Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the fabrication of modified biochar derived from Spirulina biomass, which includes the following steps: a) raw material processing; b) raw material mixing; c) fabrication of modified biochar by nitrogen doping. The process described in the invention is capable of producing biochar with a yield of 500 g biochar / 1000 g biomass powder. Biochar samples have been successfully used to adsorb Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) present in wastewater. Adsorption capacities reached 57.9 ± 0.3 mg / g, 43.6 ± 0.7 mg / g, and 63.9 ± 0.6 mg / g for Cu(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II), respectively. The use of 98% K2CO3 as an activator for the nitrogen doping process can significantly enhance the adsorption capacity of the biochar.
