Abstract
Description
INFANT CAR SEAT SYSTEM AND ASSEMBLY byJASON A. LOWETECHNICAL FIELD
[0001] This invention relates to infant car seats in a vehicle, and to infant car seat systems and apparatus to monitor the status of i) an infant seated in an infant car seat installed in a vehicle, and ii) the infant car seat installed in a vehicle.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Numerous products on the market are provided for increasing the comfort and / or utility of an infant car seats, including monitoring the infant car seat environment, and providing one or more sensors to detect the status of an infant in an installed car seat.
[0003] Other products provide a vehicle infant car seat alert system providing a seat sensor and an alarm fob or providing an alert when an infant is in an infant car seat in a vehicle. Most new parents, however, struggle to adequately fit their infant’s car seat in a vehicle. Reports by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration consistently find a majority of infant car seats are not properly fitted to the infant’s size or stage of development or installed incorrectly. A significant aspect of these studies found many car seat positions or vehicular installations are not appropriate for the infant. Safety of the seated infant is jeopardized due to these infant car seat vehicular fitting and / or installation errors.DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION
[0004] Existing products are limited because they provide no indication whether 1) the infant seat is safely installed, 2) the infant seat is appropriate for the size or stage of development of the infant, or 3) the infant seat is in an extreme temperatureenvironment. There is thus a need for an integrated system and assembly to monitor an infant car seat and to provide a real time system to monitor the infant and detect if the infant car seat is installed correctly, if the infant is properly fitted in the infant car seat, and / or if the infant car seat is appropriate for the size of the infant via a variety of sensors. These infant car seat systems alert parents, either via a light indicator on the infant car seat or via Bluetooth communications to a separate, credentialed handheld digital device and highlight the nature of the infant car seat issue or incorrect fitting and provide tutorials on how to correct the same.
[0005] An objective of the Chill Baby™ Technologies (CBT) integrated system and assembly 110 to monitor an infant car seat is to detect the presence of an infant in the car seat, to accurately determine and to verify the infant’s weight and height, and to provide real time monitoring of the infant car seat environment.
[0006] Further objectives of the CBT integrated system and assembly 110 to monitor an infant car seat infant car is to provide visual warnings on the infant car seat and / or sound an alarm and / or provide an alarm to at least one external digital and / or one external microprocessor-based system when safe vehicle interior temperature set points are exceeded, any seat belt connection anomaly is present in the infant car seat, the infant car seat orientation is not appropriate for the size / age of the infant, the infant car seat restraint components are not set up consistent with the infant’s size / age, or the infant is left in the infant car seat when the parent or guardian has left the vehicle.
[0010] Embodiments of the disclosed CBT integrated system and assembly 110 to monitor an infant car seat include a temperature / humidity monitor, a plurality of isofix pressure hall effect sensors, a plurality of external limit switch seat belt sensors, either a load cell or a hinged limit switch force sensing pressure sensor, a standingleg limit switch sensor, spring loaded limit switch seat orientation sensors, a top tether limit switch sensor, a main control device with Bluetooth connectivity to at least one external digital device, and a plurality of light emitting diode (LED) panels to display to confirm proper system use or if any installation or operational issues are detected. The main control device provides a battery, microprocessor control board, a USB port for charging, input ports for wired sensor input, and monitoring controls.
[0011] Embodiments of the disclosed CBT integrated system and assembly 110 to monitor an infant car seat include digital application software and related firmware to let a separate, credentialed handheld digital device communicate via Bluetooth connectivity with the main control device of a CBT infant car seat whether the car seat is properly installed, whether the restraint belts are adequately fastened, whether dangerous temperature / humidity levels exist for the infant car seat environment, whether the infant car seat is appropriate for the infant’s age / size, the height and weight of the infant seated in the infant car seat, and whether the adult / guardian for the infant has vacated the vehicle with the infant still in the infant car seat and the vehicle.
[0012] Embodiments of the disclosed CBT integrated system and assembly 110 to monitor an infant car seat provide a device that wakes up when a child is placed into the infant car seat and the device detects the child’s weight and height. The child’s weight is detected by load cells in the base of the infant car seat and the child’s height is detected by several sensors including the angle of the infant car seat harness to ensure it is level with the child’s shoulders and the height of the infant car seat head rest. Based on these two variables, CBT integrated system and assembly 110 applies an algorithm to determine the child’s overall height. Once the child’s height and weight are established, the system checks the child infant car seatposition with respect the rear facing position or the front facing position, and whether the infant car seat position is correct for the child’s height or weight. CBT integrated system and assembly 110. The integrated system and assembly 110 then monitors the infant car seat installation contact points such as standing leg, top tether, ISO fix, use of the infant car seat harness and whether each of these multiple variables are correct for the child’s height or weight. Any errors are then displayed to a separate, credentialed handheld digital device and on the vehicle console by the system’s application so the parent can resolve the issue. As the child grows different configurations of the infant car seat will apply and the CBT integrated system and assembly 110 application provides the parent with real time input to ensure continued safety of the child in the infant car seat.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DRAWINGS

[0070] An embodiment of the CBT infant car seat assembly 110, and an embodiment of a system of use of the CBT infant car seat assembly 110, is designed to provide a continuous monitoring loop to determine whether the infant is in the car seat assembly after the system is powered on. If no infant in in the seat, then the system goes into sleep mode, periodically waking up and checking for the presence of an infant in the seat. This continuous monitoring loop cycles every second, FIGS. 24 and 30.
[0071] An embodiment of the CBT infant car seat assembly 110, and an embodiment of a system of use of the CBT infant car seat assembly 110, is designed to provide a second function loop checking sensor data and communicating sensor date to the user via the LED strip, depending on pre-set parameters which determines the infant car seat mode, / .e., rear facing, front facing or booster mode. This second function loop cycles every second to check sensor data, compare the sensor data pre-set parameters for the different infant car seat modes, and output the data sensor data to the LED strips, i.e. green if sensor data matches a pre-set, or red if there is adiscrepancy between the mode pre-set parameters and the live sensory data. Check mode also checks the infant is in the seat every cycle, so the cycle can reset to check for the presence of the infant in the infant car seat assembly seat, FIGS. 24 and 30.
[0072] An embodiment of the CBT infant car seat assembly 110, and an embodiment of a system of use of the CBT infant car seat assembly 110, is designed to provide a third function loop if the at least one credentialled, handheld digital device 500 (sometimes a credentialed digital device 500 is a cell phone or digital pad) is connected to the infant car seat assembly / system. If this connection is confirmed, the infant car seat system checks the user’s at least one credentialled, handheld digital device 500 to determine if the firmware update is current, as this is information collected from the application running on the at least one credentialled, handheld digital device 500. If there is a more current firmware update available to the application, the system downloads the more current firmware update, installs the more current firmware update, and resets the at least one credentialled, handheld digital device 500. Then, the system of use for the infant car seat assembly then goes through the sensor initialization. If there is no firmware update over the version installed on the user’s credentialed digital device 500, then the system returns to the continuous cycle to check if an infant is in present in the infant car seat. This continuous monitoring loop cycles every second, FIGS. 24 and 30.
