The invention relates to a device comprising a video data decoder circuit configured to decode an input video data stream, a video data decoder that responds to parameter data associated with the input video data stream, parameter data representing a configuration selected from multiple configurations, each configuration defining the decoding properties including one or more bit depths and subsampling formats; The detection circuit is configured to detect the restricted data associated with the input video data stream. The restricted data defines the difference between the decoding attribute applied to the input video data stream and the decoding attribute defined by the configuration indicated by the parameter data, where the restricted data is configured to indicate a difference of zero between the decoding attribute and the zero value of the restricted data; and the control circuit is configured to control the video data decoder to decode the input video data stream to produce a decoded video data stream whose decoding properties are determined by the encoding configuration provided by the parameter data, as modified by the difference determined by the limiting data.
