Abstract
Description
Slide fastener, its manufacturing method, and slide fastener sewn article
[0001] The present invention relates to a slide fastener used for opening and closing the opening and closing parts of clothing, bags, etc., and for attaching and detaching joined parts, a method for manufacturing the same, and a slide fastener sewn article.
[0002] Conventionally, slide fasteners are generally attached to opening and closing parts of clothing, bags, etc., or to joining parts of joined articles, and are composed of a pair of tapes attached opposite to the opening and closing parts, fastener elements arranged in a row at equal intervals on the opposing edges of the pair of tapes, a slider that slides along the row of opposing fastener elements to engage or separate the opposing fastener elements, and a bottom stop and top stop that are provided on the end edges of the row of fastener elements to stop the slider from sliding.
[0003] Fastener elements are made of either resin or metal, with metal elements having high bonding strength and a luxurious appearance. Copper alloys or aluminum alloys are commonly used. Stainless steel is harder than copper or aluminum and therefore more scratch-resistant, but when used in slide fasteners, it is too hard, shortening the lifespan of the molds and other components required to process it into the element shape. Furthermore, when attaching elements to fastener tape, a metal with a certain degree of flexibility is desirable. Therefore, stainless steel has some disadvantages as a slide fastener material.
[0004] For the above reasons, although there have been examples up to now of stainless steel slide fasteners being used after special carburizing treatment for special applications such as underwater use, as in Patent Document 1, they have not yet become widespread on the market as general-purpose products. However, in recent years, with an increasing preference for high-end appearances and the preference for the texture, such as the glossiness, unique to stainless steel, there has been a growing market need for stainless steel slide fasteners, particularly in general-purpose fields such as bags. The inventors of the present application were developing a stainless steel slide fastener to meet such market needs, when they discovered the following new, previously unforeseen problem, and solved the problem with a novel, unconventional idea.
[0005] Patent Application No. 2013-120852
[0006] Stainless steel is generally recognized as being resistant to rust. However, the inventors of the present application have discovered that when stainless steel is used as an element of a slide fastener and subjected to a saltwater test, rust occurs at the portion of the element that contacts the fastener tape (the portion of the element that is attached to the fastener tape by crimping) and the rust penetrates and spreads into the fastener tape, resulting in a new problem: staining becomes noticeable. Furthermore, when the same saltwater test is performed on a slide fastener equipped with a conventional copper alloy element, the entire surface of the element tends to corrode. In other words, the concentrated rust at the portion of the element that contacts the fastener tape is not observed with copper alloys and is a problem specific to stainless steel slide fasteners.
[0007] Detailed analysis of the cause of this issue using enlarged photographs and other methods revealed the formation of tiny holes measuring 20 to 30 μm where the element contacted the fastener tape. These holes (pitting corrosion) are believed to have occurred when chloride ions in saltwater destroy the passive film (protective film) necessary for stainless steel's rust prevention, exposing the internal iron. Contact with saltwater accelerates corrosion of the susceptible iron, resulting in holes (pitting corrosion). While the gloss remained intact in areas other than the pitted areas, rust developed in the pitted areas, leaving noticeable red stains of iron rust on the tape. This is likely due to the unique structure of slide fasteners, in which the inner surfaces of the pair of legs that sandwich and hold the fastener tape remain in contact with saltwater that has soaked into the fastener tape for extended periods, making them prone to pitting corrosion. Therefore, measures to prevent pitting corrosion specific to stainless steel fastener elements are needed. However, methods such as the carburizing process described in Patent Document 1 involve numerous, complex processing steps and require large-scale equipment, making them uneconomical for widespread market adoption as a general-purpose product.
[0008] The present invention has been made in view of the above background and problems, and aims to provide a slide fastener, a manufacturing method thereof, and a slide fastener sewn product that can reliably suppress the occurrence of rust in metal fastener elements, particularly stainless steel fastener elements, by a simple method and maintain a good appearance.
[0009] The present invention provides a slide fastener comprising a pair of left and right fastener tapes, a pair of element rows consisting of a plurality of fastener elements arranged facing each other on edge portions of the fastener tapes along the length direction of the fastener tapes, and a slider slidably attached to mesh with the pair of element rows, wherein the fastener elements are made of metal, and the fastener tapes are provided with a water-repellent layer made of a water-repellent agent, and the water-repellent layer prevents moisture from adhering to the fastener tapes.Furthermore, it is preferable that the water-repellent agent is attached to the fastener tapes even in the portions in contact with the fastener elements.
[0010] The fastener element may be provided with a coating layer made of a coating agent. The coating layer of the fastener element is preferably provided also on a portion of the fastener element that comes into contact with the fastener tape. The fastener element is preferably made of stainless steel.
[0011] The present invention is a method for manufacturing a slide fastener, which comprises forming individual fastener elements from metal, attaching the fastener elements to one edge along the longitudinal direction of a long fastener tape to form a fastener stringer, applying a water repellent agent to the fastener elements and the fastener tape to form a water repellent layer, and attaching the sliders to a pair of the fastener stringers.
[0012] The fastener element is formed by forming a coating layer on a stainless steel element substrate. At least one of the coating layer made of the coating agent and the water-repellent layer made of the water-repellent agent is formed by spraying or immersion.
[0013] The present invention is a slide fastener sewn article to which the slide fastener is sewn, and the main body part of the sewn article to which the slide fastener is attached is made of cloth, leather, or synthetic leather that has not been treated with a water repellent agent.
[0014] The slide fastener and its manufacturing method of the present invention can reliably suppress rust on metal fastener elements, particularly stainless steel fastener elements, and maintain a good appearance in a simple manner. Up until now, applying a water repellent agent to a fastener tape has been a common practice for preventing water from penetrating into the interior of a slide fastener, particularly in slide fasteners with resin elements. However, the present invention uses a water repellent agent to prevent rust from forming where the metal element contacts the fastener tape, which is a fundamentally different concept from conventional slide fasteners that use a water repellent agent for the purpose of preventing water penetration. Furthermore, while conventional slide fasteners that have been applied with a water repellent agent to prevent water penetration are implicitly assumed to be attached to garments and other products intended for use in environments where they are wet by rainwater, the present invention is not necessarily intended for use in environments where they are wet by rainwater, which is also a fundamentally different concept from conventional slide fasteners that have been applied with a water repellent agent to prevent water penetration. In this way, the present invention provides a water-repellent layer made of a water-repellent agent on the fastener tape, thereby reducing the amount of moisture that adheres to the inner thigh portion of the metal element through the fastener tape, thereby achieving a high level of rust prevention for the fastener element.
[0015] As a result, sewn articles equipped with the slide fastener of the present invention are less likely to rust on the metal fastener elements, and stains on the fastener tape due to rust are suppressed, allowing a clean appearance to be maintained for a long period of time. In other words, even if saltwater from the sea is accidentally splashed on the slide fastener part of the sewn article at the beach, rust from the inner thigh part of the metal element is suppressed, and the good appearance of the sewn article, such as a bag, equipped with the slide fastener, can be maintained. For this reason, it is assumed that the fabric to which the slide fastener of the present invention is attached does not require treatment with a water repellent.

FIG. 6 is an image of the results of a salt spray test conducted to examine the corrosion resistance of a conventional slide fastener.
[0017] Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. Fig. 1 shows a slide fastener 10 according to one embodiment of the present invention. The slide fastener 10 according to this embodiment comprises a pair of left and right fastener tapes 12 and a pair of element rows 16 each consisting of a plurality of fastener elements 14 arranged along the longitudinal direction of each fastener tape 12, facing each other at edge portions 12a on opposing sides of the fastener tapes 12. A core cord portion bulging in the front-to-back direction is provided at the edge portion 12a of the fastener tape 12, and the element rows 16 are fixed to the core cord portion of the edge portion 12a.
[0018] A slider 20 that meshes with the fastener elements 14 when it passes through is slidably attached to the pair of element rows 16. In addition, a bottom stop 22 that limits the range of movement of the slider 20 is provided at the bottom end of the pair of element rows 16, and top stops 24 that limit the range of movement of the slider 20 are also provided at the top end of the pair of element rows 16, respectively.
[0019] The fastener element 14 of this embodiment is formed from stainless steel containing a certain amount of chromium or more in iron. Types of stainless steel include, for example, ferritic stainless steel containing 16.0 to 18.0% chromium, or austenitic stainless steel containing 8.0 to 10.50% nickel and 18.0 to 20.0% chromium, or stainless steel with other components may also be used.
[0020] Next, the shape of the fastener element 14 will be described with reference to Figures 2 and 3. The fastener element 14 has a pair of legs 26 that sandwich and hold the edge 12a of the fastener tape 12 from the thickness direction of the fastener tape 12, and a connecting portion 28 that connects the pair of legs 26. The connecting portion 28 has a pair of side surfaces that are parallel to the opposing directions of the pair of legs 26 and intersect with the longitudinal direction of the fastener tape 12, one of the side surfaces is provided with a protrusion 30 that protrudes from the side surface, and the side surface opposite to the protrusion 30 is provided with a recess 32 that is sized to fit the protrusion 30.
[0021] 1, the left and right fastener elements 14 are interlocked in such a manner that, as the slider 20 moves upward in the drawing, which is the closing direction, the convex portion 30 of the fastener element 14 on the left side of the pair of fastener stringers 18 in the drawing fits into the concave portion 32 of the fastener element 14 on the right side, and the convex portion 30 of the fastener element 14 on the right side fits into the concave portion 32 of the fastener element 14 on the left side, and this continues. Also, as the slider 20 moves downward in the drawing, the left and right fastener elements 14 are disengaged, and the connection of the pair of fastener stringers 18 is released.
[0022] The surface of the fastener element 14 is coated to provide a coating layer 34. The coating material used in the coating process is, for example, a polyvinyl-based or silicone-based polymer. Furthermore, the slide fastener 10 is washed with water after the fastener element 14 is attached to the fastener tape 12, and then is subjected to a water-repellent process, and a water-repellent layer 36 is provided on the fiber surface of the fastener tape 12. The water-repellent material used in the water-repellent process is a fluorine-based or acrylic urethane-based polymer.
[0023] The coating layer 34 and the water-repellent layer 36 provide a rust-preventing effect for the fastener element 14. In particular, the water-repellent layer 36 prevents water from seeping into the fastener tape 12, which prevents the inner circumferential surfaces of the pair of legs 26 of the fastener element 14 that sandwich and hold the fastener tape 12 from coming into contact with water that has seeped into the fastener tape 12, thereby suppressing the occurrence of rust on the inner circumferential surfaces of the pair of legs 26, which are prone to corrosion. In other words, by providing the fastener stringer 18 with the water-repellent layer 36 made of a water-repellent agent, a rust-preventing effect for the slide fastener 10 can be obtained.
[0024] Next, a manufacturing method of the slide fastener 10 will be described with reference to Figure 4. First, a stainless steel element base material is manufactured. The manufacturing method is a conventionally known method, for example, by punching a stainless steel rectangular wire material into a predetermined element shape using a cutting punch and a cutting die to manufacture the element base material. Alternatively, the element is processed into a long wire material called a Y-bar whose cross section has the element shape, and the Y-bar is cut to the desired thickness to manufacture the element base material. Note that the manufacturing method of the element base material in this embodiment is not limited to this, and any appropriate method for manufacturing the element base material can be selected.
[0025] Next, the element substrate is polished. The polishing method is the same as conventional methods, for example, by placing the element substrate in a liquid processing vessel and performing a polishing process such as barrel polishing or chemical polishing. By polishing, burrs are removed from the element substrate, resulting in a smooth surface.
[0026] Next, the element substrate that has been subjected to the polishing process is subjected to a coating process. The coating process method is also the same as conventional methods, and for example, the element substrate is placed in a bucket, and a coating agent is sprayed onto the element substrate while the bucket is rotating, thereby coating the element substrate and forming a coating layer 34 on the surface, resulting in a fastener element 14 with a rust-preventing effect. In particular, it is important that the coating agent is sprayed onto the bucket while rotating in this manner, so that the coating layer 34 is applied even to the inner circumferential surfaces of the pair of legs 26 that sandwich and hold the fastener tape 12.
[0027] Thereafter, the fastener elements 14 are planted in the fastener tape 12. The planting method is the same as conventional, and for example, the fastener elements 14 are fed into a parts feeder, the fastener elements 14 are adjusted in position, and then the fastener elements 14 are supplied via a chute to the edge portion 12a of the fastener tape 12 so that the core cord portion of the edge portion 12a is sandwiched between a pair of legs 26 of the fastener elements 14. Thereafter, the fastener elements 14 supplied to the edge portion 12a of the fastener tape 12 are planted in the edge portion 12a of the fastener tape 12 by being crimped using a crimping means.
[0028] Next, the fastener tape 12 to which the fastener elements 14 are attached as described above is washed with water. For example, the fastener tape 12 to which the fastener elements 14 are attached is placed in a water tank filled with washing water, and is immersed in the washing water and stirred. The washing water may contain a rust inhibitor. Then, the adhering washing water may be removed with a suction device.
[0029] After washing with water, a water-repellent treatment is performed. For example, the water-repellent treatment method involves placing the washed fastener tape 12 with the fastener elements 14 attached in a water tank filled with a water-repellent agent, immersing the fastener tape 12 in the water-repellent agent, and stirring the water-repellent agent. The adhering water-repellent agent may then be removed using a suction device. This forms a water-repellent layer 36 made of the water-repellent agent on the fiber surface of the fastener tape 12 and the surface of the fastener elements 14, resulting in a fastener stringer 18 with water-repellent properties.
[0030] In a more preferred embodiment, the fastener tape 12 is immersed in the water repellent until the water repellent is sufficiently absorbed into the portion of the fastener tape 12 in contact with the fastener elements 14. In other words, the portion of the fastener tape 12 in contact with the fastener elements 14 is the portion of the fastener tape 12 that is sandwiched between the pair of legs 26 of the fastener elements 14. This makes it possible to more effectively prevent the elements from coming into direct contact with salt water or the like.
[0031] The fastener stringer 18 has a water-repellent function due to the water-repellent layer 36. In particular, the water-repellent agent attached to the fastener tape 12 is less likely to come off than the water-repellent agent attached to the surface of the fastener elements 14. Therefore, even with long-term use, water does not penetrate into the fastener tape 12, and the inner surfaces of the pair of legs 26 of the fastener element 14 that sandwich and hold the fastener tape 12 do not come into contact with water that has penetrated into the fastener tape 12. Therefore, rust is suppressed on the inner surfaces of the pair of legs 26, which are prone to corrosion. In particular, the fastener stringer 18 has a rust-preventive effect on the fastener elements 14 due to the coating layer 34, and furthermore, the water-repellent layer 36 prevents water from penetrating into the fastener tape 12, resulting in a high rust-preventive effect on the fastener elements 14. The water-repellent layer 36 may be provided only on the fastener tape 12.
[0032] Then, the slider 20, the bottom stop 22, and the top stop 24 are attached to the fastener stringer 18, completing the manufacture of the slide fastener 10. The assembly method is the same as that of a conventional, general slide fastener.
[0033] Although water repellent agents have been applied to slide fasteners in the past, they were only applied to garments and other products intended for use in environments subject to rain, etc. In other words, the main body of the sewn article to which the slide fastener is attached is made of fabric that has been treated with a water repellent agent.
[0034] In contrast, the slide fastener 10 of the embodiment of the present invention is significantly different from conventional water-repellent slide fasteners in that it can also be used when the slide fastener 10 is sewn to fabric that has not been treated with a water-repellent agent. In other words, the slide fastener 10 of the embodiment of the present invention is significantly different from conventional water-repellent slide fasteners in that the main body of the sewn article to which the slide fastener 10 is attached is fabric (not limited to woven fabrics, but including knitted fabrics, felt, nonwoven fabrics, etc.) that has not been treated with a water-repellent agent, leather, or synthetic leather. Even bags and clothing that are not intended for use in environments where they will get wet, such as with rainwater, or in other words, ordinary bags and clothing that are not specifically waterproofed, can accidentally get wet with seawater. The purpose and effect of the present invention is to prevent rust from forming on the metal elements in such cases.
[0035] According to the slide fastener 10 of this embodiment, rusting of the stainless steel fastener elements 14 can be reliably suppressed and a good appearance can be maintained in a simple manner. A coating layer 34 made of a coating agent is provided on the surface of the fastener elements 14 before attachment to the fastener tape 12, providing a high rust prevention effect. Furthermore, by providing a water-repellent layer 36 made of a water-repellent agent on the fastener stringer 18, water does not penetrate the fastener tape 12, thereby achieving a higher rust prevention effect for the fastener elements 14. In particular, the water-repellent layer 36 prevents water from penetrating the fastener tape 12, so the inner surfaces of the pair of legs 26 of the fastener element 14 that sandwich and hold the fastener tape 12 do not come into contact with water that has penetrated the fastener tape 12. This prevents rusting of the inner surfaces of the legs 26, which are prone to corrosion. This allows the stainless steel slide fastener 10 to be used in products that come into contact with seawater or are exposed to sea breezes. For example, clothing and bags using the beautiful stainless steel fastener elements 14 can be used outdoors, even at beach resorts or on cruises.
[0036] A slide fastener sewn article provided with the slide fastener 10 according to this embodiment is resistant to rust on the stainless steel fastener elements 14, prevents rust from staining the fastener tape 12, and maintains a clean appearance for a long period of time. Furthermore, even when used at the beach, rust is prevented from occurring, and the good appearance of clothing, bags, and other items can be maintained.
[0037] The method for producing the fastener element of the present invention, the processing method, the method for attaching to the fastener tape, etc. can be changed as appropriate, and the material of the fastener element may be other than the above, such as other stainless steel or stainless steel. Also, the material of the coating agent and the water repellent agent may be other than the above.
[0038] Furthermore, since the present invention is based on new problems that were discovered through a detailed analysis of the results of saltwater tests on stainless steel elements, it goes without saying that the invention is applicable to slide fasteners with stainless steel elements, but it is obvious that the same effect will be achieved when applied to elements made of metals other than stainless steel. In other words, in the case of stainless steel, the effect can be confirmed visually in a short period of time, but with metals other than stainless steel, it is clear that a certain effect will be achieved, even if it is not so visually confirmed. Therefore, it can be said that the present invention is a technical concept that can be applied to slide fasteners with metal elements other than stainless steel.
[0039] The slide fastener 10 of this invention was evaluated for corrosion resistance to salt water. The evaluation method was to use a salt spray tester to spray a neutral sodium chloride aqueous solution onto the fastener stringer 18 in a constant atmosphere for a specified time, and then observe any changes in appearance. The salt spray tester used was an STP-90V-4 manufactured by Suga Test Instruments Co., Ltd. An electronic balance with a minimum scale of 1 g or less and a maximum weighing capacity of 1000 g or more was used, and a pH measuring instrument was also used.
[0040] The test conditions were: test chamber temperature 35±2°C, air saturator temperature 47±2°C, supply air pressure 0.098±0.010 MPa (1±0.1 kg / cm2 ) The sodium chloride solution has a concentration of 5% (50±5 g / l), a specific gravity of 1.029 to 1.036 (at 25°C), and a pH of 5.0 to 8.0 (when adjusted). The water used for the sodium chloride solution is deionized water or distilled water (preferably 1 μS / cm or less) with a temperature of 25±2°C and an electrical conductivity of 20 μS / cm or less. The salt used is of special grade or higher as specified in JIS-K-8150. The spray liquid collection rate is 1.5±0.5 ml / hr / 80 cm 2 The test time is 96 hours.
[0041] Next, the test procedure will be described. First, test samples are prepared. The test samples are the fastener stringer 18 used in the slide fastener 10 of the present application and a conventional fastener stringer for comparison. The fastener stringer 18 has fastener elements 14 that have been subjected to a coating treatment, and further has been subjected to a water-repellent treatment while the fastener elements 14 are attached to the fastener tape 12. The conventional fastener stringer does not undergo these two types of treatment.
[0042] Then, prepare a 5% sodium chloride solution and check that the pH is between 5.0 and 8.0. Stir the sodium chloride solution well to prevent clogging of nozzles, etc. Next, prepare the test machine according to the salt spray test machine's operating instructions and check the test conditions. Then, set the test sample in the test machine's test tank. Set the fastener stringer of the test sample in a hanging position. The setting position and spacing should be such that the free fall of the spray is not hindered and that droplets from one sample do not drip onto other samples.
[0043] Next, start the salt spray tester. After the specified time of operation, carefully remove the test sample and wash it with tap water. Also, use a soft brush to wash and remove any deposits (salt, etc.) other than the corrosion products on the surface until they are no longer visible to the naked eye. Place the washed test sample on a flat surface and let it dry naturally. Then, visually check the appearance of the corrosion products and evaluate the corrosion resistance.
[0044] FIG. 5 shows an enlarged image of the appearance of corrosion products on a fastener stringer 18 according to the present invention. According to this image, no stains due to corrosion or corrosion have occurred, and the fastener tape 12 is in a clean condition. On the other hand, FIG. 6 shows an enlarged image of the appearance of corrosion products on a comparative fastener stringer. According to this image, a red stain S due to iron rust can be seen in the portion of the fastener tape 12 between a pair of fastener elements 14. This is thought to be because, without a water-repellent treatment, saltwater seeped into the fastener tape 12, and the inner surfaces of the pair of legs 26 of the fastener element 14 that sandwich and hold the fastener tape 12 came into contact with the saltwater that had seeped into the fastener tape 12, causing corrosion from this portion. The rust spread to the fastener tape 12 along with the saltwater, resulting in the stain S. This shows that the slide fastener 10 according to the present invention achieves a high rust prevention effect due to the water-repellent treatment.
