Abstract
Description
Backplate for supporting a flexible display panel and method for manufacturing the same
[0001] The present invention relates to a flexible display device, and more particularly, to a back plate that supports a flexible display panel in a flexible display device.
[0002] Recently, foldable mobile devices with foldable and unfoldable display screens have gained popularity. Accordingly, active research is being conducted on flexible display devices that can not only be folded and unfolded, but also rolled. Typically, a flexible display device comprises a flexible display panel and a back plate, which supports the flexible display panel from the rear and maintains it in a flat state.
[0003] Patent Publication No. 10-2021-0087604, which serves as the background for the present invention, describes a metal-based backplate. Metallic backplates, which are electrically conductive, can absorb electromagnetic signals, potentially causing problems with the operation of handwriting recognition pens. To address this issue, backplates made of electrically insulating carbon fiber resin or CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) composite materials are used. However, due to the inherent properties of composite materials, processing is very difficult, limiting the manufacturing process for implementing fine processes. The currently used sanding process suffers from issues such as being time-consuming and requiring expensive DFR film.
[0004] The purpose of the present invention is to provide a back plate for supporting a flexible display panel and a method for manufacturing the same, which solves the problem of the operation of a handwriting recognition pen, which is a problem of a conventional metal-based back plate.
[0005] Another object of the present invention is to provide a backplate for supporting a flexible display panel and a method for manufacturing the same, which can reduce manufacturing costs compared to conventional CFRP-based backplates.
[0006] In order to achieve the above object of the present invention, according to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a backplate for supporting a flexible display panel, comprising: a glass plate in which a gap is formed; two coating layers each covering both sides of the glass plate; and a filler that is filled in the gap and connected to the two coating layers, wherein the glass plate has two non-deformable structural parts positioned spaced apart from each other, and a deformable structural part positioned between the two non-deformable structural parts and connecting the two non-deformable structural parts, wherein the deformable structural part is formed over a deformable section in the longitudinal direction, and the deformable structural part is formed in a mesh shape by through holes that penetrate along a thickness direction of the deformable structural part and form the gap.
[0007] In order to achieve the above object of the present invention, according to another aspect of the present invention, a method for manufacturing a back plate for supporting a flexible display panel is provided, comprising: a pattern forming step of forming a pattern on a glass plate; a cutting step of cutting the glass plate according to the pattern to separate a plate cutting material from the glass plate; and a coating step of coating a coating solution on both sides of the plate cutting material, wherein in the pattern forming step, a mesh-shaped pattern is formed over a predetermined section in the longitudinal center of the plate cutting material, and in the cutting step, the plate cutting material is separated so that the mesh-shaped pattern remains in the longitudinal center of the plate cutting material, and in the coating step, the coating solution fills the gaps of the mesh-shaped pattern.
[0008] The present invention achieves all of the aforementioned objectives. Specifically, since the backplate of the present invention is made of glass, the problem of the handwriting recognition pen operating in conventional metal-based backplates is resolved.
[0009] In addition, the back plate according to the present invention is manufactured by processing glass that has an appropriate hardness and is suitable for sanding processing compared to CFRP, a carbon fiber resin composite material that has a very high degree of processing difficulty, so that the process time is shortened and the use of low-cost DFR film is possible, thereby reducing the manufacturing cost.
[0010] In addition, glass has superior flatness compared to materials such as metal and CFRP, and is the same material as window glass (UTG; Ultra Thin Glass) that protects flexible display panels, so it can minimize screen distortion when used as a backplate to support the panel. The coefficient of thermal expansion of glass is 8.7×10 -7 / K and the coefficient of thermal expansion of carbon fiber is -0.74×10 -5 / K, if CFRP is used as a back plate, screen distortion may occur due to warping of the display module caused by differences in thermal expansion coefficients. On the other hand, if the back plate is made of glass, the flexible display panel distortion caused by differences in thermal expansion coefficients is prevented because it is made of the same material as the cover window glass.
[0011] Meanwhile, in the present invention, a coating layer and filler based on carbon material having excellent thermal conductivity are formed, thereby ensuring heat dissipation and heat diffusion.

[0020] Hereinafter, the configuration and operation of an embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.
[0021] FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram illustrating a configuration of a flexible display device to which a back plate for supporting a flexible display panel according to an embodiment of the present invention is applied, and shows a cross-sectional structure. Referring to FIG. 1, a flexible display device (10) includes a flexible display panel (11), a flexible cover window glass (UTG) (12) attached to an upper surface of the display panel (11) to protect the display panel (11), and a back plate (100) for supporting a flexible display panel according to an embodiment of the present invention, which is attached to a rear surface of the display panel (11) to support the flexible display panel (11). A bending portion is formed in the flexible display device (10) over a predetermined section (E) in the longitudinal direction, so that the flexible display device (10) can be folded and unfolded (foldable). If the section (E) forming the bending portion becomes sufficiently long, the flexible display device (10) can be in a rollable form, which also falls within the scope of the present invention.
[0022] FIG. 2 is a perspective view illustrating a back plate (100) for supporting a flexible display panel according to an embodiment of the present invention illustrated in FIG. 1. Referring to FIG. 2, the back plate (100) for supporting a flexible display panel (hereinafter, abbreviated as “back plate”) is a generally rectangular plate, and includes a center layer (110), and a first coating layer (120) and a second coating layer (130) that entirely cover both sides of the center layer (110). The back plate (100) is arranged on the back surface of the flexible display panel in a flexible display device to entirely support the flexible display panel and maintain it in a flat state.
[0023] A back plate (100) is formed with a deformable portion (101) on a plane, and a first non-deformable portion (103) and a second non-deformable portion (107) located on both sides of the deformable portion (101), respectively. The deformable portion (101) is formed over a deformable section (B) in the longitudinal direction (X) of the back plate (100), and is located between the first non-deformable portion (103) and the second non-deformable portion (107), which are positioned spaced apart from each other. The deformable portion (101) is variable so that the back plate (100) can be folded and unfolded. The first non-deformable portion (103) is continuously connected to the deformable portion (101) in the longitudinal direction (X) and is formed over the first non-deformable section (C1). The first non-deformable portion (103) is not deformed and maintains a flat plate-like shape. The second non-deformed portion (107) is continuously connected to the deformed portion (101) in the longitudinal direction (X) and is formed across the second non-deformed section (C2). The second non-deformed portion (107) is not deformed and maintains a flat plate-like shape.
[0024] Fig. 3 illustrates a cross-sectional view of a back plate (100). Referring to Fig. 3, the central layer (110) includes a glass plate (111) and a filler (119) that fills a gap formed in the glass plate (111).
[0025] In Fig. 4, a glass plate (111) is illustrated as a plan view. Referring to Figs. 3 and 4, the glass plate (111) has a rectangular planar shape made of glass corresponding to the shape of the back plate (100), and includes a deformation structure (112) formed over a deformation section (B), a first non-deformable structure (114) formed over a first non-deformable section (C1), and a second non-deformable structure (117) formed over a second non-deformable section (C2). The deformation section (B) corresponds to the section (E) in which a bending section is formed in Fig. 1. In the present embodiment, the thickness of the glass plate (111) is described as being about 100 μm, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In addition, in this embodiment, the length (L) of the generally rectangular glass plate (111) is described as being about 159.2 mm, and the width (W) is described as being about 66 mm, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0026] The deformation structure (112) is formed over a deformation section (B) in the longitudinal direction (X). The deformation structure (112) is located at the center of the longitudinal direction (X) of the glass plate (111). In the present embodiment, the deformation section (B) where the deformation structure (112) is formed is described as being about 10% of the total length (L), but the present invention is not limited thereto. The deformation structure (112) forms a bending section so that the back plate (100) can be folded and unfolded. The deformation structure (112) is formed in a mesh structure. The deformation that can be folded and unfolded is possible due to the deformation structure (112) formed in a mesh structure, but the thickness does not change. Through holes (113) that penetrate the deformation structure (112) along the thickness direction are formed in the deformation structure (112) by the mesh structure. The deformation structure (112) is useful as a flexible display when the radius of curvature can be minimized as much as possible when bent. In this embodiment, the porosity of the deformation structure (112) due to the through holes (113) is preferably 20 to 50%. If the porosity is lower than 20%, it is difficult to secure the desired curvature, and if the porosity is higher than 50%, the possibility of damage to the deformation structure (112) increases. The through holes (113) are filled with a filler (119).
[0027] The first undeformed structural portion (114) is formed over the first undeformed section (C1) in the longitudinal direction (X). The first undeformed structural portion (114) is continuously connected to the deformed structural portion (112). The first undeformed structural portion (114) is generally a flat plate shape and maintains its shape without being deformed. A plurality of first undeformed structural portion holes (115) are formed in the first undeformed structural portion (114). In the present embodiment, the porosity of the first undeformed structural portion (114) by the plurality of first undeformed structural portion holes (115) is preferably 1.5 to 20%. If the porosity of the first undeformed structural portion (114) is lower than 1.5%, it is difficult to obtain the desired thermal performance, and if the porosity is higher than 20%, there is a possibility that the first undeformed structural portion (114) may be deformed. A plurality of first non-deformable structural holes (115) are filled with a filler (119).
[0028] The second non-deformed structure (117) is formed over the second non-deformed section (C2) in the longitudinal direction (X). The second non-deformed structure (117) is continuously connected to the deformed structure (112). The second non-deformed structure (117) is generally a flat plate and maintains its shape without being deformed. A plurality of second non-deformed structure holes (118) are formed in the second non-deformed structure (117). In the present embodiment, the porosity of the second non-deformed structure (117) by the plurality of second non-deformed structure holes (118) is preferably 1.5 to 20%. If the porosity of the second non-deformed structure (117) is lower than 1.5%, it is difficult to obtain the desired thermal performance, and if the porosity is higher than 20%, there is a possibility that the second non-deformed structure (117) will be deformed. A plurality of second non-deformable structural holes (118) are filled with a filler (119).
[0029] The filler (119) fills the through holes (113) formed in the deformation structure (112) of the glass plate (111), the plurality of first non-deformed structure holes (115) formed in the first non-deformed structure (114), and the plurality of second non-deformed structure holes (118) formed in the second non-deformed structure (117). The filler (119) is formed integrally with the first coating layer (120) and the second coating layer (130). The filler (119) is made of the same material as the first coating layer (120) and the second coating layer (130), and is formed together during the process in which the two coating layers (120, 130) are formed.
[0030] Referring to FIGS. 2 and 3, the first coating layer (120) covers the first surface (110a) (the upper surface in the drawings) among both surfaces of the central layer (110). The first coating layer (120) is made of a carbon-based resin material, thereby providing high elasticity / high thermal conductivity and excellent insulation properties. The first coating layer (120) is formed by coating a coating liquid on one surface of a glass plate (111). The first coating layer (120) is formed integrally with the filler (119) of the central layer (110) and is made of the same material as the filler (119). In the present embodiment, the thickness of the first coating layer (120) is described as being 5 to 20 μm.
[0031] The second coating layer (130) covers the second surface (110b) (the lower surface in the drawing) among both surfaces of the central layer (110). The second coating layer (130) is made of the same material as the first coating layer (120). The second coating layer (130) is formed by coating the other surface of the glass plate (111) with a coating liquid. The second coating layer (130) is formed integrally with the filler (119) of the central layer (110) and is made of the same material as the filler (119). In the present embodiment, the thickness of the second coating layer (130) is described as being 5 to 20 μm.
[0032] FIG. 5 illustrates a perspective view of a backplate according to another embodiment of the present invention. Referring to FIG. 5, the backplate (200) is a generally rectangular plate, and includes a center layer (210), a first coating layer (120), and a second coating layer (130) that entirely cover both sides of the center layer (210).
[0033] A back plate (200) is formed with a deformable portion (201) on a plane, and a first non-deformable portion (203) and a second non-deformable portion (207) located on both sides of the deformable portion (201), respectively. The deformable portion (201) is formed over a deformable section (B) in the longitudinal direction (X) of the back plate (100), and is located between the first non-deformable portion (203) and the second non-deformable portion (207), which are positioned spaced apart from each other. The deformable portion (201) is deformable so as to be able to wrap the back plate (200). The first non-deformable portion (203) is formed over a first non-deformable section (C1) that is continuously connected to the deformable portion (201) in the longitudinal direction (X). The first non-deformable portion (203) is not deformed and maintains a flat plate-like shape. The second non-deformed portion (207) is continuously connected to the deformed portion (201) in the longitudinal direction (X) and is formed across the second non-deformed section (C2). The second non-deformed portion (207) is not deformed and maintains a flat plate-like shape.
[0034] Although not shown, the central layer (210) has a glass plate (211) as shown in FIG. 6 and a filler (not shown) that fills a gap (213) formed in the glass plate (210).
[0035] Referring to FIG. 6, the glass plate (211) is a rectangular flat shape made of glass material corresponding to the shape of the back plate (200), and includes a deformation structure portion (212) formed over a deformation section (B), a first non-deformable structure portion (214) formed over a first non-deformable section (C1), and a second non-deformable structure portion (217) formed over a second non-deformable section (C2). In this embodiment, the thickness of the glass plate (211) is described as being about 100 μm, but the present invention is not limited thereto. In addition, in this embodiment, the length (L) of the generally rectangular glass plate (211) is described as being about 159.2 mm, and the width (W) is described as being about 66 mm, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0036] The deformation structure (212) is formed over the deformation section (B) in the longitudinal direction (X). The deformation structure (212) is located at the center of the longitudinal direction (X) of the glass plate (211). In the present embodiment, the deformation section (B) where the deformation structure (212) is formed is described as being about 80% or more of the total length (L) in consideration of use in a rollable form, but the present invention is not limited thereto. The deformation structure (212) forms a rolling section so that the back plate (200) can be rolled. The deformation structure (212) is formed in a mesh structure. The deformation structure (212) formed in a mesh structure enables deformation in which it can be rolled and unfolded in a roll shape. The deformation structure (212) in the form of a mesh structure has penetration holes (213) formed in the thickness direction. In this embodiment, the porosity of the deformation structure (212) formed by the through holes (213) is preferably 20 to 50%. If the porosity is lower than 20%, it is difficult to secure a curvature suitable for the roller, and if the porosity is higher than 50%, the possibility of damage to the deformation structure (212) increases. The through holes (213) are filled with a filler (not shown).
[0037] The first non-deformed structure (214) is formed over the first non-deformed section (C1) in the longitudinal direction (X). The first non-deformed structure (214) is continuously connected to the deformed structure (112). The first non-deformed structure (214) is generally a flat plate shape and maintains its shape without being deformed.
[0038] The second non-deformed structure (217) is formed across the second non-deformed section (C2) in the longitudinal direction (X). The second non-deformed structure (217) is continuously connected to the deformed structure (212). The second non-deformed structure (217) is generally flat and plate-shaped and maintains its shape without being deformed.
[0039] Referring to FIG. 5, the first coating layer (120) covers the first surface (the upper surface in the drawing) among both surfaces of the central layer (210). The first coating layer (120) is identical to the first coating layer (120) of the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2.
[0040] The second coating layer (130) covers the second side (the lower side in the drawing) of both sides of the central layer (210). The second coating layer (130) is identical to the second coating layer (130) of the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 2.
[0041] The first coating layer (120) and the second coating layer (130) are formed integrally with the filler (not shown) filled in the through holes (213) formed in the deformation structure (212) of the glass plate (211 in FIG. 6) of the central layer (210) and are made of the same material as the filler (not shown). The first coating layer (120) and the second coating layer (130) are connected by the filler (not shown) in the region of the deformation structure (212) of the glass plate (211), and are completely separated in a spaced state in the regions of the first non-deformed structure (214) and the second non-deformed structure (217).
[0042] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of a method for manufacturing a backplate according to one embodiment of the present invention. The method for manufacturing a backplate illustrated in FIG. 7 is for manufacturing a backplate (100, 200) having the structure described with reference to FIGS. 2 to 6. Referring to FIG. 7, a method for manufacturing a backplate according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a plate preparation step (S10) in which a glass plate necessary for manufacturing a backplate is prepared, a pattern forming step (S20) in which a pattern is formed on a glass plate prepared through the plate preparation step (S10), a cutting step (S30) in which a plurality of plate cutting materials are separated from the glass plate formed through the pattern forming step (S20), a slimming step (S40) in which the thickness of the plate cutting materials separated through the cutting step (S30) is reduced, a strengthening step (S50) in which the plate cutting materials whose thickness is reduced through the slimming step (S40) are strengthened, a healing step (S60) in which the plate cutting materials strengthened through the strengthening step (S50) are healed, a coating step (S70) in which a coating solution is coated on the plate cutting materials, and a drying step (S80) in which the coating solution is dried.
[0043] In the plate preparation step (S10), a glass plate required for manufacturing a glass plate (111 in FIG. 4) of a backplate (100 in FIG. 2) is prepared. The glass plate prepared in the plate preparation step (S10) has a sufficiently large flat surface size so that a plurality of glass plates (111 in FIG. 4) can be manufactured from the glass plate. After the glass plate is prepared through the plate preparation step (S10), a pattern formation step (S20) is performed.
[0044] In the pattern forming step (S20), a pattern is formed on the glass plate prepared through the plate preparation step (S10). FIG. 8 illustrates a state in which the pattern forming step (S20) is performed and a pattern is formed on the glass plate. Referring to FIG. 8, a pattern indicated by a broken line is formed on the glass plate (10). The pattern formed on the glass plate (10) includes a plurality of unit patterns (101). The unit patterns (101) have a size and shape corresponding to the glass plate (111 of FIG. 4). The unit patterns (101) include a cutting pattern (12) corresponding to the edge of the glass plate (111 of FIG. 4), a mesh pattern (13) corresponding to the mesh structure of the deformation structure (112) of the glass plate (111 of FIG. 4), and a hole pattern (14) corresponding to the holes (115, 118) of the glass plate (111 of FIG. 4). In this embodiment, the pattern forming step (S30) is described as being performed by attaching a photosensitive film (DFR: Dry Film Photoresist) to both sides of a glass plate (10), removing a protective film corresponding to the pattern from the photosensitive film, and performing an exposure and development process to form a pattern. After the pattern forming step (S20) is completed, a cutting step (S30) is performed.
[0045] In the cutting step (S30), the glass plate is cut according to the pattern formed through the pattern forming step (S20), so that a plurality of plate cutting materials are separated from the glass plate (10). Referring to FIG. 8, a state in which the cutting step (S30) is performed and the plate cutting material (111a) is separated from the glass plate (10) is illustrated. In the present embodiment, the cutting step (S40) is described as being performed using sand blasting, but the present invention is not limited thereto, and other cutting methods such as laser cutting may be used and are also within the scope of the present invention. After the cutting step (S30) is completed, a slimming step (S40) is performed on the plate cutting material (111a) obtained through the cutting step (S30). The photosensitive film attached to the plate cutting material (111a) is removed before the slimming step (S40) is performed.
[0046] In the slimming step (S40), the disc cutting material (111a in FIG. 8) separated through the cutting step (S30) is immersed in an etching solution so that the thickness of the disc cutting material (111a in FIG. 8) is reduced by the etching solution. After the thickness of the disc cutting material (111a in FIG. 8) is reduced through the slimming step (S40), the strengthening step (S50) is performed.
[0047] In the strengthening step (S50), the original cutting material, whose thickness was reduced through the slimming step (S40), is chemically strengthened. Since the strengthening step (S50) utilizes a conventional glass strengthening method, a detailed description thereof will be omitted. After the strengthening step (S50), the healing step (S60) is performed.
[0048] In the healing step (S60), healing is performed on the reinforced disc cutting material from the strengthening step (S50). In the healing step (S60), polishing is performed on the surface of the reinforced disc cutting material. Since the healing step (S60) utilizes a conventional method for polishing glass surfaces, a detailed description thereof will be omitted. After the healing step (S60), the coating step is performed.
[0049] In the coating step (S70), a coating solution is coated on the original coating material. The first and second coating layers (120, 130) of the back plate (100 in FIG. 2) and the filler (190 in FIG. 3) are formed by the coating solution coated in the coating step (S70). In the present embodiment, methods for coating the coating solution in the coating step (S70) include plasma coating, 3D printing, coating using a bar (roller) coater, coating using a spin coater, spray coating, and slot die coating. The coating solution used in the coating step (S80) contains 5 to 25 wt% carbon material, 0.5 to 3 wt% PVA (polyvinyl alcohol), 1 to 3 wt% graphene, 1 to 3 wt% carbon nanotubes (CNT), 25 to 35 wt% water, and 30 to 40 wt% alcohol. The carbon material, graphene, and carbon nanotubes enhance the heat diffusion function. The PVA acts as an adhesive, reinforcing agent, and stabilizer. The water and alcohol act as solvents. After the coating step (S70) is performed, the drying step (S80) is performed.
[0050] In the drying step (S80), the coating solution coated in the coating step (S70) is dried to form the first and second coating layers (120, 130) and the filler (190 in FIG. 3) of the back plate (100 in FIG. 2).
[0051] While the present invention has been described through the above examples, the present invention is not limited thereto. The above examples may be modified or altered without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention, and those skilled in the art will recognize that such modifications and variations also fall within the scope of the present invention.
