Abstract
Description
[0001] Description
[0002] Title: Multiphasic cosmetic composition
[0003] SUBJECT OF THE INVENTION
[0004] The present invention relates to a multi-phase cosmetic composition containing two aqueous phases and optionally one or two oily phases, the aqueous phases comprising a mixture of polyol(s) and electrolytes. It also relates to the cosmetic use of this composition for the care, cleansing and / or perfuming of the skin and / or hair and / or removing make-up from the skin, in particular the face, as well as a cosmetic process using this composition.
[0005] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0006] There are biphasic cosmetic compositions on the market that allow incompatible active ingredients to be transported in separate phases. These phases appear superimposed on each other when the composition is at rest and form an extemporaneous emulsion when stirred, returning to their initial appearance after a few seconds or minutes.
[0007] The challenge faced by formulators of this type of composition is to provide a formulation that forms an emulsion that is sufficiently stable, after stirring, to allow simultaneous application of the two phases, but such that upon standing, the two phases quickly separate to return to their initial state.
[0008] In two-phase compositions, the lower phase most often consists of an aqueous phase, while the upper phase is an oil phase.
[0009] However, some two-phase compositions containing two aqueous phases or "aqueous two-phases" have been described. In these compositions, since the surface tension between the two aqueous phases is much lower than between the aqueous and oily phases of a conventional two-phase system, the phase separation time after the end of stirring is generally longer than in water / oil two-phase systems.
[0010] In this context, document US-6,429,177 describes an aqueous two-phase comprising a combination of polyethylene glycol or PEG (having a molecular mass of 200 to 6000 Da), surfactant, thickener and electrolyte (sulfate, bisulfate or carbonate salts), where the constituents are distributed in different proportions between the two phases. The thickener is itself a PEG derivative exhibiting surfactant properties. It was subsequently proposed to replace this thickener with poly dextrose which makes it possible to lower the quantity of salts (WO2004 / 018601), a polysaccharide or a fatty ester or ether ethoxylate (WO2006 / 696612). The presence of electrolytes in both phases of the composition does not allow them to be isolated from certain active ingredients sensitive to electrolytes, such as alpha-hydroxy acids, which therefore cannot be transported in these aqueous biphasic systems.
[0011] Other aqueous biphasic compositions have been described for oral application in WO2019 / 027468, US-10,912,731 and WO2018 / 089322. These compositions all contain an acid polymer, a poly(ethylene glycol) or a poly(propylene glycol) and an agent facilitating phase separation, which may be chosen from polyphosphates, lysine or sodium chloride.
[0012] The solutions proposed in the prior art all necessarily use a significant quantity (at least 5%) of surfactants or gelling agents of synthetic origin. However, consumers are increasingly seeking cosmetic products containing ingredients of natural origin and as few additives as possible, in particular surfactants known for their irritating power. In addition, the transparency of these products leaves something to be desired, insofar as their oily phases contain lipophilic or amphiphilic compounds. To the Applicant's knowledge, there are no aqueous biphasic products on the market.
[0013] It therefore remains desirable to be able to propose an aqueous biphase which does not entail the formulation restrictions of the prior art, while having a suitable phase separation speed and clear interfaces at rest. After much research, the Applicant has succeeded in achieving this objective thanks to a judicious choice of the constituents of the two phases. It has thus been able to obtain an aqueous biphase, and other multiphasic compositions obtained from it, which can be free of surfactant, and therefore suitable for sensitive skin, and which are likely to contain a significant quantity of active ingredients thanks to a minimal or even zero quantity of additives such as gelling agents. In addition, these compositions can be sprayed, which is not the case for aqueous biphases rich in gelling agents. The Applicant has further demonstrated that the aqueous biphase thus obtained could be used in the preparation of a triphasic or quadriphasic composition respectively containing one or two oily phases superimposed on the aqueous biphase and capable of transporting lipophilic compounds.
[0014] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0015] The invention thus relates to a multiphase cosmetic composition comprising: (a) a first aqueous phase containing water and a combination of electrolytes, and (b) a second aqueous phase containing water and at least one polyol chosen from monomeric diols, polymeric polyols and their mixtures, characterized in that the combination of electrolytes comprises: (i) at least one inorganic phosphate salt, (ii) at least one organic salt formed from an organic anion and an inorganic cation and (iii) at least one alkali metal halide salt, each of the phases being separated from the adjacent phase by a single linear continuous interface.
[0016] It also relates to the cosmetic use of this composition for the care, cleaning and / or perfuming of the skin and / or hair and / or removing make-up from the skin.
[0017] It also relates to a cosmetic process for caring for, cleaning and / or perfuming the skin and / or hair, and / or removing make-up from the skin, comprising the topical application to the skin of this composition, preferably by spraying.
[0018] DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0019] As a preliminary point, it should be noted that the expression "between" used throughout this description includes the values corresponding to the lower and upper limits of the interval concerned.
[0020] The present invention relates to a multiphasic composition. Multiphasic compositions are distinguished from emulsions or dispersions which, at rest, consist of a multitude of droplets, generally not visible to the naked eye, dispersed in a continuous phase. Indeed, in the case of multiphasic compositions, each of the phases is separated from the adjacent phase by a single continuous interface, which is generally linear. This interface can be highlighted by the use of distinct dyes in each of the phases. In other words, the different phases of a multiphasic composition are stacked on top of each other, that is to say form a stratified structure. The composition according to the invention comprises precisely at least two distinct aqueous phases which will now be described in more detail.
[0021] First
[0022] The first aqueous phase contains water and a combination of electrolytes which comprises: (i) at least one inorganic phosphate salt, (ii) at least one organic salt formed from an organic anion and an inorganic cation and (iii) at least one alkali metal halide salt.
[0023] The inorganic phosphate salt (i) may in particular be chosen from mono-, di- and tribasic potassium phosphates, mono-, di- and tribasic sodium phosphates and mixtures thereof, preferably the inorganic phosphate salt is dibasic potassium phosphate.
[0024] For its part, the organic salt (ii) is preferably formed from an anion derived from at least one hydroxy acid, such as a citrate, a tartrate, a gluconate or a lactate, preferably a citrate, and from at least one inorganic cation, preferably chosen from mono- or divalent inorganic cations, more preferably cations derived from alkali or alkaline-earth metals or zinc, more preferably still from alkali metals. Better still, the organic salt is a mixture of potassium citrate and sodium citrate, in particular trisodium and tripotassium citrate.
[0025] The alkali metal (iii) halide salt is advantageously an alkali metal chloride, such as sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and mixtures thereof. Alternatively, it may be an alkali metal bromide or iodide.
[0026] Second
[0027] For its part, the second aqueous phase contains water and at least one polyol chosen from monomeric diols and polymeric polyols. The monomeric diols may be chosen in particular from linear monomeric diols containing from 3 to 7 carbon atoms, such as propylene glycol, propanediol, butylene glycol, pentylene glycol, hexylene glycol, heptylene glycol, and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the polyol is pentylene glycol. The polymeric polyols may be chosen in particular from: diglycerin, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol; polysaccharides, such as hydroxyethylcellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, carrageenan, sodium alginate, dextran; and mixtures thereof.
[0028] It is also possible to include, in the composition according to the invention, at least one monomeric diol and at least one polymeric polyol.
[0029] According to the invention, it is preferred to use monomeric diols.
[0030] In one embodiment of the invention, the multiphasic composition according to the invention is a two-phase composition and it does not contain any other phase superimposed on the two aqueous phases described above. [0032] For the purposes of this description, "non-polar oil" means an oil having a polarity index, i.e. an interfacial tension between this oil and water, at 23°C, which is greater than 35 mN / m.
[0033] For the purposes of this description, the term "polar oil" means an oil having a polarity index, i.e. an interfacial tension between this oil and water, at 23°C, which is less than or equal to 35 mN / m.
[0034] In addition to the aforementioned constituents, the aqueous biphase may comprise from 0.1 to 10% by weight of alcohol and preferably from 0.1 to 10% by weight of ethanol, in particular when it is intended to be used as a perfume. In addition, the aqueous biphase contains water, generally in an amount of 40 to 70% by weight, relative to the total weight of the two aqueous phases.
[0035] The aqueous biphase may comprise from 0.1 to 80% by weight, preferably from 1 to 60% by weight and more preferably from 5 to 40% by weight of polyol, and / or from 0.1 to 35% by weight of electrolytes, relative to the total weight of the biphasic composition.
[0036] In another embodiment, the composition according to the invention contains at least one apolar oil or at least one polar oil and constitutes a three-phase water / water / oil composition.
[0037] In this embodiment, in addition to a polar or apolar oily phase, the three-phase composition according to the invention will comprise the two aqueous phases described above, except that they will generally not contain alcohol. The polar or apolar oil may represent from 5 to 50% by weight and preferably from 5 to 30% by weight of this three-phase composition, which also generally contains from 20 to 60% by weight of water, relative to the total weight of the composition.
[0038] Examples of non-polar oils are linear or branched C5-C20 alkanes; silicone oils; dialkyl ethers such as dicaprylyl ether; dialkyl carbonates such as dicaprylyl carbonate; hydrocarbons such as squalane and squalene; polyolefins such as hydrogenated polyisobutene and polydecene; mineral oils; esters of C12-C44 acids such as hexyl laurate; and mixtures thereof. Preferably the non-polar oil comprises at least one linear or branched C5-C20 alkane.
[0039] The linear or branched C5-C20 alkanes preferably consist of at least one linear or branched C10-C20 alkane, such as decane, undecane, dodecane, isododecane, tridecane, tetradecane, pentadecane, hexadecane, isohexadecane, heptadecane, octadecane, nonadecane, eicosane and mixtures thereof. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the polar oily phase also contains at least one other vegetable oil, in a weight ratio of castor oil to vegetable oil of at least 65:35. It has in fact been observed that a vegetable oil, used in the aforementioned proportions, makes it possible to improve the feel of the composition without harming the production of a multiphasic composition. The weight ratio of castor oil to vegetable oil is advantageously at least 70:30, preferably between 70:30 and 90:10.
[0041] Vegetable oils can be obtained by mechanical pressing, often cold, of fruits, nuts or plant seeds. They are composed of approximately 95% triglycerides, the remainder being mono- and diglycerides and so-called unsaponifiable compounds such as alcohols, carotenoids, chlorophyll, hydrocarbons, sterols and tocopherols. Triglycerides themselves can be simple (triesters of glycerol and three molecules of the same fatty acid) or mixed (triesters of glycerol and two or three different fatty acids), with mixed esters being the majority. The fatty acids contained in vegetable oils are saturated and / or unsaturated and their chain length is between 4 and 22 carbon atoms and mostly between 12 and 18 carbon atoms.

This composition comprises, in addition to the aqueous two-phase described above, a polar oily phase (intermediate phase) as described above and an apolar oily phase (upper phase). It generally does not contain ethanol. The apolar oil may represent from 5 to 40% by weight of this four-phase composition. The polar oil may represent from 5 to 50% by weight of the four-phase composition.

[0053] EXAMPLES
[0054] The invention will be better understood in light of the following examples, which are given purely for illustrative purposes and are not intended to limit the scope of the invention, defined by the appended claims.
[0055] Example 1: Multiphasic compositions
[0056] The ingredients mentioned below were mixed in the weight proportions also indicated below, to prepare different compositions according to the invention.
[0057] 1A- Biphasic compositions
[0058] The salts were first heated to 50-60°C to accelerate their dissolution. After cooling, they were added to water at room temperature (20-25°C), followed by the other components.
[0059] [Table 2]
[0060] Glycolic acid can be added to this formula to make an exfoliating lotion.
[0061] [Table 3]
[0062] A perfume can be added to this composition to obtain a perfume composition. [Table 4]
[0063] Niacinamide can be added to this formula to make a lightening lotion.
[0064] IB- Triphasic Compositions:
[0065] [Table 5]
[0066] Aqueous active ingredients can be added for use as a cosmetic treatment. Aqueous and oily gelling agents can be added to vary the sensoriality of the formula.
[0067] [Table 6]
[0068] Oily active ingredients such as extracts or essential oils can be added for use as cosmetic treatments. Water-based and oil-based gelling agents can be added to vary the sensory experience of the formula.
[0069] IC- Quadriphasic compositions
[0070] The salts were first heated to 50-60°C to accelerate their dissolution. After cooling, the other constituents of the aqueous phases were added at room temperature (20-25°C) to obtain an aqueous biphase. The two oil phases were then added in any order.
[0071] [Table 7]
[0072] The addition of oily and aqueous extracts of immortelle to this formula provides anti-aging care.
[0073] The above different compositions appear as multiphase compositions at rest, in which the interfaces are very clear.
[0074] The stability of the compositions described in Tables 2 to 4 above was evaluated under different accelerated aging conditions, namely for 3 months at 4°C, 40°C and 47°C. In addition, a light resistance test (Suntest) was carried out by carrying out cycles from -20°C to +25°C alternating every 12 hours for one week. No modification of the compositions, in particular deposition or alteration of their interfaces at rest, was observed.
[0075] Example 2: Comparative tests
[0076] Different mixtures of electrolytes and polyol (pentylene glycol) were prepared, varying the nature and quantity of the electrolytes, and the total quantity of electrolyte allowing, in each case, a phase shift of the mixture into an aqueous biphase was noted. The results of these tests are collated in Table 8 below.
[0077] [Table 8]
[0078] As is evident from these tests, the combination of two electrolytes does not necessarily produce a synergistic effect; it seems that the less effective electrolyte determines the quantity of electrolytes useful for causing a phase shift (Ex. 5-6 vs. Ex. 1-3). Furthermore, component (ii) is necessarily an organic salt (Ex. 8 vs. Ex. 9).
[0079] Component (iii) acts as a catalyst, in that it lowers the total electrolyte content required to phase-shift the system (Ex. 8 vs. Ex. 5-7). However, it does not, on its own, produce a two-phase system (Ex. 4).
