Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical designation: Anemone hupehensis.
[0002] Cultivar denomination: ‘IFANDWNB’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Anemone, botanically known as Anemone hupehensis and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘IFANDWNB’.
[0004] The new Anemone plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program is to create new vigorous and fast-growing Anemone plants with numerous attractive flowers.
[0005] The new Anemone plant originated from an open-pollination in July, 2013 in a controlled greenhouse environment in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands of Anemone hupehensis ‘IFANFJ’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 31,777, as the female, or seed, parent with an unknown proprietary selection of Anemone hupehensis as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Anemone plant was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated open-pollination controlled greenhouse environment in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands in August, 2024.
[0006] Asexual reproduction of the new Anemone by in vitro meristem culture in a controlled environment in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands since October, 2024 has shown that the unique features of this new Anemone plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] Plants of the new Anemone have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and various cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0008] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘IFANDWNB’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘IFANDWNB’ as a new and distinct Anemone plant:
[0009] 1. Compact, upright and uniform plant habit.
[0010] 2. Moderately vigorous to vigorous growth habit.
[0011] 3. Early and freely flowering habit.
[0012] 4. Long flowering period.
[0013] 5. Single-type flowers that are purplish red in color.
[0014] 6. Good garden performance.
[0015] Plants of the new Anemone can be compared to plants of the female parent, ‘IFANFJ’. Plants of the new Anemone differ primarily from plants of ‘IFANFJ’ in the following characteristics:
[0016] 1. Plants of the new Anemone are more compact than plants of ‘IFANFJ’.
[0017] 2. Plants of the new Anemone flower earlier than plants of ‘IFANFJ’.
[0018] 3. Flowers of plants of the new Anemone are darker in color than flowers of plants of ‘IFANFJ’.
[0019] Plants of the new Anemone can be compared to plants of Anemone hupehensis ‘IFANFA’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 34,891. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Anemone and ‘IFANFA’ differ primarily in the following characteristics:
[0020] 1. Plants of the new Anemone are more compact than plants of ‘IFANFA’.
[0021] 2. Plants of the new Anemone flower earlier than plants of ‘IFANFA’.
[0022] 3. Flowers of plants of the new Anemone have fewer sepals than flowers of plants of ‘IFANFA’.
[0023] 4. Flowers of plants of the new Anemone are darker in color than flowers of plants of ‘IFANFA’.
[0024] Plants of the new Anemone can be compared to plants of Anemone hupehensis ‘IFANELS’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Anemone and ‘IFANELS’ differ primarily in the following characteristics:
[0025] 1. Plants of the new Anemone are more compact than plants of ‘IFANELS’.
[0026] 2. Plants of the new Anemone flower earlier than plants of ‘IFANELS’.
[0027] 3. Flowers of plants of the new Anemone are purplish red in color whereas flowers of plants of ‘IFANELS’ are white in color.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0028] The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Anemone plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Anemone plant.
[0029] The photograph on the first sheet (FIG. 1) is a side perspective view of a typical plant of ‘IFANDWNB’ grown in a container.
[0030] The photograph on the second sheet (FIG. 2) is a close-up view of typical leaves of ‘IFANDWNB’.
[0031] The photograph on the third sheet (FIG. 3) is a close-up view of typical flowers of ‘IFANDWNB’.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0032] The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the late summer / early autumn in 15-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands and under cultural practices typical of commercial Anemone production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 16° C. to 30° C. and night temperatures ranged from 8° C. to 18° C. Plants were eight months old when the photographs and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
