AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing alkene oligomerization technologies face challenges with product separation and catalyst recyclability, particularly when using homogeneous liquid-phase catalysts, and there is a need for efficient oligomerization of heavy olefins.

Method used

The use of catalysts supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), specifically transition metal complexes like iron, nickel, and chromium, which are anchored via methods such as covalent bonding, electrostatic bonding, and TT-TT stacking, to catalyze the oligomerization of alkenes with 3 or more carbon atoms.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables efficient alkene oligomerization, achieving high reactivity and selectivity, such as 94% 1-hexene consumption and 65% selectivity towards C12 dimers, while also facilitating catalyst recyclability and easy removal from reaction media.

Abstract

Systems and methods for multifunctional catalyst systems supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for olefin oligomerization are described. The catalyst systems can directly convert CO2 to jet-range (C12-C18) hydrocarbons. This conversion can be achieved by a cooperative, tandem catalyst system supported on CNTs converting CO2 to olefins (C2-C9) with the catalyst systems followed by oligomerization.
