CORNEAL RECONSTRUCTION FRAMEWORK AND METHODS FOR MANUFACTURING IT

Abstract

The invention relates to a scaffold for corneal reconstruction and a method for producing such a scaffold. The scaffold comprises at least one layer of aligned fibers. The aligned fibers consist of biocompatible polycaprolactone (PCL) and collagen. The PCL and collagen have a mass ratio ranging from 77:23 to 42:58. Each layer of aligned fibers has a thickness of 15 to 20 μm. The scaffold exhibits various properties including, but not limited to, visible light transmittance ranging from 50 to 95%; tensile strength less than or equal to 19.1 MPa; and elastic modulus ranging from 1 MPa to 34 MPa.
