Abstract
Process for recycling steel swarf to produce an iron chloride solution, the process comprising: in a leaching step, dissolving steel swarf sludge in a hydrochloric acid solution, wherein the pH of the mixture of steel swarf sludge and hydrochloric acid is less than about 3, thereby forming an aqueous iron chloride slurry, and in a precipitation step, increasing the pH of the iron chloride solution to a pH value of about 3.5 to about 4.5, to precipitate non-iron steel alloying metals in the aqueous iron chloride solution.
