Abstract
Description
[0001] Botanical designation: Mandevilla hybrida.
[0002] Cultivar denomination: ‘SUNPA 424’.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Mandevilla plant, botanically known as Mandevilla hybrida and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Sunpa 424’.
[0004] The new Mandevilla plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventors in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new Mandevilla plants with a climbing plant habit and numerous pink-colored flowers.
[0005] The new Mandevilla plant originated from a cross-pollination by the Inventors in May, 2015 in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan of a proprietary selection of Mandevilla hybrida identified as code number 12M162, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with a proprietary selection of Mandevilla hybrida identified as code number 10M490, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Mandevilla plant was discovered and selected by the Inventors as a single flowering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination grown in a controlled greenhouse environment in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan in September, 2018.
[0006] Asexual reproduction of the new Mandevilla plant by terminal vegetative cuttings in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan since March, 2019 has shown that the unique features of this new Mandevilla plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0007] Plants of the new Mandevilla have not been observed under all possible combinations of environmental conditions and cultural practices. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environmental conditions such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.
[0008] The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Sunpa 424’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Sunpa 424’ as a new and distinct Mandevilla plant:
[0009] 1. Climbing plant habit.
[0010] 2. Vigorous growth habit.
[0011] 3. Freely branching habit.
[0012] 4. Freely flowering habit.
[0013] 5. Long flowering period.
[0014] 6. Medium-sized purplish red-colored flowers.
[0015] 7. Good garden performance.
[0016] Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the female selection parent. Plants of the new Mandevilla differ primarily from plants of the female parent selection in the following characteristics:
[0017] 1. Plants of the new Mandevilla have longer leaves than plants of the female parent selection.
[0018] 2. Plants of the new Mandevilla have larger flowers than plants of the female parent selection.
[0019] Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the male selection parent. Plants of the new Mandevilla differ primarily from plants of the male parent selection in the following characteristics:
[0020] 1. Plants of the new Mandevilla have shorter leaves than plants of the male parent selection.
[0021] 2. Plants of the new Mandevilla have smaller flowers than plants of the male parent selection.
[0022] Plants of the new Mandevilla can be compared to plants of the Mandevilla hybrida ‘Sunparaprero’, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 19,399. In side-by-side comparisons, plants of the new Mandevilla differ from plants of ‘Sunparaprero’ in the following characteristics:
[0023] 1. Plants of the new Mandevilla have shorter internodes than plants of ‘Sunparaprero’.
[0024] 2. Leaf arrangement of plants of the new Mandevilla is decussate whereas leaf arrangement of plants of ‘Sunparaprero’ is opposite.
[0025] 3. Plants of the new Mandevilla have longer leaves than plants of ‘Sunparaprero’.
[0026] 4. Plants of the new Mandevilla have smaller flowers than plants of ‘Sunparaprero’.
[0027] 5. Flower petals of plants of the new Mandevilla are free and not imbricate whereas flower petals of plants of ‘Sunparaprero’ are imbricate.
[0028] 6. Flower petals of plants of the new Mandevilla are purplish red in color whereas flower petals of plants of ‘Sunparaprero’ are dark purplish pink in color.
[0029] 7. Plants of the new Mandevilla have shorter peduncles than plants of ‘Sunparaprero’.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS
[0030] The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Mandevilla plant showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the actual colors of the new Mandevilla plant.
[0031] The photograph on the first sheet (FIG. 1) is a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Sunpa 424’ grown in a container.
[0032] The photograph on the second sheet (FIG. 2) is a close-up view of a typical flower of ‘Sunpa 424’.DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
[0033] The aforementioned photographs and following observations, measurements and values describe plants grown during the late summer in 15-cm containers in an outdoor nursery in Higashiomi, Shiga, Japan and under cultural practices typical of commercial Mandevilla production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures averaged 25° C. and night temperatures averaged 15° C. Plants were six months from planting rooted young plants when the photographs and the detailed description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2015 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
