Description

[0001] Round filter element and filter system

[0002] This patent application claims priority from German patent application 102023124081.1, filed on September 7, 2023 with the German Patent and Trademark Office, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference.

[0003] Technical area

[0004] The invention relates to a round filter element for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, for a filter system, in particular for an air filter system of a fuel cell system, and a filter system with a round filter element.

[0005] State of the art

[0006] Fuel cell systems often require a particulate filter and a sorption filter to filter both particulates and harmful gases from the intake air. The filter media bodies for the various filtration stages typically have different dimensions.

[0007] US 20181491 19 A1 shows a filter assembly with a round filter element with a filter medium body, in whose open end plate, which provides an outlet for the filtered fluid, an adsorber element is arranged. The fluid filtered through the filter medium body flows over the adsorber element, allowing any pollutants still present in the filtered fluid to be adsorbed.

[0008] DE 102016004316 A1 discloses a flat secondary element that is inserted into the open end plate of a round main filter element on a clean side of the filter element and through which air flows axially during operation. The secondary element is separate from the main filter element and comprises only a particle filter medium. The secondary filter element essentially serves to prevent contamination of a clean side of the filter element assembly with the raw fluid to be filtered when the main filter element is replaced.

[0009] Disclosure of the invention

[0010] An object of the invention is to provide a service-friendly and cost-effective round filter element for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, for a filter system, in particular for an air filter system of a fuel cell system, with a sorption element.

[0011] A further task is to provide a filter system with such a service-friendly and cost-effective round filter element.

[0012] The above-mentioned object is achieved according to one aspect of the invention by a round filter element for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, for a filter system, in particular for an air filter system of a fuel cell system, at least comprising a filter medium body which rotates around a longitudinal axis and has a particle filter medium which surrounds an interior space, two end bodies which delimit the filter medium body on opposite end faces, wherein at least one end body is an open end plate and has a passage opening which communicates fluidically with the interior space, a sorption element which is arranged in the passage opening of the open end plate and is directly or indirectly fixedly connected to the filter medium body or the end plate, wherein the sorption element can be flowed through by the fluid in the direction of the longitudinal axis serially to the filter medium body in an operating state, wherein the sorption element is sealed against the passage opening.,

[0013] The further object is achieved by a filter system for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, in particular of a fuel cell system, with a filter housing with a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and with at least one round filter element which is arranged between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet.

[0014] Advantageous embodiments and advantages of the invention emerge from the further claims, the description and the drawing.

[0015] According to one aspect of the invention, a round filter element for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, for a filter system, in particular for an air filter system of a fuel cell system, is proposed, comprising at least a filter medium body rotating about a longitudinal axis and having a particle filter medium surrounding an interior space, two end bodies that delimit the filter medium body on opposite end faces, wherein at least one end body is an open end plate and has a passage opening that communicates fluidically with the interior space, and a sorption element that is arranged in the passage opening of the open end plate and is directly or indirectly fixedly connected to the filter medium body or the end plate. In an operating state, the fluid can flow through the sorption element in the direction of the longitudinal axis in series with the filter medium body. The sorption element is sealed against the passage opening.

[0016] The proposed round filter element comprises a filter medium body designed as a particle filter, and a sorption element, which can be designed as an adsorption element or an absorption element. The round filter element and the sorption element can be provided with a common open end plate, which has a passage opening for the filtered fluid. Thus, the sorption element can be firmly connected to the filter medium body and / or the open end plate.

[0017] By using a common end plate, the sealing of both elements, filter medium body and sorption element, can be carried out in one process step, which has a positive effect on production costs.

[0018] The particle filter can, for example, be designed as a folded cellulose or synthetic bellows.

[0019] For the adsorption of harmful gases, the sorption element can contain activated carbon, for example, which can be enclosed between synthetic media layers to form an activated carbon medium. This activated carbon medium can be processed into a pleated bellows or, alternatively, a cylindrical wound bellows.

[0020] Solutions are also conceivable in which the activated carbon is incorporated into a flow-permeable, closed hollow body. Coated honeycomb bodies represent another alternative for harmful gas adsorption. The shared open end plate between the filter medium body and the sorption element can be made of plastic, polyurethane (PUR) foam, or sheet metal, for example.

[0021] The filter medium body, as a particle filter, is subjected to radial flow in the round filter element, while gas adsorption in the sorption element occurs in the axial flow direction. The sorption element can also extend into the clean air line of the filter housing and / or the fluid outlet of the filter housing, i.e., outside the end plate.

[0022] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can be at least partially embedded with an axially extending outer side into the open end plate. In particular, the round filter element can be firmly bonded to the open end plate. In this way, the sorption element can be tightly connected to the end plate, so that the filtered fluid of the filter medium body must flow completely through the sorption element, thus allowing pollutants to be advantageously adsorbed or absorbed.

[0023] According to a favorable design of the round filter element, the sorption element can extend at least partially into the interior of the filter medium body in the direction of the longitudinal axis. This allows a larger volume of the sorption element to be made available for the adsorption or absorption of the harmful gases.

[0024] According to a favorable design of the round filter element, the sorption element can at least partially protrude beyond the front end of the open end plate of the filter medium body in the direction of the longitudinal axis. This allows a larger volume of the sorption element to be made available for the adsorption or absorption of the harmful gases.

[0025] According to a favorable design of the round filter element, the sorption element can be defined along its longitudinal axis by opposing end faces, with one end face of the sorption element being flush with the open end plate. Thus, the sorption element can be arranged flush with the exterior of the round filter element or flush with the interior.

[0026] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can have a cuboid contour, with outer edges aligned substantially in the direction of the longitudinal axis. A diagonal of an end face of the cuboid contour can correspond at most to the diameter of the passage opening of the end plate. The cuboid contour represents a cost-effective embodiment of a sorption element, particularly in the case of a sorption element with a pleated activated carbon medium.

[0027] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can have a cylindrical contour, which is aligned with a cylinder axis parallel, in particular centered, to the longitudinal axis. The sorption element can be arranged radially within the passage opening. A cylindrical contour can advantageously fill a round opening in the end plate, particularly in the case of a hollow-cylindrical filter medium body, so that the largest possible cross-section is available for the fluid to flow through the sorption element.

[0028] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can comprise a pleated sorption medium, wherein the pleated edges of the sorption medium can be arranged obliquely, in particular perpendicularly, to the longitudinal axis. In this way, a large surface area of the sorption element's medium can be available for adsorbing or absorbing the harmful gases.

[0029] According to a favorable design of the round filter element, the sorption element can have a sorption medium wound around its longitudinal axis. Such an arrangement of the sorption medium of the sorption element can also be manufactured cost-effectively and, at the same time, provides the largest possible surface area for adsorption or absorption of the fluid to be filtered.

[0030] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can have a side band on at least one axially extending outer side. The axially extending outer side can also be referred to as the axial outer side. In particular, the round filter element can be tightly sealed by the side band.

[0031] In particular, the side band can be embedded in the open end plate, in particular, bonded to the open end plate. On the one hand, the sorption element can be advantageously sealed on the outer sides, especially by folds of a folded sorption medium. On the other hand, the side band can be advantageously used to connect it to the end plate. For example, the side band can be cast into the end plate and thus firmly connected to the end plate.

[0032] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can comprise a sorption medium in the form of a bulk material. The bulk material can be arranged, for example, in a plastic housing with openings for fluid flow, and this also represents a very cost-effective embodiment of a sorption element. For this purpose, the end faces of the housing in the direction of the longitudinal axis can be covered, for example, with a nonwoven fabric through which the fluid can flow.

[0033] According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, a fleece can be arranged on the end faces of the sorption element. In particular, at least one end face, in particular at least one downstream end face, can have stiffening ribs. The sorption medium can thus advantageously be arranged between the two end faces provided with fleece. To stiffen against the flow pressure of the flowing fluid, stiffening ribs, in particular cross ribs, can be arranged on at least one end face, in particular on at least one downstream end face. According to a favorable embodiment of the round filter element, the sorption element can have a honeycomb structure which has open channels in the direction of the longitudinal axis. The honeycomb structure can comprise the sorption medium. In particular, the honeycomb structure can be coated with the sorption medium.Such a honeycomb structure can be inexpensively manufactured, for example, as a plastic extrusion. The application of activated carbon can advantageously provide a mechanically stable and lightweight sorption element for the adsorption or absorption of harmful gases.

[0034] According to a further aspect of the invention, a filter system is proposed for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, in particular of a fuel cell system, comprising a filter housing with a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and with at least one round filter element which is arranged between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet.

[0035] The proposed filter system can advantageously filter out particles, especially dirt particles, from the fluid, especially air, and also adsorb or absorb harmful gases on the sorption element. Such an arrangement of a sorption element in a round filter element represents a particularly cost-effective and effective solution, since the entire fluid filtered by the particle filter must flow through the sorption element. This ensures efficient adsorption or absorption of harmful gases in the filter system.

[0065] Embodiments of the invention

[0066] In the figures, identical or similar components are numbered with the same reference numerals. The figures show only examples and are not to be understood as limiting.

[0067] The directional terminology used below, including terms such as "left," "right," "top," "bottom," "before," "behind," "after," and the like, is intended solely to enhance understanding of the figures and is in no way intended to limit the scope of the invention. The components and elements depicted, as well as their design and use, may vary according to the considerations of a person skilled in the art and may be adapted to specific applications.

[0068] Figure 1 shows an isometric exploded view of a filter system 100 for filtering a fluid, in particular for filtering air, in particular of a fuel cell system, according to an embodiment of the invention, while Figure 2 shows a longitudinal section through the filter system 100. Figure 3 shows an isometric view of the round filter element 10 arranged in the filter system 100, while Figure 4 shows a longitudinal section through the round filter element 10. The filter system 100 comprises a filter housing 110 with a tangentially arranged fluid inlet 102 and an axially arranged fluid outlet 104. In the filter housing, which has a first housing part 112 and a second housing part 114, a round filter element 10 is arranged in the longitudinal axis 80 between the fluid inlet 102 and the fluid outlet 104.

[0069] The round filter element 10 comprises a filter medium body 12, which extends around the longitudinal axis 80 and contains a particle filter medium and surrounds an interior space 14. The filter medium body 12 can be designed, for example, as a folded cellulose or synthetic bellows.

[0070] The round filter element 10 further comprises two end bodies 20, 22, which delimit the filter medium body 12 at opposite end faces 16, 18. One of the end bodies 20 is designed as an open end plate 24 and has a passage opening 26 that fluidically communicates with the interior space 14. Filtered fluid can flow through the passage opening 26 of the end plate into the fluid outlet 104.

[0071] The other end body 22 is also designed as an end plate 25.

[0072] The end plates 24, 25 can be made of plastic, polyurethane (PUR) foam or sheet metal, for example.

[0073] The end plate 24 has a circumferential seal 30 which is formed from the material of the end plate 24 and is aligned in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80.

[0074] Since the fluid flows through the round filter element 10 from radially outside to inside, this seal 30 can be used to seal a raw fluid region 82 located radially outside the round filter element 10 against the clean fluid region 84 located in the interior 14 of the round filter element 10.

[0075] The second end plate 25 has axially projecting support elements 32. When the round filter element 10 is installed in the filter housing 110, the round filter element 10 is clamped against the filter housing 110 by means of the seal 30 and the support elements 32 as soon as the first housing part 112 is connected, for example, screwed or clamped, to the second housing part 114.

[0076] Furthermore, the round filter element 10 comprises a sorption element 40, which is arranged in the passage opening 26 of the open end plate 24 and is directly or indirectly fixedly connected to the filter medium body 12 or the end plate 24. In an operating state, the fluid can flow through the sorption element 40 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80 in series with the filter medium body 12.

[0077] As can be seen in Figure 4, the sorption element 40 protrudes at least partially into the interior 14 of the filter medium body 12 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80. The sorption element 40 is delimited in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80 by opposite end faces 46, 48. One end face 46 of the sorption element 40 is flush with the open end plate 24. Figure 5 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10. Figure 6 shows a top view of the round filter element 10.

[0078] As can be seen in Figures 5 and 6, the sorption element 40 has a cuboid-shaped contour 50, which is aligned with outer edges 45 substantially in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80. A diagonal 52 of an end face 46, 48 of the cuboid-shaped contour 50 corresponds at most to a diameter 34 of the passage opening 26 of the end plate 24. This means that the sorption element 40, as shown, can be fitted with its outer contour into the passage opening 26 of the end plate 24.

[0079] For adsorbing harmful gases, the sorption element 40 can comprise, for example, activated carbon, which can be processed into an activated carbon medium enclosed between synthetic media layers. This activated carbon medium can be processed into a pleated bellows. In Figures 1 to 7, the sorption element 40 comprises such a folded sorption medium 42, the pleated edges 56 of which are arranged perpendicular to the longitudinal axis 80.

[0080] The sorption element 40 has a side band 58 on the axially extending outer sides 44. The folds 55 of the sorption medium 42 are thus tightly sealed by this side band 58.

[0081] Figure 7 shows a detail of the longitudinal section through the round filter element 10 according to Figure 4. It shows how the sorption element 40 is connected to the end plate 24. The folds 55 of the sorption element 40 are sealed with the side band 58 on the axially extending outer sides 44 of the cuboid contour 50. The outermost fold 55 and the side band 58 are integrated into the material of the end plate 24, in particular, they are integrally bonded to the end plate 24. For this purpose, the side band 58 can, for example, be cast into the end plate 24.

[0082] In this way, the sorption element 40 is effectively sealed against the passage opening 26 of the end plate 24.

[0083] Figure 8 shows a longitudinal section through a round filter element 10 according to a further embodiment of the invention. Figure 9 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10, while Figure 10 shows a top view of the round filter element 10, and Figure 11 shows a detail of the longitudinal section through the round filter element 10.

[0084] The round filter element 10 shown in Figures 8 to 11 is constructed similarly to the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 7. The sorption element 40 also has a folded sorption medium 42, but as a cylindrical contour 54, which is aligned with a cylinder axis parallel, in particular centered, to the longitudinal axis 80. The sorption element 40, which is arranged radially within the passage opening 26 of the end plate 24, completely fills the passage opening 26.

[0085] Such a cylindrical contour 54 can be achieved by trimming a cuboid filter bellows at the outer edges, for example, with a laser. The sorption element 40 is also sealed with a side band 58 on the axially extending outer side 44. The sectional view in Figure 11 shows that the sorption element 40 with the outermost folds 55 and the side band 58 is also embedded in the end plate 24, in particular, is cast with the end plate 24.

[0086] Figure 12 shows a longitudinal section through a round filter element 10 according to another embodiment of the invention. Figure 13 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10, while Figure 14 shows a top view of the round filter element 10.

[0087] In this embodiment, the sorption element 40, which also has a cylindrical contour 54, comprises a sorption medium 42 wound around the longitudinal axis 80. The activated carbon medium can thus be easily wound into a filter bellows. The outer side 44 can optionally be sealed with a side band 58, as shown in Figure 13. Such a sorption element 40 can be manufactured cost-effectively and can completely fill the passage opening 26 of the end plate 24 without having to be appropriately cut.

[0088] Figure 15 shows a longitudinal section through a round filter element 10 according to another embodiment of the invention. Figure 16 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10, while Figure 17 shows a top view of the round filter element 10.

[0089] As can be seen in Figure 15, the sorption element 40 protrudes at least partially beyond the end face 16 of the open end plate 24 of the filter medium body 12 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80. The sorption element 40 is thus arranged partly in the interior 14 and partly in the exterior of the round filter element 10.

[0090] In addition, the sorption element 40, which is formed with a cylindrical contour 54, has a sorption medium 42 designed as a bulk material 60. The bulk material 60 can be arranged, for example, in a housing 70, for example a plastic housing, wherein a fleece 62 can be arranged on each of the end faces 46, 48 of the sorption element 40. The fleece 62 holds the bulk material 60 in the housing 70 and still allows the fluid to flow axially through the sorption element 40. To counteract the flow pressure of the flowing fluid, at least one end face 46, 48, in particular at least the downstream end face 46, can have stiffening ribs 64. These stiffening ribs 64 can, for example, be arranged in the form of cross ribs above the end face 46.

[0091] On the outer side 44, the housing 70 can have a circumferential frame 72, at least partially with openings 74, which can be integrated into the end plate 24. In particular, the openings 74 in the frame 72 enable the best possible interlocking with the end plate 24. When the end plate 24 is cast with the frame 72, a firm connection can thus be established between the sorption element 40 and the end plate 24. Figure 18 shows a longitudinal section through a round filter element 10 according to a further embodiment of the invention. Figure 19 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10, while Figure 20 shows a plan view of the round filter element 10. Figure 21 shows a detail of the plan view according to Figure 20.

[0092] As can be seen in Figure 18, the sorption element 40 terminates with the end face 16 of the open end plate 24 of the filter medium body 12 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80. The sorption element 40 is thus arranged in the interior space 14 of the round filter element 10.

[0093] As can be seen in Figure 19 and particularly in the detailed view in Figure 21, the sorption element 40, which is formed with a cylindrical contour 54, has a honeycomb structure 66. The honeycomb structure 66 has open channels 68 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80, through which the fluid to be filtered can flow. For this purpose, the honeycomb structure 66 can have the sorption medium 42. In particular, the honeycomb structure 66 can be coated with the sorption medium 42. The honeycomb structure 66 can, for example, be efficiently manufactured as a plastic extrusion.

[0094] The sorption element 40 further comprises, like the previous embodiment, a frame 72 surrounding the sorption element 40 with an opening 74, which can expediently be embedded, in particular cast, in the end plate 24 of the round filter element 10.

[0095] As can be seen particularly in the enlarged detailed view in Figure 21, the honeycomb structure 66 shown in the exemplary embodiment of Figures 18 to 21 has identical channels 68 with a square cross-section for the fluid to flow through. Alternatively, however, it is also possible for the channels to have different, even irregularly shaped, cross-sections.

[0096] Figure 22 shows a longitudinal section through a round filter element 10 according to a further embodiment of the invention. Figure 23 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10, while Figure 24 shows a top view of the round filter element 10. Figure 25 shows a detail of the longitudinal section according to Figure 22.

[0097] The embodiment illustrated in Figures 22 to 25 has a similar sorption body 40 in a honeycomb structure 66 as the embodiment illustrated in Figures 18 to 21. The difference is that the sorption element 40 illustrated in Figures 22 to 25 protrudes at least partially beyond the end face 16 from the open end plate 24 of the filter medium body 12 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80. The sorption element 40 is thus arranged partly in the interior 14 and partly in the exterior of the round filter element 10.

[0098] The detailed view in Figure 25 shows, in longitudinal section, the connection of the sorption element 40 to the open end plate 24. In particular, the seal 30 can be foamed onto the wall of the sorption element 40. The longitudinal section in Figure 25 shows the embedding of the frame 72 of the sorption element 40 in the material of the end plate 24. The openings 74 in the frame 72 serve to improve interlocking with the material of the end plate 24. Figure 26 shows a longitudinal section through a round filter element 10 according to a further embodiment of the invention. Figure 27 shows an isometric view of the sorption element 40 of the round filter element 10, while Figure 28 shows a top view of the round filter element 10. Figure 29 shows a detail of the longitudinal section according to Figure 26.

[0099] In this embodiment, the sorption element 40 is arranged completely in the outer space of the round filter element 10 and projects in the direction of the longitudinal axis 80 beyond the end plate 24 into the fluid outlet 104 of the filter housing 110.

[0100] The sorption element 40 is again formed in a honeycomb structure 66, as in the two previous embodiments. The longitudinal section in Figure 29 shows the embedding of the frame 72 of the sorption element 40 into the material of the end plate 24. The openings 74 in the frame 72 serve to improve interlocking with the material of the end plate 24.
