AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In radio access networks, achieving optimal signal performance through MIMO systems is hindered by the relative phase differences between transmission and reception pathways, which can vary due to different signal pathways and physical components.

Method used

The apparatus and method involve switching between different signal states to optimize the relative phase between signals in transmission and reception pathways, using amplitude detection and phase adjustment mechanisms to maximize combined amplitude and maintain optimized phase settings.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables dynamic real-life phase control, ensuring accurate uplink performance by aligning relative phases between transmission and reception pathways, thereby enhancing signal capacity, coverage, and latency.

Abstract

According to various, but not necessarily all, examples there is provided an apparatus comprising: a first antenna port; a second antenna port; a first transmission pathway for a first antenna port; a second transmission pathway for a second antenna port; a first reception pathway for the first antenna port; a second reception pathway for the second antenna port; a first additional pathway for the first antenna port; a second additional pathway for the second antenna port; means for switching between a first state in which a first signal is conveyed from the first reception pathway along the first additional pathway and a second signal is conveyed from the second reception pathway along the second additional pathway and a second state in which a third signal is conveyed from the first transmission pathway along the first additional pathway and a fourth signal is conveyed from the second transmission pathway along the second additional pathway; an amplitude detector configured to detect a combined amplitude of a signal in the first additional pathway and a signal in the second additional pathway; means for adjusting a relative phase between a signal in the first additional pathway and a signal in the second additional pathway based at least in part on the detected combined amplitude; and means for adjusting a relative phase between a signal in the first transmission pathway and a signal in the second transmission pathway based at least in part on the detected combined amplitude.
