Video encoding equipment can capture a combined intraframe / interframe prediction (CUP) indicator; for example, when the MMVD mode indicator indicates that MMVD mode is not used to generate interframe predictions for the CU. Video encoding devices can determine whether triangular merging mode is being used for the CU, for example, based on the MMVD mode indicator and / or the CUP indicator.
