A METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR OPERATING A SEALING GAS COMPRESSOR USED IN A DIRECT REDUCTION PROCESS INCLUDING: MONITORING A PH LEVEL OF A WATER STREAM USED IN THE SEALING GAS COMPRESSOR, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT THE PH LEVEL OF THE WATER STREAM IS AFFECTED BY A REFORMER COMBUSTION GAS STREAM COMING INTO CONTACT WITH THE WATER STREAM, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT THE MONITORING STAGE IS CARRIED OUT AT ONE OR MORE OF A POINT LOCATED BEFORE THE SEALING GAS COMPRESSOR AND A POINT LOCATED AFTER THE COMPRESSOR; AND ADJUST THE PH LEVEL OF THE WATER STREAM IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN THE PH LEVEL OF THE WATER STREAM WITHIN A PREDETERMINED RANGE BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM THE MONITORING STAGE.THE METHOD INCLUDES MAINTAINING THE PH LEVEL OF THE WATER STREAM AT A POINT LOCATED BEFORE THE SEALING GAS COMPRESSOR IN A RANGE BETWEEN 7.5 AND 10 AS WELL AS MAINTAINING THE PH LEVEL OF THE WATER STREAM AT A POINT LOCATED AFTER THE SEALING GAS COMPRESSOR IN A RANGE BETWEEN 7.8 AND 9.5.
