Abstract

The invention relates to a method for decoding encoded video bitstreams comprising the following steps: The system retrieves the first reference image list of the current slice, represented in the encoded video bit stream, and the second reference image list of the current slice. It then marks the state of the reference image in the decoded picture buffer (DPB) based on the first and second reference image lists when the current slice is the first slice in the current picture to which it belongs. The state of the reference image in the decoded image buffer is one of a number: used for short-term reference, used for long-term reference, or not used for reference. This method also includes the step of using the reference image in the process of reconstructing the current image or the image following the current image when the state of the reference image is used for long-term reference or used for long-term reference.
