Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical classification: Prunus hybrid.
[0002] Variety denomination: ‘GEE001’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Prunus hybrid and will be referred to hereafter by its cultivar name, ‘GEE001’. ‘GEE001’ is a new cultivar of sweet cherry tree grown an ornamental landscape.
[0004] The new cultivar was discovered by the Inventor in May of 2021 as a naturally occurring branch mutation of Prunus ‘Snofozam’ (not patented) in a trial garden in Jackson, Michigan.
[0005] Asexual propagation of the new cultivar was first accomplished by chip budding by the Inventor in Boring, Oregon in August of 2021. Asexual propagation by chip budding and grafting has determined that the characteristics of the new cultivar are stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and represent the characteristics of the new cultivar. These attributes in combination distinguish ‘GEE001’ as a unique cultivar of cherry tree.
[0007] 1. ‘GEE001’ exhibits flower buds that are pink in color and open to flowers that are white and blushed with pink in color.
[0008] 2. ‘GEE001’ exhibits foliage that emerges apricot in color, changing to variegation green, yellow, and white in color and maturing to variegation green and white in color.
[0009] The mutation parent of ‘GEE001’ differs from ‘GEE001’ in having white flowers and non-variegated foliage. ‘GEE001’ can be most closely compared to the cultivars Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’ (not patented) and Prunus x yedoensis ‘Shidare-Yoshino’ (not patented). ‘Pendula’ is similar to ‘GEE001’ in having flowers that are pink in color and a weeping plant habit. ‘Pendula’ differs from ‘GEE001’ in having flowers with more petals that are deeper pink in color, green leaves that are not variegated, and a larger plant size. ‘Shidare-Yoshino’ is similar to ‘GEE001’ in having a weeping plant habit. ‘Shidare-Yoshino’ differs from ‘GEE001’ in having white flowers, a larger plant size, and green foliage that are not variegated.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0010] The accompanying color photographs illustrate the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of the new Prunus. The photographs were taken of 1-year-old plants (from a rooted graft) of the new cultivar as grown in a garden in Jackson, Michigan.
[0011] The photograph in FIG. 1 provides a side view of ‘GEE001’.
[0012] The photograph in FIG. 2 provides a close-up, side view of ‘GEE001’ in bloom.
[0013] The photograph in FIG. 3 provides a close-up view of flowers of ‘GEE001’.
[0014] The photograph in FIG. 4 provides a close-up view of the foliage of ‘GEE001’.
[0015] The colors in the photographs are as close as possible with the digital photography and printing techniques utilized and the color codes in the detailed botanical description accurately describe the new Prunus. DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0016] The following is a detailed description of three-year-old plants the new Prunus as grown in 10-gallon containers in Jackson, Michigan. The phenotype of the new cultivar may vary with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, as it has not been tested under all possible environmental conditions. The color determination is in accordance with The 2015 Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
