Abstract
Description
[0001] "MOVEMENT UNIT FOR A REAR-VIEW MIRROR DEVICE"
[0002] FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0003] The present invention relates to a movement unit of an external motorised rearview mirror device for vehicles, in particular motor vehicles, such as passenger cars, buses, trucks, road tractors, road trains, semi-trailer trucks, articulated lorries, motorhomes.
[0004] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0005] It is known that any vehicle on the road must be equipped, outside the passenger compartment, with one, or favourably two, adjustable so-called rear-view mirrors disposed one on the side of the driver and the other on the side of the passenger in such a way as to allow the driver adequate visibility.
[0006] Normally, a motorized external rear-view mirror device comprises a cap, having an appearance conforming to the type and brand of the vehicle, open at the front and provided with a support plate, a movement unit attached to the support plate, and a mirror attached to the movement unit at the front opening of the cap. The movement unit allows the mirror to be oriented with respect to a central reference plane or axis of the movement unit in order to define the optimal inclination for each driver.
[0007] An example of a known movement unit comprises a first inner hemispherical element integral with the vehicle, partially surmounted by a second outer hemispherical element disposed to support a mirror. The first and second elements are each designed with contact areas forming segments of a spherical surface. For the oscillation of the external element that carries the mirror, with respect to the internal element that is attached to the vehicle, two motors are provided that, by means of a reducer, each drive a sprocket, protruding through a recess of the internal element, which meshes with a corresponding curved rack made on the inner surface of the external element.
[0008] A drawback of such a movement unit is that it comprises a large number of components.
[0009] A further drawback of this movement unit is that the components are complex and expensive to make both because of their shape and because it is necessary to adhere to very close tolerances to ensure optimal coupling between the two hemispherical elements.
[0010] A further drawback of such a movement unit is that the transmission of the curved sprocket-rack motion requires the application of lubricating greases to promote a smooth movement without jerks. For this reason, the inside of the movement unit is subject to soiling and accumulation of dust and dirt that, in the long run, deteriorates operating performance.
[0011] There is therefore the need to perfect a movement unit for a rear-view mirror device that can overcome at least one of the disadvantages of the prior art.
[0012] One purpose of the present invention, which corresponds to the technical problem that needs to be solved, is to simplify the movement of the mirror of a rear-view mirror device by optimizing the components that form the movement unit to obtain a low-cost product, but of high functional quality in terms of performance, durability, speed and precision of the orientation movement.
[0013] One purpose of the present invention is to make a movement unit for a rear-view mirror device having a limited number of components and of simple shape.
[0014] Another purpose of the present invention is to provide a movement unit for a rear-view mirror device that is readily industrially producible with reduced investment costs for moulds and related equipment.
[0015] Another purpose of the present invention is to provide a rear-view mirror device provided with such a mirror movement unit.
[0016] The Applicant has devised, tested and embodied the present invention to overcome the shortcomings of the state of the art and to obtain these and other purposes and advantages.
[0017] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention is set forth and characterized in the independent claims. The dependent claims describe other characteristics of the present invention or variants to the main inventive idea.
[0018] In accordance with the above purposes, and to resolve the technical problem disclosed above in a new and original way, also achieving considerable advantages compared to the state of the prior art, a movement unit according to the present invention for a rear-view mirror device suitable for being installed on a vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle, such as for example a passenger car, a bus, a truck, a road tractor, a lorry, a semi-trailer truck, an articulated lorry, a motorhome and the like, comprises:
[0019] - a positioning member provided with a plate supported centrally by a rod having a first end,
[0020] - movement means facing said plate comprising two sliding elements lying on two distinct lying planes parallel and sliding along respective orthogonal axes of translation, said sliding elements being provided with respective slots made through and partly overlapping, through which said first end of said rod is inserted, and
[0021] - a fulcrum element, a movement of said sliding elements along said axes of translation determining a dragging of said first end along said slots and causing a corresponding inclination of said rod with respect to said fulcrum element in such a way as to selectively orient said plate angularly with respect to a central axis of reference by a given angle of inclination.
[0022] In doing so, at least one movement unit is obtained, formed by a small number of components and in which the movement of the plate, on which the mirror is applied in use, can be obtained in a particularly simple, safe, precise way.
[0023] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, said axes of translation and said central axis of reference form a trio of orthogonal axes.
[0024] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, said fulcrum element is a fixed component, distinct from said positioning member and is disposed in cooperation with a shaped portion of said rod which can rotate rigidly on it.
[0025] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, said slots have an elongated linear profile with a specific slot length, defining a corresponding maximum travel of said sliding elements, and a specific slot width, corresponding to a transverse size of said first end.
[0026] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, said first end may have a widened shape to determine an interlocking coupling in said slots preventing an axial movement of said rod. The only movements allowed are those of translation along the slots as a result of the movements of the sliding elements.
[0027] In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, said movement means comprise two distinct electric motors operatively connected to said sliding elements to determine a desired movement along said axes of translation. In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, said motors are installed on a common support plane that can be disposed between said plate and said lying planes of said sliding elements.
[0028] In accordance with other embodiments of the present invention, said motors are installed on a common support plane and said lying planes of said sliding elements can be disposed between said plate and said support plane.
[0029] In accordance with embodiments of the present invention, said slots extend along a direction orthogonal to the axis of translation of the respective sliding element. In accordance with other embodiments of the present invention, said slots extend along a direction parallel to the axis of translation of the respective sliding element.
[0030] Embodiments of the present invention also refer to a rear-view mirror device comprising a cap open at the front and provided inside with a support plate, a movement unit according to the present invention attached to said support plate, and a mirror mounted on said plate.

DESCRIPTION OF SOME EMBODIMENTS OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
[0041] With reference to Fig. 1, a rear-view mirror device 100 is exemplarily shown comprising a cap 110 open at the front and provided inside with a support plate 111, a movement unit 10 attached to the support plate 111, and a mirror 112 mounted on a movable part of the movement unit 10 at the front opening of the cap 110. The rear-view mirror device 100 may also comprise, in a manner known per se, an arm 113 for attaching the cap 110 to the frame of a vehicle such as a motor vehicle, in particular a motor vehicle such as for example a passenger car, a bus, a truck, a tractor, a lorry, a semi-trailer truck, an articulated lorry, a motorhome and the like.
[0042] Figures 2 and 3 illustrate two embodiments of the movement unit 10 comprising a base 11 that can be attached to the support plate 111, movement means 12 associated with the base 11, and a positioning member 13 associated with the movement means 12 and orientable around a fulcrum element 14.
[0043] The positioning member 13 is provided with a plate 15 to which the mirror 112 of the rear-view mirror device 100 can be connected.
[0044] The plate 15 is supported centrally by a rod 16 which is part of the positioning member 13. Said rod 16 is rigidly associated with the plate 15.
[0045] The movement means 12 face the plate 15 and comprise two distinct sliding elements 18, 19 lying on two distinct parallel lying planes Pl, P2, identified in figs. 4 and 6.
[0046] The sliding elements 18, 19 are preferably disposed in contact, or at least in very close contact, with each other, as can be seen for example in figs. 4 and 6.
[0047] The sliding elements 18, 19 are slidable along two axes of translation X, Y orthogonal and not intersecting each other. The axes of translation X, Y are parallel to the lying planes Pl, P2 of the sliding elements 18, 19. Said sliding elements 18, 19 are therefore disposed, and can move without interference, according to a "cross" configuration, figs. 5 and 7.
[0048] Each sliding element 18, 19 is provided with a through slot 20, 21 having an elongated linear profile. The slots 20, 21 pass through the body of the sliding elements 18, 19 along a direction orthogonal to the lying planes Pl, P2, figs. 4 and 6.
[0049] The slots 20, 21 preferably extend along a direction orthogonal to the axis of translation X, Y, figs. 5 and 7.
[0050] According to a possible embodiment variant, the slots 20, 21 can extend along a direction parallel to the axis of translation X, Y.
[0051] The sliding elements 18, 19 are mutually disposed in such a way that the slots 20, 21 are always at least partly overlapping.
[0052] A first end 16a of the rod 16 is inserted through both slots 20, 21, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6. The first end 16a of the rod 16 is opposite to a second end 16b to which the plate 15 is associated.
[0053] The first end 16a is rigidly constrained to the slots 20, 21 being able to slide along them, in the direction of their length, as a result of a movement of the sliding elements 18, 19.
[0054] The slots 20, 21 define an overlapping area that allows, depending on the mutual positioning of the sliding elements 18, 19, the first end 16a of the rod 16 to be positioned and therefore to incline the plate 15 that is in an opposite position. The set of points, i.e. the trajectory, which can occupy the first end 16a of the rod 16 is comprised within a square, as can be seen in the schematic representations of Figs. 8, 8a-8d. Each of said points, which corresponds to an inclination of the plate 15, can be reached by moving the individual sliding elements 18, 19 by a certain amount along the axes of translation X, Y.
[0055] The movement unit 10 therefore provides that a movement of the sliding elements 18, 19 along the axes of translation X, Y determines a dragging of the first end 16a along the slots 20, 21 according to a desired flat trajectory and causes a corresponding inclination of the rod 16 with respect to the fulcrum element 14 in such a way as to selectively orient the plate 15 angularly with respect to a central axis of reference Z orthogonal to the axes of translation X, Y. The orientation of the plate 15 determines, in use, an orientation of the mirror 1 10 as imparted, for example by remote controls, by the driver of the vehicle.
[0056] According to some embodiments, the axes of translation X, Y and the central axis of reference Z form a trio of orthogonal axes (X, Y, Z), see for example Figs. 2 and 3.
[0057] According to some embodiments, the slots 20, 21 have a specific slot length L which defines a corresponding maximum travel of the sliding elements 18, 19, and a specific slot width W, corresponding to a transverse size of the first end 16a of the rod 16.
[0058] According to some embodiments, the plate 15 can be oriented at 360° about the central axis of reference Z according to an angle of inclination occomprised between about 0° and about 18°, for example preferably up to about 16°. The angle of inclination essentially ocdepends on the maximum travel of the sliding elements 18, 19 and therefore on the slot length L of the slots 20, 21 and on the position of the fulcrum element 14, in particular on the distance between the fulcrum element 14 and the point of application of the movement to the rod 16 i.e. the first end 16a.
[0059] According to some embodiments, the plate 15 may preferably be inclined up to an angle of inclination ocwith respect to the central axis of reference Z equal to about 16°.
[0060] With particular reference to Figs. 8, 8a-8d, possible exemplary positionings of the plate 15 are illustrated together with the corresponding positions of the sliding elements 18, 19 and of the first end 16a of the rod 16.
[0061] According to some embodiments, the sliding elements 18, 19 may be plateshaped elements.
[0062] The sliding elements 18, 19 are fixed movably to the base 11 along guides 22, 23 which extend on the lying planes Pl, P2 along the respective axes of translation X, Y. The guides 22, 23 completely contain the sliding elements 18, 19 in such a way that they do not interfere with each other during movement.
[0063] According to embodiments, the guides 22, 23 extend along two diametrically orthogonal directions of the base 11.
[0064] According to some embodiments, each sliding element 18, 19 has a prevalent development along its axis of translation X, Y with a plate length LI, a plate width W 1 measured transversely to the axis of translation X, Y, and a plate thickness SI, figs. 4-7. The sliding elements 18, 19 have two opposite faces of greater extension 18a, 19a parallel to the lying planes Pl, P2 and through which the slots 20, 21 are made that pass through the plate thickness SI of the sliding elements 18, 19.
[0065] The sliding elements 18, 19 also have two opposite elongated side faces 18b, 19b, and two opposite head faces of smaller extension 18c, 19c.
[0066] Said faces 18a- 18c, 19a- 19c may be essentially flat.
[0067] One of said faces of greater extension 18a, 19a rests on a bottom surface 22a, 23a of the guide 22, 23 while said lateral faces 18b, 19b cooperate, with limited play, with two opposite lateral sides 22b, 23b of the guide 22, 23. According to embodiments, the guides 22, 23 can be obtained directly on the base 11 as flat grooves in which the sliding elements 18, 19 are slidable.
[0068] According to one embodiment variant, the guides 22, 23 can be distinct components attached to the base 11 in a substantially known manner.
[0069] According to embodiments, the edges of the slots 20, 21 may advantageously be rounded to avoid excessive stresses on the first end 16a of the rod 16 when it is being dragged.
[0070] According to one variant, the first end 16a is rigidly constrained to the slots 20, 21 with an interlocking coupling. It is thus possible to block an axial movement of the rod 16 and allow only translational movements of the first end 16a along the slots 20, 21.
[0071] According to embodiments, the first end 16a has a widened shape that allows the interlocking coupling to be defined.
[0072] According to embodiments, the first end 16a may be formed by two elastically deformable flaps, figs. 4 and 6. In this way, the first end 16a can be easily inserted through the slots 20, 21, in an assembly phase of the movement unit 10, and subsequently remain in position thanks to the widened shape that prevents accidental dislodgement thereof.
[0073] According to embodiments, the first end 16a can be associated with an abutment element 33, for example a ring, a washer, a disc, which can abut against the largest extension face 18a, 19a of the slot 20, 21 facing the tip of the first end 16a of the rod 16 to make the axial locking of the rod 16 itself more stable, fig. 4.
[0074] According to embodiments, the fulcrum element 14 is fixed and is a separate and distinct component from the rod 16. According to embodiments, the fulcrum element 14 can be made directly in a single body with the base 11, figs. 2 and 4.
[0075] According to further embodiments, the fulcrum element 14 may be a distinct component attached to the base 11, figs. 3 and 6. The fulcrum element 14 is positioned between the first end 16a and the second end 16b of the rod 16 determining a rotation point for the latter. The term "rotation point" means an annular area on which the rod 16 can push to rotate rigidly so as to tilt the plate 15 of the aforementioned angle of inclination a.
[0076] The fulcrum element 14 also acts as a sealing point for the rod 16 and aids in the anti-rotational effect.
[0077] The rod 16 can be provided with a shaped portion 17, disposed between the first and second ends 16a, 16b, shaped to cooperate with an annular opening 14a of the fulcrum element 14.
[0078] According to further embodiments, the shaped portion 17 may comprise a bulge or bulb 17b, fig. 4.
[0079] According to one variant, the shaped portion 17 may comprise a section narrowing between the rod part 16 facing the second end 16b and the part facing the first end 16a, fig. 6.
[0080] Still with reference to fig. 6, the fulcrum element 14 may for example be defined by an hourglass-shaped component in which the part facing the plate 15 may be absent or may be provided with through holes to prevent the accumulation of dust or other sediments.
[0081] According to embodiments, the base 11 has a discoidal shape with an essentially circular section. This essentially circular shape allows the movement unit 10 to be installed in most of the rear-view mirror devices 100 currently on the market. A person of ordinary skill in the art will understand that any variation to the shape of the base 11 can be envisaged to apply the movement unit 10 to any rear-view mirror device 100 that is commercially available or that will be developed in the future.
[0082] According to embodiments, the base 11 can comprise a first shell 11a and an opposite second shell l ib coupled together to define a positioning compartment 24 for the movement means 12. The second shell l ib, which is the one directly facing the plate 15, centrally has an opening 25 through which the rod 16 passes.
[0083] According to embodiments, the plate 15 may have an essentially discoidal shape. The plate 15 has a first essentially flat surface 15a to which the mirror 112 can be connected and an opposite second surface 15b from which the rod 16 extends centrally. The first and second surfaces 15a, 15b may be substantially flat.
[0084] According to possible embodiments, the first surface 15a may be slightly concave or convex.
[0085] According to embodiments, the first surface 15a may be provided with hooking elements for the mirror 112. The first surface 15a can also be provided with antivibration elements that allow the mirror 112 to be stabilized, with the vehicle in motion, in such a way as to always provide a clear image to the driver. According to embodiments, the rod 16 is preferably integrally formed, i.e. in a single body, with the plate 15.
[0086] According to one embodiment variant, the rod 16 and the plate 15 can be two distinct components, mechanically associated with each other in a substantially known manner. According to embodiments, the rod 16 has a preferably cylindrical shape. The cross-section of the rod 16 may be constant or may vary along the axis of the rod 16 continuously or locally, with thickening or thinning.
[0087] According to embodiments, the rod 16 may be formed of two parts 16', 16". A first part 16' has the first end 16a and is provided with an opposite spherical seat 26. A second part 16" has the second end 16b and is provided with an opposite conjugate spherical head 27 articulated in said spherical seat 26, Fig. 4. In this case, said first part 16' moves rigidly as a result of the movement of the sliding elements
[0088] 18, 19 that drag the first end 16a with the slots 20, 21, and the spherical coupling between the spherical seat 26 and the spherical head 27 allows the second part 16" of the rod to rotate rigidly against the fulcrum element 14.
[0089] According to further embodiments, the rod 16 may be formed from a single component, Fig. 6. In this case, a dragging of the first end 16a corresponds to rigid rotation of the entire rod 16 against the fulcrum element 14.
[0090] According to the present invention, the movement means 12 also comprise at least one motor configured to determine the movement of the sliding elements 18,
[0091] 19.
[0092] According to possible embodiments, the movement means 12 may comprise a single two-shaft motor capable of independently moving the sliding elements 18, 19.
[0093] According to illustrated embodiments, the movement means 12 comprise two distinct motors 28, 29 operatively connected to the sliding elements 18, 19 to determine a desired movement along the axes of translation X, Y. According to embodiments, the motors 28, 29 are mounted in special seats provided on the base 11. Alternatively, or in addition to the seats, intermediate elements 30 can be provided, for example brackets, attached to the seats and supporting the motors 28, 29, fig. 5.
[0094] According to embodiments, the motors 28, 29 are mounted in special seats made on the second shell 11b of the base 11.
[0095] According to further embodiments, the motors 28, 29 are mounted in special seats made on the first shell 1 la of the base 11.
[0096] According to embodiments, the motors 28, 29 provide motion along respective output axes which may be orthogonal to each other. The movement means 12 comprise transmission and conversion members 31 associated with the motors 28, 29 and the sliding elements 18, 19. The mutual orientation of the output axes of the motors 28, 29 may depend on the type of motion transmission and conversion members 31 interposed between the motors 28, 29 and the sliding elements 18, 19. According to possible embodiments, said motion transmission and conversion members 31 comprise a worm screw 31a in output to the motor 28, 29 and a threaded screw 31b attached, or made directly, on a support arm 32 connected to each sliding member 18, 19, Fig. 5.
[0097] According to further possible embodiments, said motion transmission and conversion members 31 comprise a sprocket 31c associated with the motor 28, 29, a rack 3 Id associated with each sliding member 18, 19 parallel to the axes of translation X, Y, and any intermediate toothed wheels 31e meshed with each other to transmit the motion from the sprocket 3 la to the rack 31b, fig. 7.
[0098] According to other embodiments, the motion transmission and conversion members 31 may be integrated into the motors 28, 29.
[0099] According to embodiments, the motors 28, 29 are installed on a common support plane P3 disposed between the plate 15 and the lying planes Pl, P2 of the sliding elements 18, 19, fig. 4. According to further embodiments, the lying planes Pl, P2 of the sliding elements 18, 19 can be disposed between the plate 15 and the support plane P3 of the motors 28, 29, fig. 6. This configuration advantageously allows the mechanical part to be separated from the electrical part. According to embodiments, the single motor or motors 28, 29 are electrically powered and their power supply can be provided via wirings 114 (fig. 1) from the battery itself of the vehicle on which the rear-view mirror device 100 is mounted. The command of the single motor or motors 28, 29 may be imparted via buttons present within the vehicle cockpit via a wired or wireless connection. The buttons can be both physical and virtual, for example projected on a touch screen.
[0100] According to possible applications of the present invention, the control of the single motor or motors 28, 29 can be automated by the same control unit of the vehicle following the adjustment of the position of the seat, the steering wheel and the height of the driver or even by further parameters previously entered into the system also concerning the shape of the vehicle and its dimensions.
[0101] According to possible embodiments, the at least one motor can be an electric micromotor.
[0102] It is clear that modifications and / or additions of parts may be made to the movement unit 10 for a rear-view mirror device 100 as described heretofore, without departing from the field and scope of the present invention, as defined by the claims.
[0103] It is also clear that, although the present invention has been described with reference to some specific examples, a person of skill in the art shall certainly be able to achieve other equivalent forms of a movement unit for a rear-view mirror device, having the characteristics as set forth in the claims and hence all coming within the scope of protection defined thereby.
[0104] In the following claims, the sole purpose of the references in brackets is to facilitate their reading and they must not be considered as restrictive factors with regard to the field of protection defined by the claims.
