AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing wireless communication systems face challenges in determining the correct ports for uplink transmission, particularly in scenarios involving antenna switching (AS) and codebook or non-codebook based transmissions, which affects spectral efficiency and latency.

Method used

The system determines antenna ports for uplink transmission by receiving a configuration of resources from a network node, specifically for antenna switching (AS), and uses this information to transmit data using the appropriate ports. The network node configures SRS resources with specific ports for both AS and codebook/non-codebook (CB/NCB) usage, and indicates the relation between these ports to the wireless device.

Benefits of technology

This approach enhances the determination of antenna ports for uplink transmission, improving spectral efficiency and reducing latency by aligning PUCCH ports with the latest PUSCH transmission ports and ensuring proper gap periods for antenna switching.

[0015] Section headings are used in the present document only for ease of understanding and do not limit scope of the embodiments to the section in which they are described. Furthermore, while embodiments are described with reference to 5G examples, the disclosed techniques may be applied to wireless systems that use protocols other than 5G or 3GPP protocols.

[0016] FIG. 1 shows an example of a wireless communication system (e.g., a long term evolution (LTE) , 5G or NR cellular network) that includes a BS 120 and one or more user equipment (UE) 111, 112 and 113. In some embodiments, the uplink transmissions (131, 132, 133) can include uplink control information (UCI) , higher layer signaling (e.g., UE assistance information or UE capability) , or uplink information. In some embodiments, the downlink transmissions (141, 142, 143) can include downlink control information (DCI) or high layer signaling or downlink information. The UE may be, for example, a smartphone, a tablet, a mobile computer, a machine to machine (M2M) device, a terminal, a mobile device, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, and so on.

[0017] FIG. 2 is a block diagram representation of a portion of an apparatus based on some embodiments of the disclosed technology. An apparatus 205 such as a network device or a base station or a wireless device (or UE) , can include processor electronics 210 such as a microprocessor that implements one or more of the techniques presented in this document. The apparatus 205 can include transceiver electronics 215 to send and / or receive wireless signals over one or more communication interfaces such as antenna (s) 220. The apparatus 205 can include other communication interfaces for transmitting and receiving data.  Apparatus 205 can include one or more memories (not explicitly shown) configured to store information such as data and / or instructions. In some implementations, the processor electronics 210 can include at least a portion of the transceiver electronics 215. In some embodiments, at least some of the disclosed techniques, modules or functions are implemented using the apparatus 205.

[0018] Flexible MIMO schemes are becoming a key part in the fifth generation (5G) new radio (NR) technology. Flexible MIMO schemes include, among others, antenna switching sounding reference signal (SRS) , codebook or non-codebook based physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmission. The disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to determine ports for SRS, PUSCH and physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) .

[0019] A network node can configure one or more sounding reference signal (SRS) resource sets for a wireless device (e.g., UE) . Each of the one or more SRS resource sets includes one or more SRS resources and can be configured with a usage of beam management (BM) , antenna switching (AS) , codebook (CB)  / non-codebook (NCB) . In addition, each SRS resource can be configured with a number of ports.

[0020] For a downlink (DL) transmission, a precoder can be determined based on UE’s estimation via a downlink reference signal (DL RS) and can be reported to the network node. Alternatively, a precoder can be determined based on the network’s estimation via an uplink reference signal (UL RS) , e.g., SRS, then the UL channel state can be used to determine the precoder of DL transmission considering the channel reciprocity between DL and UL. Such SRS for DL estimation is assumed to be SRS with usage of AS.

[0021] FIG. 3 shows an example where the network estimates 2 antenna switching (AS) sounding reference signal (SRS) resources, each of which is configured with 2 ports.

[0022] A UE can be equipped with xTyR antennas (or antenna ports) , where “T” indicates transmission ports, “R” indicates reception ports, and x and y are integers, and x is less than or equal to y. In one implementation, a UE equipped with xTyR has x transmission ports and y reception ports. For example, as shown in FIG. 3, a UE with 2T4R has 2 transmission ports and 4 reception ports. In this way, the number of transmission chains except the antenna itself can be reduced from 4 to 2, but the antenna can be reused partly. As such, the UE can perform transmission operations by using up to 2 ports at a time, and can perform reception operations by using up to 4 ports at a time. Accordingly, SRS for AS for this case can be configured with at least 2 time units, e.g., 2 symbols (e.g., OFDM symbol) , as shown in FIG. 3. There are 2 SRS resources, e.g., SRS ID 0 and SRS ID 1, and each SRS  resource is configured with 2 ports. Ports should be different for different SRS resources for antenna switching. In addition, a gap between the 2 SRS resources (e.g., 1 symbol as gap symbol) should be considered when performing antenna switching.

[0023] If a UE has more Rx antennas than Tx antennas (e.g., xTyR antennas or antenna ports, where x, and y are integers, and x is less than or equal to y) , the UE actually has y antennas, which can be used as a set of y reception (Rx) antennas, or different sets of x transmission (Tx) antennas.

[0024] A UE can also be configured with SRS for UL transmission, e.g., PUSCH transmission. There are 2 kinds of PUSCH transmission: codebook-based PUSCH transmission, and non-codebook-based PUSCH transmission.

[0025] For a codebook-based PUSCH transmission, SRS for a usage of codebook is configured and transmitted by the UE to the network, then the network estimates the SRS and determines a precoder based on the estimation and indicates the precoder to the UE via a transmit precoding matrix index (TPMI) , which indicates a precoder from a set of predefined precoders, e.g., codebook. If there are more than one SRS resources in an SRS resource set, SRI is also indicated to the UE to determine one SRS resource from the more than one SRS resources. In addition, the determined SRS resource and the indicated TPMI are used to determine a precoder of the PUSCH transmission.

[0026] For a non-codebook-based PUSCH transmission, SRS for a usage of the non-codebook-based transmission is configured and transmitted by the UE to the network, then the network estimates the SRS and determines a precoder based on the estimation and indicates the precoder to the UE via SRI (SRS resource indicator) . One or more SRS resources can be indicated by SRI, and a precoder is determined to be the same precoder as the SRS resources indicated by SRI.

[0027] In some implementations, SRS for CB / NCB and SRS for AS can be configured at the same time. In other implementations, an SRS transmission can be reused for CB / NCB and for AS. For example, an SRS resource is configured for CB / NCB with 2 ports, and 2 SRS resources are configured for AS, and each AS SRS resource is configured with 2 ports. From the antenna switching perspective, 2 AS SRS resources correspond to different ports, e.g., the first AS SRS resource corresponds to Rx antenna 0 and 1, and the second AS SRS resource corresponds to Rx antenna 2 and 3. Regarding the 2 ports corresponding to CB / NCB SRS resource, which Rx antennas should be selected / considered / determined or which AS SRS resources should be selected / considered / determined may be vary depending on UE  implementation. UE can only transmit SRS for AS, and the network can estimate the SRS for both AS and CB / NCB.

[0028] Embodiment 1: the relation between ports of SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports of SRS resources for AS.

[0029] Issue: The network cannot obtain the relation between ports for SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports for SRS resources for AS if the relation is only determined by UE.

[0030] In an embodiment of the disclosed technology, the network can indicate, to the UE, the relation between ports for SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports for SRS resources for AS, e.g., based on the estimation of ports, by the network, for all UE (Rx) antennas for both AS and CB / NCB.

[0031] In an example, as shown in FIG. 3, the network estimates 2 AS SRS resources, where each resource is configured with 2 ports. The network can estimate the two SRS resources for both AS and CB / NCB and indicates which SRS resource can be used for determining ports for CB / NCB SRS resource. In addition, ports for PUSCH transmission can be determined via CB / NCB SRS resource.

[0032] Regarding the relation of AS SRS resource and CB / NCB SRS resource, one or more AS SRS resources can be configured to overlap with SRS for CB / NCB in frequency domain (FD) and time domain (TD) , or as same SRS resource ID. Such AS SRS resource and CB / NCB SRS resource can be reused, and one SRS resource can be transmitted only once for the two usages / purposes.

[0033] In another example, for a UE with 1T4R, there are 4 SRS resources for AS, and which AS SRS resource of 4 AS SRS resources is used to determine the port of CB / NCB SRS resource and / or which port is used for PUSCH can be determined based on UE implementation. From the network perspective, one of AS SRS resources can be configured to overlap with one of CB / NCB SRS resources in FD and TD or to have the same SRS resource ID. The AS SRS resource and CB / NCB SRS resource, which overlap in FD and TD or share the same SRS resource ID, may have the same number of ports and / or may have the same ports. In some implementations, The AS SRS resource and CB / NCB SRS resource correspond to the same (or the same set of) Rx antennas.

[0034] In addition, the network can indicate the relation between ports of SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports of SRS resources for AS to the UE via a radio resource control (RRC) signaling or a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) .

[0035] In an implementation, an AS SRS resource can be indicated to a CB / NCB SRS resource via RRC signaling or MAC CE. The AS SRS resource can be indicated using an  SRS resource set ID or an SRS resource set index within the AS SRS resource sets, and an SRS resource index within the indicated SRS resource set.

[0036] In addition, the UE can determine the relation between ports of SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports of SRS resources for AS, and can report the relation between ports for SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports for SRS resources for AS to the network.

[0037] Embodiment 2: the port of CB / NCB SRS resources

[0038] Issue: It is not clear whether CB / NCB SRS resources have same set of ports or not.

[0039] As discussed above, if the number of Tx (x) is less than the number of Rx (y) , which port and / or which antenna is used for CB / NCB SRS resource is determined based on UE implementation. If there are more than one CB / NCB SRS resource, whether the CB / NCB SRS resources have the same or different ports is not clear.

[0040] If whether the ports of different CB / NCB SRS resources are the same or different is not known, it is not clear how long the gap period between the different CB / NCB SRS resources in time domain is. In addition, whether the PUSCH transmissions based on the different CB / NCB SRS resources need a gap period for antenna switching is not clear.

[0041] In some implementations, the issue can be addressed as will be discussed below.

[0042] A UE is configured with M AS SRS resources (e.g., SRS resource with usage of AS) , and N CB / NCB SRS resources (e.g., SRS resource with usage of CB / NCB) by the network. Here, N and M are positive integers.

[0043] The UE determines ports of N CB / NCB SRS resources according to at least one of the following:

[0044] (1) each of the N CB / NCB SRS resources has the same port set.

[0045] (2) If N CB / NCB SRS resources are associated with N of M AS SRS resources respectively, ports for N CB / NCB SRS resources are different, or each of the N CB / NCB SRS resources has the same port set, where N and M are integers, and N is less than or equal to M. In one example, ports for N CB / NCB SRS resources are different when different CB / NCB SRS resources correspond to different (Rx) antenna ports.

[0046] (a) If one first-type SRS resource is associated with one second-type SRS resource, the first-type SRS resource overlaps with the second-type SRS resource in FD and TD, or the first-type SRS resource and the second-type SRS resource have the same SRS resource ID, where the first-type SRS resource or the second-type SRS resource can be one of CB / NCB SRS resource or AS SRS resource.

[0047] In another implementation, the UE determines the relation between ports of different N CB / NCB SRS resources by itself, e.g., same or different, and reports the relation to the network.

[0048] The relation between ports of different CB / NCB SRS resources as described above can also be applied to the relation between ports of different CB / NCB SRS resource sets.

[0049] If different CB / NCB SRS resource sets have the same port sets, the relation between ports can be determined based on at least one of the following:

[0050] Each CB / NCB SRS resource in one SRS resource set has the same port sets, and different CB / NCB SRS resources in different SRS resource sets have the same port sets; or

[0051] Each CB / NCB SRS resource in one SRS resource set has the same port sets, but different CB / NCB SRS resources in different SRS resource sets have different port sets.

[0052] If different CB / NCB SRS resource sets have different port sets, the relation between ports can be determined based on at least one of the following:

[0053] Each CB / NCB SRS resource in one SRS resource set has the same port sets, but different CB / NCB SRS resources in different SRS resource sets have different port sets; or

[0054] Different CB / NCB SRS resources in one SRS resource set have different port sets, and different CB / NCB SRS resources in different SRS resource sets have different port sets.

[0055] PUSCH transmission is transmitted by UE based on SRS resource (s) indicated by scheduling information (e.g., DCI or RRC signaling) . If AS SRS and CB / NCB SRS are reused, only one kind of SRS, e.g., AS SRS is needed to be transmitted by UE. In other words, a CB / NCB SRS is configured for a UE, but such a CB / NCB SRS is not transmitted by UE.If an SRS resource in a CB / NCB SRS set is associated with an SRS resource in a AS SRS resource set, they share the same ports. The UE needs to determine transmit parameters, such as spatial relation based on an SRS resource in a CB / NCB SRS set, which is not actually transmitted, then the UE needs to determine the transmit parameters based on an associated SRS resource in an AS SRS resources set.

[0056] Embodiment 3: the port of PUCCH

[0057] Issue: It is not clear how to determine the port of PUCCH transmission

[0058] Although it does not support MIMO scheme for PUCCH transmission, PUCCH transmission is usually transmitted by one or more ports that are determined by UE and transparent to the network. However, as mentioned above, if UE has more Rx antennas than Tx antennas, the UE has more ports for Rx than ports for Tx. When the UE determines Tx  ports for UL transmission (e.g., SRS, PUSCH, PUCCH) , it has flexibility to map the ports for UL transmission to different sets of Rx antennas.

[0059] Similar to the port for SRS, the port for PUCCH is still determined by UE. If the ports for PUCCH are fixed, but the ports for PUSCH can be flexible and can be changed (e.g., from a set of antennas to another set of antennas) based on SRS resource related to SRI. In some cases, changing time is not enough if no changing information is known to the network, which schedules the DL / UL transmission. For example, PUSCH is transmitted in slot n, and it occupies the symbols including the last symbol. A PUCCH is transmitted in the next slot, e.g., slot n+1, it occupies the symbols including the first symbol. The ports for PUCCH are fixed, e.g., the ports for PUCCH are associated with the first set of antennas, but the ports for PUSCH are flexible, e.g., the ports for PUSCH are associated with the second set of antennas in slot n. From slot n to slot n+1, the UE needs to change antennas, and a gap period is needed. If there is no such consideration, the PUSCH transmission in slot n may be impacted.

[0060] In an embodiment of the disclosed technology, such issues can be address as will be discussed below.

[0061] There exists a limitation for PUSCH and PUCCH scheduling: UE is not expected to be scheduled with PUSCH transmission and PUCCH transmission, which are in continuous slots and occupy symbols without a gap period, such as a gap symbol. Alternatively, the network does not do such scheduling with PUSCH transmission and PUCCH transmission, which are in continuous slots and occupy symbols without a gap period.

[0062] In some implementations, PUSCH transmission is performed after PUCCH transmission is performed, or PUCCH transmission is performed after PUCCH transmission is performed.

[0063] The limitation exists if at least one of the following conditions is met:

[0064] (1) UE has different numbers of Tx antennas and Rx antennas;

[0065] (2) Ports of PUCCH are fixed to antennas;

[0066] (3) Ports of PUSCH are flexible to antennas;

[0067] (4) AS SRS is configured;

[0068] (5) An SRS resource in CB / NCB SRS resource set has the same SRS resource ID as that for an SRS resource in AS SRS resource set; or

[0069] (6) An SRS resource in CB / NCB SRS resource set overlaps with an SRS resource in AS SRS resource set in FD and TD.

[0070] In another embodiment of the disclosed technology, the issues discussed above can be addressed as will be discussed below.

[0071] The ports of PUCCH transmission should be kept aligned with (or same as) the ports of the latest PUSCH transmission. In other words, the ports of PUCCH transmission follows the ports of the latest PUSCH transmission. The PUSCH transmission may include at least one of the following:

[0072] (1) dynamic granted (DG) PUSCH scheduled by DCI format 0_1, or 0_2;

[0073] (2) DG PUSCH scheduled by DCI format 0_0;

[0074] (3) CG (configured granted) PUSCH type 1; or

[0075] (4) CG (configured granted) PUSCH type 2.

[0076] The latest PUSCH transmission is determined according to the ending time of PUSCH transmission.

[0077] The PUSCH and PUCCH belong to a bandwidth part (BWP)  / component carrier (CC) or within a group of CCs in a band. The UE capability within the group of CCs in the band is same. SRS carrier switching is organized in the group of CCs in the band.

[0078] As discussed above, a UE may determine the ports of PUCCH transmission according to a PUSCH transmission scheduled / triggered by DCI format 0_0.

[0079] Alternatively, a UE may determine the ports for a PUSCH transmission scheduled / triggered by DCI format 0_0 according to PUCCH transmission (or configuration) , considering that a UE determines a spatial relation for a PUSCH transmission scheduled / triggered by DCI format 0_0 according to PUCCH transmission (or configuration) .

[0080] Embodiment 4: the ports of PUSCH / PUCCH repetition transmissions

[0081] For a PUSCH / PUCCH repetition transmission, each repetition transmission can be transmitted using the port (s) according to the port (s) of one of AS SRS resources. Two or more repetition transmissions can correspond to a same AS SRS resource or different AS SRS resources. The relation between each repetition transmission and the AS SRS resource can be determined by the UE in a predetermined order, or indicated by the network.

[0082] The disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to determine the relation between the ports of SRS resource for CB / NCB and the ports of SRS resources for AS by a network node and indicate / configure the relation to a UE, via RRC signaling or MAC CE,

[0083] In some implementations, one or more AS SRS resources can be configured to overlap with SRS for CB / NCB in FD and TD, or to have the same SRS resource ID.

[0084] In some implementations, an AS SRS resource can be indicated to a CB / NCB SRS resource. The AS SRS resource can be indicated using an SRS resource set ID, and an SRS resource index within the indicated SRS resource set.

[0085] In some implementations, the relation between ports of SRS resource for CB / NCB and ports of AS SRS resources can be determined by a UE and can be reported to the network.

[0086] The disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to determine the ports for different SRS resources for CB / NCB to be same or different according to the following:

[0087] (1) Each of the N CB / NCB SRS resources correspond to same port set; or

[0088] (2) If N CB / NCB SRS resources are associated with N of M AS SRS resources respectively, the ports for N CB / NCB SRS resources are different, otherwise each of the N CB / NCB SRS resources has the same port set, e.g., based on SRS resource ID, or TD / FD resource.

[0089] The disclosed technology can be implemented in some embodiments to determine the ports of PUCCH.

[0090] In some implementations, there are restrictions for the scheduling of PUSCH and PUCCH: UE is not expected to be scheduled with PUSCH transmission and PUCCH transmission which are in continuous slots and occupy symbols without a gap period, in a case that some conditions discussed above are met.

[0091] In some implementations, the ports of PUCCH transmission stays aligned with the ports of the latest PUSCH transmission.

[0092] FIG. 4 shows an example of a process 400 for wireless communication based on some example embodiments of the disclosed technology.

[0093] In some implementations, the process 400 for wireless communication may include, at 410, receiving, by a wireless device, from a network node, a configuration of a plurality of resources of a first usage type corresponding to antenna switching (AS) , at 420, determining at least one antenna port for a transmission according to the plurality of resources of the first usage type, and at 430, transmitting, by the wireless device, the transmission using the determined at least one antenna port.

[0094] FIG. 5 shows another example of a process 500 for wireless communication based on some example embodiments of the disclosed technology.

[0095] In some implementations, the process 500 for wireless communication may include, at 510, transmitting, by a network node, to a wireless device, a configuration of a  plurality of resources of a first usage type corresponding to antenna switching (AS) , and at 520, receiving, by the network node, from the wireless device, a transmission using at least one antenna port determined according to the plurality of resources of the first usage type.

[0096] It will be appreciated that the present document discloses techniques that can be embodied in various embodiments to determine downlink control information in wireless networks. The disclosed and other embodiments, modules and the functional operations described in this document can be implemented in digital electronic circuitry, or in computer software, firmware, or hardware, including the structures disclosed in this document and their structural equivalents, or in combinations of one or more of them. The disclosed and other embodiments can be implemented as one or more computer program products, i.e., one or more modules of computer program instructions encoded on a computer readable medium for execution by, or to control the operation of, data processing apparatus. The computer readable medium can be a machine-readable storage device, a machine-readable storage substrate, a memory device, a composition of matter effecting a machine-readable propagated signal, or a combination of one or more them. The term “data processing apparatus” encompasses all apparatus, devices, and machines for processing data, including by way of example a programmable processor, a computer, or multiple processors or computers. The apparatus can include, in addition to hardware, code that creates an execution environment for the computer program in question, e.g., code that constitutes processor firmware, a protocol stack, a database management system, an operating system, or a combination of one or more of them. A propagated signal is an artificially generated signal, e.g., a machine-generated electrical, optical, or electromagnetic signal, that is generated to encode information for transmission to suitable receiver apparatus.
