Abstract

The invention relates to dammarane-based saponin compounds (1-7) and phenolic compounds (8-10) and / or biologically active compounds from the above-ground parts of Gynostemma longipes, a method for isolation and a procedure for extracting dry extracts of Gynostemma longipes containing these compounds. The extraction procedure according to the invention uses 96% ethanol as the solvent combined with ultrasonic extraction to obtain an extract containing both dammarane-based saponin and phenolic compounds. Compounds with formulas 1 to 8 are novel compounds, first found in nature. Compounds with formulas (4), (5), (8) to (10) show neuroprotective effects on HT-22 cell models induced by glutamate toxicity. The dried extract of long-stemmed Gynostemma pentaphyllum obtained from the process according to the invention has the effect of protecting nerve cells and improving memory impairment in experimental models, providing a scientific basis and experimental data for the development of products to support the prevention and treatment of dementia from Gynostemma longipes.
