[0001] Description

[0002] Drywall anchor and method for installing the drywall anchor

[0003] The invention relates to a drywall anchor having the features of the preamble of claim 1 and a method for assembling the drywall anchor according to claim 14.

[0004] A generic drywall anchor for self-drilling screwing into a plasterboard is known from patent specification US 7,762,751 B2. The drywall anchor comprises a cylindrical base body with an external thread. At the front end of the base body, a drilling element is arranged in one piece with a central drill bit and a drilling cutting edge with two cutting sections running radially outwards from the drill bit to a longitudinal axis. The cutting sections run at an angle to the longitudinal axis from the drill bit to the front to the rear and outwards away from the longitudinal axis. When the drywall anchor is screwed in with rotation, the drilling element drills a hole into the plasterboard. After drilling the hole, the known drywall anchor is screwed into the hole until a flange, which is arranged circumferentially at the rear end of the base body, rests against an outer side of the plasterboard. To attach an attachment, such as a hook, to the plasterboard, the attachment is placed on the flange and a screw is screwed into a screw channel in the base body. The base body expands in a slotted area and splits at a predetermined breaking point in a front area of the base body into two expansion bodies that engage behind the back of the plasterboard, so that the drywall anchor, and thus the attachment, is firmly and securely attached to the plasterboard.

[0005] Another drywall anchor is known from European patent EP 3 577 350 B1. This anchor features a metal blade as a drilling element, which is axially and rotationally fixedly connected to the base body of the anchor by overmolding. This drilling element also features a drill bit and a cutting edge with two cutting sections extending radially outward along a longitudinal axis.

[0006] Furthermore, published patent application DE 10 2020 107 225 A1 discloses a drywall anchor in which, unlike the two drywall anchors described above, the drilling element is not permanently connected to the base body. With this drywall anchor, a reusable tool for installing the drywall anchor is inserted through the base body. The part of the tool that protrudes forward beyond the front end of the base body forms a cutting element with a drill bit and a cutting element at its front end for drilling a hole in the plasterboard.

[0007] The object of the invention is to provide a drywall anchor for self-drilling screwing, the assembly of which is improved.

[0008] This object is achieved according to the invention by a drywall anchor having the features of claim 1 and by a method for assembling the drywall anchor according to claim 14. The dependent claims relate to advantageous embodiments and further developments of the invention.

[0009] The drywall anchor according to the invention for self-drilling insertion into a plasterboard comprises a base body and a drilling element. In particular, the drywall anchor also has an external thread for cutting into the plasterboard, which is arranged on the base body, so that the drywall anchor can be screwed into the plasterboard in a self-drilling manner.

[0010] “Self-drilling installation” means that the drywall anchor according to the invention is suitable for creating a drill hole in the plasterboard when inserted, into which the drywall anchor is fastened, in particular by screwing in the external thread. The drilling of the drill hole and the insertion of the drywall anchor into the drill hole take place in a single installation step, i.e. without planned interruptions and without changing tools. For this purpose, the drywall anchor is placed with its drilling element at the front end on a visible side of the plasterboard. The drywall anchor is then rotated about its longitudinal axis, for example using a cordless screwdriver, and pressed against the plasterboard. The drilling element cuts the drill hole in the board, into which the drywall anchor is inserted, in particular screwed. When screwed in, the external thread cuts into the plasterboard in the area of the drill hole wall. This avoids a two-stage installation process, with pre-drilling of the borehole and subsequent insertion, which requires two assembly steps with different tools and thus more work and time.

[0011] The drywall anchor extends from a rear end to a front end along a longitudinal axis of the drywall anchor, which is in particular also the longitudinal axis of the base body and that of the drilling element. At its rear end, which in particular also forms the rear end of the drywall anchor, the base body can have a tool holder for a turning tool. The tool holder can be designed, for example, as a hexagon socket or a Phillips head. A corresponding tool, for example a bit from a cordless screwdriver, can be inserted into the tool holder to rotate the drywall anchor about its longitudinal axis during self-drilling insertion. In particular, the drywall anchor also has a flange at its rear end, which is in particular connected in one piece to the base body and which in particular extends over the entire circumference of the base body. The flange is used to attach to the visible side of the plasterboard and prevents the drywall anchor from being screwed too deeply into the plasterboard. After correct installation, the flange is flush with the visible side or rests on it. In addition, the flange can transfer compressive forces to the plasterboard that are introduced into the drywall anchor by an attachment that can rest on the flange. In particular, a screw channel is arranged in the base body which extends from the tool holder to the front end of the base body. The screw channel runs in particular axially and concentrically to the longitudinal axis and can penetrate the base body completely, up to the front end. The screw channel serves to accommodate a screw with which an attachment, for example a hook, can be attached to the drywall anchor and thus to the plasterboard in a known manner. In addition, if the screw channel is open at the front end, it can accommodate a tool that forms the drilling element or a part of it, as is already known from the prior art described at the beginning.

[0012] If the drywall anchor includes an external thread, this is particularly axially and rotationally fixedly connected to a circumferential surface of the base body, particularly in one piece, and extends helically around the longitudinal axis of the drywall anchor. In particular, the base body, the external thread, and, if present, the flange, are manufactured in one piece from plastic using an injection-molded process. The external thread is designed such that it automatically cuts into the plasterboard when the drywall anchor is screwed into the drilled hole. For this purpose, the external thread has, in particular, a maximum thread height corresponding to 0.15 to 0.75 times, preferably 0.2 to 0.5 times, the outer diameter of the base body at the rear end of the external thread.

[0013] The drilling element is arranged at the front end of the base body. In particular, the drilling element is integrally connected to the base body. In particular, the drilling element is made of plastic and injection-molded together and integrally with the base body, which enables simple and cost-effective production of the drywall anchor according to the invention. However, the drilling element can also be axially and rotationally connected to the base body by overmolding or inserted through the base body as a separate tool, as is known from the prior art.

[0014] The drilling element comprises a drilling tip and a cutting element with a drilling cutting edge. The drilling tip forms in particular the front end of the drywall anchor. The drilling cutting edge runs from radially inward to radially outward with respect to the longitudinal axis, in particular starting from the drilling tip, in particular up to a radially outer edge of the cutting element. Preferably, the drilling cutting edge merges into the drilling tip at its front end, which facilitates positioning of the drilling cutting edge on the plasterboard and precise drilling into the plasterboard. The drilling cutting edge can be curved and does not have to intersect the longitudinal axis. In particular, the drilling cutting edge runs straight and in particular radial to the longitudinal axis, in particular in an axial plane to the longitudinal axis and inclined to a radial plane of the longitudinal axis. The cutting element is in particular plate-shaped, i.e., flat, with the drilling cutting edge arranged at the front of the cutting element. The drilling cutting edge preferably has two cutting sections, each extending from radially inside to radially outside relative to the longitudinal axis. In particular, the two cutting sections are located opposite each other relative to the longitudinal axis. In particular, they are located together in an axial plane. In particular, the two cutting sections are arranged mirror-symmetrically to the longitudinal axis on the cutting element. In particular, the cutting element comprises exactly one drilling cutting edge with exactly two cutting sections.

[0015] According to the invention, the drilling element comprises a hollow, in particular pot-shaped and forwardly open, in particular hollow-cylindrical drill bit, within which the cutting element is arranged. The peripheral wall of the drill bit is closed in its lateral surface. This means that it has no through-openings that radially penetrate the lateral surface, in particular no window-like openings. In particular, the lateral surface of the drill bit is designed over at least half of its longitudinal extent as a hollow cylinder with a closed lateral surface without through-openings in the radial direction.

[0016] The cutting edge of the cutting element projects forward beyond the front end of the core bit so that it can be applied to the outside of a plasterboard in front of the core bit. The core bit therefore does not hinder precise application. This arrangement also ensures that material that is removed during the self-drilling insertion of the drywall anchor into a plasterboard, in particular drilling dust, is absorbed by the core bit, thus preventing the material from escaping into the environment. Preferably, the cutting element is triangular in the area of the cutting edge in an axial plane to the longitudinal axis. In particular, the part of the cutting element that projects beyond the core bit forms a triangle in an axial plane. In this case, the drill tip forms the front end or the front corner of the triangular area of the cutting element. This design of the cutting element, in combination with the hollow cylindrical core bit, has proven particularly advantageous when drilling a hole in a plasterboard.

[0017] Furthermore, it is preferred that the two cutting sections of the drill bit are inclined relative to the longitudinal axis such that, in an axial plane relative to the longitudinal axis, they jointly enclose a tip angle of 30 degrees to 120 degrees. In particular, the tip angle is between 45 degrees and 90 degrees, allowing the drill bit to easily penetrate plasterboard while still being stable. In particular, each of the cutting sections is equally inclined relative to the longitudinal axis.

[0018] In a preferred embodiment of the drywall anchor according to the invention, the cutting edge has an outer diameter that is smaller than the outer diameter of the drill bit. In particular, the cutting element ends at an inner wall of the hollow-cylindrical drill bit, wherein the cutting edge is preferably connected to the inner wall of the hollow-cylindrical drill bit, in particular integrally. The cutting edge can protrude forward beyond the drill bit in the region of the inner wall of the hollow-cylindrical drill bit. In particular, however, it ends at the inner wall at the level of a front end of the drill bit, or the drill bit protrudes forward beyond the rear end of the cutting edge, which improves the transport of the removed material into the hollow-cylindrical drill bit.

[0019] In a further preferred embodiment of the drywall anchor according to the invention, the cutting element forms a wall that divides the interior of the hollow cylindrical core bit into two chambers. This embodiment has the advantage that the cutting element, which is integrally connected to the inner wall of the core bit on both sides, is stabilized by this connection, which improves the robustness of the drywall anchor according to the invention during drilling. This embodiment does not hinder the transport of the removed material into the interior of the core bit.

[0020] Furthermore, it is preferred that the interior of the drill bit be sealed off from the base body. This prevents the removed material from passing through the base body to the outside, to the user, or into an area, such as a living area, from which the drywall anchor is inserted into the plasterboard.

[0021] The drill bit has a cylindrical outer surface and / or a conical outer surface. The outer surface can consist of a single cylindrical or conical section or be composed of several sections, for example, a cylindrical and a conical section. "Conical" here refers in particular to a truncated cone-shaped outer surface. However, the term "conical" is also intended to include truncated pyramids and generally curved surfaces whose cross-sectional area decreases toward the front along the longitudinal axis. However, a truncated conical outer surface inclined between 2 degrees and 10 degrees to the longitudinal axis is preferred.

[0022] The core bit preferably has at least one milling element on its outer surface, which widens the borehole by cutting and / or milling during drilling. In particular, at least two groove-like pockets are designed as milling elements. The pockets extend, in particular, from the axial front to the axial rear, in particular over the entire length of the core bit. They improve the cutting performance of the core bit and also serve to absorb removed material if it is not transported inward, into the interior of the core bit.

[0023] The core bit itself is preferably designed as a hole saw, i.e. as a saw blade running around the longitudinal axis and having at least two saw teeth. The saw teeth are arranged in particular rotationally symmetrical to the longitudinal axis, in particular four to eight, and in particular six. The front ends of the saw teeth form the front end of the core bit. To ensure that material removed by the saw teeth when drilling the hole in the plasterboard reaches the interior of the core bit, the front ends of the saw teeth, which form the cutting surfaces of the saw teeth, are inclined inwards. This means that the cutting surfaces of the saw teeth run from the outside at the front to the inside at the back.

[0024] In particular, the base body is slotted, i.e. it has at least one slot that completely penetrates the base body radially. In particular, the slot runs transversely to the longitudinal axis in a front section of the slot. In particular, the slot runs straight in a rear region of the slot, in particular parallel to the longitudinal axis, and in a front region transversely to the longitudinal axis, which enables good expansion behavior when screwing a screw into the screw channel. The slot forms two expansion bodies on the base body, which are connected to one another in particular by a predetermined separation point, in particular at the front end of the slot. The slot does not run the entire length of the base body and in particular not to its front end, so that removed material that has been picked up by the drill bit cannot get into the slot and out of the slot.

[0025] In the method according to the invention for installing the drywall anchor according to the invention, a fastening assembly is produced which comprises the drywall anchor and a plasterboard. When screwing the drywall anchor according to the invention into the plasterboard, a hole or part of a hole is first drilled into the plasterboard using the cutting element of the drilling element, and the hole is then recut using the core bit of the drilling element, in particular with cutting teeth. Removed material which accrues during drilling and recutting of the hole is preferably collected in an interior space of the core bit, at least parts of the material, which thus cannot escape to the outside, into an area from which a user inserts the drywall anchor according to the invention into the plasterboard. At the beginning of installation, the drill bit, and in particular a front part of the cutting element, can be pressed into the plasterboard. This keeps the distance between the drill bit and the plasterboard as small as possible. Material removed during drilling can therefore only escape during the short period of time until the drill bit is in contact with the plasterboard. It is therefore preferable for the drilling element to be designed so that it can be pressed as far as possible into the plasterboard, ideally so far that the drill bit is already in contact with the plasterboard at the beginning of the drilling process.

[0026] The features and combinations of features, embodiments, and refinements of the invention mentioned above in the description, as well as the features and combinations of features mentioned below in the description of the figures and / or drawn in a figure, can be used not only in the respective specified or drawn combination, but also in any other combinations or individually. Embodiments of the invention are possible that do not have all the features of a dependent claim. Individual features of a claim can also be replaced by other disclosed features or combinations of features. Embodiments of the invention that do not have all the features of the exemplary embodiment are possible.

[0027] The invention is explained in more detail below with reference to two exemplary embodiments illustrated in the drawings. They show:

[0029] Figure 2 shows the first drywall anchor according to the invention in a side view;

[0030] Figure 3 shows the first drywall anchor according to the invention, rotated about the longitudinal axis compared to Figure 3, in a side view;

[0032] Figure 5 shows the drilling element of the first drywall anchor according to the invention in a second perspective view rotated relative to Figure 4; and

[0033] Figure 6 shows a second drywall anchor according to the invention in a side view.

[0034] In the figures, identical parts are provided with identical reference numbers.

[0035] Figures 1 to 5 show a drywall anchor 1 according to the invention for self-drilling screwing into a plasterboard (not shown). The drywall anchor 1 according to the invention comprises a base body 2, an external thread 3, and a drilling element 4.

[0036] The drywall anchor 1 extends from a rear end to a front end along a longitudinal axis 5, which is also the longitudinal axis 5 of the base body 2 and the drilling element 4. At its rear end, the base body 2 has a tool holder 6 for a rotary tool (not shown), for example a holder for a Phillips bit. A screw channel adjoins the tool holder 6 inside the base body 2 in the direction of the longitudinal axis 5 towards the front of the drilling element 4. In the exemplary embodiment, this screw channel does not completely penetrate the base body 2 in its length, but ends with a slot 7 penetrating the base body 2 radially to the longitudinal axis 5 at a distance in front of the front end of the base body 2. A screw (not shown) can be screwed into the screw channel to attach an attachment such as a hook (not shown). The base body 2 has a non-circular, prismatic cross-section essentially over its entire length. The basic shape of the base body 2 is a prism with six flat side surfaces. At the rear end of the base body 2 there is a circumferential flange 8 which has six straight sides on its circumference and several parallel anti-rotation ribs 9 on its front side. After a planned installation of the drywall anchor 1 according to the invention in a plasterboard, the underside of the flange 8 rests on a visible side of the plasterboard and serves as a support surface for the attachment. To prevent the drywall anchor 1 from rotating with the screw and being unintentionally unscrewed from the drill hole when the attachment is dismantled and the screw is unscrewed from the screw channel, the anti-rotation ribs 9 cut into the visible side of the plasterboard when the attachment is dismantled.

[0037] The external thread 3 is integrally connected to the circumferential surface of the base body 2. It extends helically around the longitudinal axis 5 and is designed as a type of pointed thread for cutting into the plasterboard. The external thread 3 has a maximum thread height corresponding to approximately 0.4 times the outer diameter of the base body 2 at the rear end of the external thread 3.

[0038] The drilling element 4 is connected to the front end of the base body 2. The drilling element 4 comprises a drill bit 10, a cutting element 11, and a hollow, pot-shaped, and forwardly open, here hollow-cylindrical drill bit 12, within which the cutting element 11 is arranged.

[0039] The drill bit 10 forms the front end of the drywall anchor 1. It is designed as a cone 13 that merges into a cylinder 14 of the cutting element 11. Cone 13 and cylinder 14 run concentrically to the longitudinal axis 5. The drill bit 10 is integral with the cutting element 11. At its front end, the cutting element 11 has a cutting edge 15 with a first cutting section 16 and a second cutting section 17. The two cutting sections 16, 17 run from radially inside to radially outside and from front to back with respect to the longitudinal axis 5 and starting from the drill bit 10, i.e. they are inclined forwards relative to the longitudinal axis 5. The front ends of the two cutting sections 16, 17 merge into the drill bit 10. The outer, rear ends of the two cutting sections 16, 17 merge integrally into an inner wall 18 of the hollow cylindrical drill bit 12, so that the drilling cutting edge 15 is connected to the inner wall 18.The cutting edge 15 protrudes forward beyond the front end of the drill bit 12. As can be seen in Figure 2, the projecting part of the cutting edge 15 forms a triangular surface in an axial plane to the longitudinal axis 5, in the exemplary embodiment in the shape of an isosceles triangle. The two cutting sections 16, 17 form the same sides of the triangle, which meet at the drill tip 10, which forms the front corner of the triangle. The two cutting sections 16, 17 are inclined to the longitudinal axis 5 and are symmetrical thereto. Together they enclose a tip angle 19 of the cutting element 11, which in the exemplary embodiment is 80 degrees. The length of the base side of the triangle corresponds to an outer diameter of the cutting edge 15, which is thus smaller than the outer diameter of the drill bit 12.

[0040] The core bit 12 itself is designed as a hole saw with an annular saw blade 20 having six saw teeth 21, the wall of which is cylindrical and closed in its outer surface. The front ends of the saw teeth 21 form the front end of the core bit 12. Each saw tooth 21 has a cutting surface 22 that is inclined inwards to guide material such as drilling dust, which is removed during drilling, into an interior space 23 of the hollow cylindrical core bit 12. This interior space 23 of the core bit 12 is closed off from the base body 2, so that material that is removed by the cutting element 11 and / or the saw teeth 21 of the core bit 12 when drilling a hole in a plasterboard is received in the interior space 23 of the core bit 12 without this material being able to escape backwards into the slot 7 and out of the drywall anchor 1 via the tool holder 6.The protruding triangle of the cutting element 11 merges into a wall 24 of the cutting element 11 in the interior 23 of the core bit 12, which divides the interior 23 of the core bit 12 into two chambers. On its cylindrical outer surface, the core bit 12 has six groove-like pockets 25 with a V-shaped cross-section, which narrow towards the rear in the circumferential direction and begin at their front ends between two saw teeth 21. These groove-like pockets 25 are milling elements and improve the cutting behavior of the core bit 12. Furthermore, the pockets 25 can accommodate removed material and transport it into the borehole.

[0041] To install the drywall anchor 1 according to the invention to produce a fastening arrangement comprising the drywall anchor 1 and a plasterboard (not shown), the drywall anchor 1 according to the invention is placed with the tool holder 6 onto a bit of a rotary tool, for example, a cordless screwdriver (not shown), and pressed with the drill bit 10 against a visible side of the plasterboard. If the drywall anchor 1 according to the invention is then rotated, the two cutting sections 16, 17 of the cutting element 11 first cut open the cardboard on the visible side of the plasterboard and then mill the plaster of the plasterboard until the saw teeth 21 of the hollow cylindrical drill bit 12 cut into the plaster. The drill bit 12 of the drilling element

[0042] 4 thus recuts the hole that is drilled into the plasterboard with the cutting element 11 of the drilling element 4. The material removed during drilling and recutting, for example, drilling dust, is at least partially guided by the inwardly inclined cutting surfaces 22 of the saw teeth 21 into the interior 23 of the drill bit 12. By absorbing the removed material in the interior 23 of the hollow cylindrical drill bit 12, only a small amount of material can escape from the drill hole on the visible side and contaminate the surrounding area.

[0043] After the planned installation of the drywall anchor 1 according to the invention in the plasterboard, a component (not shown) can now be attached to the drywall anchor 1 using a screw (not shown). For this purpose, the screw is screwed into the screw channel. In doing so, the screw reaches the area of the screw channel in which the slot 7 is also located. The slot 7 runs parallel to the longitudinal axis 5 in a rear section, but transversely to it in a front section and ends in front of a predetermined breaking point 26 formed in the front section of the base body 2. If the screw, which is screwed into the screw channel in the direction of the longitudinal axis 5, hits the transverse part of the slot 7, the two parts of the base body 2, which are divided by the slot 7, are radially separated to the longitudinal axis

[0044] 5 are pressed apart, breaking the predetermined breaking point 26. These two parts form a first expansion body and a second expansion body, which are pressed against the drilled hole wall by the expansion and / or engage behind the back of the plasterboard, thereby improving the fit and hold of the drywall anchor 1 in the drilled hole. In the area of the slot 7, the external thread 3 is interrupted so that the external thread 3 does not hinder the expansion.

[0045] The drywall anchor 1 according to the invention can be easily installed in a plasterboard, whereby due to the inventive design of the drywall anchor 1 only a small amount of removed material, such as drilling dust, penetrates outwards from the drill hole.

[0046] The drywall anchor 1 according to the invention is manufactured in one piece from a plastic material, for example, a polyamide, using an injection molding process. Thus, the drilling element 4, the flange 8, and the external thread 3 are each integrally connected to the base body 2. It is also possible, in principle, to manufacture the drilling element 4 or parts thereof, such as the cutting element 11, from a different material and / or a different plastic. For example, the cutting element 11 can be manufactured from a hard, fiber-reinforced polyamide instead of unreinforced polyamide, and the entire drywall anchor 1 according to the invention can be injection-molded using a two-component injection molding process.

[0047] The second drywall anchor 1 according to the invention, shown in Figure 6, differs from the first exemplary embodiment essentially in the design of the drilling element 4, the two cutting sections 16, 17 of which enclose a point angle 19 of approximately 60 degrees. This drywall anchor 1 according to the invention can therefore be pressed into the plasterboard by the user before drilling, thus reducing the gap between the drill bit 12 and the plasterboard, through which removed material can escape. In addition, the outer surface of the drill bit 12 is not cylindrical in shape, but conical, here in the shape of the surface of a truncated cone. In the exemplary embodiment, the truncated cone is rotationally symmetrical to the longitudinal axis 5 and its outer surface is inclined by approximately 5 degrees to the longitudinal axis 5, i.e., it has a cone angle of approximately 10 degrees. Thus, the core bit 12 has a smaller cross-section at its front end compared to the first embodiment, so that less material is removed from the plasterboard when drilling with the core bit 12. The subsequent widening of the drill hole is then carried out by means of the pockets 25 of the core bit 12, which act as milling elements. The amount of removed material that protrudes outward from the drill hole during installation of the second drywall anchor 1 according to the invention is further reduced by this design compared to the anchor of the first embodiment.
