Abstract
Description
[0001] Temperature-activated safety device
[0002] State of the art
[0003] The invention relates to a temperature-activated safety device (TPRD) for gases and / or liquids according to the preamble of claim 1.
[0004] Compressed gas cylinders for storing gaseous fuels such as natural gas or hydrogen with nominal pressures up to 700 bar are protected by, among other things, a temperature-activated safety device (TPRD). The TPRD opens a flow path to drain the pressure cylinder at high temperatures, such as during a fire, to prevent it from bursting. Depending on the length of the compressed gas cylinder, several TPRDs are installed, with the nominal diameter having a significant influence on the drain rate.
[0005] The TPRD comprises a temperature-sensitive trigger element such as a fusible material or a liquid-filled glass body.
[0006] Such a TPRD with a fusible material as a temperature-sensitive trigger element is known, among other things, from DE19600312 or EP1418372A1. The trigger element is generally a eutectic alloy, and this alloy melts under the influence of heat at or above a specified trigger temperature. A disadvantage is that the forces acting on the fusible material from the pressurized sealing piston deform or push away the fusible material with increasing inlet cross-section, increasing nominal pressure, and increasing number of cyclic loading and unloading loads, causing the TPRD to leak. Blockages of the outlet cross-section caused by the fusible link have also been reported in the literature.
[0007] Such a TPRD with a closed glass body and an enclosed bursting liquid as a temperature-sensitive triggering element is known, among other things, from DE102010027977B4, wherein the glass body bursts due to the effects of heat at or above a specified triggering temperature as a result of the expanding liquid inside the glass body. A disadvantage is that the forces acting on the glass body from the pressurized sealing piston abrade the glass body with increasing inlet cross-section, increasing nominal pressure, and increasing number of loads from cyclic loading and unloading, which either causes the glass body to break and the TPRD to trigger unpredictably, or causes the explosive liquid to leak out without the glass body breaking, thus never triggering the TPRD. Pressure-equalized TPRDs, such as those from US 6367500, are also known to those skilled in the art to overcome the aforementioned disadvantages. The disadvantages are the structural complexity with either two sealing points and a required opening spring, whereby the TPRD does not trigger if the opening spring breaks, or one sealing point and a force redirection mechanism.
[0008] Technical task
[0009] The object of the invention is to create a TPRD with a fusible material as a trigger element in a simple and cost-effective design for large inlet cross-sections, high cyclic load capacity and low risk of clogging.
[0010] Technical solution
[0011] The task is achieved by reducing the specific surface load of the fusible material and by reducing the amount of fusible material used.
[0012] To reduce the specific surface load, several temperature-sensitive trigger elements are connected in parallel. This means that at least two temperature-sensitive trigger elements are arranged in parallel with respect to the force transmission, so that the total load capacity of the TPRD due to the container pressure is equal to the sum of the load capacities of the individual sensitive trigger elements. This arrangement distributes the total load proportionally among the individual fusible materials. Due to its high strength, a fusible link is preferably used as the fusible material, with the fusible link preferably being arranged so that it is predominantly exposed to shear stress.
[0013] To reduce the risk of clogging, the individual elements of the supporting structure are connected to one another by thin solder layers with a layer thickness of 5 pm to 1 mm, particularly preferably with a layer thickness of 20 pm to 0.2 mm, whereby the solder layer thickness depends on the base material and the solder material.
[0014] In all embodiments, the TPRD comprises a housing with an inlet and an outlet, between which a flow path is defined, a movable sealing body for opening and closing the flow path, a supporting structure with several simultaneously force-bearing temperature-sensitive elements, the state of which influences the position of the sealing body between a closed position and an open position, and a support structure for transmitting the forces acting on the sealing body and transmitted via the temperature-sensitive trigger elements into the surrounding housing. The temperature-sensitive elements are arranged between the sealing body and a support structure and fix the sealing body in the closed position when the TPRD is not triggered, with the fusible link firmly connecting the components of the supporting structure to one another, thus enabling force transmission. At the trigger temperature of the TPRD, the solder melts so that the components are no longer rigidly connected to each other and the displacement of parts of the supporting structure is possible, whereby the sealing body is moved into the open position by the compressive force.
[0015] In a further embodiment, a manually operable valve is integrated into the TPRD according to the invention, whereby the container or the space in the flow path in front of the sealing body of the TPRD is emptied.
[0016] In a further embodiment, a pressure relief valve is integrated into the TPRD according to the invention, whereby the container or the pressurized components in the flow path in the flow direction upstream of the sealing body are protected from an inadmissible overpressure.
[0017] In a further embodiment, an indicator for the trigger status of the TPRD is integrated into the TPRD according to the invention, whereby it can be easily determined whether the TPRD has triggered or not.
[0018] In a further embodiment, a travel and / or force and / or torque limitation in the closing direction is integrated into the TPRD according to the invention in order to limit the load on the temperature-sensitive elements and / or the sealing surfaces and / or the tool holder during assembly.
[0019] In a further embodiment, a safety device in the opening direction is integrated into the TPRD according to the invention in order to prevent independent disassembly due to vibrations or unintentional disassembly of the TPRD.
[0020] The supporting structure, consisting of several temperature-sensitive elements acting in parallel and transmitting force, distributes the compressive force on the sealing body across multiple brazing layers, reducing the specific surface load of the fusible link and allowing the TPRD to withstand a higher compressive force and / or a higher number of pressure cycles overall. The use of thin brazing layers effectively prevents the drain from clogging due to the melted and re-solidified fusible link.
[0021] Further features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of possible embodiments and from the drawings.
[0022] Embodiment
[0023] The features of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a possible embodiment and from the drawings.
[0024] Fig. 1 shows a preferred embodiment of the TPRD in the closed state
[0025] Fig. 2 shows a preferred embodiment of the TPRD in the open state
[0026] Fig. 1 shows a possible embodiment of the TPRD (100) as an inline valve in the non-triggered, i.e. closed, state with a fusible link as a temperature-sensitive triggering element (1) in the non-triggered, i.e. non-melted state in a section of a carrier body (2) with a flow path (3) between an inlet (4) for supplying the fluid from a storage container, an outlet (5) for discharging the gas into the environment and a sealing seat (6) in the flow path (3) for sealing the flow path (3) by a sealing body (7). The sealing body (7) seals with its sealing surface (8) against the sealing seat (6) in the carrier body (2) and is supported on the opposite side on a support sleeve (9), wherein the flow path (3) comprises one or more transverse bores (10) and an internal bore (11) of the support sleeve (9).The support sleeve (9) is connected via the release elements (1) on the inside to an inner support body (12) and on the outside to an outer support body (13), wherein the release elements (1) transfer the forces acting on the sealing body (7) and transmitted via the support sleeve (9) to the two support bodies (12, 13) by means of shear stresses. The flow path (3) comprises an internal bore (14) of the inner support sleeve (12). The two support bodies (12, 13) bear axially against a holding element (15). The holding element (15) transfers the forces acting on the sealing body (7) and transmitted via the support sleeve (9) and the release elements (1) to the support bodies (12, 13) and the holding element (15) via a threaded connection (16) from the holding element (15) to the carrier body (2).The holding element (15) comprises a tool holder (17) for absorbing a torque in order to move all components connected to the holding element (15) during assembly and thereby press the sealing body (7) against the support body (2) for sealing purposes. The holding element (15) further comprises an internal bore (18) as part of the flow path (3). In this operating state, a gap (19) is present in the axial direction between the support sleeve (9) and the holding element (15). The fusible link, as a temperature-sensitive element (1), connects the support sleeve (9) to the two support bodies (12, 13) and forms a supporting structure with two coaxially arranged force-transmitting regions for transmitting the compressive forces acting on the sealing body (7) via the holding element (15) to the support body (2).
[0027] Fig. 2 shows a possible embodiment of the TPRD (100) as an inline valve in the triggered, i.e., open, state with a fusible link as the temperature-sensitive triggering element (1) in the triggered, i.e., molten, state due to external heat input at a temperature above the triggering temperature of the temperature-sensitive triggering element (1). Due to the melting of the fusible link, the force-transmitting connections between the support sleeve (9) and the two support bodies (12, 13) are lost, whereby the sealing body (7) and the support sleeve (9) are displaced in the axial direction by the prevailing pressure forces on the sealing body (7) until the sealing surface (8) of the sealing body (7) no longer rests against the sealing seat (6) of the carrier body (2), the flow path (2) is fully open, and the fluid flows out of the storage container into the environment. In this operating state, the gap (19) is closed, i.e.,the support sleeve (9) rests against the holding element (15) in the axial direction.
[0028] The sealing body (7) can assume two positions in the longitudinal direction of the TPRD (100), with each position of the sealing body (7) being assigned to a function of the TPRD (100): In the first position, i.e. when the TPRD (100) is closed, the flow path (3) between the inlet (4) and the outlet (5) is closed. Opening of the flow path (3) is possible from this position by triggering the TPRDS in the event of heat exposure above the triggering temperature of the TPRD or by the response of a possibly integrated pressure relief valve in the event of a pressure difference between the inlet (4) and the outlet (5) above the opening pressure of the pressure relief valve. In the second position, ie when the TPRD (100) is open, the flow path (3) between the inlet (4) and the outlet (5) is open, regardless of the state of an integrated pressure relief valve, at least when the pressure conditions between the inlet (4) and the outlet (5) are suitable. When the TPRD is triggered, the support sleeve (9) is normally axially supported on the retaining element (15), and the gap (19) is completely or at least partially closed. When the TPRD is not triggered, the support sleeve (9) is axially spaced from the retaining element (15), and the gap (19) is normally fully open.
[0029] By suitable dimensions of the components of the combination valve (100), an elastic or only slight plastic deformation of the individual parts concerned is always achieved, whereby tolerance-related, thermal and pressure-related length changes are compensated and damage is avoided.

Optionally, a manually operable valve for reducing the pressure in the inlet (4) is integrated into the TPRD (100), wherein the emptying of the pressurized space in the flow direction upstream of the sealing body (7) takes place by changing the position of the holding element (15), ieBy applying a force or a torque to the tool holder (17) of the holding element (15) in the opening direction of the TPRD, the flow path (3) is opened by the associated change in position of the sealing body (7) from the closed position to an open position, and by applying a force or a torque to the tool holder (17) of the holding element (15) in the closing direction of the TPRD, the flow path (3) is closed again by the associated change in position of the sealing body (7) from an open position to the closed position. This process can be repeated as often as required due to the high load-bearing capacity of the temperature-sensitive trigger element (1) and the preferably axial sealing of the sealing body (7) in the carrier body (2).
[0057] Optionally, a pressure relief valve for limiting the pressure in the inlet (4) is integrated into the TPRD (100), wherein an elastic element such as a disc spring presses the sealing body (7) against the carrier body (2) for sealing purposes, wherein the elastic element is preferably arranged between the sealing body (7) and the support sleeve (9) or is designed as part of the sealing body (7) and / or as part of the support sleeve (9). In the closed position of the TPRD (100), the sealing body (7) is pressed from the open position into the closed position by the spring force of the elastic element, so that the sealing body (7) seals against the carrier body (2). When the pressure in the inlet (4) is above the opening pressure of the pressure relief valve, the inlet pressure presses the sealing body (7) from the closed position into the open position against the force of the elastic element, whereby the medium flows out of the inlet (4) and reduces the pressure in the inlet (4).When the pressure in the inlet (4) is below the opening pressure of the pressure relief valve, the force of the elastic element pushes the sealing body (7) from the open position to the closed position, counter to the inlet pressure. The gap (19) is preferably designed to extend the opening stroke or part of the opening stroke of the pressure relief valve.
[0058] Optionally, an indicator is formed in the TPRD (100) which makes the operating state or the triggering state of the TPRD visible, e.g. a green color marking is visible in the closed position and / or a red color marking is visible in the open position and / or the support sleeve (9) or a separate component protrudes from the holding element (15) in the triggered state.
[0059] Optionally, a safety device is formed in the TPRD (100) to prevent the holding element (15) from opening automatically due to vibrations or to prevent the holding element (15) from opening accidentally or by manipulation, e.g. the holding element (15) is fixed in the closed position by a lock nut, a pin or a locking ring and / or a cover or an O-ring prevents direct access to the tool holder (17).
[0060] Optionally, a travel, force or torque limitation in the closing direction is formed in the TPRD (100) to prevent damage to the TPRD (100), in particular damage to the sealing surface (8), the sealing seat (6) or the temperature-sensitive elements (1), during assembly
[0061] Optionally, a torque limitation is provided in the TPRD (100) to prevent damage to the tool holder (17).
