Position Measurement Device

Abstract

The invention relates to a position measuring device for detecting the relative position of two objects, wherein the objects are able to move relative to each other in the principal direction of translational motion and in other degrees of freedom. The scale holder extends in the principal direction of motion having first, second and third surfaces, each surface defining the plane, and in which at least one scale is arranged on each surface. The scanning assembly is able to move relative to the scale holder comprising multiple scanning units configured to produce a position signal dependent on the displacement from the scanning of the scales, in which each surface is assigned at least one scanning unit. The plane defined by the second surface divides the surrounding space into two half-spaces, in which the first surface, which has at least one scale, is arranged in one of the two half-spaces, and the third surface, which has at least one scale, is arranged in the other half-space.
