Visions’.
[0029] 3. Flowers of plants of the new Astilbe are lighter purple in color than flowers of plants of ‘Visions’.
[0030] Plants of the new Astilbe can also be compared to plants of Astilbe chinensis ‘Purpurkerze’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Astilbe and ‘Purpurkerze’ differ primarily in the following characteristics:
[0031] 1. Plants of the new Astilbe are taller than plants of ‘Purpurkerze’.
[0032] 2. Inflorescences of plants of the new Astilbe are broader than inflorescences of plants of ‘Purpurkerze’.
[0033] 3. Flowers of plants of the new Astilbe are bright purple in color whereas flowers of plants of ‘Purpurkerze’ are dark pink in color.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0034] The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Astilbe plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Astilbe plant.
[0035] The photograph on the first sheet (FIG. 1) is a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘HVDM18P’ grown in a container.
[0036] The photograph on the second sheet (FIG. 2) is a close-up view of typical leaves and leaflets of ‘HVDM18P’.
[0037] The photograph on the third sheet (FIG. 3) is a close-up view of typical inflorescences of ‘HVDM18P’.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0038] The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the late summer and early autumn in 21-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Nieuwe Wetering, The Netherlands and under cultural practices typical of commercial Astilbe production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 18° C. to 32° C. and night temperatures ranged from 10° C. to 20° C. Plants were two years old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, Sixth Edition, 2019 reprint, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
