Description

[0001] Botanical classification: Dicentra hybrid.

[0002] Variety denomination: ‘Passion Hearts’.STATEMENT REGARDING PRIOR DISCLOSURES UNDER 37 CFR 1.77(b)(6)

[0003] The Applicant asserts that no publications or advertisements relating to sales, offers for sale, or public distribution occurred more than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application. The first offer for sale was by Walters Gardens, Inc. on Oct. 15, 2024, to North Coast Perennials. Walters Gardens, Inc. obtained the new plant and all information about the new plant directly from the inventor. Any information or disclosure about the claimed plant less than one year prior to the effective filing date of this application would have been obtained directly or indirectly from the Inventor and would be a 35 U.S.C. 102(b) exception.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The present invention relates to the new and distinct Dicentra spectabilis ‘Passion Hearts’ hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Passion Hearts’ and the new plant. ‘Passion Hearts’ is the result of a cross of the proprietary unnamed hybrid known only by the breeder code 15-3-x (not patented) as the female or seed parent x the proprietary unnamed hybrid known only by the breeder code 15-1-1 (not patented) as the male or pollen parent on August 23, 2017, at a wholesale perennial nursery in Zeeland, Michigan, USA. Through trials at a wholesale perennial nursery the plant was referred to by the code 17-10-1. The new plant has been successfully asexually propagated initially by division in 2019 followed by shoot tip tissue culture at the same nursery in Zeeland, Michigan. Both these asexual propagation systems have been found to produce stable and identical plants that maintain all the unique characteristics of the original plant in successive generations.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0005] The new plant can be most closely compared with: ‘Amore Pink’ U.S. Plant Patent No. 25,601, ‘Amore Rose’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 25,623, ‘Candy Hearts’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 14,692, ‘Luxuriant’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 3,324, and ‘Pink Diamonds’ U.S. Plant Pat. No. 32,380.

[0006] ‘Amore Pink’ has fewer flowers per peduncle over a shorter season, the flowers are smaller and more pale purple. ‘Amore Rose’ has fewer flowers per peduncle, flowers for a shorter season, and smaller flowers of darker purplish-red. ‘Candy Hearts’ has shorter peduncles with fewer and smaller flowers, and the habit is smaller. ‘Luxuriant’ has a smaller habit, foliage that is less glaucous and more light green, and the flowers are smaller and lighter pink. ‘Pink Diamonds’ has smaller flowers that are lighter pink.

[0007] The female parent is less floriferous with taller panicles and more open habit. The male parent has more green and less bluish-green foliage and has a darker red flower on shorter panicles. Neither parent was as long lived in the landscape.

[0008] The new plant, ‘Passion Hearts’, is unique from all Fern-leaf Bleeding Hearts known to the inventor by the following combined traits:

[0009] 1. Medium-sized habit with deeply-lobed, triternate, bluish-green foliage;

[0010] 2. Large pendulous flowers are heart-shaped rosy-pink and purplish-red petals;

[0011] 3. Large heavily-branched racemes have numerous flower beginning in late April and continuing for 26 weeks.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0012] The color drawings illustrate the overall characteristics of the new plant and demonstrate the overall appearance of the new plant including the unique traits as a three-year-old plant growing in a full-sun trial garden in Zeeland, Michigan with supplemental water and fertilizer as needed. The colors are as true as reasonably possible given the technology available. The colors are as accurate as reasonably possible with color reproductions. Ambient light, spectrum, temperature, source, duration and direction may cause minor variation in appearance.

[0013] FIG. 1 shows the new plant grown in a full-sun trial garden in early flowering.

[0014] FIG. 2 shows the new plant grown in a full-sun trial garden in mid-season flowering.

[0015] FIG. 3 shows a close-up of the flowers and buds in early flowering.DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
